Fantastic tribute.
I especially dig the choice of square format, and the animated way you found to uncover those paintings.

Great work.

Pretentious and boring. Little more than a slideshow really with no design or direction.

Colorful, lots of geometric plays - great music - like it!

And made a Youtube Rip for it:

Youtube(1080p)

What I noticed is, when executing the 1080p.exe it actually runs in 1600x1200 (at least on all of my systems) which leads to a false AR - fixed all that so the circles and cubes are with correct aspect ratio (thats how I remembered from stream too).

When Smash or Slyspy take inspiration for their demos from music videos or motion graphics, or when pixellers copy works of Boris Vallejo, they're accused of ripping and copying, but when someone copies minimalist art, it is hailed as a great demo.

I'll never understand the collective mind of demoscene.
added on the 2011-08-14 15:31:07 by Wade Wade
Stylish and well executed, but left me unsatisfied. Would have loved it if you could have pulled the concept even further and given some me some more intense "aha"-moments
added on the 2011-08-14 15:48:59 by Duckers Duckers
I'm really happy that this actually won the compo! :)

Wade: If they'd just cloned the pictures like people used to do with valejo and changed the signature to hide it, it would be ripping. If they'd been 'heavily inspired' by something and made it realtime like smash + slyspy did, they'd get some criticism for not making that clear but props for making it.

They've not done that though. They've taken the artists work and totally brought it to life, while at the same time giving full credit for the original work.
added on the 2011-08-14 15:49:25 by psonice psonice
Psonice: ok, I see your point about giving credit. But I really don't see they've done all that much to these images here except a bit of distortion.
added on the 2011-08-14 15:58:34 by Wade Wade
From what I saw on the video, I doubt they used the images. It looked more like they'd recreated them in code, and animated the shapes.

Who is being pretentious here?

I really love when people completely discard the work behind a piece of art and reduce it to some trivial aspect with some condescending tone.

Vasarely's paintings? It's just a couple of squares.
Modern art? My 5 years old niece could do the same.
Demo? It's just a some flashing shaded pixels.

Yes, here it's just a bit of distortion. Oh, and a pretentious one.

Psonice: I assumed they were vector tracings, but either way they aren't particularly complicated. Now if they could recreate Vallejo works in code I'd be very impressed! :D

I didn't see a disclaimer before I watched the demo. Besides, imagine how pointless the story of The Emporer's New Clothes would have been if nobody pointed out he was actually naked.

Personally, I'm among those who believe that minimalism (like many art forms) is a mere product of clever marketing. The appreciation of it is not much different to that of the latest Hollywood blockbuster or boyband sensation. The marketers and promoters spread the hype and the consumers get caught up in it.

You could say that the trumpet background here on Pouet is minimalism, but without the hype and promotion, it's nothing more than a generic web background.

I gave up blind faith the same time I gave up religion.

I'm more of an illustrator than an "artist" really, although there are a few of paintings I've done I would definitely stand by as meaninful pieces of art.

Says the guy who likes Rebecca Black and Tron...

It's pretty childish to think that there are millions of people who just pretend to like something because they want to seem "deep" and "artsy". And you always fall back on the emperor's clothes "argument", which is pretty weak. What I see in you, is just plain insecurity. Do you even realize the contradictions you just said? You are just as worse as the people with "blind faith".

Nothing wrong with disliking something, but it's just ignorant to dismiss all merits of a piece of work just because you have such principles.

haha. I did like Tron Legacy, but I was joking about Rebecca Black.

Well, I've never seen any decent comeback for the Emporer's New Clothes argument so it can't be that weak.

If anyone can sell this demo (or any minimalist demo) for the same price as the original pieces of art, I will admit I am wrong.

My point is, if the value of minimalism is truly in the visual quality and impact of the art, then an art lover will be willing to buy it based on those merits alone.

really really excellent, i always love it when scene productions embed themselves into a wider context. really nice idea and excecution. wade's ramblings about this being comparablee to vallejo copying is completely idiotic, since this is an excellent example of a truly creative and respectful tribute.

i'm not completely happy with the music though - not that the track would not be good as such, but i could rather imagine a minimalistic techno track for the visuals. than the demo would have the hypnotic qualities of older satori productions like b-10.

