Really nice, even for just one scene.

I really like the "poetic" atmosphere, the music is great.
Nice direction, very good demo.
Nice direction, very good demo.
didnt cut it for me. seen better underwater ribbons already plus the design also made me think of the evoke invtro just without the glitches. piggy.
Solid Still quality; and an extra thumb up for the direction and the music. That one break right before the last scene (when it turns green again) is a good contender for "best moment in a demo 2008" :)
Very good music!
what backSpace said, and such living visuals!
a great example on why concept is important.
The start of this demo has some nice classical music, gets more dramatic lateron.
Great piece of music!!
The demo itself has some slick feel to it but when the demo was over I was just thinking 'more ribbons and light effects'
hmm, I am still waiting or a still demo which shows of the real capacities still has. (if there was only enough spair time;)
Not really my fav. from the intel compo 2008.. Sorry...

cool
GREAT !!7
bit boring...
A very good 4k with a demo soundtrack. :)
Also, can we please get rid of ribbons. They are the rotating flat-shaded cubes of our time and a tired demoscene cliche by now.

so nice, artistic, and musicaly my favourite from the compo aswell <3
YES!
For me this feels like the most finished/homogene demo in the compo.
There's nothing really new in here, but it's very well directed, and has this special feeling as BackSpace mentioned.
Oh, and, dq: your track is awesome!
Solid thumb up of course!

Sadly I had to watch the video for this one, the realtime version shows a big white square on 70 % of the screen. (7600GT.)
Clearly the best direction of the 5 demos. Also the tune is great. I think the ribbon could have looked a bit better maybe, dunno. But a really nice demo overal :)

Hm, sorry I didn't get this one at all. Unlike other still productions this one simply doesn't feel special or, dare I say, interesting.
Technically, the overuse of blur is hurting the visuals. And there is this scene with blended billboarded quadstrip ( I remember some red colours) which is a big no no in my book (you can see the triangles overlapping, all creating a big mess).
To be fair, the scene with the fishes/quads flock did look cool.
I think there was just not enough time for this one, but nevermind, it looks like most people enjoyed it so a piggy it is.

For the all time I was watching this I had a feeling that THAT music deserves a better demo. I like the concept very much but I think it could have been executed much better. And... wow... that music. Simply beautiful.
Music fits perfectly to to everything else. Besides FTL&TBL are pure winner for me.
video ?
Starts good, but then quickly becomes boring. And, quasi-red quasi-ribbons are overused enough without this. And, sync is sometimes nonexisting. And, the best of all, it says that "sorry, your cpu is not capable to run this demo" :)
I get the same problem as rob, namely the white square. It looks like a viewport issue or something like that to me. Geforce 8800 GTS.
But I watched the video, and I can only say... wow. This is why I want to watch and make demos. Surreal, ethereal and really otherworldly. And also what kb said about the green moment.

and special mentions for the music. Awesome, awesome music.
slideshow on x800pro, 3.0 req was more serious this time around it seems :(
i second navis. this did absolutely nothing for me, neither good or bad
same here
i have no words here. the best 2008 demo so far. and one of the best music i've ever heard.
brilliant.
brilliant.
I can has moar music like this in demos?
Great atmosphere, but lacks details. Also, if the ribbon looks crap in closeups then no closeups please :)

nice
Pure ribbon poetry, pretty moments.
Best direction in the compo.

