Oh God that is a very enjoyable experience! The B&W look is great, and the music flowed in a direction I actually didn't expect. You @noby raise the bar on every single intro you work in!!!

Few months ago, i thought about an intro about a planet in 4k. I started to dream for it like how to execute it, how to show it from space and how to show the planet environments and another things. Sadly since i couldn't code an intro, the idea was lost between my dead ideas.

But you make it. And It's awesome! The Scenes, Directions, Soundtrack. Everything is awesome. And as a big fan of RGBA and TBC's Elevated, This intro talked to me.

Fuck you noby! You rulez! <3

Absolutely stunning. Superb direction, music (esp. the instrumentation) and visuals that could easily stand on their own in any other category (including rendered motion graphics). The fact that there's a coherent story is just icing on the cake. Really nice to watch, sucks you right in and doesn't let go. And it runs well. And the swell at the end clips _just_ enough.. :) Somehow I love this even more than Absolute Territory.

Nitpicks: technically mostly variations of super basic geometry with some (in some areas quite lowres-looking) procedural materials, iteration glow and DoF which with _any_ sharper depth gradients would look _really_ bad (and it definitely rides this fine line with the two spherical bodies if you look at the edges - luckily the framing is nice enough that you're not really supposed to look there) - but yet again, none of that matters at all. (and the title isn't as good as Absolute Territory, but I digress.. :D)

It feels like watching a meticulously crafted magic trick, where even though the method is simple all of the misdirection and patter are so flawlessly executed that even if a trained eye sees right through it, you're still left with a wonderful feeling inside and wanting more. A good reminder that in the scene there's plenty of room for an entire spectrum of productions ranging from mad effects shows to, well.. magic. :)

So yeah.. bra fucking vo :)

P.S. What was that about 4k not being enough for proper camera/sync/direction again?

gShaderReplacer fix for more compliant (ie non-nvidia) opengl implementations:
Code:<Application Name="pbr-waillee_1080.exe" Name0="pbr-waillee_720.exe"><StringReplacer Src="if(!c)" Dst="if(c==0)"/></Application>

Only thing I'm not too happy about is the cheap liquid, though it works better in the blurred parts - maybe it could be better in a bit more gritty, less obvious version.
Apart from that noby just did it again.

the music and graphical artestry is too dissonant for my taste. a "tv noise" filter overlay would most likely have made me thumb this up. i pay attention to details (even for 4ks). just feel something is missing. i either wont thumb this down because it feels like the coder has put some work into it..

t's indeed more a shortfilm than an intro. amazing cold, isolated feeling on the visuals/direction underlined by that wonderful dark ambient'ish music which builds up very good without leaving its path. did not expect those fluid scenes though. fucking amazing :D and then all in 4k.

it's no intro i'm gonna rewatch a lot. it offers atmosphere maybe requiring the right mood. but it definitely is on top of my favourites.

that being said, i take my imaginary hat off to you. well done all around.

love this! personally i find it a bit too slow, but everything works together really well to set the mood.

also, uploaded a 60fps capture, seems a bit less janky than the 'official' one: https://youtu.be/WSVjltKasiw. any chance of getting a version that works properly on ultrawide (21:9) screens?

Fantastic work! Again!
Visually, I only have three little things, that probably had to be so for size reson. The pattern in the liquid is a little bit too repeating/obvious. I found it a bit too long, and since you're in control of the music as well, that's not the reason. The b/w thing isn't really my thing. I know the reasons to do it, but it would be soooo much cooler with at least some kind of color.
Those three things aside (note that at least the two of them are totally subjective and only a matter of taste on my own part) this is truly marvelous!
The instrument design is really, really creat and I was really surprised at the way it develops. Beautiful composition and naturally instruments, composition and visuals works wonderfully as a whole. That's a masterclass at how big an advantage you get when the same person is in charge of everything!
Amazing job, Noby!

There's some great craftsmanship here (mostly in rendering and instrument design), but the liquid thing felt oddly non-Newtonian with the Perlin pattern a bit too obvious (maybe that was intentional, I don't know), and maybe the pacing was a bit uneven?

[scratching noise repeats]

top-5 4k intros without the usual problems in the sound department, direction and pacing. Long without being boring, repetitive without being a meaningless time filler, has an abstract kind of narrative structure that becomes apparent in the end, form over function. I love it!

Truly magnificent. Great visuals, direction and music.

The only thing I could possibly complain about is, that you could have left ~30sec or so to the cutting room floor, but that is more of a personal opinion about compactness.
rulez added on the 2017-10-01 15:24:11 by Warma Warma
Wow those dunes look really nice. I wonder how you made them?

