A mythical demo for the PC, and I think this is my favourite demo!! Great music, great code, great design...
added on the 2000-08-30 20:36:58 by epsilum
I'd almost call it the godfather of all demo's, revolutionary for its time.
the code is TERRIBLE, the music KICK ASS !
see the date => 1993 !!
yes, it's true, that boys are GODS ! :)

classic of pc scene.
It's the best ever made demo in the world!!!
Was revolutionary, the first real PC megademo, BUT if you think this is the best demo ever then you haven't turned on your pc in years. Toss out your 486 and 300 baud modem and live, damnit.
Not the first PC megademo, but arguably the most popular. The music made me feel very, very small back in 1993 =)
nothing special... *big grin*
mouhahaha ....
Atari rules.
Atari rules.
hm.. the living(?) legend
This demo really kick ass!!!
One of the best ever made demo (i think).
One of the best ever made demo (i think).
I am wondering one thing. When will I see the Second Reality for the modern computers? I don't think I have seen it! I still see the Second Reality and it really glues me to the monitor as no demo out there!!!
Imagine how the old Second Reality would look with the new technology! I am still waiting for the new SR on the PCs...
I am still trying to analyze the facts that makes me so obsessed to watch this demo again and again..

THE classic demo that any scener MUST have on his HD and watch it at least once a week :)
the demo wich have transformed Amiga sceners in PC sceners, start for 5 years of (bad) design on pc
first demo i have $een. with a competing demos, this one seemed as the most compact, complex and united. also the music by purple motion(17) and skaven touched me a lot. respect.
i think that this demo rocks... if you haven't seen it yet, you're NOT a SCENER!!!!
yeah classic ofcourse but then i rather say atari rulez than consider these boys to be gods... music is cool, but just as demomusic from the old times. and the demo itself? nice to watch and keep into your collection, otherwise... err no!!
Yep, gotta give a 'rulez'. Most impressive about it is definately the design. The effects aren't really the best of that year (see Crystal Dream 2/Triton and Untitled/Dust), although way above the norm. It's great, and I don't think it will ever be forgotten by the (us) oldschoolers.
precious, unforgetable, first demo for PC I saw back in 1993, sometimes I still feel my jaw at floor, when I think about it ... Have a life, ignore all new bullshit.
i probably saw this one too late (in 96 i think), i can't really find anything in it which let's me say "wow, a real classic". i don't like pm/skaven music, maybe that's the reason. and also, it isn't the best pc demo ever.
The first pc demo I saw (in 1995). And it still fuckin' rules, no matter what the kids sayin' =). Is there any chance for a win32-port?
One of the demos that shocked the masses!! When it was released in Assembly 93 it was the topic of the discussions. Very good one, considering the time it was released. I believe it's a must see.
I should vote for this one too!!!
excellent piece of work, for many sceners the reason they became a scener.
the music in the endpart gives me chills everytime...

I have to support this one.. I know I lived in an area where there were practically no Amigas around, so I'd only been following pc stuff.. but this one definitely stood out far above all others. For visual/audio synchronisation and with what was obviously a major effort to put this thing together in style, it's still rare to find something this nice.
i love the soundtracks :)
however.. i wonder what wouldve happent if the c-64 remix where shown at the same compo.. would this demo get so big then? ;)

Well... mandatory I think :)
"el 1er mandamiento"
The code was IMHO very average, I saw better stuff in 93...
But I really do like the music, and the design was quite nice.
But I really do like the music, and the design was quite nice.
Hearing how people still appreciate SR as the best demo ever has made me hate it. It was good on its own time, but it's no reason to still worship it. i also hate the music.
Even though it's become cool and trendy to hate it I still like it. Not enough to ever actually watch it again, but it was great for the first 10 times. :)
By no means the best demo ever (anymore).. more like the minimum standard for a good demo. After all, this is THE demo that has nearly become some sort of symbol of the demoscene, you can't put that aside even if you hate it.

ho-hum, I always liked Crystal Dreams 2's music better anyway.
It may be nothing exceptional now, it may be more than 8 years old, it may also not beat the amiga demos of its time, but this is the megademo that made me (and most pc old-timers) a scener. With the help of Unreal of course. So respect (and a rulez vote) is absolutely mandatory. And the music... OMG the music! Make no mistake ppl, this demo almost singlehandedly started the pc scene.
considering this the "best demo ever" is ofcourse not true.
but it WAS a groundbreaking demo both in effects and design, (btw: i love it's music even nowadays :) AND look at it's continuity and sync. no pc demo was able to mess with SR (amiga demos were ;), and it defeated it's position for years and for reason. and do not forget the pc scene boom right ater asm93.
it _was_ the best one, it _is_ a milestone.

This is demo that made a scener. (and the FC_Info10.txt :)
love the soundtrack too...
can we get a Windows Port Please FC?

This is _the_ demo for people of the good-old DOS days. Hell, remember Final Reality, the PC benchmark (for a while)? Take a look at this demo and then watch final reality. They did a few scenes as a sort-of tribute to this demo I think.
for the sake of the old days.. after all, I'm a scener now because of this thing..
Ok, this was defnitely something for the PC scene in 1993, but the Amy scene was ages ahead at the time. Look wisely, and you'll notice a lot of "inspiration" from DesertDreams and Dane.
overrated
Just saw it yesterday for a 1000000th time or something, and felt the urge to vote it again.
lai > overrated? at least you could say why....
rai: In my opinion this prod is actually UNDERrated, as many other mythical productions from both the Amiga and PC scenes (Unreal, Dope, 9fingers, Desert Dream, State of the art etc). We should not stick to the past and forget the future, but the past is what brought us here in the first place.
ooooohhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmgggg!!!!
2nd reality was probably the 1st demo i saw on the pc and I still like it. The music in the end is especially very nice.
for old times' sake
Oh what the hell.
Yeah, there were better Amiga demos at the time, so what. This demo gave the PC scene a swift kick, and is probably responsible for recruiting hundreds into the scene. If it weren't for 2nd Reality, we might still be doing vectorballs and scrollers on the PC today... ok, maybe not. :) As cheesy and cliche as it may seem today, it's hard to find a modern demo with as much passion put into it as this one.

