People at various forums had big difficulties understanding the tech behind this. :) I don't know if the intro text could have been clearer or more "for dummies". Anyway, thumb up, it would be great to see this on actual hardware, but that stuff is very rare around here, and I guess it was never popular. I don't recall knowing anyone who had 8088+CGA+NTSC composite display.

I was shouting my bewilderment at the screen by the time the "copper" bars came on. And 1000 colours... madness. Hard to tell from the composite video but are your highcolour modes dithered or are you using some other absurd trick?

Music was a little busy at first, but what can you do with 1bit? The jazzy melody later on worked really well though.

KICK ASS prod all. Tops.

Really crazy!

@jmph, yeah having less busy visuals (takes less processing power/time) allowed a different method of sound production for the end scroller.

I haven't seen so much colors before and still think it's CGA. Wow!
And many effects are very good for 8088. The colorful plasma, the rotozoomer and even smooth flat polygon torus! This is the first true 8088 demo!

Hard to believe that it took almost 35 years since the launch of the machine to be able to see what the hardware is capable of!

I hope that this is only the beginning for the 8088 IBM PC...
look forward to see that demo on a real hardware one day... :)

I am curious about how the 1k color would get render... I guess there is some flicker? :)

GREAT DEMO!

The next target could be a 10Mz 80286 with EGA.

...I forgot...as you mentioned: does not work on tandy 1000. some parts where bw other parts flicker and do not work...what a pity that I do not own a real 8088 with CGA...oh I forgot..I have a euro-pc... I will test it with this machine instead, because there will likely be no andy-1000 fix of this one right?

would be nice, if your crew manage to set the ultimate demo for EGA too :)
borderline crazy

Guys, thanks for all the kind words -- it really means a lot to reenigne, VileR, Scali, and myself. We worked on the code for 6 months together, but separately it was roughly 100 man-years of appreciation and deep research into the capabilities of the machine and the video card over the past three decades. You grow up with this stuff and it leaves a deep impression on you.

It was also a deep honor to compete against such very strong entries in the compo, which you can see in the results -- it was practically a 4-way tie! If you haven't checked out the other three, please do so, they're great (although I don't know why Oxyron complained about only one disk... ever heard of compression?)

Technical blogs are forthcoming, but until then, here's some quick answers:

yzi: If you have real 4.77MHz 8088 and RGB, the demo will run but without correct colors, so you can still enjoy it somewhat. The kefrens bars, moire/interference, and end credits parts look nearly identical to composite out.

jmph: No dithering, no pageflipping, real 1024 colors from the display over composite output. VileR's core discovery, refined by reenigne to have double the colors.

introspec: Have already done mega research on ZX Spectrum beeper but you can't use 1-bit multi-chan engines as background music; they take up too much CPU time. Besides, reenigne came up with something much better than ZX Spectrum 1-bit engines, which you can hear in the end credits: It is a 16KHz 4-channel protracker chiptune player. It takes up 99.99% of CPU which is why the end credits are fairly simple.

Baudserver: We plan to update our blogs in the next few days :) I'll link to mine here when it's done.

F-Cycles: No flicker; 1024c mode is stable.

drzeissler: Sorry, make your own :-) 286+EGA is too "powerful" for us.

There may or may not be a final version. There are visual bugs in the party version which you can spot viewing the video multiple times (they're all my fault, actually :-), but we're fairly tired and burnt out, as is to be expected.

+1 oldskool cred. technically impressive.
The beeper music hurt my ears (although I can appreciate the difficulty in putting together anything that resembles music). The rest was really cool, even for someone who doesn't know all the details about the hw capabilities.

rulez added on the 2015-04-07 21:52:13 by speeder speeder
Sound would probably have been more pleasant if it was a "live recording" from a PC case instead of being directly taken from the beeper, as it would no longer sound like pure square waveforms.
Anyway, there's no point in criticizing, this is mega awesome.
rulez added on the 2015-04-07 22:07:11 by Saga Musix Saga Musix
As a former owner of an XT clone I didn't think some of this stuff was even possible on that platform, let alone the significantly less powerful original IBM PC. So awesome to be blown away by a demo like that!

The beeper music was indeed hard to listen to at times, but the musicians involved clearly gave their best considering the limitations.

This is completely insane! You have done the impossible.
Now I just need to figure out if it would run on my own old PC (that I think has slightly newer hardware). I have some graphics adapters I could switch for the CGA/EGA card currently installed, but it ought to work on that card as it can run games that only work with a CGA card (and nothing else).
I shall have to experiment. And kickstart another older computer into which I can install a 5.25" floppy drive...
But it will be worth it if I get the demo to work.

Once again: amazing job! My mind is blown into little pieces.

Well, we're trying to get more people to make oldskool pc demos :-)

While there are a ton of limits for this platform, the most annoying one IMO is lack of a decent sound device. And it's not as simple as "just add an Adlib" because 1. that likely wouldn't qualify for a pure oldskool compo if we did, and 2. Adlib writes are quite slow; updating FM music @ 60Hz can take upwards of half the raster time :-O so that's right out. Simpler devices like the C/MS (game blaster) don't take as much time to control, but those are even harder to find than Adlib/SB.

BTW I'd just like to say it has been an honor getting thumbs from some of my long-term scene heroes in this and other threads. Makes teenage Trixter extremely happy :-D

Oh! Sure, one sec... Ok, check the github repo for SWINGIN1.MON (first tune, Phoenix) and NO_ROADS.MON (second looping tune, virt).

