This production uses a new graphic mode - called Mode2.
The Mode2 offers you more than one shade of green.
It is of course no interlace.
In Mode2 the characters are mirrored and wider.
It is quite easy to create the Mode2:
When the contents of a line no longer fit on the screen,
the raster beam appears to draw from right to left, even when rewinding.
It is faster when drawing backwards, which is why it gives a dark green.
Therefore, the characters are also wider.

I tested the Mode2 on 2 Commodore 8296 and a Commodore 8032 and there were no problems.
But use the Mode2 at your own risk!

I love it when someone manages to squeeze a new graphics mode out of an old machine, particularly one as venerable as the PET. Impressive demo. Great work! :)

@bodo^rab can you elaborate more how you convince the computer to show data when the raster beam is going back

and I wonder in which a horizontal line part those data should be put:

Always cool to see new tricks discovered for these ole platforms

@Blast: I have made an interesting contribution, which is the discovery that in addition to drawing characters to the screen as the electron beam sweeps across the left to right, it's also possible to draw text characters during horizontal retrace (the time interval during which the electron beam is returning to the left edge of the screen to begin the next scanline.)
Because the beam is moving much faster during horizontal retrace, the characters drawn during this interval are faint (less time is spent energizing the phosphor) and stretched to be wider (the beam travels further for each "dot" in the char bitmap.) And of course, the characters are also mirrored, since the beam is moving in the reverse direction.
The 3 shades of green are created by energizing the phosphor only when the beam is moving forward (normal brightness), energizing the phosphor only when the beam is moving backwards (dim) or energizing the phosphor as the beam passes over it from both directions (extra bright).

@Blast!: To expand a bit on bodo's answer, yes, it's probably 'b' (the back porch part of the horizontal blanking interval) where this happens, or at least the better part of it.

Apparently, the CRTC variants where this works do not enforce output of black around the HSYNC signal, and still emit pixel data with appropriate register settings.

The monitor seems fine with that (looking for HSYNC only), and happily outputs these pixels during horizontal flyback.