A major milestone in the PC demoscene. The only demo i've seen normal people watch (excluding sceners girlfriends and mothers) in it's time.
Awesome music, awesome sync. Absolutely impressive for its time.
Big respect FC

i used go back from school at lunch just to watch this one. a masterpiece, the pc old-school at its climax. if there would be only one classic demo to remember it would probably be this one...
piece of turd. awful 93demoszchenetechno by purple motion, average stuff from skaven, awful colors from every coder, typical crap from pixel (jesus that orc standing on the rock).
yeah, this ruled back in 93-95, but now it's very outdated/overhyped. yes, the most important demo in pc-scene, but still a big piece of turd. check out the sword!:)

one of the best demos i've ever seen. one of the reasons i'm a scener =) oh and hempest, both of the tunes are really nices :)
The first demo I saw...
And I think not just for me, I mean this demo may not be the best (as I think CD2 is better code-wise), but this demo inspired many-many sceners.
Definite thumbs up!

it rulez!
really nice even
just because this demo was considered good at the time, it doesn't mean i can't say the amiga demos back then wiped the floor with this junk.
and btw, purple motion never had any style whatsoever in his music. together with lizardking he's struggling for the 1st place in the Most Overrated Musicians chart.

Everything is done damn well here.
BOWS!!!!! Music rockssss !
BOWS!!!!! Music rockssss !
Funny. Thought I'd already voted for this one.
So beautiful. I don't care whether there was better amiga-demos around, I don't care if it's 8 years old and I especially don't care for people not liking this demo. This is a true classic. Go to any party with sceners on, play the purple motion-part of the soundtrack on the speakersystem, and watch as sceners get big grins on their faces after hearing teh first five notes, and realizing what's on :)
and yeah, I got my mother to drive me and my computer to a friend who had a surround system, just so I could enjoy the demo in full effect :) (I haven't seen any amidemos with dolby surround btw, so stfu ;)

ibm pc's version of kefrens' desert dream
It WAS really cool, but not even my favorite back then. I think it's too much overrated in this time, and Coat, I really don't want a Windows version of this crap :)
this demo is the main reason why so many pc-groups started to appear in 1993/94. sure; the design is heavily inspired by "desert dream", but one can't really say that they are all that similar. "desert dream" is more like "unreal" was - more bragging and text. "second reality" is more of a journey. i really love it, and i watch it all the time on my oldskool-pc (just for the record, i also watch "desert dream" all the time on my amiga :) and the scene wouldn't have been the same without it. it's a timeless classic and anyone who's involved with the demoscene, both young and old, should have seen it.
ps! the music is legendary.. it really brings back memories for me.. and not just me, i think.. :)
ps! the music is legendary.. it really brings back memories for me.. and not just me, i think.. :)
nice, but not one of my favourites
This isn't the first demo I'd seen. But it definitely blew me away when my friend Lee came back from Germany with all his cool techno and a copy of Second Reality. It kicked some major ass on my teacher's poor 486SX 25 with 4 megs :P And it pumped out the tunes on the teach's stereo. I like... Mr. Bowen was probably used to the Reggae he played durring comp. classes :P
Well, it IS a legend, and it IS awesome for 1993, but when you look at it nowadays its sooooo outdated.
I see lots of people dissing the code :) Keep in mind that the coders had some input into the design of this production. Give them credit for putting together a good production rather than aiming to boost their egos by seeking out advanced routines.. and boosting their egos with a monumental production instead ;)
It was the year 1993. I remember a high school friend of mine handing me a couple of disks with the words "Second Reality" on the label and thinking, "What the heck is this?"
I did not quite know what to make of the title, but when my as the blue landscape scrolled with the opening credits, my AdlibFM accustomed ears experienced the greatest of shocks. A digital string section blasted through my 8-bit Sound Blaster card.
I soon realized that it wasn't a game, but a demonstration of computer graphics, and remember thinking to myself, "Why couldn't my PC games look and sound this good?"
Second Reality is one of the finest pieces of 486 nostalgia I know of. It's appeal is based on its balance between imagery and music, and timing. It is like a journey, it conveys emotion.
There may never be another 2nd Reality for me.
However, that doesn't mean that one of you may not be creating a 2nd Reality for someone else.

aargh, it cant be true, i didnt comment this one? i thought i did all the time ;D
anyway. i agree with ones saying its overrated. its true, its kinda piece of shit even. but it's got a nostalgic value, thats one. then, it is a real oldskool production - music, gfx, code - to the bone! i like both Crystal Dream and Desert Dream better, they got more atmosphere i think, but still this one is associated with old times, i just cant judge it without any emotions... i never really liked it but its part of the past and it is at least a little bit impressive. so.. no thumb down, no thumb up. SR is just around and there is no way to escape it for a true scener =]
Here's a link to a divx version of the demo. The quality's not very high, but if you're running win2k or winxp, this is a lot better than nothing :)

Once we had ATOMIC PLAYBOYS, once we used to laugh about the pcsceners
... this was released around that time :)
... this was released around that time :)
the demo was great and definately unique in the pc-scene back then, yet there were tons of better amigademos that got released at the same time.
Classic.
I'd seen a few demos when this came out. but this is the one that kicked me up the arse, threw me round the room, and made me want to *make* demos. As PC demos go, it's seminal. Technically it just absolutely blew me away. It also features one of the best soundtracks of any demo ever... (and I'm sad enough to admit that I have the cityscene music as my ringtone :) )
/me bows down.
/me bows down.
Hrm, I suppose the new guys don't really appreciate this one, judging from the comments...
But for guys like me, this demo was sort of a pivot point.
We used to make fun of PCs and their scene... And with productions like this and Crystal Dream I/II, we honestly could not do that anymore (even though in CD I Triton put down PCs themselves).
So this demo is so important because it is the first mature, true megademo for PC.
The music is excellent, and the effects are arranged to the music perfectly. It has various moods, going from bombastic, to mellow to rave... It's just the complete demo :)
486, VLB display cards and GUS converted many Amiga/Atari people to PC. This demo and Doom were also important factors in that movement. PC has arrived!
And after all these years, I still love this demo. True quality doesn't fade away.

