Looked good on the stream, but amazing in realtime (my god it's good to have a demo-capable PC again). Loved the music, sfx and sync. Graphics also awesome. Scenes conveyed a real sense of scale. Would love to see some of them in a VR environment.

cool, as alx is now doing design and pixi the coding I can relaxed lean back in my retirement chair and say: great work guys! ;)
Best Still demo since and after Passing? This was inspired by Interstellar, right? First of all nice soundtrack, particularly the first minute and a half, but beyond that it felt like it was trying to abide to the direction too much making its progression feel unnatural. The explosion/collision motif also beyond the first occurrence felt a bit jarring and contrived, because it completely halted the nice progression the demo managed to build up until each one. The demo-format is too short imo to have everything reset in one minute intervals, so I was basically left expecting something at least twice as long because the demo felt like just an intro to something even greater. A lot of great moments inbetween though, very pretty and all that jazz, loved the texture on the orange-brown rock thingy in the first half. I would've hoped perhaps a bit more attention to the backgrounds, but then again it might have caused too much clutter. One more nitpick I have is once again those polygon particles which I just can't get excited of, but I don't think those have ever been this good before.

very nice. just when it would become boring and uninteresting (around the middle of the demo), here comes the pixtur's color palette of blue and purple, and instantly everything is okay again. :)) water canyon scene is just awesome.

yeah, hmm... flying explosion triangles, I loathe them. The last part is exceptional, but falls way short of a masterpiece (see last few still demos) due to short runtime and some disconnection between scenes.

Enjoyable, almost like a short film the way the soundtrack and visuals and synced. I wanted something else for the end, but as a whole it's good. Though, a bit of "I've seen all this so many times and I'm so sick of it already".
First part was like "okay" but second part is awesome and sound effects and sync makes it really trippy.
I wish it was longer and had more "synched chaos" but love it anyway, kudos!

"... is not a valid Win32 application." error on my very old, updated Windows XP Pro SP3 box. It wasn't bad on YouTube.
snob because I dont like triangle explosions? come on, its easy to see that a) they look cheap, especially when they are long and nasty b) break the 3d illusion - you had a solid sphere and now oops we make it explode and guess what, it was a shell after all, empty of matter c) dont get me started on how it looks when you add additive blending on top of that mess. It works some times, very rarely, but not this way.
AntDude: I have no idea how you expect any reasonably modern PC demo to work on XP (and likely 10+ year old hardware to match). Not to mention the security hazard that an unsupported OS implies. It's time to move on. :)

I didn't enjoy it - most likely because of the fact it kind of lacks any significant pace at all. However, lots of work must have gone into the design, which I always appreciate - hence a piggy.

It has some 828 vibes although it's far from being that gloomy. And it's not as perfect.
The aesthetics and direct remind me more of motion graphics videos than traditional PC demos, even more than with the previous Still demos. So kudos for breaking new(ish) ground in the demoscene. Additionally, the execution is definitely more than solid for what it is.

I like that this is not typical 08/15 demo material and instead explores "new" territory (well, new for the scene at least, which is a bit sad). Plus, the sound is fantastic! And nice sync, although the concept of the demo lends itself well to that.
But the garish colors in the first third and the horrible triangles (as others mentioned before) drag this down a lot for me.

I watched it again after your comment. And well... this is the first demo in ages that gives me a proper kind of a synesthetic feeling of sound linked with visual. I don't really care the technical aspects, or even have the ability to judge any more what is technically good or not. It just takes me to worlds and places and I get butterflies in my stomach. A lot of what it does is kind of unexpected, the different scenes are connected in a way that somehow makes sense for me, especially in the end. That's what demos are about for me. Or were, once.
It gave me the feeling like I had when I was a kid when I saw cool things for the first time, or that I still get sometimes when I discover a truly great band, or read a particularly stunning poem, or stand on the beach looking towards the distant ocean.
I haven't written many lines of code as a hobby for over a year or so, but this made me want to do it again. And oh yeah, the thumb.

tomkh: in my book a demo doesn't need to be technically groundbreaking to work well. in this case the wow factor comes from the tight sync of the visual and sound design. yes, it's not new in the world, but it's fresh in the demoscene, atleast to me, and quite a few others it seems, it felt refreshing. if you think this is something you could easily done with any demotool, by all means please make a demo about it, i'd love to see something like this done even better.
OK, this is an absolute beauty most of the time. Too bad the massively self-intersecting, coder-colored triangle-soup that appears at 0:33 kind of ruins the fun for me. The rest of the demo is so awesome, it's quite sad that it needs to make up for that my-first-opengl-experiment. It does manage that, though. But it makes the total way less awesome than the rest of the demo deserves.

