Feels very unfinished. Very nice beginning and rest of the demo is nice as well, yet, it still looks like a typical TBL demo for me. I'll wait for the final version.

If this wins, it will be the first time an amiga demo beats pc competition fair and square ... unlike that lapsuus crap

Very good, the 3d animations are so smooth and realistic and the design is cool.

excellent demo, you must be torturing the hell out of that poor 68060 :) (when it actually runs on a real amiga, and not in uae)

Mmm,. I get strange bugs and stucks in the scene with the robot inside the building, in WinUAE. I don't know what are the right configuration to make it work properly :(

From whatever I've seen from ASM TV though, when it ended up I had to pick up my jaw from the floor1!!

after what i've seen in the first half (which is visible in uae), not providing the videocapture of this is TOO cruel =)

Well... According to Asm rules, it's completely ok to release a demo for Amiga emulator running on PC. After all Java demos work pretty much the same way :)

So - Thumbs up.

the version linked is our pre-party version, not the one shown on the big screen. although it runs fine on my 060 right here it's a bit out-of-sync/missing a part or two

Beautiful, well designed, and good use of old tricks. Oh, and of course the 20% new stuff.
rulez added on the 2006-08-06 12:04:38 by Betong Betong
I ran totaly outta words as I saw this passing through the stream- wire.
The unfinished version ran (until the break at the yellow robo-bug) in a very pleasant framerate. In my point of view this (no matter how much 3d trick-trick-precalc-prerender-you name it) is the best presented TBL demo since Rain. Direction, the textures + graphics, the splendid tune and the codework that gets all this running at nearly 20 fps (some tiny stuckers but who cares) on 060 deserves a bow down.
And it's loooong without getting boring. An instant classic I'd say. Can't wait 'til the final version...hurry guys ;)

With all theese fancy harware accellerated PC demos allways dominating the ASM compos, this surely warms an Amiga Sceners hart. I think I might have cried if I was present at the ASM and saw it on the big screen ;)

IRIS should win more often at BP,this obviously triggered something in TBL to kick ass at the next big democompo.... :D

as already told: lacks consistency, and thus it's a bit boring, but other than that it's impressive enough.. september is too far away for the non jerky version with this demand though ;)

rulez added on the 2006-08-06 20:10:20 by leijaa leijaa
I like the music and most of the gfx, and as always, there's a great uplifting feeling that works especially in the party place.

However, this has quite much recycled stuff and feels a bit unfinished. Oh and the cubemap-animations can be spotted way too easily :)
rulez added on the 2006-08-06 20:19:03 by kurli kurli
codewise:
it's animated skybox city.. and most of the effects have been seen before in tbl demos. i really do like the shadow effects (beneath the robot fish and in the landscape) : damn cool. and it's still a solid engine. i hope to see it also on a real amiga some day.

designwise:
incredible!! just when you think you say the peak in the development of tbl demos these guys come and beat themselves (and the rest of the scene). it's hard for me to describe it. it's very demotivating in a way and even makes me want to quit all my demomaking activities. it's simply impossible for a "normal" crew to reach this levels of design/presentation quality.. but that this level of is at all possible in the scene today (and from a <150 man strong team) is a big fart in the face of the games industry =)) YEAH! fucking A :))
rulez added on the 2006-08-06 20:31:17 by earx earx
Actually, that might be the point of doing an amiga demo. It requires a lot of work, but imagine having to produce the same work at a higher resolution, with a higher number of polys on pc.
added on the 2006-08-06 20:43:39 by _-_-__ _-_-__
I still can't understand why -on PC- we don't have the same level of creativity, good taste, beautiful art direction, using those classic but so efficient cinema effects.
This is a pure uplifting show. Great. Magic. Thank you.

PC demomakers have now some hard homework to complete.

Overall, another TBL classic. The 'organic' bits did it more for me than the machines, especially the birds at the end, we need more crows in demos!

I like the vertical credits, the music, the greetings with the mech/robot, the fish-robot that lights the ground of the sea, the crows, the "interference" effects were nice... but I'm slightly tired of seeing the female body/face reused and reused again... you lazy 3d modeller! ;-) It's a quite good model but I wouldn't mind about seeing new models.

It's way better than "Requiem" and probably one of best TBL demos :-)

Silkcut mountains may be less advanced technically but looked slightly better. You may have put a pair of crows flying over the snow-covered-mountains.

