Great technically (graphics, vocoder). Even the scenes themselves were pretty good.
But there's the horrible motion-blur, the, ahem, lacklustre transitions, the music itself, the colours... And it's too long.
It's like a TBL intro except 6 years later. Still thumbs-up for the swashbuckling effort, ofcourse.

I feel that the intro is somewhat spoiled by excessive use of lightning and especially that blur. It turns into a blurry mixture of effects. Underneah this blur, is probably the best looking scenes ever.
Without it, it would have been the best intro ever, i guess. Love the music. But ofcourse, this achievement is still awesome.

...the screenshot is a bit sucky, but it's the best i managed; it's really hard to get something that is not just blur with some overlay :)

phoenix: win98 is the problem, the speech apparently uses the builtin windows speech synth, which is only there with win2k and later. :)
Best intro ever. I liked the overlay and lag effects, they fit perfectly in the scene and helped to bring over the mood.

I don't actually have anything to complain about (except for the longish end scroller and it's not that bad). I like the blur, the colors, the design. For me this is way better than FR has ever done, much more interesting.

That zoom/blur transition is the most fugly thing in quite a while, but nothing a neat robot can't make up for. Good product.
actually, the speech was what impressed me most. but using windows for that? till now, at least the major intros tried to limit "cheating" of this kind to a minimum. well, maybe this intro redefines the rules. i would not like that.

Hey, if Windows fonts are fair game, the speech synth probably is too. Whatever comes standard with Windows.. just would've been nice if win98 had it too. :)

Great code! As many others have pointed out, there are times when I really would like to SEE a scene, instead of it just bluring off, or pixeliing or swinging away the camera.

I don't know if that's possible but imo the voice of the msAgent would have sounded better with a slower diction. The engine and scenes are damn good, I see no need to show the wireframes which makes a cut with the design of the scenes.

The usual overload of effects and transitions from AND, but what the hell. Clearly it rulez. The walking mech gets a standing ovation.
There were good entries in the intros, but man this rocked. The typical pipescene is usually damn boring, but yeah, this was excellent work.
It's all been said. The quality of the speech synth was what amazed me the most in this intro.. I guess I don't have to wonder about that one anymore (I'm afraid that this will start a new trend) :-P

nice. Just give a designer to AND and they will make something very good. To fast camera moves for me, some not good-looking colors, but code is perfect.

the speechsynth isnt standard in windows 2k, there has been lots of discussion around swedish sceners about using this synth.. but due to the xp only thing noone has been using it.

I do not like the music, I do not really like the style (far too much blurs, fast moving cameras and whatnot), but then. I am impressed. The code seems genious (also without the synth), and I like the models aswell. Especially the robot looks really cool.

What comes to the speech synth used in the intro, the people dissing it should also have an equally negative attitude towards equally external things like the sound/video drivers and the underlying operating system plus all the mechanics provided by it. These are all ready-made products by external vendors, after all.
Also, you'd think that this intro was not 64k either. After installing a system that you can run it on, the total size on disk usually totals to a few hundred megabytes (talking about 'default' installations). But... didn't all the productions running on the same machine have these same preconditions? Yes of course. It's only a question of how you use (or leave unused) what you have available!
After all, if you think about it, using a large ready-made graphics API (D3D/OpenGL) is actually a lot worse in comparison. Everyone does that, and with a reason. The only difference is that the usage of gfx APIs is accepted, while the use of the in-built speech synth of Windows has not even been considered publicly in that manner, prior to this production. Of course, the scale of things being considered varies along with the things you can do with them, but is there really a difference?
That said, speaking less analytically, I experienced this as the definately best single demoscene production of the modern era, leaving many great productions weeping behind (not unlike many of the criticizers of this intro). I haven't yet seen this on a CRT, but I saw it where it really mattered the most. After a couple of days, I'm still absolutely thrilled. Naturally, I had high expectations but this one exceeded them by far. The drivers doesnt contain software that generates scenes or plays speechsynth.. Now take in account that theese dll's are not standard, most people have them since they are often installed with some other ms programs, but still.. this is not the way to go.. maybe in a couple of years when it has been standard in windows for a while and 2k is gone (about 98 i couldnt care less:).

