i like the first minute of the music (but it gets somehow boring) and dstops visuals but the fluid effect is somehow overused here.

i was always expecting a huge liftoff but then it was suddenly over. plus it leads nowhere (or i don't get it), so this is only a piggy for me.
added on the 2011-04-26 15:12:28 by prost prost
Of course Smash's particle routine is fucking incredible and the liquid physics were very impressive, but as a demo I found it really bland and boring. I've never been a fan of mono colourschemes in demos and found it really repetetive.

I've come to expect a lot more in the way of cutting edge design and artistic touches from Fairlights and CNCD.

Well the effects and production rule for sure. Have to agree a bit with Wade though, something's missing this time. Maybe I need to see it in 3D. Easy thumb up for the codepr0n and soundtrack, though.

Actually worked better in my living room than it did on the screen at the party, IMHO. It's a much more intimate affair than the usual demo grandstanding. Yay for being different.

Numb res is good. Easily the best in the compo and the best demo production of the year so far.

For me what makes it great is not only the graphics or the music but also the timing/ambience. It is 6 minutes. Does it feel more than 3? no. It is unassuming in taking its time to develop at the start. And when you get the fade out in the middle (and audience think that it is over) BAM! more to come.

I like the music very much... I wonder where they will take us next, after Socrates and Mike Oldfield. What's left in your dad's vinyl record collection, maybe some early Genesis? Try "Selling England by the pound" from 1973, it's quite good actually.

The demo does run very, very slow on my machine. And this is the problem I have with this: I bet that you can have 90-95% of the effect by taking many shortcuts. I only say this because I've seen other similar "liquidy" stuff that look 90% as real as this yet they run much faster on the same machine. I may be talking out of my arse now but:

Take Magellan. Cut out all the coder's colours and concentrate on replicating some of the effects from numb res. Would it work? yes, no?

Awesome prod indeed! Thought I'd have to go for a german demoparty to ever see a CNCD/Fairlight-demo live, but miracles do happen! :D

But, does those numbers have any proper meaning? And if not, where do they come from?

Navis, that's a good point - it really doesn't feel like 6 minutes.

Awesome music. Reminds me a Tekkon Kinkreet track from Plaid.
Camera paths could have some extra love, maybe some roll. Maybe the effect has these limitations. Really neat code and effects.

Not as good as your previous efforts but I'm surprised you still managed to pull of something that doesn't feel completely rehashed on this same concept.

The track is once again great and the direction is spot on. But the overall composition of the scenes could've been a bit better.

Beautiful! Wonderful visuals and audio, great presentation. Perhaps the numbers concept feels a bit shallow.

I can not thumb this down, that would be lunacy given the technical aspects and otherwise solid content. But Smash, I sincerely mean this, perhaps refresh your concepts a bit left and right. Your productions/code are worth it.

The music is and it's combination with the mysterious set of numbers is just wonderful! Even though this is the fourth or so fairlight demo using their particle magic, I find it's the first one where effects and atmosphere perfectly fit together.

Also: it gains a lot in the 3D version

My feeling on this is mixed.

Technically, I was wondering when you would come up with fluids with surface and all. Job done. :-) Besides this, the demo has a feeling of same stuff again, but while it looks less massive than Agenda and Ceasefire, it's also more coherent.

I don't understand all the ideas conveyed, but it is still highly enjoyable. Actually if I had not read Navis' comment, I wouldn't have noticed this was more than three minutes long.

And something really nice is how it's screaming "we had fun making it".

At last, I'm always happy to see prods in anaglyph, and this one does it very well. Those one dimensional moves work very well.
rulez added on the 2011-04-26 16:52:34 by Zavie Zavie
the particle stuff you've been showing us these couple of years was superb, but this one is just above that...

also, any chances to see it with 3dvision?
rulez added on the 2011-04-26 16:52:47 by ton ton
The beginning of the music is giving me some strong Akira vibes somehow.