For the next release it may be a good idea to make more uniform the theme of the demo. Anyway this is one of the best amiga demos released ever and worths a thumb up :-)

P.S. I wonder if it would be possible to release a CGX/AHI version (maybe only a c2p has been used for the gfx and AFAIK the sound is usualy a PCM stream). Krabob^MKD is an expert in RTG/RTA so you may ask him.

very ten years or more ago.
Anyway, totaly awesome prods.

The executable version which has been on the net (until now) was the placeholder version, which we submitted 15 hours before the democompo just so that we would get registered into the competition itself. The "download" link should shortly be updated to point to the executable of the demo that was actually shown at the competition. (Alkaron was the first person to ever test-run it on a real 1200.)

In case you wonder, my 1260 board broke during the flight to Helsinki (one chip came loose!) and after calling around a bit without being able to source another 060 board, we decided to solely rely on WinUAE for the party version.

We will release a proper 060 version in about 2 months (work has priority right now). Till then, enjoy the party version of the demo!

I wonder how they manage this monumental pompous mood all the time. All effects automatically seem to be the most incredible thing you've seen before because of the music :) The framerate looks fine on original Amiga. Atleast in the skybox based scenes I have seen. It crashed after the crawling robot in the tunnel (which kicked ass). Massive graphics/code and sound all around :).. damn you

thought - tbl seemed to win over the pc entries because of concrete scenes.. robots, crows, etc. lapsuus won for the same reasons.. scenes of real-life things. pc demos seem to be more and more abstract scenes, like spikes 'n' swirls, right down to the entry that was just cubes. so in conclusion, when it comes to the big screen, you can add all the smoothing and shading you want, but it's what you do with the polys that counts. (granted, i prefer the smoothing and shading more when i watch it at home :)

Very good for an Amiga demo!

The graphics are superb, the music is good in place but sometimes too chaotic and it's all VERY nicely presented.

The only downer is the low polygons and Amiga limitations but that's not as bad as usual.

This is how an Amiga demo should be done! Lightyears ahead of the usual newschool stuff!

renders any other amiga-demo obsolete
rulez added on the 2006-08-13 23:32:40 by hfr hfr
Does absolutely NOT render any other Amiga demo obsolete, but it is very "State or the art", meaning that every era has it's prime productions.
For the early ages it was mega demos such as RSI Megademo - for the 90s it was demos such as Desert Dream and Tint and since the year 2000 we have seen several good demos by, for instance, TBL, which more or less all represent mad skills and desire to be the elite of the Amiga demo scene - as we exspect TBL to be.

What struck me most when watching this demo are the beautiful and perfect textures and backgrounds. Along with the motions and the music, they set up an atmosphere, which is close to perfection.

I have always thought that a demo needs to have a certain feel to it, in order to make it big - and this demo is big - even big enough to wipe out all other competiotion at ASM06, regardless the platform. This fact and the demo itself makes it a jaw-dropping creation from TBL and I would give it a coup de coeur if I had enough glöps on my account... ;)

I think I can thumb this up, on the condition that the next big TBL production is not an Amiga-one (at least not AGA+060).

One the one hand, I think it's hard for TBL to come up with something better next time... I think this is simply the definitive Amiga demo for this era. Better to go out in a blaze of glory then.

And on the other hand, aren't we curious to see what TBL can do on a platform with more power and possibilities?
I'd like to see if they can pull off this kind of style, but in a more polished way, more polys, better shading, and perhaps more effects.
PS2 might be a good platform, I really liked 4 Edges.

Oh, and...

I have to second psonice on this one. Starstruck feels really game-inspired. It also feels like at least two different-themed demos smashed together - one with a raven and another with robots.

Quite nice overall, I particularly loved the greets part and the message it sends but I don't really feel awed by this one and would've personally left starstruck out of the top-3 at asm06.

To get it work on WinUAE simply have a kick3.1 rom, insert the workbench adf, make a filesystem shared folder in hard disks and put the demo directory in here. Start workbench and double click on starstruck.exe. Make sure you set the 68040 processor, the emulation speed at fastest possible, tha aga chipset and at least 64Mb of z3 ram. WinUAE is absolutely the best way to appreciate this superb demo.

