This is our summer demo presented with love.

the hand-held camera thing is very cool. I also like chameleon more than the two prevs, I think it's because the less details and more flat/solid textures. Great prod!

I guess there will be some people complaining about the similarities to Metamorphosis and Midnight Run (and the use of some assets from Rupture)...but I couldn't care less. Its a great demo! Good design, addictive music, nice atmosphere and flow. Keep em coming...

Puryx, you can actually do something about the voice if you run the demo a couple of times ;)

On a sidenote, if someone with a good voice (unlike mine) feels like giving a shot at singing this, the lyrics are in the file_id.diz =)

I didn't like Metamorphosis or Midnight Run, but this left me in awe!

There are so many things that worked well here...the colours are slick, the textured backgrounds are very effective and the integration of 3d gives it more variation and depth. The camera movements are really cool too. Just very polished and professional!

The only thing I didn't like was the music. Instrumentally it's a good track and I'm normally a big fan of aMusic, but there's something about sceners singing in demos that feels cheap.

Navis: I have always thought you got a strong inspiration from the various James Bond opening sequences (Thunderball, Casino Royal...) but this one finished to convince me in case I needed it, especially the "with love from ASD" message during the compo ;)

Nice work as usual, although very close to overrecycling too much this time ;)

It's good on its own, but given the previous ASD releases I felt it was too much rehashing. Therefore, piggy.

Should run almost on every machine and for some reason it dosen't. There's no effects, old art style that we have seen from previous releases from ASD.
I wish more cool effects from ASD and not just realtime music videos. ; (

it certainly put a smile on my face right after waking up, and big kudos for that. but seriously this whole "copy paste from old products" is kinda getting boring. sure each time we observe some fresh new kick to it, but in the end 90% of the stuff is just recycled.

I did like the background graphics way more than foreground silhouettes. I just don't get the train/bike/boat/helicopter/etc theme at all. Real life objects seem to take away my concentration from all the abstract stuff which is a shame. The soundtrack was really awesome and that alone makes this one of my favorite ASD prod.

Being an ASD fan and by thinking at what was previously released, I was waiting for something "bigger".
I cannot says its a bad demo, but i feel a little disappointed.
In this demo category (2D black&white scrolling objects), I really prefer the other ones (Midnight Run & Metamorphosis).
And the "music" doesnt help also.

Apologies for the filesize. This is due to the fact that the archive contains two soundtracks and the vcredist package. Also regarding the music vocals I was not kidding. If anyone has a decent voice and feels like singing this, please do contact me.

The soundtrack is definitely what makes this great. The visuals are also quite good, but I think I would've been a bit bored after a while with mediocre music. Luckily, the music is awesome :)
rulez added on the 2009-08-02 15:08:19 by eladamri eladamri
Holy crap, the soundtrack is irritating. Who thought that making the vocals sound like they were recorded in a bathtub, with the microphone 3 meters away, was a good idea? Also, autotune might be the pest of pop music, but using it in moderation can do wonders for people with a less than stellar singing voice. :)

I like the visuals, the 2d/3d switches and the hints & throwbacks to past ASD demos, but can't help thinking that the theme (parallax scrolling silhouettes, curly "ASD ribbons") is a bit played out by now.

It's still a rather good demo (+1 for supporting small(er) parties like Evoke), but not really thumb-up material either.

very very cool, my favourite asd demo in this style, a very refined product, subtly appealing visuals with a very smooth flow, i think the music is very good, love that style, just the vocals dont do it justice, but i think you already know that, will be wtaching this one again soon :)
rulez added on the 2009-08-02 18:08:14 by keito keito
Design approaching perfection.. kudos for being brave enough to include a full set of lyrics, grammatically correct and not cheesy, broken scene poetry. :) The male/female voice selection seems to be random to me. I would just say, add some compression and/or reverb, and yeah, maybe a little autotune, hehe (but nothing near the level of modern crappy pop music). The filtering does give it a good "old record" feel.

not very clever way how to use models from previous demo, sorry, but this is predictable, during the show I wait when copter show on the screen...I think you melt too much recycled ideas from your previous demos...

As a big fan of Amusic music scores, I must admit this is not my cup of tea, music sounds uninspired and voices are unfortunatelly bad joke.

