Btw. where can I grab the music file ;) ?

Sometimes this demo looks like made of scraps of previous TBL demos. Anyway, i like it. This voxel stuff is strange...

Meh. Just rehashed stuff and some of the scenes looked were so chunky I thought they were in textmode. Music was ok in part, but got repetetive and annoying.

Personally i think Loonies kicked your ass this year!

=Winnerdemo

This is nowhere close to Silkcut. The new voxelengine may be technically nice, but it looks very ugly. And is the demo even using all 256 colors? Many scenes look like they just use 16.

"And is the demo even using all 256 colors? Many scenes look like they just use 16."

I was thinking the same thing. I'm very surprised this won.
Nice work guys! You beat us AGAIN! :)

Blocky & Slow Voxels + Graphic errors in the Cubes-part + Reusing Ideas = Thumbs down for Namevoting.

The Music was ok. But Loonies was far better this time. Sorry guys.

it was really cool... the blocky voxels looked awsome on the big screen ;)

Well yeah the voxel-parts were kind of crossing the thin line between 'impressive for technical reasons' versus 'this does not look good' but the rest of the show I liked. Next to that, killer soundtrack.

The demo does indeed show some signs of being rushed (for one thing, it is very crash prone on some machines) -- once I get back home I'll look into making a final version of it.

I second Ghandy. Although a very great Demo with some sexy effects I kinda liked the loonies one a bit better. Great nonetheless.

rulez added on the 2005-03-29 10:33:32 by Shifter Shifter
Superb scenes and amazing quality of music, graphics and code, but fails to be the best demo ever because of the general lack of design coherency.

Yolk, damn you, where's the female voice sample from... I haven't been sleeping two days now to find out where I've been hearing that one before!
added on the 2005-03-29 10:39:10 by dixan dixan
Very nice beginning, usual 3d code by TBL, at least the voxel scenes were something interesting (not always looking good though, perhaps some noise would hide the bad elements (Like in the Noxie intro)).

The dancing is not motion captured. Repeat, the dancing is not motion captured. Holy shit.

Technically impressive voxels (the coder in me again says: Holy shit), but they do look a bit ugly.

IMHO, better than silkcut. I can't decide whether i liked this or loonies more, which is why I voted them both "rules" at the party ;-)

Are the credits supposed to end so abruptly?

rulez added on the 2005-03-30 08:30:17 by Dalton Dalton
Completely great demo. Just a shame that TBL relies so heavily on 3D modelling. Without good 3D source material their demos would be a bit.. well, they wouldn't win. :) Or so it would seem anyway. That's probably why it was so nice to see the voxel scenes, even though they were really blocky and not entirely beautiful - finally a new effect. ;) But yeah, excellent dancing ninja. Boobs could have been bigger.

rulez added on the 2005-03-30 09:37:04 by Kami68k Kami68k
actually, as i mentioned to the tbl guys after the compo, this demo is way too boring. i mean.. it suffers from the same problem as so many demos did in the change from old school to new school.. we KNOW you can do technical stuff, now add some more kickass design :)
and that's why the only scene in this that really did it for me was the one in the screenshot.
added on the 2005-03-30 09:42:07 by leijaa leijaa
Superdemo! The soundtrack is fantastic and the voxels are way cool, the best I've ever seen on 68k. If one should pinpoint something not perfect, it would be the transitions which sometimes are a bit rough. But gotta love this one !
rulez added on the 2005-03-30 11:05:07 by evil evil
now, just a question..

how come that the voxel engine has the same bugs as the polygon engine? just bad precision perhaps but still sounds a bit odd for a voxel engine (bugs are on big areas, voxel bugs shouldnt have that, right?).

and, why doesnt they animate the voxel? whats the point in making voxel if you dont fuck up the geometry? its not like its a nice rendering style (if you want abstract rendering have a look at the yodel demo - 32 shades blabla..)...

otherwise than this mysterious "voxel" engine, wich looks like crap and doesnt do anything fun (exept for some palettefading - or maybe thats just because the low bpp it looks like that.. uehrm)...

ok, ehrm, music was rather funny graphics where ok.