very nice.
great stuff, specially the syncs.
really interesting and fascinating one-scene demo-opera. Unfortunately I have to say that I like your previous designs a bit more.
not bad, but it's lacking something. also, i agree with everyone else on the "fractured" ribbons in the closeups being a big no-no. the "light rays" or whatever have the same problem with edges being visible where there shouldn't be any. certainly no showstopper, but it seems a bit "careless".
guess it'll be another piggy then.
guess it'll be another piggy then.
Never mind the ribbons, the visuals and atmosphere are just beautiful. :)
has something catchy, though i find it a bit overblurred in some moments. overall great atmoshphere and flow
@pirx: athlon xp 2400+ or something like that. No sse2/sse3 if my memories are correct, and I guess that's the problem. Still. (pun intended, muhaha)
Fairly nice, very seemless scenes which are always fun.
I like this a lot! the way the atmosphere and the music works together is great :)
@pirx: well, no problem for me; but why isn't it simply a question of switching the relevant compiler flag? don't try to tell me that you have handwritten sse2 code in a demo where basically nothing happens :)
I didn't like it, there was more or less just one scene and it didn't do it for me. Keep it up!
Speechless! The music matched the visuals perfectly. When it builds up for the climax and it explodes, it just sent shivers up my spine, magic stuff!!
Breathtakingly beautiful! Congrats!
<3
It's not really to my tastes, but it is a damn fine demo and the music was really great.
I want a 720p video :)
what navis said...
This was my favourite one in the compo, along with MFX entry.
sublime
" your cpu is not capable to run this :(((
guys :(
guys :(
i love it! the music is great... seeing so many ribbons i almost forgot who made this prod while i was watching
I liked the scene design.
And trax is great.
good demo.
And trax is great.
good demo.
YES! YES! YES!
While it may not be the most technically impressive prod for the Intel Demo Competition this year.. who CARES?!? It is so fucking well directed! :) When the white line breaks free I seriously got chills! CHILLS! :)
My hat off to you guys.
My hat off to you guys.
A "story" told with ribbons was a fun concept. Too bad the end result is a cheesy, blurry and boring mess. Must be a "cup of tea" thing, or perhaps I was watching a different demo than others commenting..
what break said. except i totally digged the soundtrack (and the rest)
a nice demo with a concept. Everything is well done.
A small "so what's next ?" feeling
A small "so what's next ?" feeling
I fully second Gloom on this. The atmosphere in this demo is so .. so... tense, dramatic, poetic I can't find words to describe it. It has the charm and artistry of games like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, and gives me the feeling of being "uncommercial but artistic". Something the majority might not treasure as much. And yes, it gives me chills as well. It has character thanks to the brilliant direction. To me, this demo should be a sure-fire nominee in Best Direction and Best Soundtrack of 2008 at the next Scene.org Awards. The song reminds me of a track I have in my head with vocals, but I haven't found out yet which song it is. In any case, the violins and piano perfectly fit the underwater setting and give the scene an eerie mood.
Lads in Still: Thanks for one of the most captivating demo experiences I had in a long time. You truly brought back a lot of inspiration - something I lacked recently.

Gret demo! Only place I've seen ribbons and liked it. Ribbons are BORING usually because it's been done so many times but this is a very good use of them!
as always, pixtur&co brings real art!
still guys: is the screenshot correct?
i was seeing really different colors those seeds were dark and blurry.
also, i hate you for using almost the same idea i was working on for two months...

i'd really like to know what "feature" of still's engine is the one which causes all of their demos to run at sub-glacial framerates on every pc i try it on, seemingly irrespective of gfx hardware (fast ati or nvidia) or cpu. it must be falling back to software somewhere. is there a magical driver version i need which makes it work properly?
Pretty beautiful but not the best in the compo imho.
very poetic demo.
I love the idea and the realisation. Please give me more
I love the idea and the realisation. Please give me more
a very good work. especially that moment near the end - absolute magic. also, i felt, those glitchy moments were not in the right place here. anyway, it is really inspiring and breathing with life, what is really precious in demos and art in general. thank you!
I just don't know.
Visually it's nice, a bit too blurry maybe :/
The music and the glitchy parts of it reminded me the evoke invintro... and it sounded like "glitches for the mass", the visual fxes are wel synchronized on it but i REALLY don't know, sounds "pro", sounds well done and all but it didn't sound spontaneous, coming from the heart.
The usual bitching done, it's still a very good production.

it's-a-nice!
If you get the big white square thing, turn off AA. Worked for me (with radeon 2600).
Well, first time I watched it I thought it was good, perhaps a bit behind mfx + flt technically but making up for it a bit with the concept and the tune, which is thoroughly great.
Having watched them all a few more times though, this is the one I'll be voting for in the competition. Despite it being a bit behind technically and having some flaws, it's so far ahead of the rest in terms of concept and direction that it wins easily for me. Well done guys!

I love it !
like the looks but the music... some werid mix of cheesy classic, s r`n`b and dub? :) not my cup
Hell yea! Absolutely loved the transition in the middle with the light-streaks. Almost symbiotic music and visuals. Love it!
<3 fantastic, everyting comes together so well in this one.
A truly captivating experience. IMO, far and away the best directed prod of the compo. The music kicks ass...mega props to Still!!!
The best prod of the compo!
Beautiful. Even the music manages not to sound too cheesy :)
Not too cheesy? It was incredibly cheesy :). I got the same feeling as break. The first note of the audio made me go "uh oh", and the cliche tune continued for the whole demo.
It was put together well though. I liked the spinny cylindrical rectangle things that spun around the ribbons for a bit.

