Very big thumb up for the modeler and for all the rest (cowdy crew of coders i see!).
And you have also the time to take a cofee while waiting the beginning.

Precalc took about 10 minutes I thinki, but DAMNED this is insane!
rulez added on the 2005-07-25 20:17:23 by ravity ravity
This is slow to precalc, buggy at times, music quality is abysmal. But this is really insane.

An attempt at analysis: the textures are easily generated. The models are pretty smooth; must be subdivs (hence compressible a lot). The animations are "rotate". The music is...

So why not 64k... But even then, this is insane :)

Congrats rgba, you did it again ;D

precalced in about 2 mins here, so no big deal... it's quite alright technically, but it's still just an object show as well as it's 'predeccessor'...

respect!

First of all - I didn't know anything about this. I received a mail yesterday at about 3:00 in the morning with this little intro. I was really shocked and touched :). After a while I started to think - How you guys did it? debevec's RGBE textures looks similar/ camera movements are (almost ???) the same. But the most interesting part - SH lighting coefficients are also there!! So I know why it took 4 minutes on my Athlon 3000 and ATI X850 to calculate :). I'm really really impressed. If You'll tell me that You calculated SH coeffs without using ATI_texture_float - then I'm even more impressed.

Here it is: "zbVj[kmesw" - You'll need it to finish the final - it's a password to final version's dat (zip) file. I think opening the data from demos can only bring good news - such as this :D

Congratulations!!

To be honest, the first time I saw 195/95 I thought "this can be done in 64kb". Not that I could do it, but that someone could, and you did, congrats, the effort is worth a thumb up alone.

This was scary! Why not use a softsynth ( I pressume this is midi, atleast it sounds like that)? You have a couple of k's left and it would really improve the overall feel of this. The soft piano part in the middle sounded really strange! :)

well i have to give it for the shading. the music is sometimes weird (and/or it bugs extremely much on syteesis machine) and i always like consistency in what i see, but still...

Something goes wrong when the precalc is longer than the intro.
But like paradise this one is a pretty impressive work by RGBA.
Funny thing, this one runs with a much better framerate then the Plastic demo on my PC.

impressive yes, especially the 3d models, but i don't like waiting half a day to see one intro. I'll thumb up when you optimize the precalc 10 times faster for the final version ;)

q to rgba: is the lighting full PRT (like in plastic's demo), or just ambient occlusion? I get an impression that it's AO plus some shadow maps only.

i'll just say one thing: you bastards. =)

although:
- all the "lit" stuff is black here (gffx 5700 quadtro.. lame card i know, but it should handle it, right? unless you handle floating point buffers a bit nastily?).
- the music. just.. no.
- come on, make a new prod instead. =) that would be a lot more interesting.
- the precalc is, if it's AO, way too slow for what it is. if it's SH, its quite respectable. :)
rulez added on the 2005-07-26 10:25:22 by smash smash
amazingly long load time, but amazing stuff once it loads. Music is good i think, but the synth definately needs work.

Oh, same card as smash here (quadro fx 1000) and it works fine.

a boring precalc but a kick ass intro !!!
rulez added on the 2005-07-26 11:07:00 by cyb0rg cyb0rg
bonzaj: the "/256" thing is because of the ratio between a 16 MB demo and a 64 KB intro. 16384 / 64 = 256 :). So the intro name could be read as "(195/95) divided by 256".

everyone else: thanks for your comments. The synth will sound much better after some fixes, and about the long precalc time... Well, we'll try :).

This would haven't been possible without pastic's demo, and I feel it like a coop production. Wow! we have great scenemates! now Plastic and Conspiracy (who helped us with music last year on paradise). ;)

Bonzaj: Thank you very much for giving us your demo pass, it will help a lot to do the final version.

Witia: You are a great modeler! it was very fun doing your models, very complex and original. We did them r3d and me, and well... iq generated some models too. lol (XD)

Hi all. Thx for the comments.

Normally the loading time is about 4 times shorter (1 minute on my computer). BUT, just some minutes before the deadline we discovered some problems and had to do a BIG hack (oh yeah, you gessed). Final version willl take 1 minutes of precacl again.

The normal one minute time is normally used for the AO calc, what is done using the gfx card.

No floating point textures are used at all, and no RGBE (what it a god trick anyway). We do something else :)

We will fix the sound next weeks, what will aliviate the loading time. We will also add probably the last scenes in the final version of the very nive 195/95, since we still have some room for space improvements.

Thank you all for the patient, and for the comments. Really!

I wonder what I'd think of this as an intro if I'd never seen the demo? precalc wasn't too bad on my 1.8Ghz processor (about 3 minutes) - it was a little disconcerting when the progress bar went _backwards_ though :P

Anyway, very well done!

All in all, great achievement and cool idea.

7 minutes precalc here. I hope it's much less in the final version. I hadn't seen the plastic demo before seeing this. If you can forget eight minutes of precalc (i think i could) and forget the buggy music (i could it) ... you can simple exclaim "ooohhhhhh!!!!!" ... but i prefer paradise! :D.

Regards mates!

Mad precalc time, don't know if I have ever seen a demo with such a long precalc, I thought it had crashed for a while but I hung in there.

The scenes are breathtaking though I don't know if I could stand the precalc time to watch ovre and over again, still have this thumb :-)

I waited 7-8mins to receive only music but black screen? :(
anyone else receive this?

Does this demo need pixel shading 2.0? is it OpenGL? If so, Please be more specific in readme re: requirements.

winXP, AMD XP2000+CPU, 512RAM, Radeon9200..
added on the 2005-12-13 14:39:34 by Gaia Gaia
Is OpenGL based, shaders 2.0, yes. 58 MB of system Ram and any kind of Windows should do it.

Next week I will upload a fixed version, that takes 4 to 6 times less precomputation time (one minute in my radeon 9800). It will contain also improved music :) Give me just a few more days.
added on the 2005-12-14 18:50:32 by iq iq
This time final version arrived.
Now, it takes about 3 times less precalc time,
with a new synth, some bugfixes and improved visuals.
So, grab the exe
or video
Expect some ports to other platforms in the next weeks.Happy coding!

tip to jewoll: make sure your chords have a nice low range too, it sounded a bit too thin, just boost the same instrument 1-2 octaves lower so it sounds like a brass section.

holy shi...(drool).............................

my word! the calc doesnt take a month, more fps (~40) than original 195/95 (~25), and looks just as good! the only soft spot is that the synth sounds a little cheap, but the eye candy does away with that blemish.

all this on a XP3200+, 1GB, 9600XT 128MB (cat 5.11)

The 64bit Linux version preloads up to around 25% and then hangs there doing nothing (the cpu is idle).
The 32bit Linux version preloads up to around 25% and then segfaults.

This is awesome in terms of visual quality, amount of mesh data pushed into 64 kB, and sample quality. _However_, I didn't count a single effect (unless you count glow as an effect, or the occasional animation of an object); it's all just a flyby, and not a terribly well-executed one in terms of camera work IMNSHO. I wasn't horribly excited about the music either. Still, it runs very smoothly on my machine (even amd64 Linux port :-) ), and overall it's well worth a thumb.