The demo seems to have a strange bug on my system (i7/4890/Win7-64) - the liquid simulations are totally missing - the other gfx (particle stuff, numbers etc.) are present, but not the liquids.
added on the 2011-04-26 17:02:50 by Sdw Sdw
the utter joykiller of downloading this demo and finding out it again runs 5/10fps (just like the last 3 other 'particle'demos from flt ;/ )

I am still amazed how utterly beautiful this production is. I love every single piece of it and keep watching it, stunned with envy. I am not sure if the technical achievement justifies the typical Fairlight arrogance of the nfo-file, though. Honestly, I don't care about the resolution of marching cubes or number of digits in the particle count. For me, it is the perfect symbiosis of music, animation and style the makes it the my favorite demo so far.

For years, I've been afraid it would come from Smash/CNCD. Well, resistance is futile, I guess.

I'd like to contribute to what Pixtur and Navis have already said by adding that what this production really has going for it (in addition to the flawless execution and super-high production value) is tenderness. You actually fall a little in love with it.

From the technical point of view, I'm speechless - especially the second part with marching cubed (or whatever?) fluid flow approximation was astonishing. Please, publish a paper on the technique you've used to make it possible!
On the other hand, I dislike the design. I really loved your former fluid-based prods, but this is just way too much uncorrelated. The first part is totally off the second one. It's coder porn, and since I'm a coder myself, I do admire this with all my heart, but the overall impression is just insufficient for a thumb-up, let alone a cdc.

@Irvin: The artists are pretty well supported by the price money I think ;)
ok watched it a few times now, and it is beautiful, and as usual with recent FLT demos it allows you to fill in the gaps and make your own opinion on what you've seen, which is good, it provokes thought and emotion, the link between music and visuals blends perfectly, they were born to be together, great stuff as usual :)

Fairlight demos are always a bit hit and miss for me.. technically, usually a hit.. technically on my hardware always a complete miss :D But the design is also hit + miss. Sometimes I love it, sometimes it can feel too ad bureau or game trailer.

But this time.. it's like all the attempts to impress got abandoned along the way, and a few nice effects were thrown in to make a demo. Same with the design, it's not got that "we have pro designers" feel like some of the past demos, it just has the design it needs to get the job done.

And that's why it works for me. It's not trying to blow me away with design and code, so I can kick back and enjoy it more. The design and code are there to be appreciated too, less in your face perhaps, but all the more enjoyable for it. It's more mature, and I think it'll be longer lasting. Best flt & friends demo in years.

Now, I'm off to check out the rest of stereo wildlife's music, not heard of them before :)

Seriously tho, I've always loved when FLT/CNCD lay off their trademark pretentiousness (nfo aside :) just because of the sheer beauty of what comes out when they do. I can understand the criticism (and tbh it's a bit empty now and then and doesn't work too well in daylight) but to paraphrase a conversation I had with Reed at Revision: The ability to appreciate demos like this comes with age. Luckily I'm old.

Now where are my Barbie branded 3D glasses when I need them :D

I couldn't run it at 1280x1024 fullscreen due to
"Error creating render target" error. I read its text file that said 768 MB of VRAM is required! Well, damnit. :( I did try windowed mode with 640x480 resolution and it actually ran, but too choppy for my old ATI Radeon 4870 video card with 512 MB of VRAM in an old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine (i7 950 CPU). However, I noticed the demo's options showed 4X antialias greyed out. Why can't I change this? :(

So I had to watch it on YouTube! It looked nice.

Hmmm. This actually falls rather flat, due the "subtitling", why repeat something that we are clearly already hearing? It's about numbers. Why wouldn't you put 72 of something to the screen? This could've told an amazing story, in which it's triumph would've laid. Right now it's just an placeholder for something truly great. Quality is there tho, as usual.