agree with stefan here for once (who'd have though it? :). using a 3d api and the graphics drivers is the most direct route to the 3d hardware on current machines. there's simply no way you could do it differently in a win32 application. so there's really no point arguing about THAT issue, because it is absolutely not related to the "using external content" problem :)

yes, stefan really has a point there. About fonts vs speech synth: I guess everyone can draw a set of characters, or even generating them shouldn't be a problem with the tools some of us already have at hand. And most default windows fonts have been default since win95...

i wonder what coder hasn't thought of using MS Speech API for an intro/demo :-)
I got mixed feelings about this one. Almost everything has been said, overuse of blurring effects, using external speech(at least AND shouldn't give himself credits for it). And am I the only one who thinks it sounds lame? We had a speech util for DOS 7-8 years ago and that sounded the same, no development ever since that.
Didn't like the music, but I guess that's my problem :)
What I DID like are the lighting and shadows, and big respect for the walking robot, that is awesome.

actually, I just rewatched it on my home machine and was rather disappointed... the sound doesn't have enough 'oomph' in it, there's waaaay to much blur, wireframe/zoom transitions are damn ugly and the speech is so helplessly synthetic it made me laugh instead of be amazed or something...
it's a typical partycrowd-burner intro... watch it on a huge screen and loud strereo and you're hooked, watch it at home and all the flaws suddenly come leaping at you from inside the monitor...

I was totally blown away seeing this at asm. I haven't seen it since, and maybe if I do I'll find some flaws and stuff to complain about... but it doesn't matter. Being impressed like that, looking around in the party hall, watching dropping jaws all around you... people screaming and applauding.. it's what demos are about... or at least should be.
About the speech debate... sure, I was disappointed... but still, I respect the guy for having the guts to do something he must have realized would be controversial.. as we can see here, there have been thoughts about it before and it took an intro using it to bring the discussion to the surface.

Whitout this entry the Assembly '03 64k intro competition would have been a great disappointment but I was waiting for another killer intro by AND after the last year winner. Some scenes were way too blurry and the music should have been better for a real killer intro but still it saved my saturday at Assembly 2003.

Watching and hearing this on the party stream was jaw dropping for sure, so I can only imagine what happened at the party place. I so much wanted to see this on my own computer and I was particularly stunned by the quality of the voice synth.
Imagine my disappointment when I learnt that the speech synth was actually the one built in windows. I was further let down seeing how much cpu/gpu power this needs. And even more seeing the blurriness hide half the intro.
Nevertheless, zoom3 does induce much adrenaline, the end result works just fine, the robot rocks and the overall quality of the 64k intro compo at asm03 was relatively low, so, it definately earns a thumb up. But I can't help feeling a bitter taste about it.

I was quite impressed to hear he used the built-in speech synth. As far as i'm concerned, if it's included in an average setup of a recent version of the OS, use it. It is enabled in win2k default install (at least since service pack2 - i have a default setup next to me and checked). I'd say the 2 most recent versions of windows should be acceptable (we're aiming to make good-looking demos here, not legacy apps!)
There was similar controversy when people started to use 3d cards, and make demos that wouldn't run under dos, and even that needed extra fast-mem on amiga. It'll settle down soon enough, and we will have 64kb intros with speech and better effects cause extra space is available :)

but the low frame rate makes the visual quality suffer a lot.

The blur amount is framerate dependant, so less framerate means more blur. Try on a fast cpu with a radeon 9800 pro or similar.

Looks better than a lot of >64k demos, which shows how far 64k demos have come in such a short amount of time. The same can be said about AND's 4k entry, which also packed a lot into a really small space. In fact, I liked the music in the 4k demo better than this. As for the speech, even if it uses the Windows API, I think the execution is flawed, since it doesn't sound all that cool... I liked the voice implementation in Farbrausch's Candytron much better, and fit the style of the demo, too, which I think is more important than just doing something for the sake of doing it. Overall, though, this thing is really impressive, even when you have high expectations going in.