Ok, this was my first party, now I see things differently : demos looks and sounds very different on the big screen !

aMUSIC : try to add some massive amount of reverberation to the vocals, at the party, I thought it was a very robotic voice and I liked it that way :)

Btw, my laptop has a ati firegl v3200 mobility 128MB (kind of a radeon x600 mobility) and crashes after changing resolution. On my main computer running vista x64, it runs smoothly, it just lacks the "loading" screen (it disappears just after changing resolution)

I like this demo, but it didn't leave me amazed in any way. It is polished, the music is good, the lyrics are good, and it has a nice artsy feel over it which leaves it open to interpretation.

The downsides for me is the re-packaging of events and models from Rupture in a new setting. While I do not disapprove of this method of working in art as such, it still feels a little cheap. I mean, I love the whole universe that you are spinning across your releases, but I would be much happier if it had grown a little more in this one instead of the high re-iteration of old characters/themes.

However, all that babble aside, I still think it is very worthy of my thumb. I would probably be happier about it if it didn't feel like a re-interpretation of Rupture.

Is there a lot of room left for optimization? It doesn't really run *stellar* on my demobox from last year.
It's great. ASD rules the silhouette space.

So I'm back home after visiting Evoke, which I thoroughly enjoyed visited and meeting with all you guys. Great party! Congratulations to the organizers, it all ran very smoothly.

A few words about our demo Chameleon:

Chameleon has two layers of interprentation. On the surface it is an almost 2-dimensional demo with little amount of effects and show-off of technical expertise. As such it will disappoint viewers who don't have taste for such things.

On the second level, and it was my original intention to have one, otherwise the demo would be completely devoid of any merit, is where it shows its capacity:

Chameleon is about things that are not quite what they look like. Everything in the demo is unbalanced *some* of the time, then shown to be more in control only to go back to being disordered - much like a chameleon changing colors: Sizes are shown completely out of proportion for a combination of several objects but not for others; "camera shake" movement is constanly on for *some* objects, enhancing the out-of-balance effect; song follows a jazzy, almost irregular rhythm only to fall back to a more stable pattern, then change again; and change again when you run the demo another time; objects are scaled to 3D and shown from both sides, like a mirror - check music/lyrics and visuals for the 10 seconds after the train exits the flute.

At a later stage in the demo, the semiotics of chameleon's absurdity are more apparent: the organic, curvy, sexy brass instruments breathe out razors and razorwire; the speedboats travel on the water-like surface of the stiff, iron trombone; the machine-gun shoots the helicopter over a most serene, blood-like sunset *without* making a sound. There are more refences which I won't give away and will be spotted by people who enjoy watching ambiguous demos that carry multiple connotations. For me this demo is amongst my favourites we've done in ASD, and I applaud Amusic, Amoivikos, Aasemoon and Liska for their work on music and lyrics.

In this context, a discussion about "recycling" is rather insignificant. I can talk about recycling and whether it is necessarily an evil thing, in technical and aesthetical terms. In technical terms, I recycled some models and maybe 50 lines of code (excluding setup code) from Rupture, saved myself about 3 hours of extra work :-), not a big deal is it.
In aesthetical terms, I borrowed from the original style of metamorphosis and midnight run. This, ofcourse, happens in art all the time, from the ancient Greeks following their set styles in architecture to Bauhaus. Bach composed a myriad of fugues, all in the same baroque style with the same rules of counterpoint (which, by the way, he kind of developed *himself*. Think about that next time you watch a "not-at-all-recycled" demo with tunnels and cubes of cubes).

Bottom line, I believe that what matters is the conveyed message rather than technicalities. Don't lose the forest for the trees and hopefully enjoy the demo for what it is, a poem beyond shaders and wings3d objects made by amateur modeller (me).

I love this type of demos. Great music too (gotan project, bajofondo alike) but the singing could have been better/left out. Great use of colors too in the backgrounds. I just would have liked to see a bit more color (like in the screenshot for example). Also, the references to bikes and boats could probably have been replaced with something fitting the style/demo more. The flow is amazing, as always.

I hope you are going to continue making this type of demos.

Thanks for delivering the layers of interpretation that made me feel like a total dork because I didn't see any of the unbalanced stuff you were talking about... Luckily it seems that even narrowminded people like me who focus on seeing and feeling rather than thinking are able to like this! Congrats for a really beautiful production!

z5, Bajofondo has been a huge inspiration for this track. If you have the version with the old-radio-sounding female vocals then you can grab a non-radio, better mixed and autotuned version here: http://www.theplanetriskshow.com/dump/aMUSiC%20ft%20Liska%20-%20Chameleon.mp3 or simply re-download the demo.

i feel like you reached what you tried to in the demo before (metamorphosis+midnightrun).
Seems this demo is your point of view about the world you described.

i do not agree with your world but i love this style and i'm sure the next ones too . thanks guys

Great stuff, really enjoyed it. Only major criticism: the vocals sounded like they were recorded from the built-in mic of a cheap laptop.

