Together with last sunflower demos -wonder and tesla-, VIP2 is one of the best 3D accelerated prods made till now. It not only uses your 3D card to play pre-made scenes, but also pushes it to its limits showing more things than boring 3D cam-flying-around stuff. Really nice effects, good transitions and very dynamic.
On the negative side we have the commercial mp3 (Resurrection/Fear Factory) they used as soundtrack and some models which were ripped from Poser.
Hope to see another Popsy team demo soon, with those original ideas we see not too often and they showed us they can do. And -sorry guys :) - with an original sound track.
Despite everything, its doubtless a must-see.

This is a really good demo, one of the best i ever seen.
3D engine work good, 3d scene are nice.
A lot of people say the use of commercial mp3 is bad, but when a mp3 is the good mp3 for a demo, it is better to use it.
Imagine this demo with another mp3, i don't think she will be besser.

ps: i'm not good in english, really not :)

How can anybody complain about the music? Oh come on. This demo was made for that tune... and not the other way around. It´s not far away from beeing brilliant. I especially love the end which looks damn cool. A MUST SEE for every demo-fan!!!
added on the 2001-01-20 12:21:22 by Tyrem Tyrem
This demo has a potencial to make a huge impression on audience. The way it starts, progresses and grades. No matter MP3 is not original (even though IMHO if Popsy team handled THIS they would handle original soundtrack too), the substantial is that it's free and piece of demoscene. It's a real experience, it's really hot shit ;]

added on the 2001-03-14 14:29:41 by _ _
stop complaining about ripped music. the 81% popularity rate at this point can't be lying: it's pure dope.
added on the 2001-03-28 00:40:51 by plek plek
What I want to know: Is it legal to use a commercial mp3 in a production?
I'd guess it is as long as no profit was made; so if it was a compo entry, that would be illegal.
But this was an advertisement, so couldn't money made from the party be considered in this...?
Or is the party not-for-profit? Does it matter either way, since money changed hands...?
It's an _incredible demo_ either way... good graphics, terrific design and coding... (love the smile at the end the best)
added on the 2001-03-30 06:51:35 by tck42 tck42
Dont be so fucking small minded. Even a sub-culture like the PC-demo-scene should be able to tolerate some "Commercial" music if the whole production is made around it. Its beurtiful, its well done, and most important it has a good thought behind it. Don't you see that the whole production is inspired by the song. It circles around it. It should be the visiual AND audial exprience that decides if the demos is great or not no matter if the music is "original" or ripped. These guys have put alot of work into this becuase they obviously got inspired by the song. And the demo is GREAT.. thats all that should matter ....
added on the 2001-04-10 01:22:53 by paoimrg paoimrg
It's as simple as this. 1) The french scene will defend any french production, no matter what. 2) The french scene doesn't care what's original or ripped, just the end product. 3) This is a french site. So, you figure out the 80% popularity rate. :) Trust me, if this weren't a french site or demo, things would be different. And don't forget, people arguing about also make it more popular!

Regarding the legality, well, the scene has never been very righteous about things (it all started from cracktros, remember?). But, we won't be able to include VIP2 (or State of Mind) on our DemoDVD, I'm sure.

Oh and btw, the music is not all that - pretty cheezy if you ask me. :)
added on the 2001-04-11 17:36:22 by phoenix phoenix
well I don't agree with you, pouët.net is made by french people so...
the popularity system is what it is (check the faq) but it's not faked...
the only fake I got in this system was done by german people.

it's true that there are many french prods in this website, but maybe it is because there are many sceners in france too...
the website is in english and it's nowhere mentioned the word <i>french</i> or <i>france</i> so don't use this argument please.