Outstanding. But the blur is too much. the reason i dont thumb it up is that, thru the whole thing i felt this should be a demo with a proper and more kicking soundtrack. Its not that the tune itself is bad, but the sound quality and lack of depth totally kills the whole experience for me.

fiver2: The texture-generator that was used is ATG. Or at least the textures are compatible. (Depacked the exe, was able to load it with ATG 2.0)

A very nice intro, even if it doesn't respect the goal of a demo. Making the maximum with the minimum. A Geforce4 TI 4600 or better is strongely recommended...for this, Farbrausch has my full respect. ;)

The robot rocks, the marching cubes effect rocks, the lighting rocks. (It also seems quite fluid on a GF3, contrary to what others have said, but I might just be less picky about the framerate. :-) )

I don't get it, why everyone is whining about the speech synth? At least for me, it wasn't the thing that amazed me the most. IMO the most impressive thing was the modelling...

Using a 3D API is the only way of using 3d hardware in a usermode application. There's absolutely no chance to do it any differently. As said, the issue is (if any) more related to the question of whether using Windows' standard fonts is ok or not :)

Personally I couldn't care less how many pre-installed resources are (ab)used, since that's one of the fun parts of these types of intros. Oh well.

I think saying "must use no external data" is an easy way to disqualify things like system fonts and MIDI sounds. (But then there's the question of enforcement...)
But bear in mind, I thumbed this down because of the blur effect. It really frustrated my poor eyeballs...

The built-in speech-sys sucks, doesn't even go near the level for e.g. the one in Planet Potion, so why argue? You ruin your own production by using it.

vanilla it sucks, but some tweaking and filtering can do a lot. being a scam artist is a quality for coders who want to do 64k's.

A_Lee_N: Windows 2000? Speech SDK not installed? Then the intro should trigger the auto install routine as soon as the COM object is requested, so no miracle ;)
kb: that's what i thought too.. but i tried running the intro without installing the files it asked for but the speech worked anyway. So it's still a mystery for me.

make a v1.03 where we can turn of option for the speech, which ruines the feeling in the intro

strange, with a fast gfx card it looks way better! it looked alright on the 9100 radeon card (in low res...) but with my new card the blur and effects work much better. Probably this one will get better with time!

Obviously that is not true, but this kind of graphical realism has yet to be beaten in 64k.

The softsynth features some relatively complex non-sawtooth tone colors, and the tune is really a matter of taste. And, from what I know, 3D-models that resemble real-life objects are a lot harder to compress to a few lines of code than nice abstract forms.
When I heard "Microsoft Sam" introducing the intro, I thought "hey, that's a funny idea", instead of "how lame, now everyone is going to do it" or even "cheater", which is apparently not the case.
I think the walking animation of the robot is especially amazing. It sure must have been a lot of work to make it appear so smooth in 64k.

The zoom blur transition is not exactly the most beautiful thing out there, nor is the pixelized green wireframe, but the sheer amount of stuff included, as well as the animated robot, make this a sure winner!

Well....... it will make your head spin with average of 6 fps on a FX 5700, AMD XP2400+. And its not even a LE. I obviously will not lower the resolution without FSAA.
Not the best computer, but will play most games without lag. ie. 15 frames per second. My eyes can't see any problem with 12 fps anyway........ Its quite good, but it lags. Recommended for FX5900 XT and UP.

What's so unique about a blurry look? When overused, blur is ugly, and this one is no different. However, eventhough this intro it not really my thing, calling it a bad intro would not do it justice, so here comes the thumb...

Visual, effects and models are quite stunning for it’s size. Thumb up! But for my taste the camera movements are really too fast and together with all the blurring it was hard to really “enjoy” the scenes. Soundtrack?! …well… I just watched Micropolis and read kb’s comment … and this nice kind of irony made me smiling …

Overrated but great
Lots of content in 64k, good synth, great modelling, and an awesome technical achievement overall. But also: too much Kasparov, too much blur, cheesy slogans; and while it was a good idea, the Windows speech synth is quite annoying. Left a bad aftertaste.

it was great on the big screen but now it's just boring. and annoying. mostly boring.
Basically kasparov in 64k and on steroids. Still one of the big 64k milestones, so thumbs up.
Repeats itself too much and the pixellation-effect (or whatever to call it) really bugs me. Still a good achievement technically, nice models and the speech trick is very clever, though it sounds dull.