Of course it's cheesy. The whole demo is incredibly cheesy. For some reason it still wasn't too cheesy for me. But then again, I have a sceret soft spot for cheese :)
very nice!
Strangely attractive
Great tune, but one effect just isn't enough
A bit too long perhaps but very interesting and pretty demo anyway
very very good...
great music, violins and percussion
3D green ambient, underwater
green, pink, white, black ribbons
like fibers, plants growing
lights, sun light in the center

Definitely best from Intel Democompo 2008. Visual poetry. Outstanding music score. Even my wife very likes it.
hehe.. i didn't see the main character on my machine so I was wondering what the hell the "story" was. :) The capture looks pretty cool. Nice progression
blah
Great
very solid still quality and definitely one of the better demos this year (hence the thumb). however, while i don't find anything wrong or misplaced in this production, i also don't find anything special about it, something that stands out. besides the one original moment when things pause and the hull encloses the seeker, the lack of new visual ideas seems to be drowned in a mess of blur, glow and noise. yes, i don't think seeking ribbons do it anymore. yes, the music was close to being kitschy for my taste. yes, praise for "direction" in still demos seems a bit overstressed ...
the soundtrack did it for me
Pity about the pink color of the ribbon, but otherwise a superb demo by Still (yet again).
wow, that was great! Yes, the soundtrack did it for me too.
My only criticism would regard the colours, but maybe that is a matter of taste.

Tells a story, and does it very, very, very well.
All pieces fell together when the two ribbons met.
All pieces fell together when the two ribbons met.
I haven't loved a demo this much since Gamma by Outracks!! Perfect design for the music, awesome and consistent visuals...Ladies and Gentlemen, this is 2008.
i am not really sure about this one. like monroe said: while i don't find anything wrong or misplaced in this production, i also don't find anything special about it, something that stands out. it's kind of a soulless quality release with a bit more pros (soundtrack) than cons (little variety).
a good demo with better music
It is excellent. Thank you.
Wow .... I really like it! Nice concept and a fantastic score .... makes me dream.
Haven't we seen enough of this?
no
nice effects but what a Bad Music, it's remind me "rondo veneziano"...
déjà vu
some nice ideas and effects, but too aphextwinish music. please stop copying that sound-glitches-synched-with-motion and all wiilbe ok :) so piggy.
Ah this is beautiful! I want to touch it with my fingers (hint hint: make it interactive)
Music is awful but you can change the mp3 :)
Music is awful but you can change the mp3 :)
Nice, but i almost fell asleep.
i dont think its soulless at all. i loved it.
Too much of the same. And that thing in the music that sounded like someone banging a bathtub was annoying.
the music is good, and there is some good sync and direction. But that doesn't help when I'm bored to death. Not much entertainment value due to a lack of actual content
oh god...
I can't piggie or thumb down this even if it ranks 4th in my opinion. LOVED the music, but it could do without the glitch:ish cuts. It's interesting enough.
this team *still* great !!
Like it a lot, it had a few classic "still" atmosphere parts ... so yes its a big demo !!!
Same time its hard to resist with this big concurrence in intelcompo ... its really big big compo ...

sorry, your cpu is not cappable to run this demo
Great murky, almost organic effects here. It felt like being iin a fluid which in this case added greatly to the mood. Nothing blew me away but I felt carried along nicely. It was a great demo experience.
amazing soundtrack
I like the music in this demo. As for visual content, other Still's demos looks much better for me, piggy this time.
The music is good, visuals range from cool to boring -> a "small" thumb up.
nice music, but bit boring...
Nice!
Impressive !!
i've spent a good time watching & listening to this beauty
we need more music like that !!
why not doing Salsa ? :)