France killed d4 scene =)

well remember, it was just an *INVITATION* and...
i'm really bored by people flaming something instead of doing better...
another funny thing was the critics about poser and so on... well nobody criticized haujobb for doing a such thing (in "strange feelings", but they didn't write it in the .nfo... so you couldn't know... sorry), why nobody criticized nooon, psychic link, and the majority of your fucking gods using 3ds default meshes (remember the duck and the face...???).
i remember that the 3rd ranked entry at raytrace compo at the TO2k was pure poser... but nobody saw it it wasn't written in the .nfo...
nobody criticize calodox using a lot of vids and photos in their (our) demos...
can you tell me WHY???
are you just ass lickers?

why are there so much critics about this INVIT on the net and why it was the most applaused demo at the projection at the mekka 2k+1 (i was present) and game developper conference (some guys of gamesquad were there)???

for the music... well at the beginning we forgot to put the fear factory credit (we also forgot to enable the replay...) we just had the time to re-enable the music before the dead-line...
for the commercial music... could you find a scene musician doing an equivalent thing in 2 month?
ah... i heard that B-state is now on Warp records label...
so what's the difference?

all you can do by praying about your "scene commandments" or flaming everything because it doesn't fit with your conception of "what must be a demo" is what you call "kill the scene".

remember... the scene has never been as alive as now, it's just evolving to something approaching art... it is no more a tech-only affair... may be you're a nerd and for you it is disapointing... so just code your 4k in your corner on your c64 and leave us doing what we want to...

why doing this difference between countries? you should go to the international corner in parties... it would be good for your mind.

ok... just talkin' your language... "F.R.E.E. Y.O.U.R. M.I.N.D."
(sorry it's a rip)

ah... i don't have anything against the groups i mentionned:)

added on the 2001-05-26 00:36:50 by madman madman
what made me getting angry was those guys who don't do anything but flaming everything...
other thing disappointed me was the subject of the critics... i didn't see anywhere an artistic point of view about that thing... just a nerd point of view...
if you want to make art... then change your mind...
look at www.3dartreview.com to see what i mean by an artistic point of view (ok, the guy of this site is gone a bit too far...:)
anyway you can dislike the music... it's not my favourite one;)

a great demo, fantastic visuals, nice music... nothing more to say really.
bottom line is: don't give so much attention to insignificant details like wether the music is ripped or not, if it fits and is good, then they did the right thing to use it because it enhances the overral expirience.

Anyway, to reply to mr. X, I'll say that, well, he doesn't like the music, doesn't like the meshes, so, it's logic, he doesn't like the demo :) Nevermind, take this demo for what it is : just watch is as a video clip. The design of the demo has been made to please US :) It succeeds in this matter, now it can't please to everyone on earth.
For the tree leaf, I don't understand any of your comments. Why is it easy ? Unjustified ? It means nothing if it's not justified (eheh) :)

Anyway, this demo is as it is, and we won't change it by now, so let's focus on a new demo :)

Good design. The subject of originality is so worn I won't even go into that.

There's a lot of demos with ripped content, but this is one of the few that gets away with it for being an overall cool demo.

The 99% popularity might be a little over the top, but this is a kicker nonetheless. The french always had a knack for ruling dzign - good to see it live on.

And as for music, Popsy could've asked men like Stephane Picq (Cryo) or Raphael Gesqa (Delphine) for a little contribution... that would've settled many of the (unnecessary) debates in here :).

to x, i think you're acting pathetic. attacking on personal level should be below any of the comments here on pouet. as said before, it's not very polite to write in german/french/polish/danish/whatever your maiden-language might be when everyone else is writing in english.
Mhmm, I saw it for the first time on a local party on the big screen a few days ago. So, I'm a bit late with my comment here... :)

The music might be ripped, but the overall experience is great. I would say it's THE new school demo. There are not much demos around with a compareable impact.

However, 99% popularity seems not to reflect the opinions correctly. ;)

I don't understand why people only see the MP3 and Poser thingies.
The code is very good, the visuals are great, the models, well, after all, Poser is a modeller program, so why not use it's models? :)
And as for the music... I think even Fear Factory would appreciate this demo, because the synch is great, the atmosphere fits, and it just _feels_ good to watch it.
And it's "just" an invitation :)

Ahh... VIP2... still my Nr. 1 demo of all times, including my active time on the Amiga back in the 80s.

Don't ask me why, but this is one of the very rare EMOTIONAL demos. That's what i call it when you actually FEEL something during watching a demo, especially in that scene with the woman and the man. I also think that the music fits perfectly well to this peace of art.