I want a Second Reality ringtone too!
diamondie : ask uncle-x/mfx, he has ringtones of most major demos on his phone.
a demo that i would prefer to see on a mobile phone than on a pc/party screen.
still it probably was something for the sceners in 93.. but when i saw it when i discovered the scene two years after, it just looked like pure coderdesign..

it's so easy to piss on something done in '93 on sucky hardware. i still like it.
Well, it has something that 99% of demos lack today: A "FEEL" and ambience.
Hmmm,.. ringtones! I have the ringtone from the beginning with the chessboard and the diamonds, but a friend of mine had the other in the part with the leaves and the water. Are there any other demoringtones in the net? I think we should do some! :)
The second reality ringtone was got from a greek scene friend in an image of which keys to press in my(almost mine) mobile phone. All the greek sceners in our close cycle have phones playing this ringtone, how original hehe :)

rulez
fucking yes! my favourite oldskool pc demo.
GET DOWN!
AmigA design rulez, this pc crap no
today's comment :)
I can't believe somebody thumbed this down.. you're so ignorant.
Code a virtual reality demo. That'd probably be about the equivalent to what this demo was in '93. Christ.

pardon me.. code a virtual reality demo with a passion.. then you're getting close.

This must be one of the best demos, if there is a parody (in high quality) like real reality. For me personal it rocks.
awful colors, stupid themes of graphics and
music is horrible. it was 1993 killer pc demo
but hey get a life we have evolved. amiga

the best I know even after years
Nice idea, that is to go to the 9fingers/arte/stateoftheart/desertdream/whatever pages and thumb them down because the only place where amiga is alive these days is on "lame" PC UAE emulators...
Cry babies, cry your hearts out. Don't worry, nobody really cares any more.

The first pc demo I have ever seen and it rocks!!
I was forced to wrap my mind back a couple of years to be able to thumb this up, its not close to the best demo though =) even if it was for a couple of years
We want -> WINDOWS PORT!!!
1993 - it was a good year
i think this is one of the most epoch-making demos on pc ever.
daaamn co0l demo! :)
Remeber i got this demo from a friend back in 94/95 :)
Saw it alot of times, even showed it to my friends and family as i can remember.
GFX is GREAT, music is GREAT, code is GREAT :)
Maybe one of the best demos ever made! no doubt!

Grafics and code can be replaced within years or months, but music isn't that easy replacable, so the second reallity still rocks.
true classic
First PC demo I could show to non-scene people
first pc demo I saw. rocks :)
You may not like SR that much. you're loss dude...
The impact of this demo to the pc-scene has never been topped by any other product and therefore this thing is legendary.
Thumbs Up!

well, what can I say... legendary
Oh dammit Zone, you thumbed down this one ?
I think if you see this demo today it's just a maybe awesome demo. But if you discovered it in 1993... Well, you'd remember all the feeling passing thru your heart experiencing this demo.
Asm93 Amiga demo's where awesome but well, not legendary like this demo...
10 year after, are we going to see today's hardware capabilities clones of this demo ?
It could be so nice...

Overhyped. Watched it around 94-95 and couldnt figure what was the all the buzz about. There is no stlye, and I`v seen better effects on amiga in early 90s. Only the end 3d scene seemed cool.
If this was really the best demo ever, I`d never bother to watch any demos at all :)

this one has "conversion" on c64 wich is much better than the original..
These comments are very funny :)
I like anticontrary demos. Actually, anticontrawhat is not the right word perhaps, but somehow,. this word slipped in my mind for the meaning I thought. It means, demos where the opinion about them are quite opposite,. I mean someone love it, others hate it and people wondered why did it made impact and others beleive it surelly should do! Something like Chimera for example ;)
But hey, it's crazy. The C64 conversion better??? How so?! Actually the C64 conversion could be better than it is ;P
If it wasn't for 2ndreal fame, it would be just another Smash Designs demo ;)

second reality suck ass. and sountrack also.
"better amiga demos on that time" is not a reason to diss this demo... well, this is not _that_ amazing, but very good anyways
roxx, zajebwykurwiste. rozpierdalacz.
Classic. Great soundtrack and some cool visuals.
just voting
... and it's more pleasing than dope/complex :-)
Everybody knows too that the music is a classic too! ;) hehehe
Yes, very good in context.
Did Amiga have (technically) better demos at the time? Many of these effects look like stuff done to death on the Amiga 500. But others resemble things that would not appear until until '94-ish on the AGA platform. (Mmm... Nexus-7.)

hiroyoshi, i suppose you're trying to be sarcastic?
as what comes to this demo - first full length pc demo i saw, and also the one that dragged me into the demoscene. doesn't look that cool nowadays anymore but it surely kicked ass back in '93!

