As a 680x0 junkie. I'm offended. Now ignore me and proceed with the challenge.

Great stuff!

Funnily, I also "invented" the nocpu tech independently some time ago. See https://infosec.exchange/@harrysintonen/112627238742582618 for writeup. Of course my hack is far from actual "real code", it only does simple game of life and implements simple cycling loops by performing SMC on the copperlist.

How is it possible to write a computer program that doesn't use the CPU?

The demo itself is very well designed and also features good graphics.

Good work, guys!
It's a crazy idea, but maybe it proves that Amiga can run Atari-level demos without using the CPU?
If so, I propose that CPU-free Amiga demos can compete in Atari compos :D (Just kidding, don't get mad at me, Atari fans! xD)

Wonderful to see this making it to the public (and winning too). And even better than the various previews of code, graphics and sound, I've been impressed to witness at Demostue - well done, friends.

One of you guys need to make a video explaining what "pure copper, no cpu" means. As while yes I find it really cool and still would rulez it even if it was a "normal" demo, I don't know exactly what about this makes it more than a normal demo.

On the one hand, it's crazy impressive that all of this is done without the cpu. And it stands on its own legs as a nice package even when you ignore the key selling point here.

On the other hand, I'm not crazy about getting a whole bunch of "the exact same effects you've seen on this platform before, but this time slightly simpler because we imposed some random limitation on ourselves"-productions.

But again, everything on display here is obvious all-thumbs-up material.

Awesome demo, but I have a question, how to run it on the emulator? If I open it from the folder in the workbench, I only get a black screen. I spent the whole day trying to convert LHA to ADF, I only got errors. I tried formatted the floppy disk, copied the files, added an entry to the df0:s/startup-sequence file. When booting from the floppy disk, the logo with the 3.1 appears and everything stops there. All previous demos from the NoCPU challenge were in ADF format and ran without problems on the Amiga 500 512/512 configuration.

What a blast! A1200 surely needed something like this. I still like 68060 (the bully who causes everybody to think that fast mem & C2P is the only way to go), but no CPU is a fresh trend! Super ++ for graphics to Folcka! Awesome!

Like Amiga demomaking isn't already limited enough, you still have to think of new additional limitations - and you decide to do without the CPU...?!
What the heck is wrong with you guys? ;)

I don't understand the tech but seems crazy everything is copper-blitter. And it also runs well on low end AGA and effects and graphics are so cool.

Crazy, sexy, cool - idea! This is the real demoscene spirit! Thank you also for the Runner, I was expecting some kind of a (file)loader but having it published as src is even cooler. So GERP is going to have a really "hard-core" and pioneering compo, worth for waiting for!
rulez added on the 2025-08-25 20:36:08 by sachy sachy
This needs a huge thumbs up. We all knew that the coprocessors are Turing complete, but it takes a huge effort to make anything look remotely interesting. The copper showdown editor and Savior’s Interceptor intro also deserve a lot of respect, but this entry went so much further. I love that it is not a typical tech demo, but a complete demo with great art, music, coherent design and lots of different screens and effects. Wow

Thanks for all your enthusiastic comments! We had a lot of fun making this, and we are thrilled by the hearty reception. 😁

As some of you have noticed, this demo is a triple comeback. For both Slammer, Folcka and Slide, this is the first demo project they have been involved in since 1997 (according to Demozoo).

We are of course excitedly looking forward to whatever no-CPU productions you will be making. As a starting point / inspiration, we have published the full source code for this demo, including all assets. I also wrote a brief description of the overall approach and experiences from the project in the demo announcement issue in the challenge repo.

Quote:

This is a reasonable concern, though to be fair, almost the same could be said about size restrictions. In the early days of 40k and 4k intros, these were indeed just showing simpler versions of seen-before effects. But as the category matured, the limitations led us into new areas of creativity that we wouldn't have visited otherwise. I think the same could happen for the no-CPU limitation.

Which emulator are you running? For the development, I used WinUAE 6.0.0 with cycle-exact chipset and cycle-exact CPU. FS-UAE apparently does not work.

I have been thinking the same thing, actually. 😉 The demo fits on a floppy, so it should just be a matter of putting a startup-sequence. And then designing and printing the label and preparing the disks, of course.