Btw, this demo returned my interest in scene after more than 10 years. It's great to see that the scene is still alive, although it has to be said that it has completly changed. Anyone of you knowing the "good-old-days" sure knows what i mean. But that's not the topic...

Congratulations to PopsyTeam for this GREAT demo!

First of all: Ripping music sucks.

And this is no "nerd" point of view, that's for the most part that i still have this small fate in the fact that demo sceners are CREATIVE and do things THEMSELVES. Gosh, if you were out for the ultimate artistic experience, you'd used XSI and AfterEffects and released it as DivX. This way, the frame rate would be even higher.

If asking a scene musician if he can do a Fear Factory-alike track in two mmonths results in slightly lesser music quality, that's completely ok. The demo may be only place 5 instad of 3 and may only have 95% popularity instead of 99%, but the fact that it's YOUR demo and not that of SOMEONE ELSE (if Fear Factory's music label ever chose to sue your ass off, they would definitely succeed, as the wonderful tight integration of music and visuals make every "fair use" discussion quite senseless). Fact is, you distibuted a commercial track all over the net (and placed it on many uncommercial and otherwise legal FTP sites) without any consent from the copyright owners. Any i know, Fear Factory will most certainly rather profit from this than lose anything, but you could've at least ASKED. Or give credits. Or anything.

So next time, go to the musician of your choice, get some good guitarists and do it yourself. It will definitely feel better. For you, for the musician, for the scene and for all the bands that you didn't rip off.

The reason why i give a "thumbs up" in spite of this rant is simply that i love this demo.

Honestly, I don't know why this demo has been criticized so much. Big deal, the music is from Fear Factory, but they have never denied that, and they have mentioned it in the proper credits. I don't think a ripper would do that. And how come using Poser is lame? I just don't get that.

I'm not a scener myself but I have studied design, and I think this demo is pretty amazing. Visuals & synch are neat, music fits perfectly, and overall it's a memorable visual experience.

Another thing I just can't understand: how come many people have diminished this demo's qualities because it was made by french people? Isn't that just plain stupid?

Kudos to Popsy Team for creating this excellent demo.

Certain scenes in this really stand out, most notably the
petal scene at the end, which is just inspired. Why? First
of all it goes so well with the music, secondly, its well
synced, thirdly, it takes two
effects, the petal particles and the rain and integrates
them with a 3D scene rather
than just using 3D as a flyby, and fourthly its just
beautifully concieved. A lot
of demos are industrial/techonology themed or abstract and with Fear
Factory on the soundtrack it would have been more obvious
to do that, but they didnt.

Mind you that said, about 3/4 of this demo is also of really
high quality IMHO. Love it.

i heard a lot of music done by sceners who can easily compete against "commercial" work. demoscener musicians *can* compete with a major-signed band, i don't see what's so special with a paper (contract) with your name on it. it doesn't change anything to the quality of the work. they decided to use music from a known group, its their choice. the demo would have been great even with another song (as long as the timing is as good as in this one) please wake p will-b :)

the strengh of this demo is its dynamics...

i wanted to do an entertaining demo (like americans are doing entertaining films), with messages to people i wanted to clearly readable for them only (the letter in Arab in the eye-blinking scene for example).
nearly nobody noticed it instead of the person concerned...

for me in those ways this demo was really well realized.
the code is really good too... u2 did FX officially impossible without pixel shaders...
and particle FX in real time that are precalculated in some really actual games (i think about the rain in metal gear solid 2 on psx2...) but... you were too much thinking about your own rules i'm not recognizing as such...

even if they had used a "rock" song made by a demoscener musician, people would probably still shit on it. every time i hear a song different than the common trance-techno beat, it's usualy kinda good but other people shit on it (well, the same morons who keep whining on everything here) so it's kinda useless to try (ie : the latest virgill's song with vocals on it -- the song rocks but it's not the typical demo-style music).

oh well, maybe someday we'll see more style of music in demos (hiphop, rock, whatever).

i agree with you on this one, will-b: people should create their own music for their demos. however, i stil don't understand this opposition to commercial music; some tracks would simply rock with a demo; it could bring something new to the Scene, who knows...
added on the 2002-03-24 23:20:36 by OdS OdS
Demos have always been a challenge. To code, to draw pixels, to write music, to imagine something nice. The best, the most incredible we can.
I'm not a scene-purist who will flame graphicians who use photoshop or modelers who use 3DS, but I feel that creation is essential in a demoscene production.

