Insanely superb.
Made me feel like if the 80's were still alive and way way cooler than what they were indeed.

graphics are a bit crappy, even for 48k zx spectrum but code and music wise this is good. also funky soundtrack. :)

Wow, some great code in there. First gouraud cube I see on spectrum that is not with chunky 4*4 maybe. And some good vector stuff.

I have mixed feelings about it. But stunning code and killer soundtrack pull this demo off.
Actually, i guess, there was no any reason (except blind ambitions) in 48k self-limitation. This demo can be done a bit (way) better in 128k.
Then again, lack of design and pace (due to eternal loadings), and, on the other hand, effects that were never seen before. So, still thumb up. Mostly, for soundtrack, gouraud and last road scene.
rulez added on the 2015-03-15 20:34:17 by sq sq
@sq: I have a clear reason to produce programs for 48K. The Spectrum 48 was the only machine that has been cloned and mass produced in Brazil by Microdigital (TK90X and TK95 models). I still own my TK90X since 1986 and I love to see new prods running on it. I have another reason to have almost no interest in 128K demos. I also own an Amiga and when I have an urge to see better demos, I prefer this hardware.

@sq, fixed (the bug was as follows: reset in DOS in TR-DOS 5.04TM made nonzero 23728..23729). Thanks for the report!
OK, so we have a demo, coded by the best coder on the platform, who decided to pay some attention to the design aspects of his work. Now, it is easy to criticize some of the choices made here; the demo is often not so good-looking, the fixation with the 48K is understandable, but hard to relate to for many people, and the ending is way too abrupt.

With all this being said, this demo does have a narrative structure, cleverly uses sync to emphasize its key points and has few effects to die for. This thing may well be the most demoish demo Alone Coder ever made.
rulez added on the 2015-03-16 15:23:55 by introspec introspec
I completely agree with introspec! Most demoish demo coded by Alone Coder. I like those realtime effects, beautiful gfx by Trixs, and altrough some boring parts, overall feeling is very good. It was a fair fight in one category with us. I looking forward for next year, guys. ;)

i really dont know what kind of bullshit is that
"there was no any reason (except blind ambitions) in 48k self-limitation. This demo can be done a bit (way) better in 128k".

i dont know what is a reason (except blind ambitions) in Amiga500 self-limitation. demos can be done a bit (way) better in Amiga1200.

i dont know what is a reason (except blind ambitions) in C64 self-limitation. demos can be done a bit (way) better in C128.

and overall i dont know what is a reason (except blind ambitions) in 8bit and 16 computers self-limitation. Demos can be done a bit (way) better in modern PC/windows.

you are sad.

Effect-wise for me this demo was the real wnnder! I'm going to build an AY interface to watch that demo. :)
rulez added on the 2015-03-17 10:20:00 by Exin Exin
Well, I just realized this is for 48k and people arguing about it, but that's even more impressive. I can't wait to actually run this on my rubberkey micro :P

And maybe I should get that AY interface too.

Pacing was good, there's definitely some cool design elements and I loved how fast and smooth that gouraud shaded cube was. Whatever object it was that came after it looked fucking horrible and unfinished, but there's probably some stuff going on there that I don't quite understand (:

Очень технически сложное демо.
Впечатляет! Спасибо!
rulez added on the 2015-03-18 09:22:04 by VBI VBI
Simply brilliant. Technically perfect - and it has a necessary flow, it has its unity. It is not an ordinary boring 48K megademo (aka a "collection of disparate effects"). (To be annoying: it would be better to make it for 128K.)

Really good demo guys! The 3D rendering engine ran at an amazing speed for a Z80 considering its running the music, the code and the display all at the same time.

Damn what a hardware squeezer. Also stable rastereffects, which AFAIK is a pain in the ass to do on ZX spectrum, and most likely even more painful when dealing with 48k of memory.

Sure, graphically it might be not the best, but damn is it coderporn at its finest.

nice!
rulez added on the 2015-03-23 13:03:53 by Frequent Frequent
@TomoAlien, there is only one true raster effect, in the end (btw it seems to work on +3, too - I tested it lately). But the car, scroll and balls are more or less raster synchronized because of one screen buffer :)
good work!

The sources as always. The archive is a copy of the shared folder, it contains all the assembly and data files, the storyboard (it slightly changed over time) and some directories for 3rd party tools to compile and link with batch scripts. Developer chat that was there is not included.

What you need to compile and run this:
- install Fuse emulator
- put mhmt.exe and bit2tap.exe in parts/tools
- put sjasmplus.exe in parts/sjasm
Just wondering - why Alone yell "stolen" effects?

Impressive effects, and thumbs up for sharing the code. But I didn't enjoy it as a demo.
I find loading for a few minutes just to show a few seconds of effects really obnoxious and tiresome. And the parts where you have to wait and wait, and you just see a picture (albeit a nice one), feels like a slap in the face.
rulez added on the 2016-01-05 16:55:01 by Nuclear Nuclear
> I find loading for a few minutes just to show a few seconds of effects
WHAT???

At the party, demo was shown from DivIDE, which traps tape loader routines and pumps data from flash card. More, being DivIDE-friendly is a long tradition and requirement of Forever parties and every ZX demo there uses DivIDE with (almost) instant loadings. It have long been a standard in this world.

So just turn on similar thing in your emulator -- or install DivIDE in your rubber speccy.
added on the 2016-01-05 18:28:41 by lvd lvd
This is exactly why Alone Coder is being criticized, lvd. He claims that only 48k demos are authentic, as opposed to 128k demos, but when people complain about prolonged tape loading, you refer them to a piece of twenty first century hardware. Inconsistent.
