awesome to the death. need a huge mothership to make it run, but eh, can't have everything for nothing, or almost if I consider the size of this thing!! ;)

I need to buy a card with pixel shaders, and that really soon! Everything was red but it was still possible to play it and to get some kind of idea how it would be in real colors. After seeing that screenshot I would like those pixel shaders right away!

i guess i have to hurry up so see my comment on first page, since this will easily beat porrasturvat! =)

demoscene was always about kicking the game indutry's ass and showing them that we are always many steps ahead, and its nice to see farbrausch doing that!

it's like kicking a dead whale across the beach when it comes to framerate and playability, but it certainly looks sweet.
rulez added on the 2004-04-16 01:00:33 by Shifter Shifter
when you have very low framerates, it's a bug. it's not supposed to run fast everywhere, but even with a gf4ti4200 you should always be over 12fps, and with a radeon9600 or better it should be well playable.

Right if you think fR could have reached any limit to its death...they just come up with an even _bigger_ WoW effect to kick you right into your face!!!

For some reason, not only did it run slow, and the intro looked color-distorted... but I couldn't aim and fire, or kill anything. I pumped shots into two bugs for a while (including the time it took before the gun decided to fire) and nothing happpened. Except my screen went black and refused to come back, and they were still chopping off hp

My friends at a game magazine were sent this by a producer at Electronic Arts the day after the BP files were released. The fact that it's a game sure does attract a new audience doesn't it? Anyway, stunning work. I wish to subscribe to your mailing list.

Amazing stuff, ran smooth at least on this machine except the bit with the long corridor with the waves of bugs in - that bit seems to crawl until i shoot a certain alien, then speeds up - a bug maybe? Also, its possible to walk into a new room, then out again before the door shuts, leaving you locked out. I'm sure it will be fixed in the final ;)

Can't say i found it too dark myself, and i've got a tft with the standard brightness / gamma settings etc. Game play should be good with a little tweaking i think... eg, the bigger aliens should shoot a bit more than they do ;) Oh yeah, the bump-mapping ruuuulez =D

i coded some quake 1 mods and did maps back in the time when it was hip (you can still find some old shit in cdrom.com mirror archives), and so i feel professional enough to say, that this seriously lacks gameplay, its basically "yes, this is some kind of a rudimentary physics engine, and you can only somewhat move around and shoot stuff, BUT LOOK AT THE SIZE AND OUR BUMP/SHADOW EFFECTS", so i'd say this is again a preejaculative release. just calling it beta doesn't make it better (i prefer no release over an incomplete one)

the sounds are awesome. i know what the synth consists of, and getting these kind of sounds out of the v2 is lot of rewarding hard work and optimization, i told you already, wayfinder, that they remind me of those awesome fx reznor made for q1. also the soundtrack in the background has a very nice mood. however all of the sounds being mono and having basically the same volume kills the ambience somewhat.

now for the part i really miss: this game doesn't have a networking mode. walking through a linear dungeon is so 1990. you'd have made yourself immortal with a networking option, but as already mentioned, this release seems preejaculative.

the monsters are great. gizmo, you've told me already that they look only half as good when viewed on day light, but their animations give them incredible personality. e.g. this helldog is just fucking creepy, his walking animation is unbelieveable (try strafing around it, see how it bends the head and slides over the floor), almost all the monsters are a bit spider-themed and insectoid, i just love that.

as a conclusion i'd really have liked to participiate in that project, game coding and designing wise, however i know you just dont trust me enough to let me do that ;)

and well, farbrausch has never had a strong love affair with perfection. if its well enough for #1, its good. i criticize that, tho, hell, i'm even in that group.

game entspacken, gamerszene knacken.

most annoying production ever. every second friend had to tell me about some ubelievable compressed 3dshooter *rolleyes*
there are many great intros (considering the "how much can be done in 64kb") and nearly nobody knows them. then one game and after 3 days everyone becomes fascinated about what can be done in 96kb.
i shouldn't care about it but somehow it makes me a bit sad and angry.
shoking the gamer-community itself deserves a thumb but even the rest (excluding gameplay) makes it awesome.

The ratio between the amount of comments and pages talking about kkrieger and the size of the executable is very high. It greatly promotes the scene, even if it's kinda sad it is because of a game. But that's what the usual computer crowds seem to want.

ESDF is located exactly at the same position on QWERTY and FROGY keyboards.

BB Image Of course I can, but since I lost too many photoshop projects/steps due to a wrong keyboard setting and an unlucky shortcut ( and my habit to not read the popup windows I've already seen hundreds of time :p ). Ctrl-Z on French keyboard becomes Ctrl-W on Qwerty ones .

Apart from the high system requirements, it simply rulez. Don't bother asking for better AI, the AI as it is, is fine :-)

Btw, wouldn't look better if they used volumetric shadows instead of shadowmapping? Shadowmapping makes the whole thing look too blocky.