The thing i fear the most, is that every scene newcomer that loves this demo (that is great anyway) would directly choose to include a commercial track too, stating that scene music is not good enough or does not fit to their production.

A great demo does not excuse a bad rip.
added on the 2002-03-25 16:51:04 by willbe willbe
i must admit that using "prefab" music, graphics or whatever would surely ruin the quality of the productions. we would prefer quantity to quality, or wouldn't try to understand what the scener wanted to create anymore. this is the opened way to mediocrity. but -i'll try again!- i'm sure that a talented person could deal with commercial or prefab stuff if he's an artistic approach to the thing. but anyway, yes, VIP2 rocks, for sure! :) and after all that's all that matters: having pleasure watching demos. and i DO have pleasure!

Who hasn't been heavily inspired while listening to music, commercial or not?

Making a demo with commercial music isn't (atleast not in my eyes) something wrong from a democoding point of view, just another variation in this complex collection of artforms we call the demoscene.

Using commercial music without permission is illegal and can give quite an unfair advantage in a compo. But it's not all about the legals and the compos, now is it? Creativity doesn't have to abide by any rules.

I can't say I feel like commercial music can compete with our beloved demoscene musicians either.

I'm metal fun (you can call me like that ;-) too, but using commercial music in demos?... It sucks like hell. It's just a rip, or "skaaaan!", as heard from Amiga-fans at Gravity. I'm sorry - although the demo itself is very good (maybe: even one of the best I ever saw), I say: fuck the new style. Fuck ripping and saying it's the new "style" of creativity. Quality? Yes, I like quality music, even commercial quality music. But the smell of demoscene for me is 32K XMs, not xMB ripped .mp3s. Sorry.

This would have to be one of my favorite demos of all time. It just gives you that feeling of something great. The synch, music, graphics etc. are great and work so well. Im sure that we can all over look the ripped music for a invite of this quality. It wouldnt be the same without it :)

The music in this demo has very much to say about the feeling of the music. Okey, so they didn't actualy make the music. DOH! But the demo, I feel is, is better at portraing the emotion of the music then FF actualy are. So a thumb of for that. :)

Let's go on... POSER characters. Yeah, another tool... If we have got it, why don't use it? Yeah, well done.

The result: More than 2 years on the scene...... AND STILL RULES!!! Yeah, if you feel a demo, that demo is GREAT, and I REALLY FELT this demo!!!!

This demos shows being _creative_ by using some (commercial) released type of "art" can result in "art". If the music "industry" would take this as fact, all could profit from that.

great demo!

ripped * sucks: oh come on, demos are to be enjoyed, not to be flamed about. a production is judged by the impact on viewers, not by people who believe in certain rules. while being creative is important, it don't have to manifest in everything being 100% original. these demos are being art, not just for nerds, but for ordinary people too. computer art is yet to go mainstream, and productions like this can draw a lot of attention. on the other hand, badmouthing is already at a more than enough level. forget about ripped whatever, sit back and enjoy this great production...

don't forget to give a look on State of Mind, it's awesome, too...

ps.: yes, i DO love original tunes (too)

Tuo, this was one of the first demos I saw. When I got a new computer that had a decent graphics card, this was the first HW-accelerated demo I ran. At the time, it totally blew me away, and was a true inspiration. This demo holds a special place in my heart as it helped introduce me to the scene. It's also the demo that made me discover pouet.net. Life isn't fair. Rest in peace Tuo.

Good bye assembler and state-of-the-art code, hello creativity and artistic sense...

Remain nevertheless one of the tenth major production of the Scene life along with Second Reality :)))