Permission granted, lieutenant. Proceed.
LOL
Another one of the finest PC demos ever. A bit dated, yes, but still pretty well constructed. The music stands on its own, as well. Five Musicians lost a good member when they got rid of Purple Motion...
o7
havent commented this?
either i am stupid, or another database fuckup might jerk on me...
Absolutely classic, a true demo legend...
(i have to add that this was very slow on my 386dx40 with realtek vga :) ...back then...)

For the music.
what someone wrote under fc's "unreal" commentaries... *this* is the definitive demo milestone. 2nd reality really marks that point where the whole demo issue started to get mature, concering code, design & style.
second reality is the essence of the pc demoscene in 1 (or 2, i don't remember :) megabytes.
[altought that picture 'by marvel' at the end is totally ripped as far as i remember :)]

one of the best PC demo ever of course
Second reality is desert dreams on pc, and its a cracker! If I see it again in yet another form, Ill puke!!!!! But its cool of course..
Still my fav PC demo, multipart style rules.
And the music... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. :)
And the music... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. :)
if the prod. nowdays would have only 50% demostyle of 2nd_real -> i would be happy

I just think the music rules.. But BIGTIME..
the rest.. well.. the code wasn't really extraordary these days.. this was after CD2.. wasn't it..?

I think the code was cool enough. Not as advanced or interesting as CD2 perhaps, but there are a hell of a lot of effects and some very original combinations of them.
i just feel that this prod is kinda underrated nowadays ...
q: Some would say "overrated" :)
But I think it deserves it's place..

Optimus: I also like C64 conversion better. Well, it's more "incredible" and the music also sounds better. Like, it's too unfair to compare them! But hey! *This* was the first demo i watched, it was delivered with my Ultrasound and made me a demoscener!
Lylh: you are too well informed for a guy with "counterstrike" in his domain name. :> Go ahead and compare release dates!!!
Lylh: you are too well informed for a guy with "counterstrike" in his domain name. :> Go ahead and compare release dates!!!
C64 is better in coding just because it's C64, but as you already said it, it's unfair to compare. But personally I still prefer the PC original than the C64 conversion, because the second is ugly and I have enjoyed some C64 demos much more. I even prefer some other Smash Designs demos (Triage 3, Our Darkness) more than this. It's just that this C64 demo is more famous than anything else to non-C64 sceners. I also prefer the PC music because it simply sounds better, even if the SID is not that bad at all :)
I think as darkness pointed out back in the days, that this thing mainly is cool because of the music.
The code is pretty okay too, some of the stuff trug did was really neat and still is. The design is pretty simple, but nicely done.
There is so much to say about this thing. But I think most of it has been said already...

back then we thought this stuff was made in c (while cool ppl still coded asm!) ... well ... omg
If u dont like to come back.. u still suck !!!

Ho-hum.
Long overdue (the thumb I mean)
The Music
FooLmam: it's still a bit slow on my 386dx40 with realtek vga =)
They could have optimized it a bit more...
They could have optimized it a bit more...
The first demo I ever saw. (if one doesn't count thouse countless cracktros i've seen before i even had heard the word demo)
Me and Proteque loves this demo.
I have to thumb up this one sometimes.
I have not watched this in years, Forgot it was this beautiful mainly the musik.
Ok, added the video URL which was mentioned in the comments. Be aware of the low quality. You cannot "Ah, finally, after 10 years I can watch this demo again!" but "Hey look, I can watch 2nd realtiy while coding some stuff."
runs nicely with DOSbox btw
"the first demo I saw" for me too
I can't belive I haven't voted on this one, this still stands as a milestone in pc demos, and is still mighty enjoyable.
The Legend.
like robotriot, coup de gueule :|
OMG! WTF!! THEY MADE THIS IN 1992 WITHF FLASH?!!?! OMG ROTFL!!
what can i say... i still get very emotional every time i see this prod in a the big screen.
Somehow Unreal kicked more, but...wonderful
dominei: bullshit, unreal was bleh.. unreal2 roxxor :)
Whether you like it or not, this demo is another one of those few demos that you HAVE to have seen if you consider yourself a scener. I like it. I Love the music.
!
agreed :)
:O~
of course:
:-)
By far not the best demo ever. Yet I like this one the most!
For many of us, this was THE DEMO :)
I'm 11 years late but ... =)
No coup de coeur? :X
Cerror: 2nd reality is that popular it doesn't need a coup de coeur. They are meant for good/interesting/whatevercool prods which aren't that widly known.
this was the point when i felt that the pc scene finally 'got somewhere' and i did not feel that bad every day about selling my beloved a1000 to get an pc.
This was certainly awesome at its time, but I prefer being now.
ione of my first seen demos =)
one of my first seen demos =)
Not the very first demo I saw, but the first that really impressed me. Perfect.
i saw this demo very late, but i am still impressed because i didn't know that there was something like this in '93
i saw this really late too, but although i've heard the music before and have heard much about the demo itself before, i just had to go "omg!" at some parts :)
my first PC-soundcard experience.
The legend.. the myth.. THE DEMO! Really that demo shocked a lot of ppl when it was released.. Unbeaten for a long time
unbeaten up to the present day
I honestly think its actually pretty boring, even for its time. So sue me ;-)
I remember I was only 12 when I first saw that for a pure coincidence at a fair in my city (Piacenza).
It was in fact my first (unconscious) contact with the demoscene! I remembered the city scene.
It was in fact my first (unconscious) contact with the demoscene! I remembered the city scene.
First step of modern demoscene :)
Very, very cool. I just watched this on my P2-300 DOS box and I was wowed. The 3D city scene, while dated-looking now, actually looks better than some other similar scenes from the time and the 2D parts hold up well against just about anything coming out today.
You need to understand the time this came from. There was absolutely nothing even measurably close to the quality, especially music. To say it sucks is just your ignorance of the era. This is by far the best demo of the time, unbeatable. This demo was the best of the best, period. Any comment otherwise shows sheer ignorance.
Speaking of ignorance.. Anyone claiming there was "nothing even measurably close" to this demo obviously hasn't seen many demos on other platforms during the same era.. It may have been something amazing for PC kids of the time, but for the rest.. Sorry, no.
I'm not saying it's a bad demo either, but "jotain rajaa".
I'm not saying it's a bad demo either, but "jotain rajaa".
of course this is kinda a milestone, but for me the true pc classic is verses from one year later.
in 93, when i was just learning to know demoscene, i did think that second reality was something awesome. later in my life i've learned and now i know that this demo is seriously nothing compared to the greatness they did put out on other platforms.
dip, no, the true pc classic is x14!

