Damn, this looks sweet. My only gripe with this production is that the small fish next to the whale looked kinda stupid, the illusion worked well until you did a close shot of them. Also the deer had some stiff legs, but other than that i can only thumb this up. Awesome work guys.

Keen =) a tad slow on my gffx5600 but surely a lot faster than your fingers so gently on my skin (omg, this almost sounds obscene).. It's 64k.. so no nitpicks from me.. hope you're having a great time at euskal

I don't doubt that this rocked the party place. It has some really impressive 3D (for a 64k) and the rudimentary animation is put to good effect (rhino ears & breathing, butterfly) but the music and camera are both benign and emotionless. Still, great effort, and a single frame of the silhouetted horse scene is worth a thumbs up. Bring the final!

now please oh please put a tobogganing pinguin in the iceberg scene ;)

A for effort, I guess. Lots of scenes, some nice models (I really liked the rhinos).
But somehow it didn't really work out, I think. The music didn't really fit, and putting a cheap glow-effect over everything didn't enhance the experience either imho.
The whole thing was also very slow.

Looking forward to the next intro.

wow, the kitsch factor was way up on this one - butterflies, horses, flowers, and even 100 extra bambi bonus points!

that aside, this is really very good. extra props for non-cheesy trees and grass.

visuals are impressive. colors are great, models and camera work are really good, too and some textures are also very nice. the whole thing has one weak spot, though. and for me that's the soundtrack. it simply sounds to synthetic and doesn't fit the mood of the scenes.
apart from that it's definately the best 64k of 2004 so far. let's see if the assembly releases can top this...
rulez added on the 2004-07-25 16:25:58 by fiver fiver
I don't really like the soundtrack, and the grass is too wavy :)

Cool foggy forest, though. Made the intro for me.

rulez added on the 2004-07-26 01:34:59 by Optimus Optimus
Kitsch award of the year to this one, especially for the horse. The bambi made me wonder wether this was a promo for "deer hunter 2004 - kill'em all".

I liked the iceberg and the flower very much, but I think some scenes should have been left out (bambi, wale, rhinos ..). If you cant make things look good, dont do them. Of course, the music sucked and the intro was missing continuity.
rulez added on the 2004-07-26 01:59:13 by Stelthzje Stelthzje
There will be linux pinguins in the final release? Noooo, why have I thumbed this up already..

intro_init()!

no memory?
no music?
no GL_ARB_multitexture?
no GL_ARB_vertex_program?
no GL_ARB_fragment_program?
no GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias?
no GL_EXT_texture3d?
no GL_SGIS_generate mipmap?

------------------------------
I take it my graphics card can't handle this?
added on the 2004-07-26 07:46:51 by crusader crusader
crusader: i'd give that a no.

The intro... well, it definately rules, the scenes are mostly great, although there are some bad points (like the lumpy coral things in the first scene... pick better angles if you're using cardboard cutouts :) Also, does the deer have some kind of disability?? The horse + rhino scenes were great tho!

Music sounded good, but maybe a bit too cheap-synth sounding.

Overall, its looking very very good, but i'll need to watch a few more times to really judge it. I'll look forward to the final!
rulez added on the 2004-07-26 12:25:50 by psonice psonice
crusader: the minimum gfx card requirements are Geforce FX / Radeon 9500/9600. I have also found that if you have your desktop set to 16bpp and lunch the intro in window mode it won't work, but I don't know if that's your case...
added on the 2004-07-26 13:04:09 by utopian utopian
Very good work overall. However,

It reminds me of :
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9020

Bird of paradise by KStorm. The grass, animals.. the only thing missing is that hilarious sex scene.

Of course the quality of graphics in this intro, is exceptional. Very, very slow though... The scene with the trees at the end, and the credits, were the highlights of the show.

rulez added on the 2004-07-26 15:22:28 by pK pK
Great visuals. There is no doubt that there are a lot of models and textures in here for 64k. The performance is generally ok, but some scenes become extremely slow, as soon as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering is activated.
Not much to say about music and design. Both are ok.
added on the 2004-07-26 15:52:22 by mjz mjz
Impressive code (although slow like there's no tomorrow on my P4 3.0 + GF FX5600), and some great modelling for 64Kb... but the intro is in GREAT need of decent cameras, and some motion not to be boring... I'll save my thumb for when I watch it on something fast (r9800 or something like that).

woooow !!!! this is indeed a very very beautiful intro. While watching I really forgot that it's below 64kb ... strange !!! And the optic is so smooth. Real atmosphere, foggy, shiny aso ... Impressive ... (although it didn't run smooth on my FX5900, Athlon XP2400) ... anyway ... simply fantastic !!!
rulez added on the 2004-07-26 20:11:20 by slippy slippy
again an intro where you can grab beautiful screenshots from... too bad it doesn't really look *that* good on screen.

points for being the most boring intro since assembly 2001 and for using conspiracy's synth (which sounds really bad) and music (which sucks, face it)...

where's the effects, where's the climax, where's the progression :-P

IT'S BORING!

usually I don't bother to comment like this even if something is overhyped :) just my 2 (euro)cents..

hey! i didn't thumb it down so...!