@psenough: It definitely opens up a discussion and is a hint for other demomakers to maybe actually put even more effort into design, tooling, compositing etc... AFAIK usual demotools (I'm not that much of a fan, but I've seen some 64k, werk-zueg etc..) have very basic event synchronization, curve editing, etc... so yeah - we can do better here! And this is a good example.

Just a technical question:
what tool are you using (if using one)? is it a version of the tool from Fr where you have more freedom to do your own effects etc? is any hardcore lowlevel programming happening here? and is it the same for all still demos (like beta and intrinsic gravity that are very different?)

ah also, when all is said and done...
what is interesting and really great about this piece is that it shows what happens when a top quality designer gets his hands on (good quality and well-made) "standard demo" equipment and spends a load of time, care and effort with it: they make it awesome.

funny thing that, when the time comes you'll see many similarities between Coronoid and our new demo - and this must be down to pure chance (as it has almost been finished already). Still not sure about the music - maybe it is a good idea to shift to more sound fx based, who knows.. time will tell.

And to be more precise: I kind of trying to follow @Navis and @smash over here (when they did all the code+most design, and maybe added some music on top), of course not as good results (yet), but it kinds of bothers me that they start to lose faith in "one man show" ;)

@Navis: sure, it's me, thanks. I just realized proper credits was not added to it (already sent a request to pouet). I didn't do much on a demoscene since then - usual reasons, life, job etc... except recently playing with 3d fractal surfaces (it's not working in real-time, yet ;))
nice explosions and stuff but it doesnt feel to getting anywhere.. point a -> point b you know, last part was nice and the blueish one: kind of 2001 space odyssey feeling to it.

@pixtur: thanks! Its partly fault of my profile on pouet, it should be updated just now. I still hold my views, but I totally agree that only talking is cheap, so not so proud about myself here;) I cannot promise much, but I hope to do some new real-time stuff as well. Either way - great work with the ttool, it is a true inspiration. I was doing few 2d/3d/even text editors myself (as a hobby), so I know how much work it takes to get something that others can use and actually want to use.

So I was digging a little in the demo assets, and unfortunately I have found out that even two main "effects" - floating noisy blob and the terrain (that everybody is drolling so much about) near the end are all modelled using external tools (like 3dsmax or Maya), not even "ttool".
I did this render straight out of Maya using .FBX attached:
I mean seriously... that's just two objects you have there that could be easily generated with a code and you model it like total lamers (sorry, but that's exactly what it is in a demoscene terms) and then some respected folks over here call it "the best demo since 10 years". No words. I'm very disappointed by the state of the demoscene nowadays.

^ Oh noes, someone used something pre-generated and didn't use 4kb size-coding methods in their 50+ MB demo, what an outrage. ;) If those meshes were ripped and wrongly credited, then you might have a point. But this is just trolling and/or ignorance.

@tomkh: Sure, preferences are one thing, and completely valid. I myself have several, some of which are really out of the line with the general consensus within the scene. I didn't care about your opinions earlier, but it does seriously piss me off when the bottom line of your criticism seems to be not the prod itself, but the tools or workflow that were used. I think it's a ridiculous standard to apply that some implementations or design choices must be done a certain way or otherwise the demo isn't good. Not that I'm interested in continuing this discussion, but you really don't think the end justifies the means (within reasonable boundaries) when it come to demomaking?
@noby: I can agree that means justifies the end if your goal is purely aesthetical effect. And it's true that it is a kind of ethos for people like me (probably not even all coders) to generate "stuff" out of a code (possibly animate with a code as well) - and it is more impressive for me if somebody is doing similar stuff with an interesting artistic results and good real-time performance. So for me what counts is more like a good balance between artistic beauty and the code behind it when it comes to demos, and yes, it is subjective. Moreover, if I want to enjoy things in pure aesthetical sense I usually watch fully pre-calculated movies - and actually it would be nice to have good quality abstract content as movies as well i.e. the computer generated part in Tron Legacy is a good example, way nicer than this "thing" to me, although it would be nice to have more things like that, as a movie or real-time, but as you said - truly without imposing any restrictions.
tomkh: no one is forcing you to watch this demo in loop mode. you could channel your envy in more productive ways than posting on pouet. just saying.