I trust Ominous is only refering to the PC scene. Yes, for a PC demo it was a masterpiece and a milestone at that time, but it was definitely not the only one, especially considering what had already been released on other platforms at that time (or even just considering Crystal Dream 2/Triton).
Ominous: I also trust you are aware that there were many other masterpieces on other platforms back then, that could easily compete with this one, both technically and artistically.
1993... WOW
This was a kind of informative advertising concerning PC demos.
This was a kind of informative advertising concerning PC demos.
FIRST demo coming up with DOLBY SURROUND. that was the hype. cinema style. that's what we waited for in former days. nearly every FC prod was mindblowing, in style & music. but also a big YEAH for Marvel and Pixel... Love you all!
it was good for its platform yes. but compared to other platforms at the same time?
just shut the fuck up and give it the thumb it deserves
thumbs up for nostalgic reasons, together with panic my first demoscene experience.
In 1993, with this demo the Crew really shown to us the Future.
't was my first real demo - GREAT. Especially the soundtrack is still challenging in my opinion. Thumbs up!
UGLY
total cult...remember it as the first PC demo worth to watch ;)
Well, the music's good... Ok effects, got nothing on Crystal Dreams 2 though. Some really mediocre pictures drag this down.
Thumb mainly for the music.
It runs on 5000 cycles. That's incredible.
yup
Not bad but vastly overhyped. Thumbing down for balance.
My favourite demo of all time. No 256 glops, so no cdc yet.
'Thumbing down for balance' : Thanks for restoring the balance - this is more idiotic even than saying 'this doesn't run on my machine, so thumb down'.

see comment above :)
What can I say... I didn't get to see this prod until somewhere around '97 but still was pretty much blown away by it. Some of the effects still look good to me even without considering the age and the musical score has received countless listening hours from me.
I wouldn't be here if Second Reality wasn't be there.
It exercised an immeasurable influence on me.
Let me put my thumb up belatedly, with reverence.

Damn... FC did it again with this one eh? and no i aint canadian.
This must have been revolutionary back in the day. It's still great...
Still my favourite.

Literally brings tears to my eyes everytime I see it.

this proved the pc could keep up with amiga, basically. but it's not better than offerings on other platforms at the time. it's worth a thump up, but not a mega thumb or anything..
shit, i didn't mean a piggy.. ah hell..
damnit!
really cool demo in 1993.
great 3d engine and cool classic effect.
and great music.

Yeah all right all right already. Here it comes
cant believe i havent thumbed this one up yet >_>.. oh well, here goes..
There is a story behind this demo which I'd really like to share!
One day a friend gave me loads of disks with games on it and included was this demo. This was the first demo I ever saw and I instantly fell in love with the music. So much that I spent months trying to find out how to make PC music, eventually I discovered trackers and the scene and started writing my own stuff in scream tracker and ultimately IT.
After 3 years of tracking myself and some friends got together with a local drum'n'bass DJ and MC and hired a venue and held our very first rave called "beyond Vinyl", we hooked up a PC with impulse tracker and played some of my drum'n'bass tunes alongside the DJ, we also had live visuals on a screen. This wasn't a demo party, it was a real drum'n'bass rave for the general public. The diference being that we displayed visuals from our favourite demos on a large screen.
A lot of the punters commented on the visuals and were intruiged. The projection screen we had was huge plus we had very good disco lighting to compliment it. Although they didn't understand the concept of the demo scene they thought it was the coolest thing ever and our rave became quite popular, at its peak we had over 600 ravers attending.
I owe my life to this demo because if I hadn't had seen it I would have never got into tracking and ultimately music.
Thanks to the future crew nowdays I produce dance music as a second job. The first tune I released on vynil was called "The Future, Always so clear" and was a tribute to the future crew. It was made entirely in Impulse Tracker.
Thanks FC!!!

nice story, leerees! This spirit should be still spread from demos. btw. of course is this demo worth a megathumb! ;)
2nd PC demo I saw and the soundtrack is da bomb. Especially part II
leerees: what a sad story
The best of all PC demos! Even as of 2006! :)
The best of all PC demos! Even as of 2006! :) I have all the soundtracks too! :)
The best demo ever.
that is a very important demo! (aside from the fact that is simply rulez!!!)
where is the video link?
You may watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtCW-axRJV8 And of course this prod rulez!
word up
Hmm, I thought that automatic link conversion works here... anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtCW-axRJV8