There's just too much in it that does not work for me (the dancer, the voxels...) to give it a honest thumb up.
added on the 2005-03-30 12:02:51 by tomaes tomaes
Each years, TBL enhaces, in search of perfection. The only last year weakness were (in silkcut):
- 3D characters were too static.
- no experimental code (what TBL does best).

... so this year, we got an outstanding voxel technique, and a "skinned" character, implying the move of some phusic object.

gloom: sorry, but good (i'd say majestic) scene design doesn't always reflect in good general demo design.
Also, I can't see how the platform could affect the sense for artistic direction and graphic composition. Expecially since this has been coded on a emulator.

quite nice but somehow left me cold. The music was nice, the voxel stuff was good, so were the cubes (i'm just a sucker for that kind of stuff) but the chick, for example, didn't do anything for me and the overall 'design' and direction was rather lame.

Maybe i'll need to watch it a few times more.

Thank you! With you releasing demos at BP it's worth the trip to Germany EVERY time.

It seems like you have done some refining on your code, though I only saw it on the big screen untill yet.

It seems that that 3d-scenes run faster (nice) - and it seems that you use a larger area on the screen for showing (that area was quite small at some places in Silkcut)

favourite stuff: the dancing girl (of course), the greetings part, that sadly ended to abruptly and the credits with "Ancient machine" :D.

Make my trip the next many years aswell - please :)

A very nice demo from TBL as usual, awesome looking voxels. The music is great too, but those intentional sound bugs towards the end annoy the fuck out of me. I thought it was a bug in the compo but the mp3 has the exact same errors. it would have been better without them imo.

Magic, wonderful to see TBL doing some intressting code again, the voxels rule so much it hurts, so so beautiful. The scenes where also very nice, and hearing that the girl scene was actually not a motion capture in unbelivible. Great effort.

I actually didn't like this. Why?
Well, the voxels didn't look so good at close range, the music wasn't to my taste, and the 3D scenes (except for the floating Dali-esque city, the dancer, cubes and greets) were kinda ugly.
All in all, I much prefer Silkcut and its bitchin' electrosound track.

Massive shit. It felt a bit like Silkcut v1.1 on the compo, but after a few watches I must say I now prefer this to its predecessor. Even if the landscape in Silkcut did look better. Yolk's wonderful soundtrack deserves an extra mention. My 2nd favourite Amiga entry, second only to Funktion. :)

dr_doom: probably this can't be clearly seen on the video (i got only 030 amiga thus only got video version). Anayways, these type of tricks are possible and indeed used sometimes... if mesh-with-bones is too costly to calculate (which may indeed be if each vertex has to be mixed from multiple matrixes), you can spread the calculation over 2 rendering frames. Have a look at some kangaroo intro/demo from around 1998, 1999 or 2000, there was a metaballs effect which did similar things.

nice work again from tbl. after d0Dge describes me the coding problems when using voxels i understand why it hits the first place. but i think the most non-coders will not understand those 3D voxel worlds... and they do not look very pretty

The music rocks bigtime, and the voxel effect is ugly but cool.

Though: TBL have done demos like this for years now. Yeah, there are a few improvements like the skinned/y dancer with fake ribbon physics, but this cant hide the fact that apart from marginal improvements it was the same color scheme, the same landscapes, the same design and the same female low-poly model for years now. And honestly, I don't understand people applauding wildly for a 50-polygon object with a prerendered sky cube around it; everyone should perfectly know that the Amiga is capable of pulling that off.

Still a thumb up this time, but presumably the last one if things won't change in one way or the other.

lovely prod, imresses from the first view. it's quite different from previous demos: there is no tbl zoom, the new voxel engine, fantastic animated model, etc., seems that tbl read the opinions about prevous prods ;)

yolk made excellent soundtrack, the tbl music style changed too: from industrial (as in p.circle, l.nell, silkcut) to ambient/new age.

only credits looks a bit empty, but they fit the music, and then OK.