You may be tempted to listen to them in Adlib mode so you can hear all channels properly, however that wasn't how they were composed. virt did that and wrote me this:

Quote:
I just realized I can listen to my own track in Adlib mode too, WOW THAT'S WEEEEEIRD, I actually prefer it monophonic because hearing the notes in a "plain" polyphonic arrangement takes away the rhythmic arp tricks like snare fills, guitar riffs, tremolo strings in the "orchestra" sections, etc.

Man, they should teach monophonic beeper composition in college, this might actually be tied with "Your only sample is a hihat cymbal" compos for most challenging way to make listenable music, haha.

"CGA? Is... is that you?"

Yes, you have carefully set the rotation values to generate ~45 frames of data and wrap, so you can run each object anim 3-6 times before switching. Don't want to make it too obvious now do we.

And after all, it's only for the compo, not for vector lovers, so it only has to last so long.

Animation players are the great platform equalizers, aren't they? Make demoshock to scener brain.

Sorry, animation-presented-as-effect equals thumb down for me.
sucks added on the 2015-04-25 00:08:53 by Photon Photon
Effect wasn't really for vector-lovers, but rather an exercise in how to show large polygons while dealing with the abysmally slow memory speed of CGA.

If animation-presented-as-effect equals thumb down from you, then I guess you thumb down Planet Rocklobster as well? Oh well, I think there were plenty of cool parts in both demos that had nothing to do with animation.

Trixter: Yes, the thumb down was unfair to the other work. You didn't announce that part or the other such parts as data replay exercises, though. And that's fine. It's unfair to call them just exercises after release and write-ups after that work, and strange that you should.

I take it back, we should all do nothing but write generators of single-cased code lumps that play data lumps. After all, nothing else will use the platform fully. But that's not good effects. That's cynical and desperate effects.

So I take it back again. I think there's every reason to never go full cynic, and to promote creative, native effects. On that note: really good Wayne bars!

The changes to the final version are really cool, and awesome to see that last bit of polish put on this amazing prod. Nice job guys!

..BUT, my enjoyment of the VIDEO CAPTURE suffered a bit because the end of the second music track doesn't sync up perfectly to the beginning of the credits track as it did in the party video. That perfect sync & instant transition into the mod player blew me away the first time. Isn't it possible to fix this?

jmph, I'm afraid there is no easy way to fix the audio sync - basically the 1-channel audio is not synchronized at all with the effects (except for the start of the first tune music when the title screen rolls down). We just happened to get lucky with the party capture, but the exact changeover point depends on the exact speed of the floppy drive's spindle and stepper motors. I suppose we could wait for a specific point in the music but we'd have to limit how long to wait in case somebody tries to run it on a machine with a very slow drive and we miss the right spot in the music.

Well, there is the ghett0-fix we used at the party: adjust the timing of effects until it looks good on a specific system.
In this case, we could adjust the 'mugshot' to appear shorter, so that the endpart should start at about the same place as before.

Quote:

Yes, but I think the biggest impact is that by adding the new CGA graphics, some parts are now larger than before, so they take longer to load/decrunch/preprocess. Also, this may have changed the position of the files on disk (there are now more files as well), which may have resulted in larger seek times for certain parts.

Couldn't write here until after the awards show. I clearly saw the datalump philosophy which I abhor regardless of platform, and vectors are a fetish of mine. This was put aside when it was time for us to select the most impossible effect. 8088 MPH was nominated for the That's Not Possible on this Platform award for the 256 colors solution, and won!
added on the 2016-03-25 22:31:29 by Photon Photon
And also nominated for Best Low End Demo! Just for correctness.

I would like to make a short comment on the vectors.
Clearly we make use of some precalc/shortcuts, as every 8-bit platform does for complex shaded vectors at reasonable framerate. However:
1) We felt like people would expect to see vectors like this, and would not be impressed with anything less... "Hey, it's a PC, and you have 4.77 MHz! It should be way better than a C64!". In reality, it is far worse than a C64 because of the limitations of CGA (You need to draw every pixel, no shortcuts with custom character sets or sprites or such. You have no backbuffer, so you have to think of something clever to avoid flicker/tearing/etc. You have these horrible waitstates on CGA memory writes. And the pixel addressing is not linear, with even and odd scanlines in different pages).
2) It is actually sorta realtime, just probably not how you think. Eg, the pyramid object is actually drawn from a timer interrupt routine, while the data for the other objects is prepared in the background (the rules state that the entire prod has to run from a single 360K floppy, so the budget for the vector part was about 70K-80K, and had to include 4 sets of border graphics as well, two palettes and old/new CGA). We had to fight both the size limit and the time limit here. We couldn't put too much pre-cooked data on the floppy, and we also couldn't take too long loading/decrunching/precalcing, because our whole demo had to fit into 8 minutes, so parts had to follow eachother quite rapidly.
3) The loop is 64 frames, not ~45.

When you manage to display more colors than the hardware designers had imagined then I guess you pretty much won the oldschool scene awards! Brilliant stuff!

Perhaps my favorite demo pretty much ever. Always find myself coming back to this one!

This demo is utterly, mind-bogglingly good! 8088 has no business being this capable! The end-credits music had my jaw on the floor; making a CPU bit-bang a speaker to play protracker mod music using 1-bit PWM is galaxy brain stuff... if only you could tolerate the loud 16.5 kHz tone, haha

Is there any chance we'll see a .mod version of that part of the soundtrack?