Unbreakable classics ;-)
4ever
this is the first demo i saw
One demo to rule them all!
Great!
Prolly the first PC demo i saw. It's good.
imho one of the greatest pc demos
It's never too late to vote. So I will thump up this, but I wanna give it 2 thumbs :) A true classic. Really.
When I come to this room, I must take off my hat and stand at attention for a while. I still remember the times when FC and Triton explored the world and the deepest outer spacies in such a great passion. And this one, Second Reality aka Unreal II, reminds a godfather for me.
Memories... <3
together with unreal the most impressive thingy for pc at its time.. And comeon the music at the endscroller is just something like perfect.. thumb for the memories
As I remember it was in an “A-Z” Shop where I have seen it the very first time. It was absolutely amazing. As for so many this was the first pc-demo I have ever seen. It was the start of my interest in the demo scene and in coding visual effects. It was the beginning of a new era and it has changed and influenced my whole life. Thanks!
I am not an atomic playboy!
!
The BEST ever!!!
You can find an ok'ish video here
great
forgot to vote for this one
Classic.
Kickass 1993... but it got old.
A classic, done by pioneers. I never was into PC demos and it's unlikely i will ever be, but this one impressed me a lot back then.
1993... Future Crew was the first persons that divided by zero!
Graphically, it doesn't really live up to its reputation... for prods of its era. It feels too much like a mathematics tutorial with those colored lines and plasma... I prefer the Amiga ones which were more vivid visually (NEXUS 7!!).
BUT! This evil hellspawn of Future Screw absolutely owns in terms of its SOUND. Purplemotion and Skaven might have achieved the best in demomusic (as far 8 channel S3M is concerned) for a very long time.
(perhaps that is the reason why the Flash version sucks....)
P.S. I just found out yesterday that the ball scene would DIVIDE BY ZERO if you stuff the demo in a directory (had to run it from partition root)!! Now why didn't anybody tell me that? ;_; *sob *sob

This demo is simply rulez, because at that time the PC scene was just forming. SR collected the most important effects seen on Amiga 500, put them together and sync to some really awesome music ,and voila it's done.
It showed that a PC can able to match with the Amiga -this was not so obvious at that time :)). From that year on PC-scene, CD2 technically was better but the syncing was almost non-existent.
Anyway SR brought us a real demo-feeling maybe the first time on PC, and pushed many ppl to make similar products.
And thats the reason of the hype.

As important as this demo might be for the PC demoscene, I've only learnt to appreciate it because of the outstanding music. For me there is no getting by the fact that the 2d graphics are absolutely horrible as hell. Besides, design- and effectwise, there was much more exciting stuff happening on other platforms at the time. I remember this being hyped a lot after Assembly, and the first time I saw it was when it was shown on the big screen of The Party '93 - which happened to be the same party where Arte, Origin, 9 fingers and Full Moon were released. And except for the music it did not even come close to these. Thumb for music and demoscene recruitment impact only.
Classic !
Yes, a classic :)
Yes, the music is really great!
Holy fucking shit, I can't believe this moved me as much as it just did, considering this is now 14 years after it was released!
VERY cool!
VERY cool!
Not my favorite.
Not having seen it for +10 years, I recently watched it again. Tears in my eyes and suddenly feeling very old, without having accomplished anything.
Well the visuals are okayish, BUT the soundtrack is awesome for the first to the last bit. So here it the thumb.
Amazing soundtrack, simply amazing.
Seems this one is famous... But I have been doing something else for 15 years :). I love the music and the whole thing reminds me of those great amiga prods we had back then around 1993...Which is great !
This demo is a classic! It has signed the new computer generation! This one should have more than "Rulez"!!
classic
Still so great to watch after all this time!!! To me, it never gets old!!! Simply love it!!! Sure most effects had already been seen on Amiga but the perfect match of the visuals and the awesome soundtrack by Purple Motion and Skaven! That's what makes it a perfect demo!
How can't you thumb up second reality, purple motion's music and the last 3d scene?
Its still nice <3 dosbox
For the soundtrack
Classic of the scene ;)
Of course, thumb up!
Зачот ;)

i enjoy watching second reality, and i especially enjoy the quality and diversity of music offered. however, it feels overdone to me. i'm not sure if i can express this properly, but i just don't feel that happy after watching this. piggy.
wasn't even aware of the scene until the late 90s and this still impresses me.
doesnt reach the awesomeness of Desert Dream for me. but then i wasn't around a PC until 1997 or so. nice prod tho.
ah yes, of course <3

Classic demo! The music rocks and it's fantastic!
On the other hand, graphics are not so great nowadays, and even back in the old days (compared to some Amiga stuff of 1993).

what besh said
15 years later i can say... yes - it was for the pc´ians back then one of the first big revolutions. 2nd reality was pioneer work back then and it gave a slight view to those things that happened 3-4 years later as the pc became slowly a noticable system in our belowed amiga and c64 world...
actually I knew Second Reality on C64 since long time and never cared about the original. Anyway, I think the original is a nice demo, too ;)
I've not thumbed up Second Reality yet!
well, stylewise not exactly comparable to the Amigaaa demos at the time but great soundtrack and quality 3d tech effects :>
still works
I discovered it only in 2001 but enjoyed a lot anyway. Purple Motion & Skaven deserve their popularity on my opinion, soundtrack make this prod massive. Still enjoy it today !
Still groundbreaking.
Yup!
oh yes, i forgot to thumb this shit down
oh yes, i forgot to thumb this up
oh yes
wtf where is my thumb? and why cant I give one in spite there is only a piggy registered by me for this one? wtf?
added on the 2008-08-18 by Sir
### Sir, being embarrassed ###
Made a good impact as a breakthrough for the pc scene but, to be fair, the design is really poor and the graphics are truly horrible, even for 1993 (and even more if you compare to what the Amiga scene had to offer at the same time). Also I believe it tool too much of the spotlight compared to some other PC demos. A small thumb up for the nostalgia factor only.
Of course!
Have you noticed a strange bug? It happens in all my PCs and dosbox too. The 3d whirlwind bobs in the 3rd part will move to wrong directions and crash if the directory of the demo is not located at root or something like that (try to put it in a bigger dir tree like C:\Demos\Fcrew\second for example and it happens. What a strange shit is that???
it's a known bug - probably because they used a strcpy instead of strncpy in their command line parser ... ;-)
rulez nevertheless ;-)
Optimus: Dear lord man, that's the most well-known bug in demoscene history.
gloom: I didn't actually know about that. Except that I've hit the crash many, many times... :)
OMG.
Never knew about the bug either. But then again, it never crashed on me.
Calling it the "most well-known bug in demoscene history" seems quite a stretch to me.

