That look great! One of the very few PC demos I liked on the stream.

Whoa. The foliage (I guess it's somehow raymarched clouds colored green? =) ). So nice. Best of compo for me.

Another one i instantly rewatched. Some parts are so incredibly realistic and immersive that i still shake my head in disbelief. Why? How? It's just 3d fractals right? Stunning production.

The grand experiment finally bears wonderful fruit.

Some scenes felt so massive, it was incredible. The water and the forest from the beginning look amazing and the camerawork in some scenes was astounding. the music did its best to add to the atmosphere. Although at some points it felt a little disconnected, it was a blast to watch.

Blown away by the marvelous soundtrack, the general aesthetics and how masterfully it was all linked together. Loved it!

A bit heavy on the film grain, sometimes it's a bit too obviously trying to hide rendering artifacts (at least that what it looks like). But awesome visuals, very atmospheric, and you nailed the 'alien planet' vibe.

A journey to a new continent, with mysteries waiting to be discovered.
Seriously never gotten a feeling like this from a demo before. Fractals are not fresh, but this demo IS fresh. The atmosphere is unique.
I'd want to explain it, but somehow cannot put it properly into words. Just watch it, you'll get it.

The fractal structures of a lost civilisation presented with a really cool organic feel through film grain, colour grading, gate weave, hand-held cameras and soundtrack full of traditional instruments.

Easily best of compo for me. Fantastic in pretty much every aspect.

I would be interested in reading a bit about how the renderer works. My best guess (thanks to the shot that moves the camera apart from the acceleration structure) would be some sort of world-space surface caching for the first hit rays, and then accumulating the result of further paths in that?

Either way, fantastic work, please keep it coming :)

Love the camera work and atmosphere. Great soundtrack as well

for some reason fractals felt brand new here. maybe because they've finally been freed from confines of tiny intros and given really nice rendering, the benefits of a proper skydome texture and a handheld-esque camera.

some parts were a bit messy but the "real-world" scenes looked epic, next-level compared to the rest of the stuff on show this year. much of that is down to some very good lighting + direction choices and a big soundtrack.
congrats, really deserved to win.

btw, heavy use of reprojection on the render by any chance? :) (noisy when fast moving, artefacts at the screen edges)
rulez added on the 2021-04-06 15:24:34 by smash smash
The nature scenes were spectacular (combined with the fantastic audio design), but the other "industrial" fractal scenes felt kind of jarring and discontinuous to me. But in any case, next-gen fractal stuff. Awesome.
rulez added on the 2021-04-06 15:42:22 by Preacher Preacher
i found the second part incredibly good but the overall camera work is just purely awesome
rulez added on the 2021-04-06 15:49:56 by prost prost
I guess I'll be that negative Nancy who wished that the fractals would have been a bit more hidden or at least transformed from their standard forms. Seeing them as-is gave this demo an unintended(?) 64k vibe.

Regardless the procedural foliage was the best-looking I've ever seen and the water rendering, atmosphere and music were also excellent. As the others already said, this probably should have won.
rulez added on the 2021-04-06 16:00:42 by Warma Warma
Hey thanks for the kind words everyone! This demo was a lot of work and I'm glad to see such a warm response :)

About the renderer: It's a raymarcher that saves world-space points to a big ring buffer instead of directly writing a color to the screen. All the points (31 million) are then projected and plotted each frame. Only a couple of million points are generated each frame so the buffer keeps ten frames worth of history or so, in a way giving temporally amortized ~10x supersampling.

The camera transform for point generation is decoupled from the camera that plots the final points, so I cheat by generating some points in advance :) This is not something that's so easy with regular TAA. I've described this in my last year demo's writeup.

Quote:
My best guess (thanks to the shot that moves the camera apart from the acceleration structure) would be some sort of world-space surface caching for the first hit rays, and then accumulating the result of further paths in that?

World-space surface caching yes, bounce lighting no. Just a traditional single shadow ray on intersection, a few SDF evaluations for ambient occlusion, and a texture read of a blurry irradiance map for IBL. Still, supersampling seems to make it all look more high-fidelity than it is. Also, that shot where the camera moves "outside the scene" is there exactly because I wanted to reveal how it all works.

Quote:
btw, heavy use of reprojection on the render by any chance? :) (noisy when fast moving, artefacts at the screen edges)

It's not really reprojection because all points in the whole ring buffer mentioned above are projected each frame. But yeah, diffuse lighting gets reused and all geometry is assumed to be static, as well as the sun. Specular shading is recomputed every frame and not cached (this is where regular TAA could've helped). I forgot to bump up the internal renderer resolution for the party release which might have reduced the artefacts.

The whole thing is pretty slow but the code is easy to work with. For example the trees are also rendered with the same plotting system even though they are not raymarched (they are random sampled billboards with normals and depth). I might write a more detailed explanation of the whole contraption later.

i'm divided on this one. some of the scenes (and sounds) are awesome, but overall it feels a bit disjointed, with an accumulated of small "wrong" details that broke the immersion for me.

Finally a demo that does something interesting with fractals. In particular, I really like the out of frustum sequence.

The artefacts can get distracting, but overall the impressive visual quality makes them worth it.

I also really like the work done on the camera work to ground it in the world.

Probably the technically most advanced entry from Revision, full of great ideas, and yet there's something that didn't click. It's great effort in all areas, but it just didn't gel for me.
Quote:
Also, that shot where the camera moves "outside the scene" is there exactly because I wanted to reveal how it all works.

I wonder if that's part of what took me out of the experience and turned into into a bit of an imbalanced halfway house of a techdemo and a more zen-like narrative-experience.

There's wonder, awe, in it. Obviously in the text, but also metatextually in that it's not obvious how it works even to the more technical among us. It's a line that's almost impossible to straddle; most demos that try to include the latter tend to always play favors for it and the rest suffers. Not this one though, it's somehow a perfect marriage.

Huge soundtrack (easily best work from shaiggon so far), and perhaps even bigger achievement in demo direction. There are flaws, but insignificant enough that they get lost next to the big picture. It was a joy and a privilege to get to follow the development, yet you still exceeded my expectations. Thank you.

The visuals in this are really great, absolutely mind-blowing! And i need, NEED to work out how to do trees that look like that! (it is for a thing..) Also the realistic camera movements are a nice touch that add to the immersion.

However, i will say i found the whole thing a bit disconnected, it seems to jump from one scene to another without any narrative justification. Nevertheless a solid thumbs up from me.

oh ok, read the nfo.
as far as i know, you can do "atomics" on AMD by just not using the atomics extension and adding it without explicit atomic add.
That's what the IFSRenderer project on github does to splat to the screen and it works totally fine with flame fractals. (https://github.com/bezo97/IFSRenderer/blob/master/IFSEngine/Rendering/Shaders/ifs_kernel.comp.shader).