Wow! You don't hate it? You don't complain that's not running on you machine? But why? What's wrong with you demoscene people?

This is somewhat of a really nice surprise for us. Two days ago, we were so uncertain, that we asked gopher and digi how they liked the concept. Basically checking if it's worth any more effort or if we should just drop the idea and go straight for the booze and have a nice party. We made quite a lot of cynical jokes about releasing it under an alternative group, Haujobb, maybe.

Wade is completely right with his argument, that this actually IS a slideshow. All colors and all the final designs are copies of original artworks. The design is not inspired by Vasarely. It's his design completely. When starting the project, I was thinking of doing a couple of inspired shaders for testing the shader-pipeline. But as it turned out, it's extremely hard to rebuild his stuff. This guy was a fucking genius when it comes to colors. And some objects look simple but turn out to be impossible to reconstruct in 3d. Out of desperation, I decided to rebuild the original art-work in 2d and only use original colors. It looks easy, but it took me an insane amount of work. (I spent more time on the "Zebras", than on the tower in Finally Inside.).
In that sense, it's a really thin line between honoring someone and ripping him off. I am completely fine with somebody not liking the concept for that reason alone.

Keeping that in mind, winning the compo and receiving such a great feedback hit us by complete surprise. Cynic and Pirx kept pushing for a release to test the player compatibility with a bigger crowd. I just wanted to get rid of this nightmare-project. So, most of the design was done in the two days at the party place. Many scenes are completely unpolished, some are missing entirely and for many, I fail to use the potential inherited in the artists work. But as my favorite painter, Chris Mullins, wrote once: you learn most when doing what you are not good at. And after such great perception, I'm definitely making a final, once I am back from Burning Man.

@gopher: Thanks. I am also curious of where t2 brings us. Next will be the recycle4001 remix :)
@maytz: Thanks.
@sq: Actually, you would not believe how much envy Smash and Navis for their particle count.
@wade: What I said above. And, I personally always loved your style. So it hurts a little to read people picking on you here.
@msqrt: Excellent.
@break, _-_-__ : Definitely. I love the music, but it doesn't match the topic at all. Sometimes, you have to take, what's available.
@friol: I tried to fix the email account. Thanks for addressing that. Please try to send me another mail. We would love to send you a couple of test versions later.
@navis: wow. This comment really means something to me.
@ara: I wonder, too. I guess his offsprings will hunt me down for copyright infringement.
@tarmil: haha, I wish.
@ton: haha, sounds like quite a lot of people had a secret plan to work on this topic. better finish the other points on your list before they are done by somebody else, too.
@anni: thanks for the capture. Very interesting issue with the AR.
@phobium: Thanks! A lot of details make me cringe, though.
@faith, psonice, insectecutor, boyc: thanks. Gives me a little ego boost
@duckers: I now have a couple of pretty good ideas, how I could have pulled the concept much farer. Sadly, I am too exhausted of the topic and so the potential is wasted like so often with demoscene projects.
@mr.doob: thanks. I could now show you some working .net stuff. Would love to continue our discussion when I'm back in BCN.
@gloom: thanks. will come back for music soon.
@gargaj: damn. I guess I was too tired to spot this one. But where is it?
@a-move: amazing, isn't it? Must have been name voting.
@preacher: thanks. You should have won, though. And you should have mentioned your love to Vasarely, because now I will never see your interpretation of his work.
@rudi, dispswitch: completely agree. See above. Also note, that it's Lena's first demo-scene release ever. She is really really excited to read this feedback.

So, some people may like the art, but as a demo this doesn't work at all. The visuals are uninteresting and ugly unless you're really into Vasarey, and the music has nothing to do with the visuals at all, and sounds like it comes from a 4k synth. Oh, and DX10, .NET and 16MB download to show what's essentially a 2D slideshow? Come on.

I see others disagree, but I cannot come to any other conclusion. Sorry :-)

Pixtur: You're a class act man. Seriously, I admire the fact that you approached this demo with caution and humility and saw it as a risk, rather than insulting people who don't like it.

Although I remain very cynical when it comes to minimalism and I really don't like this demo (or the original art), I know you are immensly talented are just as capable of doing something epic and complex too.