THE DEMO.
Boring, way too long. A finely tuned (boring) effect after effect, "yay".
Only credit is that in late 90's you'd hear that kind of music in the lamest raves in your town. Not that I knew, since I was in kindergarden. But anyway.

This demo was the dawning of PC Demoing, but it also was the sunset for the amiga dominating the scene.
It is very impressive, considering its release date. But I agree with tzaeru, it is a little boring.
The problem is that you youngsters consider it boring because you weren't in the scene when it was released. At the time it was released most demos and games weren't very technically stunning or visually stimulating. When Second Reality was released it was one of the best demos to hit the x86 platform and I guess you just had to be there to realise that.
Did not vote for this one yet ? Was a milestone on PC, the first demo on that plattform i considered as impressive back then.
One of the first demos I watched. The rotating cube with plasma, the plasmaeffects and 3d-scene at the end. Together with music by Skaven and Purple Motion. Fuck yeah! Kicks ass! RAWR!
I guess I could be called a "boring newschool kid", but at least I respect.
legendary prod by legendary gods

veeery late thumb but...)
I remember this piece didn't make me "wow" but it is really well done. Classic.
Excellent songs which contributes strongly to the mood in this demo, nice graphics for a PC demo at that time and effects that beat the amiga effects.
Seriously, people who thumb down without considering what existed at this particular moment on this particular machine are really not very serious.
It's like thumbing down a ZX81 demo because it has no colors, or saying that the first cars were lame because they did not have electric windows or ABS.
*sigh*

Love it.
timeless tunes!
Always nice to watch this demo again ! Very good work !
What? :S
With this demo I was introduced to the demoscene in the first place and Skaven's music has influenced me throughout the years. Kudos!
Simply rocks!
Its ok. Some crappy music here also.
where everything started (at least on pc...)
cool
My favourite DOS demo. Brings back so many memories. To me, this demo is perfect.
The visuals, the music by Purple Motion and Skaven ... beyond awesome!

Rocks!
This demo is probably the reason i entered the demoscene and spent the next 17 years loving the demoscene and trying todo graphics programing and music... so... yes it rulez :)
Cool. Yeah.
Good demo, especially liked the gouraud rendering which was so hard to do on my poor ST.
this prod sure made its way around. i remember people on my bbs talking about it allthough that was completely demoscene-unrelated.
i also remember floppys with a stylish self drawn future crew logo on it being swapped in the school break. nobody used the words "demo" or "production" back then. it was just the disk with the awesome! factor.

This was the demo that took me from the dying ST to the PC scene. The music was legendary and still keeps this prod watchable.
Epic.
Classic.
the 3D scene at the end rocks hard!
This was amazing in so many aspects and still is.
Was good at the time but it's aged very badly.
Legendary.
When will those PC lamers finally stop copying amiga demos?
Outstanding.
Couldn't disagree more.

Yeah. :3
This demo inspired me to learn programming and I'm sure it will inspire many people well into the future.
Always loved this one, just didn't vote yet.
It's aged, true, but not as badly as it could. Music helps, though.
Timeless.
Thiis was far from the first demo I saw. But it was the one that made me - up til that point a staunch Amiga loyalist - sit up and take the PC demo scene seriously. "Hey, I suppose this platform isn't only good for doing spreadsheets after all..."
PC demoscene classic!!
=)
=)
A friend told me that he had downloaded a new demo from a bbs. When I visited him he shaded the windows and pumped up the volume. Then the demo started and my jaw dropped. After this I started coding my first bbs intros.
Thanks to this one, pc demos stopped being a joke (damn!)
Booyaka! Classic
Great classic

My first demo I've ever seen in end of 93 that started my interest in the demoscene. Back then I watched it over and over...and over....and over while it was running in a computer store on some pc :D

I must have watched it one thousand times during the 90s. ^^
Not giving "Second Reality" a thumbs up is a crime!
I want Second Reality as the opener for every demo party ever!
Probably the first demo I ever saw. Great effects and design, but it was the awesome music from purple motion and skaven that got me hooked :) ♥ Also this inspired me to learn how to program... overall amaizing prod!

Obvious thumb up.
One of the best demo ever!
Not bad.
yep!
lemmings
Happy 20th anniversary!
in 1993 i did not have a computer :D
Great that the source code has been released. There is still plenty to learn from this old demo!
Classic!
AMIGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA port now.
Music!!!
Gamepark, Dingoo and GCW Zero port now!!!
thumb up !
Happy 20th anniversary and thank you for the source code!
Legendary is the word that describes this whole demo.
All time favourite.
of course
Yes.
Killer demo and a milestone when it was released!
obligatory thumb up ;)
Classic! And probably the first demoscene product I had seen. I particularly like the music of the final city scene!
Great!
and my 512 glöp cdc goes right here
turning my cdc into a non-sneaky one. the music raises second reality to the same level as state of the art.
I AM NOT AN ATOMIC PLAYBOY
Holy cow, so many comments! I was watching Second Reality on youtube avain today, after manymanymanymanywaytoomany years. I have almost forgotten that you guys existed..... :O
it's the star wars of demoscene
Credit for being well known and a mega demo, but slow paced, uninteresting graphics and boring music.