The final version is out. Currently it's available at ftp://mirror.support.nl/pub/tbl/download/amiga/tbl-oceanmachinefinal.lha, but it should also show up at www.scene.org & the breakpoint FTP soon.

A video with the original 256kbit/s MP3 soundtrack and all fx running at 25fps is available at ftp://mirror.support.nl/pub/tbl/download/movies/TBL_-_Ocean_Machine_(non-realtime_DivX5_640x400).avi; given some luck (and a bribe if necessary), robotriot might make a realtime capture.

drdoom/psycho: looking into the code, it turned out that the dancing girl's interpolation code was broken and would stutter at some framerates; this should be fixed now though. Thanks for the heads up.

bartman: while most of the demosystem has been ported to build as a native Win32 application, some major parts are still missing. The sound decoding/mixing and the rasterizer backends contain a fair bit 680x0 assembly and there are no C versions of those piceces of code. Additionally, there is usually a bit of new assembly code for each part in the demo (usually some sort of image compositing or postprocessing filter). Making a working, native Win32 build out of the demo is thus not as easy as pressing a button yet. Making a video is easier and more cross-platform compatible, and our current opinion is that the visual result of a 640x400x25fps video is good enough.

Perfect Circle, Little Nell, Magia, Silkcut and Ocean Machine are all names of bands, mostly rock... Now I just wonder if that's intentional, or if rock bands happen to draw from the same sources when looking for names as TBL does. Time to inspect the record... erm mp3 collection of the TBL members :)
added on the 2005-04-11 03:46:12 by Scali Scali
"Ocean Machine" is the name of my track I did in September 2003. The title is my invention and I didn't (at least consciously ;) take it from a rock band. The TBL guys just nicked the name for their demo. :-P
added on the 2005-04-11 10:22:23 by yolk yolk
Kalms: nice. But you know, everyone has a realtime bones engine these days. ;) Look at Heartcore. I thought it was so trivial that mine is only shown for three seconds. So hah!

Anyway, remember that next year we want you to show off your 3D modeller's (impressive) skills a little less and put some more effort into original code. Maybe experiment with a different style, cause it's getting a bit hard to tell your demos apart.

Also, TBH, the faking in Ocean Machine was too obvious to be interesting. Like the pretextured box scene. It was pretty in itself (but then, softshadows on an entirely off-scene usually is), but when the other boxes moved under the arch you just added the shadows onto the prerendered ones on the floor texture. Really :). You could've played around with some shadetables or something to get proper blending. And the low (256x256?) resolution on the skybox in the first effect sort of ruined the feel of the scene, i think. It was much too clear what was part of the skybox and what wasn't.

I've decided that my favourite part is the voxel scenes, despite the fact that they're pretty ugly. It's the best part because it's the first time in years I've seen something really new from TBL.

So, consider that _constructive_ criticism. :) It's really a great demo.

Kalms: maybe I'll just put some complete 3d scenes in my own voxel engine (which is better than yours, mind you) and add perspective and integrate it with my realtime bones engine (which is better than yours, mind you). Then I'll put naked chicks on a skybox and make them dance, state-of-the-art style, to some SID music, while the whole thing spins around a C= logo. after rewatching this demo and the previous kalms-rubber-tbl-demos i think i was wrong in saying that this is not one of their best demos. actually it IS one of their best demos, even if it has the same style since years (don't we all have our same style?). if the people like this style...who cares? they still shout loud when this kind of demos run. :)
anyway as hundret times said before: the voxel is ugly, but hell of good code, too, so it rulez. i loved the first voxel object most. looked better than the other voxel scenes. ah, and the beginning, when the girl opens her eyes...that was cool.
anyway it has some new code in it, nice and well done 3d scenes, demo-like scenes/objects which make no sense but look cool (much demos has that and we love that demos.. ;) and of course F#?*@G GOOD MUSIK!