Oh, just read amusic's post above.. improved tune fixes it :D

Music is boring. Also the vocals are not good in the mix: too far in the back.
Maybe that's a good thing because the singer made a few (timing) mistakes.

The rest of the demo is *yawn* too

Fanboy alert:
What ASD does with a few recycled effects, ideas and references is impressive. Not as mind-blowing as iconoclast or lifeforce… it's more a post-hypnoglow version of Eon.

Btw. Nice tune, even without the guitars and my beloved prog-influences (read as: bring the guitar back!)

ok so i downloaded the "new" version and the "chorus" ("come too close / then run away") is still earshatteringly out of tune, and the bathroom reverb preset doesnt help.

it's really a damn shame because what i SAW was appealing, even if a bit self-repeating.

It's really amazing that people tend to have great expectations from great groups - which is normal - and then when they don't like a prod they just diss it - that is amazing. It's like when Visualice started to make demos for FB and it wasn't like The Popular Demo.

Face it, if this demo was made by <insert 4-star group here> you would all thumb up and consider a real competitor towards the 5-class groups.

My opinion - and I've read your post, Navis - is it feels too much like recycled stuff, even if only a insignificant part is reused. It's not coherence of style, it's using the same comfortable places that you're getting used to, and that would be fine if the hidden message wouldn't translate in a look-a-like demo like rupture or midnight run.

Personally, I find the music WAAAAY under the level we're used from Amusic - whom I have an ENOURMOUS respect and admiration - so all in all a good demo with nice visuals which is fun to watch with low volume :)

btw, we watched during the compo in the stream, which sucked ass - damn you dtv!! - and it got better once we downloaded the binaries. the shadow party was great :)
rulez added on the 2009-08-04 04:15:42 by jeenio jeenio
navis: thumbs up for explaining your thoughts and thumbs down for comparing it to art. however, i do agree with you that the message of the demo is more important than wheter or not the code is reused or demonstrating state of the art code.

even though it feels a bit tame after all the previous fireworks from asd, it still manages to be a quality product in the demo ocean

macaw: ofcourse it is art, only I didn't say whether it is good quality or bad quality art (at a subjective level, at least). Very many demoscene productions would fall under the definition of art, I really don't see why, for example, pottery or cinema should be considered art and not this.

I don't see demos as art, as they tend not to convey a message in traditional sence. However, it creates a symbiose together with the audio part. I'd call it design. (beware, this is subjective).

Pros:

Fantastic music theme and vocal filtering

Cons:
Is your 3D artist on vacations? :-P
For that specific music style, the vocals needed more "color". I know its not easy, just saying.

art is what artist say is art. But we are not entitled to like everything labeled art.

i was listening to bajofondo a lot when midnight run was released and that soundtrack became one of my alltime favourites. the subpar vocals make it a bit harder to love this one, too but i still would really like to hear a complete album by amusic in this style.
for the visuals there are so many fantastic little ideas again and beautifully presented - together with the music and all those perspective tricks it reminded me more of those old pink panther intros than james bond.
and i think navis has a point with pottery.

Ofcourse this is art, and good art aswell!

I really like the "hand held" camera, it gives another dimension to it. And discussing if its wrong or right to recycle objects from previous demos doesn't give me nothing. Since the objects are used in a completly different context here from the previous demos I don't think it's a problem what so ever.
I would really like to live inside Navis head while he designs his demos. So many brilliant design ideas and always backing it up with a meaning.

Okay, in case there was some misunderstanding about things: the reason people liked Metamorphosis was because it was a daring departure from the good old reheated DX9.0c 3D player experience. Beating that concept to death so it becomes another dead horse to beat all over again is not cool.

Among its siblings (Metamorphosis & Midnight Run), this is the one I like most. It's got that "what will happen next?" feeling that holds my attention till the end, music is good, lyrics too. Even though (to be honest) I can't really relate the images to Navis' "explanation" of them. Is he serious, when he raves like that? :) Not to take anything away from Chameleon's worth, I like it better and watched it more than, say, Frameranger...

Visually this is amazing (I want to make babies with that font), the singing is awful indeed as written before but the effect was interesting, reminded me of some experimental house I heard recently. However the "story" which I found very strong in previous ASD demos is completely absent here, or at least I didn't get it - and devoid of soul, this doesn't appeal nearly as much to me