Overall this production feels more like a short film than an intro for the most part. But I do have to say that the water/smoke scene feels unconnected to the whole production and the way it behaves fairly unrealistically is somewhat distracting, but then again if you had left it out of the production the rest would've felt very static since there's very little movement. So I guess that was a difficult choice to make.

I wouldn't put this above elevated(well at least the first part) but gets really close to it.

Awesome, inspiring. Love the atmosphere. The sounddesign and instruments alone deserve a solid thumb up. The fact that there are lovely visuals on top of it just makes it better. I don't see the comparison with Elevated though, besdies the size and the look. Ok and maybe the fact that in both intros the music is solid. This is much darker, Elevated..well kind of elavates. Both do create an mood in which you can get into some sort of meditative/relaxing state where the mind wonders off.

Hmm. I like what this demo does and shows, but it requires lots of suspension of disbelief.

I see perlin-noise displaced coordinate spaces that I have to consciously ignore. I see iteration glow that thins between the planets. I hear melody patterns that compress well.

If I ignore all these, it's gorgeous. But my coder brain sees too much of the mechanisms behind everything.

Still, solid thumb.

All of what Urs said.

But then.

First, let me state here that if we're really at a point where people complain they can see that 4k intros are done with math, we're doing pretty good I'd say. :D

But the biggest point is that again this intro is way more than the sum of its parts. It's one thing to hack up a few spheres and planes with noise on them and some water effect and then add some soundtrack, but Noby again shows that he knows perfectly what technique to use to what effect, and he cares about all the little details that make the difference between "yeah it's a shader alright" and awesomeness, as seen as in the direction and that positively breathtaking instrument design.

IMO the recent Prismbeing 4Ks really encompass what intro making is about. Don't listen to drunk ironic me at the party. Don't stop. :)

Phew, a bit of post mortem I guess...

Thanks so much for all the comments. The response is again way beyond what I expected :)

Some more or less obvious sources of influence and inspiration that I forgot from the nfo:
Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke, Philip Glass (obvious)
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Ralph Steiner
Ansel Adams
Lars Von Trier (also obvious but not explicitly used as a reference)
Dorothy Carter

The Dorothy Carter album "Waillee, Waillee" (1978) is the namesake of the intro. It was originally just an initial project name, but in the end I hadn't come up with anything else that I felt was more fitting, so I ended up leaving it at that. I kinda agree with ferris that there might've been a better name to be come up with, but what's done is done :). I first heard this album I think in late August and it's one of the most amazingly depressing pieces of music I've heard in a long time, or ever even, and I wanted to try to convey some of those feelings it gave to me in the form of this intro.

About demoscene influences, the main two that inspired me are Fermi Paradox and Horizon Machine.

The main motivation for this intro was to break through some conventions I thought I had too much of in my intros. The primary one was length. I don't like how me, or for that matter most 4ks in general always seem to hit the 1:30-3:00 range, so I sought to explore what kind of a 4k could be done if I pushed the minimum length to at least 4 minutes. Secondly I wanted to stay away from anything abstract as much as possible. In the very least I wanted not to have any reflective primitives or something to that effect. To quote Mick Gordon's GDC talk, "Change the process, change the outcome".

About Elevated comparisons. I of course thought of the connection while making this, but it was never used explicitly as a reference. I don't this is in the same league as Elevated, at least not in terms of impact and technical impressiveness.

About some of the criticism, I think it's fully warranted, but at the same time it's also mostly intentional. The pacing is directly inspired by Koyaanisqatsi, and it's intentionally a tad uneven just to drive the narrative better along with the music. All of the geometry is derived from the same cosine based heightmaps, which is why the water looks well... not exactly water. But that's not really important because I think of it more as a "special effect" in the first place, so the fact that everyone still refers to it was "water" or "liquid" means in my opinion that it did its job!

Other than that everything is pretty much just "painted". The lighting is entirely faked and all parameters are used completely liberally just to make it look as nice as possible disregarding any "physical correctness". The content payload is skewed towards the audio anyway (visuals are about 40% of the content and audio 60%), so there isn't much space to do any fancy tricks again.

Some responses...

neoman: Yup, "Lux Aeterna..." is one of my favorite demos ever. No explicit references were made but I probably can't not be influeced by it subconsciously while making something like this :)

zoom: I still want to see that regardless!

reptile: Well, yeah, it's not trivial :), though I didn't hear people complaining about that!

evilpaul: Haha, that's awesome! The fact that it had that effect makes me feel it worked successfully :). It's obviously slightly ferromagnetic with the approaching celestial body's magnetic field causing it to behave weirdly!

kb: Thank you, I think you nailed it.

fizzer: BB Image

I'm planning on putting out a a final version with bug, compatibility and visual quality fixes. All of that is pretty much done but I need to cram it into the allotted size again... those last half a dozen bytes can be a pain. Hopefully done in a couple days, possibly even today.