Also is it just me or there is character animation in there? I noticed the spiders trying to climb in solids and their feet turn around...

sheesh, just stick a gun in front of your intro scenes and you get noticed. check the news items on www.tomshardware.com.. this thing is apparently making the rounds.. not to mention it got slashdotted.

so anyone want to turn fr-025 into a fps? :)
rulez added on the 2004-04-19 20:04:04 by phoenix phoenix
phoenix: at least tomshardware wrote a bit more correctly about .kkrieger than about the gathering, but there you go... anyway - great game, albeit a little stiff on the hardware demands. :)

test config : GeForce4200ti-128(leadtek)+P4at1.8G+1GbRam
low fps, from 20 to about 8 in the column room
intro was played in negative, selection menu have strange colors too
all the shadows are strange, they are plain black (like a hole)
i prefer green medikits than red, red is color of bad, green is color of good :)
oreo launcher is funny but unuseable and ridiculous ,)
sound of hurt is not serious ;)
impossible to kill the spiders until they detect me and start to move
i finished blocked in front of a door (opened but invisible wall) after column room, with a new weapon available here, so esc pressed
very few Kbs for a good prod (on fast computer i means), it remembers me when Bomb! created the Amiga revolutionnary game Fear

Excellent stuff despite the very bad framerate which makes it unplayable, waiting for some heavy optimizations in the final version. I love the weapons models and the rooms. The intro is a bit strange, maybe a FX5200 bug ?

titanstar: you haven't seen the word "beta" in the title of this prod, don't you ?
added on the 2004-07-04 23:24:13 by p01 p01
poi: well, so? Why release it then?

This is not a good game, it crawls on about any system (1-4fps on my radeon9800pro + 3ghz P4 + 1GB RAM) and theres *NO* gameplay.

And 96k aint that small anyways.

arneweisse: Does the phrase "just for fun", and "technology demo" rings a bell in the upper part of yourself ?
added on the 2004-07-04 23:44:41 by p01 p01
"just for fun" - don't think so.
"technology demo" - you find 1-4fps on a machine like mine is a good technology demo?
added on the 2004-07-04 23:46:11 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
patch your computer, I've got a similar ( if not better ) framerate with my 2yo XP1800+ and GF4ti4200
added on the 2004-07-05 00:26:00 by p01 p01
poi: well, it was released into the game compo at breakpoint, and placed in the game category at pouet, and therefore should be judged as a game, not as <unfinished technology preview beta - anything you don't like will be fixed, so don't complain>. When there's a final version with enough game data to make the game enjoyable for more than 10 minutes, i will consider a thumbs up. However, seeing that it has been almost 3 months since breakpoint already, i wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the finished version.
added on the 2004-07-05 03:57:54 by titanstar titanstar
i waited longer than 3 months to get a card that would eventually play this decently.

its iffy, but playable on a 1.2Ghz/512MB/AIW9600XT(128MB)
OK, it's beta and it's a demo. But far too slow and mouse mouvements badly made make this game tiring after the first time. Some interesting atmosphere, but it doesn't save the game from my point of view.

Odly enough, on my configuration the intro part was with screwed up colors.
Wayfinder, your track rulez =)
Some of the best scene graphics in only 96kb. Awesome models, graphics, lighting, ps effects... Only downsides: the mono sound effects for the actions, and the average playability. Otherwise, this thing is some serious shnitzel.

what about any new release? you don't have to wait forever to release a final, just release a beta2 or something. just show how much progress you've done since the first beta.

anyway, the beta version runs at 30-50 fps on my box which is quite ok.

i just hope the gameplay is better ;)

Unbeliveable achivement! Technically this blew my head... you 'almost' made a Q1 in 96 k with way more better visuals and animation. Not better music as Quake I had music made by Trent Raznor ;) But your music is nice though! If you guys find someone who can create great stories, then I wouldn't be surprised to find out you've created a fully featured FPS game in 4 megabytes :D some day!

Oh, it works on Linux via Wine without a problem. I just had something like 30 FPS but steadlily. Lol you even have LOD there... fu*k me! This is impossible!! :D

Amazing game! Just to have some perspective of hardware evolution, I'm running this at 250-300 FPS on my GTX 660! LOL!

It's been 10 years and today was the first time I played this. :) Ran into a trapped-in-door glitch, and was a bit bummed by the hallway simulator gameplay, but as a tech demo from 2004, it's really neat.

Had to revive this dead thread, because I just watched Nostalgia Nerd's video on this game, who said that he reached out to these guys about helping them finish their final rendition, and this concept needs to be utilized in today's entertainment media.
This style of development would significantly improve the video gaming and computer graphics industries.
I sincerely hope that these genius developers go on to continue revolutionizing video game development.