The best TBL demo since Rain, closely followed by Silkcut. One thing though: this is still a collection of superb parts which don't really seem to glue together that well. I hope to see a TBL demo based around one design/theme/story whatever. Otherwise, fab music, fab visuals, fab code. The greetings scene is the best part.

@Jamie: would that be an Amiga release? Would be fantastic to see such a talented coder/team competing against the cream of the amiga scene again.

I've been wondering about one thing concerning the dancing character. It seems that the character is animated using rigid skinning, so that there is no interpolation across the joints, and cuts appear (like at the hips) when they are bent. As far as I've understood, the motion is animated using bones, and then put out as keyframed meshes with interpolation between them. Using this technique it would be possible to use better mesh skinning with decent interpolation. Is rigid skinning the only option available in lightwave or something?

This demo has grace. Yolk's awesome music is what sets the mood and the demo follows well. I like it most of the TBL demos I've seen recently and I suspect I'll be liking it for many years to come.

I struggled with what is the underlying "theme" here. Seems that this is more of a poetic demo. Nature, soft forms and abstract.

The voxels could use some precision but I still found myself admiring their beauty, the choral type structure and the perfect ending deserve mention.

I have an urge to mention almost every part of it but I'll refrain from doing so and will just close with saying that the dancer was one of the most beautiful scenes based on the real-world I've ever seen in a demo.

Grace.

looking back at this demo, and my previous comment which found its way into starstruck :), ocean machine really does stand out on its own compared to many other tbl releases. yolk's music helps, along with the voxel scenes. i think those voxel parts would be deemed ugly on a pc, but i admire them here, as both a feat of code on the amiga and a middle finger to the pc world of polygons.

Awesome demo (i already thumb upped this months ago), but i was listening to Art Of Chill 3, a great compilation from Platipus.

Well, the Ocean Machine soundtrack is very similarto the 1st track of this Cd, Shulman - First Came The Stars (Bluetech Remix) .

Listen to this track, and tell me what you think ! :)

I fucked up the video last night, the audio was not correct (event though I spent hours trying to get it right). I thought it was fine and uploaded it. But found out today it wasn't. Damn phase inversions in the vocals more or less erased it entierly. :)

The video is replaced with a new one now, sorry about that..

added on the 2010-06-10 13:40:56 by okkie okkie
Pretty old discussion and I think there are hundreds of demos who borrowed stuff aswell.
added on the 2010-06-10 13:56:15 by ltk_tscc ltk_tscc
its not just about "borrowing ideas" ...

its the lame act of stealing the frames of a video
and not even wasting a second on using a own or free photo...
thats shows just a serious lack of respect
for the work of other artists
added on the 2010-06-10 14:22:14 by xeNusion xeNusion
the original Nike frames contain a female with two eyes, a nose and a mouth, set against a non-de script background. there was not much "design" there to begin with. for a zero budget independent demo, it's kind of practical to just "rip" those frames rather than hire a model and studio to take your "own" generic photographs?

i think i'm right and xeNusion is wrong.

Haven't thumbed this yet? What's wrong with me? This is one of the most memorable demos I have ever seen. One of my absolute favourites of all time. The music stands on its own. I don't care one bit of the entire plagiarism discussion, this demo is religion to me.

@tari3x: infofile says "AGA Amiga (1200 or 4000), with 68060 including FPU, and 32MB fastmem." you're probably missing the FPU or the memory i would guess.

@psenough: sorry, took me a while to get back to this. Couple of questions:

1. This sounds like a very useful lead, but where do you see that infofile? The txt file in the download says "Real Amiga with 68060, 32+MB fastmem and AGA".

2. What setting does fastmem correspond to? I tried a couple but am getting error 20.

To answer my first question - there's [nfo] in the corner.

Still can't run it though - went through many combinations. Would love to use it for a demoshow - if anyone has any thoughts, would be much appreciated!

Another demo where I failed to say how brilliant this one is!

One of my favourites. The Yolk soundtrack is an all time classic.

french is so poetic.

the french: mustard is strong and this is why it's good.
For me... the best demo from TBL.