@Visualice. I personally hate demos that try to tell a story. As a famous danish coder and I once talked about, the most shitty short film can "render" in better quality, than even the best demos, why not instead try to embrace the medium and do what it's best for. And I tend to think, that most sceners would agree with me. But if the story is like what is done in Debris (if you agree that Debris has a "story"), it might be a good thing, but I tend to watch demos more that don't include a story.

d3pth: Well I wasn't referring to a story "story", but something that leaves room for one's interpretation, so I suppose Debris could serve as an example here. But while being on the subject, I don't have anything against story-demos, meaning if there would be one that wouldn't seem like something that a 10-year old has written :D

Just watched it in 3d. The 3d effect adds a lot.. but the shitty red/blue glasses take quite a lot away. With a real 3d screen, it would be incredible.

(And some of the scenes near the end make sooo much more sense in 3d btw. The 'slowdown' isn't there for you to admire the fluid, it's to admire the 3d :)

Watched finally this in anaglyphic 3d yesterday. What a ride!

I was actually thinking before (seeing this in 3d) that in some parts the demo was "empty" and "lacking" in places, but I'd say this is only for the benefit with the glasses on - less is more. Excellent soundtrack, as well!

I like the Demo as a whole, but my problem with the particle based fluid dynamics is that the water that comes out of it, does not really look like water after all (might also be because of what comes out of the marching cube algorithm, it will create these pretty round blobs around single particles that are off on their own). I'm quite impressed by the performance of the particle simulation though. Good job. Also the number counting is lost on me ;) Will there be any fairlight demo anytime soon, that can run on a computer that is older than 9 months? :D

This is a true pearl! This time, i don´t even care that i could not see this prod in RT (like almost EVERY FLT prod because of FiretrUCKING hardware hungry code). This prod has finally made me register on Pouet after nearly ten years of lurking (that it took me several more months to actually complete the registration is another story). I watched it on the livestream, I watched it on my home PC, I watched it in a video capture, and it never fails to impress—let alone in stereo mode.

Most of the recent Fairlight output is known for the (ever-amusing) pretentiousness, but this demo is somehow very sincere, touching, even humble in some ways. I didn't like Agenda or Ceasefire too much, but this deserved to win in my opinion. Truly a colossal effort!

Excellent trip! Stunning visuals and beautiful, fitting music; these guys continue to squeeze fresh, astonishing prods out of the same (likewise astonishing) engine.

From a technical aspect (Engine based on vanilla DX9c, no geometry shaders used, etc.) this is an amazing demo.
Didn't like it so much at first glance but it's growing on me.

I hate it, when I try to make any sense of what's going on. It's a brilliant soundtrack, something that makes you want to try and make connections, references or just sense at all. Visually, the simplicity in the appearance really works well, though the tech stuff going on "underneath" is probably nowhere near simple. Great and coherent prod!

I have no words to describe how much I dig this. This is the demo to strive for. The .diz talks about the technical issues involved, but this demo is quite a lot more than the technical backbone for me. This is a demo about loneliness and disconnectedness in the world, and overcoming it in a flood of a cathartic experience.

I appreciate the tech and idea, but I'm not really a fan of this. It's just dull to watch, as pretty as it may be.

I suck cocks but will give it a go later today anyway - see what happens if use 3-4 times the particle radius for grid indexing... I.e same particle in multiple grid positions...

The number station voice creepiness combined with technical excellence makes this really atmospheric. It's makes the fluid simulation show-off in the middle seem almost needless.

Still my all-time-favorite yet today. There really should be personal top 10 list availability too. Not only some algorithm which fails to understand quality where it sees it. Damn!

This will forever be my favorite demo. The soundtrack is beyond beautiful and with the visuals I can always find new thoughts that I can dwell into. Demos are at their best when they have a clear vision that is brought to life.

Holy shit, this could make nervous a cat if it was so exceptionnal. Poor minded hypnosis and confidence. Before talking to me, ask before if it was someone else anywhere. The dead was my cat. She died years, ago.