This demo is nice, good enough, I just found it shocking that people are calling it "one of the best"... and to be honest that demotivates me to do any work on a demoscene. Maybe that's why I'm defending my statement so eagerly.
you don't have to do something like this to make a good demo. diversity is a good thing. i would suggest to just do your own thing. if you put your heart and effort into whatever kind of demoscene production you enjoy doing people will acknowledge it regardless if it's more focused on tech code or design.
can't please everyone, best thing you can do is please yourself. it's a lot more fun aswell.

It's all fine, you did a good job, nice to have a release and so on... but generating close to random noisy mesh using even "perfect tools for it" (that say let's you do it just few clicks plus some kind of soft-modifier to drag "spikes") is not impressive for me. Why? Precisely because it's easy/cheap. And this content is cheap - even in pure artistic terms. Now, if this mesh would be generated in real-time and say animate/morph in real-time - it would do.

tomkh: the terrain in this demo is not just some perlin/fractal noise with a modifier. It looks to be more complex. Loading the fbx is also complex (probably). There is a lot of complexity in there from both artist and programmer.
I would also cheat this way (as most people must do)- model it in wings or blender (as I've done a million times before), or use a function, depending on my mood and time constraints.

@navis: It looks like fbm+modifier to me, additional "mesh complexity" may come from simplification that was applied afterwards, so they didn't have to implement lod for just this one shot.

tomkh: I personally think that this scene in the demo is very well executed. It feels that all pixels are in the right place, and it needs nothing more; no more complexity, no clever coding to do things in realtime (or in loading time). Just like many paintings, they don't try to replicate the world like a photograph would but instead expose a different facet of reality, some times using just the most basic of tools - a single pencil stroke on a white canvas, see Picasso etc.
This type of work is more important for the demoscene, again imho, than trying to recreate an impossibly complex scene out of a computer game or a film.

@navis: agreed, painting is not a reality, from Van Eyck, Botticelli, Caravaggio to Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt, Chagall and so on... form vs content, all supported with a great mastery and technique! I actually really like what you are doing - for example: a schematic tree in front of red city-skyline with fluid-like particles in "Lifeforce" is a genuine code-driven demo art to me - a great combination of form, technique and expression. And this sunrise on ice "wooh wooh" scene is some mediocre attempt to capture Interstellar+Riddick kind of "epic" bullshit-emotion-squeezers, easily resonating with infantile-mindset, no wonder so greatly applauded.

@pixtur: thanks, it was also merely an overreaction to pop-culture bs in a recent blockbusters I've watched and the general state of "cg art", nothing personal. When I see explosions and hear "wooh" sounds everywhere it really acts on my nerves, sorry. As for revision I won't be there, but I am definitely up to participate and hopefully contribute something to "Deadline".
I said it before and I'll say it again, this demo is AMAZING. If you focus on a terrain and treat it like it's a random "press a button and use a few easy as 1-2-3 tricks", well you then miss the point. First of all it is a DEMO, so it is real-time. It has artistic value in many ways; soundtrack, real-time, sequences, scenario, timing, animations. It has a lot going for it. A lot of it could have been a fail in experience value, and there I think the stats show that it's a win (so far). Point being, it is a good demo.

wow this demo is something different! The way the sound and feeling is linked to the effects, like it puts you in a different world.. great synchronization with the effects.
tomkh: Drawing the line somewhere is crucial to get the demos delivered on time. We're talking about productions that are made whenever people get a free second over their rather busy evenings. These are not commercial prods with a blockbuster budget that a random connoiseur decided to sponsor! It would make sense to apply your metric over the latter, but doing so for the former is off the wall.

@kbi: I understand, but I just find it more exciting if a piece of geometry is described in a concise way, i.e. procedural generation algorithm + small set of control parameters, unless there is a clear need to have every vertex/detail sculpted by hand.

Simply suberb! Massive cinematic feeling. Perfect unison with the audio and the visuals. Sense of something "bigger" that you can't quite grasp. Lots of tiny details and polish you might not notice on the 1st watch. Get shivers every time watching this.

Mesmerizing visuals, great connecting theme, ace sound effects. I like how the "music" is not really music this time, shifting the focus all the more to the visuals which really deliver. Great transitions and effects, and ends just when it needs to end.

I did notice minor sync inconsistencies early on, and I'm most puzzled that it runs "smooth" on 1x's GF 450. I mean I'm on a 560, which has twice the pixel fill rate, and it gets into the 10-15 fps territory by the end of the "sphere surrounded by pink triangles" scene and never recovers from there when using 1920x1200 with 4x AA. If I dial that down to 1280x800 and no AA I recover ~10 extra fps, but that's it. My graphics drivers are from August 2015. What exactly am I missing?