Hmm. I like the models, but the animation is a bit icky. The water could look better. The jellyfish is cool. Remember that 6/7 or 7/8 of an iceberg is always underwater...

The camera movements are mostly rather good, but the designers don't seem to know when to switch a scene, missed some really good opportunities. Music sounds rather crappy and softsynthish.

In general the intro is rather boring and lacks a good structure, but I have to appreciate the amount of stuff there. The end credits could be much shorter.
added on the 2004-07-27 00:13:45 by DiamonDie DiamonDie
Easily can be the the best intro in 2004. The visuals are so wonderfull. But that music is hurts like hell. :/ I just turn off my amplifier and enjoy the show without it.
rulez added on the 2004-07-27 09:20:03 by AbcuG! AbcuG!
It's WAY too slow, somewhat buggy and kinda uneventful. The music could also use a few truckloads of variation and melody..

But on the other hand this is so damn pretty. Especially the whale and twilight forest scenes. And there's no b-grade poetry! What the hell, you can have my thumb :)

technically it's good 64k standard i would say. no super-impressive effect or something like that
BUT:
this model generator is teh r0xx0r!!! the scenes are beautiful, very vivid and perfectly set to generate a certain mood

oops, my mistake.. I wasn't meaning that... obviously rgba's intro rocked the party and our 4k intro isn't at the same level, I know it, but as always you are despising the work of the other people. (I'm not talking about our work)

rulez added on the 2004-07-29 23:33:27 by elend elend
Hmm watched the video and I must say that it is absolutely beautiful. It is a shame the music isn't so good and it also doesn't even fit the visuals in my opinion. Maybe the final version will fix it and this is a good nominee for the best intro of 2004.
rulez added on the 2004-07-30 09:26:45 by dairos dairos
This one reminds me a lot of the recent plastic demo. It's equallly ambitious, yet flawed in the same manner. The 'bambi' scene was awkwardly animated, the static 'horse scene' is as subtle as a sledge hammer. Texturing was great, music was ok for me, the jellyfish scene was sweet, best trees in a 64k also.

If you can reduce the level of dullness and kitsch in a final version, it would be indeed the best intro of 2004 so far. :)

Ok - first of all - I fell very good that someone is also using opengl 1.5 and also takes this whole "my card is not enough" shit on their chests. So already a thumb up from me. But it's definitely too slow for what I see. For What the hell are You using so much CPU? The visuals could be better. I know that there was no time but You could release it on Assembly with less visual bugs. The only scene I like is a Rhino Scene. Rest of them looks a little too empty. The small fish (in the whale scene) algorithms are lame. You could Use some boid simulation. But All in all there some much work. And of course Catmull subdivs rulez!

but the gfx are quite good, esp. for a 64k, so a piggy.

-So-So music
-Pretty good scenes in 64k
-Neat mouth-watering textures
-One of the better caustic effects
-Some pretty funny animations (read: bambi =) )
-Some great modelling in 64k (Rhinos and whale ruled)
-Pretty good trees and grass, better than most alpha stenciled garbage out there found in scene prods =P

Damn impressive overall content, with some great looking scenes. Its going to be hard topping this one now =)

I uploaded a still-party version of the intro, but:

- a bit faster (from 16 to 30 fps in some scenes!). And well, faster on ATI, Nvidia users still will not be able to see it properly.
- 2 kb smaller, so know 54.5 kb :)

Next week we'll star the final version. Thx you all for your feedback.
added on the 2004-08-06 14:37:42 by iq iq
just watched that newer version, and it is indeed faster. Didn't notice any parts that were obviously slow, and i'm on nvidia hardware.

A few things to consider tho: the animation on the rhino breathing suffers the same problem as the bambi, with the robot motion. Instead of that 'move it at fixed speed, then stop for a bit' cycle, how about using a sin wave to regulate the motion? That should look natural enough with little extra work.

Oh yes, and an extra thumb up for including an ass on the rhino ;D

You know, before starting a scene, download 20-30 pictures. So many beatifull thing to try to redo throu formulas. I would really like to be able to made all of them.... some day.

This was amazing at the partyplace, probably the most special moment at ep12. Those rhinos were breathtaking!
Looking forward to see the final version though, since there's some "uh, deadline is near" feeling in some parts. This can be perfect with some more time put into it.
Great work guys, this is really something to be proud of!

but its still giving me 4fps on a couple scenes (bambi and rhino) .. and the synth clicks/stutters abit now and again... such a shame that this aint polished up to work properly on standard machines..
added on the 2006-09-25 06:50:58 by psenough psenough
For the graphics; it runs perfectly on any 2-3 years old machine. Check you driver settings (anisotropic filtering x16, supersampling x8,...)

For the sound, it's just Conspiracy's synth, and that works slow but fine as it has been used in all their prods.

by the way, ps. Today I tested Paradise in a computer with a Radeon 9800 and I got 8 fps... I discovered the AGP speed was to "off". I chagned it to 8x, and I got my usual 30 fps in this old gfx card. Please, check your AGP settings in Catalylst Control Center -> SMARTGART -> AGP setting -> Set AGP speed.

Next time don't complain about other's code before double checking your system works properly :)