It's great to experiment with different styles and break out of one's comfort zone. This one didn't work for me, but maybe your next one will. :)

it's nice to see an idea pulled off so well, and i think you treated the original work with respect & this shines through in the execution.

this is a very refreshing demo one that can be re-watched many times. while i think the music is excellent i don't think it suited these visuals too well. anyway great piece of demo work! :)

Cool idea, nice concept, but I really wanted something more in-your-face from you guys.

That said, the "sync" in the beginning where the first image is created (after the blur) is really cool :)

this could have been a really interesting move from a demo into modern art if it actually did something with the pictures to make them come to life, make them more than their original forms, besides.. you know, sticking a grid expander on top.
brave? yes. nice concept? yes. great result? no, not really. :)
+1 for pixtur's honesty and good attitude tho. (all demomakers take note)

One of these demos you can show to scene-outsiders. And as I had a guest with me at evoke, it was perfect.
Also, I found it well conducted with good pace and smooth transitions.

... and suddenly I wasn't sitting at Evoke anymore, I was 12 again when my parents dragged me into the Vasarely museum in Aix-en-Provence, and had that sense of awe again. I kinda concur with Rez; an idea like this was also residing in some back corner of my mind for too many years. Thanks for getting it out and giving it a nice slap. ;)

Only problem IMHO is that the soundtrack doesn't really fit. It's nice but completely unconnected to what's going on visually.

It's funny looking back at that, and I totally get where you were coming from. When I saw this had won, it was a huge surprise - I'd have expected it to come at the bottom end of the results. But, I would have voted for it if I'd been at the party, which explains why I was wrong :)

Just consider though if you'd gone a little farther that way and not released the demo. The scene would have missed something good (major party winning good!) So I guess the lesson is that if you're doing something you believe in and you're not sure how people are going to react, go ahead and do it anyway, and find out :)

Saying that minimalism was born out of sheer marketing campaigns denotates ignorance, at best. The moto "less is more" was rediscovered all over the place in music, architecture, dance, art in general. In minimalist music sometimes it is the silence between the seldom heard musical notes that is object of reverence. The same concept could be transposed to the visual arts. Saying that paintings of Rothko are nothing but random ink blotches that could be made by everyone is simply stupid, coming from anyone, artist or not.

Congrats for the great work keep it up :)

I didn't come up with that concept myself. It's a popular discussion among artists and academics the world over...but I guess they're all ignorant, right?

Yes yes, I'm stupid because I only see something basic and meaningless when apparently there's all this depth and emotion and all the secrets of the universe within. <sigh>

Well frankly i am not aware of such popular academic discussion about minimalism as a marketing hoax. Can you share some data on this?

Quote:

This is just disrespectful stupidity :) Emotional responses to Rothko's paintings are abundant and well documented, just google it. If visual minimalism is too hard for you, try music, i recommend Arvo Pärt's "Für Alina", for example. I also have the score, if you're interested.

Now that I've rewatched it a couple of times I can only say that I consider this a demoscene masterpiece.

I think the (subtly synced) music is in nice contrast to the "classic" visuals
(sounds to me like "hey, nowadays we do it in realtime. animated. eat my shorts!" :^) )

plus I totally concur with what Exin said:

Quote:
A really nice tribute to the op art of the 60's!

..which is where the demoscene is strongly rooted, is not it ?!

(yea, I've thought of this myself aswell but was too lazy to make a demo about it! I only made a couple of display hacks..)

@wade: I still luv ya, man but IMHO you are being too critical ;) This is still the -demo-scene, right ?

last but not least big ups for giving credit where it's due. Great work, Mr. Victor Vasarely (r.i.p.), Great work, Still!

Well I have to accept I'm in the minority here so there must be something to this demo I'm not seeing. But to be honest a lot of my criticism (as with all demos) is just me playing devil's advocate and trying to rouse passionate discussions. Never anything personal.

Sorry, I realise I'm in a minority here but this doesn't work for me. Music is nice, but doesn't click with the visuals - not so much a syncing issue as just being mismatched with the minimal visuals. It's conceptually brave production, but doesn't really bring anything new to the table in my opinion.

Some of the niceness comes from the borrowed artwork, some of it comes from your use of it. I liked it, including the music. The great PC groups do these kinds of visuals and audio in 64K or less though, so that's the "only" thing standing between you and demoscene supremacy ;) That, and removing unnecessary dependencies...
