+ pure-demoscene articles this time.

Makes a thumb this time. Well done!

i had to stop reading after these two brilliant remarks in the editorial:

"Fairlight demos are usually very interesting from a technical point of view, showing novel rendering techniques not seen before and all kinds of stuff that seems difficult to program. So these demos are more for a technical audience that is has [sic] enough knowledge to appreciate the skills that went into these productions."

"While ASD and Fairlight are coder-centered groups in which the programmer is the main person and everything revolves around him, Farbrausch is different because their main coder Chaos developed the Werkkzeug tool which enables graphics artists to develop their own demos without entering a single code line."

:D

I'll give it a rulez after spending some time with the mag. It's easy to pick some weak spots. But the presentation is great, esp. the music. And I also just read an interesting article. Thanks for still doing a "diskmag" in 2012.

some good articles and interviews, nice gfx and presentation, and good accompanying music as well.

Just wanted to emphasize again that the music is really great - been listening to it while working.
Only one complaint: I have no (obvious) way of telling which track is currently playing. Therefore I would like to propose adding a "currently playing" indicator somewhere in the music menu. Thanks.

I really wish the Hugi team would consider making music disks and slideshows because they always managed to get some of the most impressive artworks and music contributions in the scene.

I guess I'm just too detached/disinterested in the scene now to care for the articles, but clearly a lot of work, research and chasing down old sceners has been involved.

You know a diskmag has been delayed when you're surprised to see your name on the contributors page, because you forgot that you wrote something. :) (Blockparty 2010 report, it turns out)

If you browse Pouet for Windows diskmags, you'll see this is the first serious one in two years (the last Hugi and Zine were released in 2010). So, as long as it's usable and the articles don't stink, it's a win. But thankfully, we also get a good collection of music and artwork (for those like Wade who don't care about the articles, think of this as a music/gfx collection that happens to have some text with it :). The fonts and interface could use some updating, though. Be sure to check out the MindCandy 3 review/interview, plug plug.

It's a great release with fine graphics, sounds and many texts.

I understand the motivation for including as many articles as possible but please don't repeat mistakes such as using that ray marching tutorial. It really gave nothing away, it comes with no source code and everybody hated it on pouet already :)

Personally, I'm in it for the party reports and all stuff social. All those interviews and anecdotes will stay interesting years from now while technical issues come and go.

That's always how we think about Hugi. The only difference is usually if that text is both stupid and racist, or just stupid. This time it was the latter.

Thanks for the new issue, Adok :) Outstanding articles as always.

Interestingly enough, for those happening to view the mag on a Mac the shell works quite well using Wine, so could also in theory work under Linux as well.

Very nice graphics and music. Sadly the content is still completely shallow, outdated and thanks to the old engine tedious to read, the one or other nice article notwithstanding.

great musixx, nice diskmag style... some kind of scroller or an old skool demo effect in the beginning would have been nice though..

This is really really great! And I think more people should comment on their appreciated thumbs up!

As being part of a relative new demogroup in the demoscene this is really interesting and I really enjoy the articles to find an update about the current "status".

Very interesting to read the Pandacube "creation" article and compare how they work and how we work.

As a musician I ofcourse also really enjoy the choice of music used in this mag.

I totally understand the hard work behind this mag but just want to say that in a "perfect world" I really could enjoy more of this and if I could decide more frequently like 3-4 times per year.

Please keep up the good work!

And in short. "it rulez"

Best regards
Dylte / Jolt

This absolutely brings me back to the old times.
uh... but why talking about old times anyway? It is here and now. Absolutely delicious music selection, great collection of well written articles (do I have to mention Macno's outstanding writing talent making a comeback with a new Abnominio after years?).
Awesome issue!
rulez added on the 2012-05-31 00:10:13 by Parsec Parsec
I have been following this publication closely over the past few years and despite the delay between the most recent issue and the previous one, I am rather impressed with the content and overall package in Hugi #37.

I know better than most the difficulties of putting together a scene disk magazine, so these words I write are as genuine as they come.

The layout and music selection is top notch, a very fluid system that allows easy navigation. The text – yes, the most important part, great balance of subject matter – covering the demoscene quite nicely; I can only ask if editors write longer and more detailed chapters, this is better for me personally as 1-2 pagers just don’t do it for me. The weakest point of the text I feel is the News section. To me, the News chapter provides an opportunity to the editor to really capture the overall health levels of the scene, it also can provide exclusive gossip and lastly, it can preserve/document what is happening (as a diskmag is, to say the least, an offline website and we can refer to it later on to confirm certain events/facts etc). Inject some steroids into the News section and then the balance is as good as it gets!

In summary, a great issue with the coverage I need to feel up to date in the demoscene of 2012, feel proud! Looking forward to the next issue, work hard and keep the spirit flame burning bright!