@TAD:
An AMIGA 1200 or 4000 AGA with 68060 + 64MB RAM and a PAL monitor is definitely the best way to appreciate this demo ;)
(it runs nearly the same speed)

AFIK adjusting the 040 UAE isn't always the best choice ... I for my part (when I need an Amiga on PC) have my CPU settings to 020+FPU.

It's a pity to have to use WinUAE to enjoy this great Amiga demo. TBL could do the best demo ever if they could use a powerful PC... In the Assembly party they had to use WinUAE to show the demo :-/ ???

Expecially the quality you achieved in character animation and the complexity of some scenes.

ok, this was the best demo of the compo. It still feels like any other TBL amiga demo that I have seen recently - not necessarly a bad thing, as they do what they do extremely well. But in places it is a re-run of ocean machine/little nell.

Some very very nice design ideas in there, and it is probably pushing the envelope for the amiga hardware quite alot.

i personally think lapsuus was more stunning (which doesn't mean this demo roxx'n'kixx).
especially the soundtrack is something amazing, only few scenes were average for this masterpiece.

amiga demos like this both proofs that amiga scene still rocks *and* it almost demotivates less talended coders from their effort ('coz they may think they will never reach the level of TBL)

was the all effort worth it?
hell yeah!

The uae capture is good. But the framerate hurts the scene with the flying lady. And the blur of the mpg actually enhanced the overall experience somehow... Thanks anyway, the mpgs music quality more or less sucked...

if you look closely "the flying lady" is pretty smooth while only the background "animates" at lower framerate; guess why.

I would like to see a grab from the real machine to put this demo into proper perspective. As mesmerizing as the demo is, the blurry video and the fact that it was shown on UAE only do surely put it into a better light.

i thumbed this up already, and if i could i would thumb it up again.. not for the visuals, sure it's an "impressive" demo, but basically it's recycled stuff with really good design.. HOWEVER, the soundtrack is one of the best i've ever heard.. i find myself looping it(before i got the mp3 i was looping the divx in mplayer) in winamp.. exactly my style.. i'd sell my soul if i could get close to what Olof is doing... massive amounts of <3

it remains great work, but the ripping incident (which i'd like to hear cleared up, please, cos from where im sitting it looks like a frame by frame steal), and the way it looks on real hw has taken the shine off it a bit for me.

it's the blockiness of the skyboxes, i think. there's just too much of the 3d done on prerendered textures, and too little that is actually rendered realtime for me to be blindingly impressed by the rendering code (compared to when i thought some of the shadows, 3d except the foreground object, etc might be realtime - yea, naive i know).

it's still a fine piece of work from the guys, especially louie, though. :) i was just a lot more impressed before the ripping came to light and before i saw it on real hardware, talked to some amiga coders about it and so on. it looks a lot better on video where it smooths together a lot better.
added on the 2007-01-05 11:17:45 by smash smash
An excellent demo, though I think the platform is a bit overhyped in this case. It's not exactly a 7 MHz Amiga 500 we're talking about here, but rather a heavily upgraded machine with one of the fastest 68k processors available and lots of RAM... Compare it to high-end 486 demos, because that's about the specs of the machine, save for the more awkward graphics modes. Still great though, but not surprisingly good.

<3 i adore this <3
Retro yet innovative demo DESIGN. The execution is just awesome: SYNCH, themes, colors, scenes, attitude, MUSIC, DYNAMICS, cheats etc... Superb skybox-cheats for great FPS! <3 :-D

As great as it is, it's not flawless:
- The 2d babes, like the other clipart overlays, are very stylish, but 3d babes will never work for me.
- some things were obviously rushed: landscape scene for example is super ugly.
- too many themes.
- a few scenes, like dot-trees on ball, did not fit.

I disagree totally with complaints about
- ripping
- cheating/tricks
These things do not ruin the demo. They make it better. It's not coder porn and it's not ment to be. There are many types of porn, see?
rulez added on the 2007-03-01 01:09:48 by spookysys spookysys
also
- related to the 3d-babe issue: some scenes are too much game-inspired
- some low-poly skybox artifacts (appears rushed again)

I didnt mean to be rude talking about "clipart" I was referring to the black 2d artwork overlays, which I assumed were photoshop brushes from the internet(?), but i really shouldn't make that assumption since I don't know..

I'm happy this has reached all-time top on pouet! (finally something new!)