How safe for some here for me the final reason to be interested in digital art. But I will be forever grateful to you, Future Crew.
This demo is so awesome. Although i find some of the DnD artwork to be a bit silly ^-^
Amazing production from Future Crew. Perfect synchronization and nice oldschool effects. PC demoscene legend since '93!
Makes me wish I was born twenty years earlier.
Certainly one of the best demos on PC in its day. Of course amiga had the upper hand as far graphics and design went, but this was one of the first really competent counterparts. I really don't understand how this is still (or at least was for a long time) the "best pc demo" in so many people's minds, just fast-forward two years ahead and there was immensly more maturity by then already. A lot of ugly parts here too; the plasma cube? rotozoomer? the particle cloud? And of course everything just presented on an empty black backgrounds without any sort of overarching design.
Far from hopeless though, the plasma after the rotozoomer especially with that part in the soundtrack is still something I do adore, wonderful melody and harmony. The soundtrack's pretty damn cheesy. PM did far, FAR better tracks. Apart from the cheesy instruments, the orchestral stuff by Skaven especially in the end is quite alright. Overall a fine piece of memorabilia from a simpler era.

.
never too late to thumb up a classic
I really don't understand how some people say this is better than Crystal Dream 2. The music is great...for the first two minutes, and then it becomes so boring you wish to unplug your speakers. The 3D graphics are inferior to CD2. Way over-rated. CD2 is far better in my opinion.
One of the classic DOS demos. It was amazing to see that only 50% of the codebase was Assembly yet it runs at a good speed on a 386.
What noby said.
I've never been a big fan of 2nd reality. It's ok and I can understand the impact but there are better demos from the time on PC. I actually dig Optic Nerve-demo from the same compo more than 2nd reality due to better looking effects and a bit better palette. But 2nd reality does have a nice pace to it and does work on almost anything with a 486 or better cpu so for being a solid and high content production that almost anyone could run is something to pay atleast some admiration 2nd reality is always a fun to watch so that is why I'm giving it a fair thumb up.
got me into the scene, still love it
Only knew Unreal back in the days, never heard of Unreal II Secod Reality back then, but still, awesome demo! Thumbs up!
Impressive for the time and the platform.
Music and presentation are great for this platform.
I'm not able to adequately estimate coolness of the demo as for 1993, but one thing I know for sure: Purple Motion's soundtrack is the eternal masterpiece.
Eternal classic, I used to rewatch it several times in a row just to listen to the amazing soundtrack over and over.
Marked the beginning of a new era in PC demos!
When people talk and ask about each others' hobbies, I tend to mention demoscene. Even at this day and age, some people then ask: "Like Second Reality?"
Forgotten thumb.
Forgotten thumb.
I love this
Just classic << I want a Linux port!
What, in my humble opinion anyhow, makes Second Reality the classic it is is the fact it is one of the first big titles on the PC for which the creators decided to treat the demoscene like the art form it is.
Second Reality's contemporaries usually followed the following pattern:
1: introduction to random routine/effect
2: show random routine/effect
3: Goto step 1.
FC's own Unreal did that heavily a year earlier, in 1993 itself (Second Reality's year), CD2 still did that heavily. Not Second Reality though. To me, that is what makes it great. Technologically it's not the absolute pinnacle, not even for its era and the music does have its cheesy qualities but the package as a whole simply stands out of a contemporary crowd of mostly technical demonstrations.

All time favourite. In love with music by Skaven!!!
My favourite DOS demo.
Timeless.
demoscene? well, you made it relevant. nuff said. can't believe I haven't thumbed it yet.
Found it on that bundled "Soundblaster Pro" CD-ROM, which included all kinds of demoscene content. I couldn't stop watching all of this stuff, including situations like "hey dad, look what your 386 can do!". But well, considering all that content in this particular cd, 2nd reality totally won. And so I got curious about the demoscene, only much later figuring out what it "actually is". And then embracing it. Thanks for having me!

25 years.
nothing new to say, just rockz!
Best Demo. Don't know. But definitely awesome
This demo at 2018, is STill Amazingk!
while i was not present at the party i have been told that this one was shown in an isolated classroom while the real demos ( Amiga demos ) were shown on the bigscreen. Well its a thumb up for the demo
I just watched it again.. although looks very ancient I still love music like if it was modern attempt to create the sound.
True classic, that became one of the pc demo icons.
The greatest of all times. Watching this 25 years ago was a life defining moment.
Still watching in 2020!
Well yeah!
I watched this demo two or three times, and I should say: LEGEND!
Also music (by Purple Motion and Skaven's second part specifically) is gorgeous.

Forgotten thumb
Just ran it on my "new" 486DX/33, real hardware since a VERY long time. In the cyan vectorballs part I get a runtime error, and the screen goes black until the next part starts. Google told me that there is a 2nd_fix.exe or something like that. Didn't manage to find that. Any hints? Playing this with a GUSPnP so probably some timer returns 0 and all goes to shreds.
deedeedu tsss tsss tsss tssss deedudeedeedu tsss tsss tsss tsss tudududu dududududu dududududu dudeedu
The Masterpiece, the Legend, True Classic. Atomic playboy!

Can't remember what it's supposed to fix exactly, but give it a try.
Random fact: The picture with the bear warrior, he has no helmet, but later in the credits screenshot he has a helmet. I realized that after only reading the whole Mega-Ega scroller by S-Cubed :)
The nuts also don't have any threads in them.
Long due thumb for a piece of demoscene history.
Here's a forgotten thumb to get it moving upwards in the all time top list.
YEAH!
le classique
Legend!
The master pierce.
This probably deserves a thumb.
Artistically late by several years, slow code, wasn't good back then and didn't age well.
this single demo got me into the demoscene. still love how creative everything is. was impressed watching this for the first time, in 2023!
cool
Still a favorite! Remember watching it in the 90s, and still love watching it today!
Of course!
the music, the effects, and the design is all inspired (copied) from the kefren's desert dream from AMIGA. absolutely overrated production. only the pc sceners think, that this is best demo ever, because they had never seen anything like this before :P
