so fucking awesome and great that there's just not enough words for it

I wonder what would have happened if this would have worked on the Revision compo machine.. Would it have won Revision? i think so!

Great amazing demo! The water and animals scenes especially! Keep on ruling the AGA Amiga's with new productions! Cheers and greetings from Nah-Kolor!

Dang!

During the compo it was shown on a 68060 at 100mhz, and I wonder about the memory requirements, but that was a hell of a show!

A co-production between two of the Amiga "high-end" greats, Flex and Ephidrena! A match made in heaven, and look at this beauty that those two popped out!

Only thing I did not like was the music from time to time.

That felt properly next-gen for effects and design.

anim.mp5 ?

The water uses an rle compressed panorama-video texture shown on a skysphere. Like a 360 video. A seamless loop of about 70 frames coded in Shadertoy. A bit controversial perhaps!
added on the 2025-05-26 19:30:51 by rloaderro rloaderro
The other anim.mp5s are the little videos shown in the credits/intro/end sequences

awesome modelling, great athomosphere and classic flex/eph quality!
also thumbs up for almost 10 megabytes of animated water :D

Really liked it. Design was interesting as if someone wanted to make Greek mythology demo and another person actually making it had no clue of what they should make or intentionally tried to hide the theme while still following instructions just enough to fill requirementsz

Winners don’t use… Well in this case let‘s make an exception. ;-) Nice style and colors.

Beautiful demo . Great job ! Skybox or skysphere is a 3d engine element. Animated textures do not reduce the value of the code. Can I ask what kind of texturing was used on the skysphere with perspective correction or was it enough without correction?

Beautiful & serene. Great atmosphere / touch & soundtrack. Will watch this many more times. <3

yeah I dig it
rulez added on the 2025-05-26 22:52:49 by ferris ferris
@teby : it is just affine mapping.

@p01 : it seems I need 64MB fast to run it. The mem-meter in the demo says 32MB Fast and 700K chip as peak allocations. So almost runnable in 32MB, but not quite. Maybe there are some unused assets that could be deleted to make it run using 32MB RAM.

You don't have to puke just yet. Still very very smooth on a Blizzard 1260@50Mhz, nice!

The shadertoy like wavey sea got me. It was so cool, sure the illusion breaks when I learn it was animation, but warped in skybox or sphere was still cool. I know others have done animations on skyboxes before on Amiga, so I won't mind. Overall the demo is pretty cool.
rulez added on the 2025-05-27 10:21:55 by Optimus Optimus
@loaderror: Thanks :) Writing your own shader and taking a "little" capture for you envmaps is genius! And much better than ripping or lifting that from somewhere. Really good job everyone!

You got everyone (including myself) at the ocean shader.
I don't wanna hear about how it is done, let the magic remain.

flesk! awesome stuff as usual, glad you could finally release it. worthy winner.

Shader effect is obviously precalculated and prerendered, but you don’t need to be shy about it loaderror. It’s a beautiful demo nevertheless!

The water looks incredible, pure beauty! And the movement of the animal trio is very minimalistic yet realistic and spooky, great work on that! Also nice idea with the highlighted coins. Ephidrena + Flex = a great recipe for strong atmosphere.

Love it! So atmospheric and moody

I'm incredibly bothered by the fact, that the three head picture is mirrored compared to the 3D animation of it. Otherwise, absolutely stunning demo.

@serp no AI here. It has to be said we didn't exactly hire a film crew to do those little videos of fishermen either (but our parents paid a lof of tax to have them made sometime in the 80s for sure)

Watched on the vamp, works fine (but doesn't exit gracefully).

I was somewhat annoyed by the jerky texture mapping in places (no/low sub-pixel precision for transformed vertex coordinates?), but otherwise it's usual Flex/Eph quality!
rulez added on the 2025-05-29 16:29:06 by Blueberry Blueberry
Aske: we could hire you in as a consultant on the next one :)

Serp: AI? no, but what made you think that? Generative AI can go suck a fuck.

What Blueberry said. I'm not that big fan of the music tho.

At this point, I'm a bit tired of prods wanting to use skyboxes as an effect. :-) The 3D animals are fairly nice, though.
added on the 2025-05-30 11:44:34 by Sesse Sesse
I'm happy to have some fixed point camp with Blueberry at some future party for sure. Maybe Black Valley? The projected coords have 4 bits of subpixel precision. There is prestepping of tex coords and all that happening. On Sojourn of The Soul the jerky texturemapping was mainly due to having too low precision matrix components (8 or 10 bit rotation vectors?). Now that is bumped up it looks smooth in that demo's texturemapping. I don't know where the jerkiness comes from now. Seems to appear with wide FOV.

The evil easter egg in the mountain skybox has a stable texture dither effect. Each texel contains two color indices A,B and a mixing factor F. The ideal color of the texel is A+(B-A)*F. To approximate this ideal, we select either A or B by dithering determined by a bayer pattern and the mixing ratio. So it's not just another skybox!! :)

Impressive work—this demo is exceptionally well-made. I've always appreciated 060 3D actions, though their output has become less frequent recently. The concept, modeling, texturing, smooth transformations, audio track are all executed at a high level. Thank you for showcasing this
rulez added on the 2025-05-31 07:32:00 by ED ED
@keops : It is the good old "infinite bobs" effect with depth buffer. There's really just 2 chainlink objects in that scene.

This Amiga demo beautifully conveys an important piece of history. The Nordic explorers sailed into uncharted seas, seeking out seals, polar bears, and whales. Riches multiplied, but so did myths and fears. Like a killer whale under the surface, their last journey was always dead ahead.

An epic vision masterfully brought to life by Loaderror, Farfar, and the other greats of Flex and Epidrena. I contributed with my arctic music, pushing my Amiga 4000 to its limits.

I hope this demo becomes as timeless as the story it tells.

A really stylish demo with some fresh takes and above-par quality!
Rumors about it already spread at Revision.

I've been working on a very similar water effect some years ago but never managed to get it into satisfactory frame rates. Glad you found a solution even if it feels a little bit cheated ;)