The "what do they want..." dialog is taken from the Babylon 5 spin off "Third Space", but as Silkcut had a similar thing going (taken from Gangs Of New York), one can grant that a fashion.
As mentioned above, a lot of the content shown in Starstruck refers heavily to design productions and projects by dstrukt.
In the final analysis the last 2 big TBL prods may have went a little bit over the top, meaning the inspiration got a little too close to the original.

I didn't comment on this already?!@

Soundtrack is spectacular. I think the last time I heard anything from Blaizer was from Pinball Fantasies way back when.

I don't think there was a single part in this demo that didn't keep me wanting MORE - though the terrain part I found to be the weakest part. Though that's like mentioning the least attractive woman on a supermodel calendar - they're all still pretty hot, yeah? :D

Ok, so Starstruck on Falcon is here.

It's the final version, so it differs a bit from the Assembly release seen on the Amiga, but it's still kicking ass :-)

Download the demo for Falcon
Video capture from the Falcon

The gamma is a bit low on the video capture, might have to give it another shot later on.

Wow! This is the final version! O_o

Incredible! The Skybox movies are much more smooth with the Falcon that on WinUAE with my 2,5 ghz dualcore!!!
With the Falcon the spider mechanical scene and the daughter scene running constantly to 2vbl !!!(CT60 72/25mhz)

I rediscovered the Blaizer soundtrack with this dsp version, the frequency is much hight and the stereo sounds effects are incredible ! O_O

Otherwise this new version is even more beautiful, Kalms... you must realise on amiga !

Thank you Kalm /tbl, Tank you ''Magic'' Mikro for this version even better!

so Amiga still > Atari! :D

One must ask if there is ever going to be a better and newer Amiga demo that gets any better than this :)

Even after 3 years this demo is still just plain awesome.

I have honestly found I can watch this on my real A1200 060 and I don't mind it one bit. Yes, it is a little slow in some areas.

Overall though it is still great. Considering this demo was mainly developed in WinUAE.

One must wonder if Kalms has fixed his A1200 060 or got another accelerator board to finally finish this on a real Amiga to optimise it more.

At least get others to test and find out if it improves or not.

The Atari falcon port is also extremely good. I did notice there were potentially less colours in some areas though. Overall though, both are just plain excellent.

Will TBL ever release another Amiga demo up to this standard. Time will tell.

5/5.
10/10.
Cannot fault this demo. Would have been great to see it at the big screen at the Assembly party event.

Really really really amazing ! I could not imagine such an hign quality demo coud be realised one day on Falcon.
It's nearly incredible for me ! Design, atmosphere, gfx like great PC demos, with much much lower machine time.
Really Thx to Black Lotus. You're incredible !
Very good moment ! =))

As an old fart atarian, it just blows me away to see this of all demos on falcon. The demo is outstanding, almost everything perfectly placed... i just hate that visor wearing bitch for no special reason :D This prod is definitely on the 1st lanes in my personal cool book, altho i could not really tell why the hell i love starstruck so much. Massive demo, tbl... extra kudos! And extra-extra kudos for the f030 port!

If it can be ported to Falcon, then can it be a particularly good demonstration of the Amiga AGA platform. Maybe the effective platform could be something like "060 + some weird graphics pipeline that had to be worked around"

I just realized that the pre-rendered 3d background part starting at 1:53 looks eerily similar (in too many details) to this early Half-Life 2 concept art image for later removed Air Exchange chapter: Airex reactor by Viktor Antonov.

Yep -- on one hand, it is kind of moot putting together a final this long afterward, but on the other hand, we had it in a nearly-working state ... and I felt a need to scratch the coding itch during Revision 2018.

This demo is still relevant, after all these years so it really doesn't matter if the final comes out after 12 years of the original release :)

If the coding itch grows bigger, then the only cure will be a new TBL demo.. ;)

9 years after Atari port, incredible! Thank you very much for this gift TBL
Maybe a new release ? captured dreams in "HD" ? ^^
This demo gets more impressive each time I see it. I noticed some new details now:

- There is light inside the visor of the woman hanging from the robot arm
- The orange haze below the woman extends out between the rotating turbine
- The crawling robot is affected by the surrounding shadows
- There is some pulsing light on the fractal trees

But that might aswell have been in the original :) Anyway great details and scenes from beginning to end! The crow at the end deserves an oscar for best animation on amiga !