There we go, this little afterword is now larger than the intro itself. I hope I didn't forget anything.
added on the 2017-10-04 16:07:43 by noby noby
Noby: maybe you fixed them already, but in the party version there's a single "distance(x,l)" that probably a few bytes smaller as "length(x-l)" since you used length() before, and the "vec2(r.xy)" doesn't need the cast.

The intro style isn't quite my cup of tea, but the quality is undeniable.

Final version
Soundtrack (flac)

This version should work on both AMD and NVIDIA configurations, and most of the recent drivers. Also various visual quality improvements such as the mercury's discontinuity reduction technique and post dither* to combat the banding a bit. Also includes the requested 21:9 (2560x1080) resolution version :) as well as some sort of a safe exe.

(*might not work on some drivers because I do bad things, but the safe exe version should have it always.)

Music matches perfectly. Dark, moody, I wonder if we will have only monochrom-demos next year at deadline. ;)

Somewhat have the same "issue" as urs and evilpaul, it does not draw me in and I perceive it in "debug view" rather than getting drawn in as a good movie does. I believe it's due to the absence of color, b/w images are obviously fake. That works for abstract demos like Intrinsic Gravity by Still, but not for cinematic immersion. The forced cropping does not help it.
But that's complaining at a high level, the composition and sequence of the scenes, instruments and music are great work!

Do you craft these instruments by hand or did you write a tool that accepts a target waveform as input and approximates it by brute forcing parameters to the synth and comparing results? Just wondering, because you have so many quality instruments in your prods :) (mad skills if you tune them by hand/ear!)

Except for the liquid which badly broke immersion for me, this is awesome, especially direction and sound.

This is truly in a league of its own!

The landscape looks absolutely fabulous. I really like that some parts are eroded while others are sharp. Not sure how it is done.. something like smooth stuff which got a certain normal?

I think the liquid looks great aswell. As Evilpaul mentioned, liquid might flow in an exotic way depending on its composition and gravity. For example Titan has got liquid methane lakes.

Now only way to top this is to make an evil version of elevated with drum and bass and volcanoes exploding in suppressed teenage anger! Throw in a few hiphop overlays and make the windows speech synth say the N word.

Sooo beautiful and athmospheric. Superb direction! And all that in unbelievable 4k - would have been a winner demo as well. totally love it! <3

Masterpiece of cinematic direction! O_O

And there´s nothing wrong with the "liquid": I like that it convincingly looks rather alien and superficial rather than trying to be realistic (and in the end failing to do that, like basically everyone who tried)

I'm thinking since premiering how nicely endorse this prod. A hard task and most of it was already said. :-)
So I'll just say I'm excited to see Prismbeings working with compact minimalism, bringing every time unique environment/mood. Another shift towards movies narrative is excellent news for demos. We need more coherent(/minimal)/cinematic demos!

Beautiful. Loved it on all levels. Design is great, technically it’s great, and the music is stunning!

I love the fluid too. It’s fitting. Clearly alien... not water, but some liquid that exists at the cold, cold temperatures in this place, being driven by unknown winds in an atmosphere where air would be a solid. It’s also the land in motion, which makes it belong there.

One thing though: it’s so very cold. A cold, dead, alien world. Maybe bring some warmth into your next one :)

Watching this on the bigscreen @Deadline was a fantastic experience. As a huge fan of Godfrey Reggio's trilogy I was delighted.

Nicely executed!

Though the fluid is "interesting" (which is not necessarily a problem, but it's not realistic), and it could be somewhat more eventful.

At first I thought it would be a minimalist dark ambient demo in the spirit of the earlier Eraserhead, and was fully prepared to upboat it for that alone, but then the soundtrack entered full swing and my lower jaw fell so far away it managed to roll all the way to Finland to fangirl over you.

(lol @ "Finnish Elevated")

It's fantastic that you are able to do make whole prod (code, music and design) on THAT level in 4-fuckin-kilos!

Watched it again today and it tastes even better after talking to you man @Demobit and heard where the idea come from. My fav 4k. Outstanding.

Great atmosphere and camera. I think that color could kill the impact here.
And the liquid that does not fit here well, but later when it looks like a linen canvas - suddenly fits.

I didn't feel this when it dropped, I wasn't at the release party, instead I sat at home being sick, watching the stream on my little laptop screen thinking "meh... it's just two spheres" however when this ran in the demoshow of this years deadline I stopped coding and sat down in front of the big-screen to get the full experience, and the full experience I got.
Hats off, well deserved 1st place and subsequent Meteoriks.