Very pretty and nice tune!
not as good as it gets, but good, and for that a thumb
awesome.
Very impressive, loved the colors, which for me makes this demo in some sense groundbreaking in its design, and Im sure we will se a lot of use of similar schemes in the future. Bravo!
ribbons are not dead \o/
Nice demo, very good sound. But had to watch it with capped.tv link... Diashow with 1950Pro and Pentium 4 was to slow for the 720p video...
Nice
Superb! Idea and style!
A beauty, music was nice but could have evolved a bit more.
I like it
much blur covering up lack of content and detail. quite impressive that they still manage to make a good demo out of it
It may have a single effect/screen but I really really love the music and the visuals fits with it very well.
Perhaps my favourite from the Intel demo compo this year. Has atmosphere and continuity over all the rest while succeeding in being very close to coder porn at the same time. Unlike most of the comments suggest, I thought the music was the weakest link - I liked the classical parts but those idm glitches ran out already long before 2008 and rather distracted than completed the whole. Or perhaps that's just a matter of taste. Nevertheless, please - more of this!
ugly gfx, bad direction and pathetic, awful music.
best music, best demo at this combo
boring visuals, but i like the music - so no thumb down ;-)
I really didn't understand this one. how to make a bad version of invoke?
don't know if it was the pathetic music (specially that lead instrument), the direction or size.
don't know if it was the pathetic music (specially that lead instrument), the direction or size.
by far my favourite from the compo. Some really neat sync work, especially just after the fish swarm thing. the only demo in the compo that had some feeling of progression. Also the soundtrack was pretty neat. maybe a bit cheesy, but neat.
As uncle-x said, although the cocoon demo was good too.
awesome :) this indeed is a show isn't it? fantastic visuals and soundtrack <3
The "plants" and ribbons appear to be black on Radeon 3870 X2...
Like the previous still prods, I love it :).
me likes this.
great music, ok visuals.
great music, ok visuals.
It's the seventh still's product, and they goes better and better.
This one is pure masterpiece.
This one is pure masterpiece.
i love the soundtrack more than anything else in this demo
it just makes me feel good (tm)
it just makes me feel good (tm)
Too "polygonish", but neat anyway.
awesome!
some may fiind emo strings and snaredrum (taken straight out of kitchen cabinet) not thad bad together...
Hmm, maybe it'll grow on me. Tune was pretty funky, but just can't bring myself to thumb it up sorry as not something i'd wanna watch again.
Wow! I love the feel and flow of this demo. The music is lovely, and it fits the demo perfectly. Well done, guys!
terribly slow on older (x1600, sic!) hardware
yes please, one more time!
Argh. Maybe it's just me but I find the music really bad. Makes the demo "unwatchable with the sound on" bad... apologies. This kind of tune needs to be done well - or not at all, imo.
Awesome.
Love the cup scene!!
After wathing it again and again and again it actually is VERY good! Awesome music and direction!
wathing == watching
A thumb for the soundtrack...visuals so-so, too flat for my tastes.
A little step backward, but still a good prod.
A little step backward, but still a good prod.
cheesy
I think I have a new favourite demo!
Not quite sure how to comment this.
I want to say that it beautifully executed, but on the other hand something tells me it's not.
Some parts of it feels empty - hard to explain, but it's like something is missing that would really make me jaw drop.
Hard to say what it is - it could be a complete makeover, but it could also be just a tiny "je ne sais quois".
The music is quite ok - I mean, apart from featuring the most annoying snare drum knwo to man - it's quite soothing and seems to fit the demo rather well.
Overall, I'm afraid that we're landing on a piggie - and I'm so uncertain that if I came back 2 months from now and saw the whole thing again, I might raise my vote.... if it wasn't for that damn snare drum.....

the atmosphere is amazing, and the music fits really good.
besides the fish shoal effets this is not something i find very enjoyable.
Too bombastic for me. Piggy.
Awesome, loved it! =)
RIBBONS!!1 In a very gorgeous way.
FICKEN!
Less is more. Great synching and direction.
Awesome music and... uhm... direction! *buzzes off*
hm somehow not my cup of tea...
I think I got it after watching it on the big screen. This demo is beyond its "technology". I've made my mind that I like the music. Best moment ? The black strip covering the yellow.
i love you
same as Navis. Ruled on the bigscreen.
honestly, i liked ferner better. maybe i'm just getting tired of ribbons'n'glow.
Nice prod, I love the music :)
great atmosphere in this one. not sure I like that metalic snare, but it does give a special feel to the sound.
gonna see this one again for sure.
gonna see this one again for sure.
ok one, nice atmosphere
I think this is a wonderfull, wonderfull demo and i'm NOT usually a sucker for pc demo's in general, but the visiuals and music fits together so well it gives me the chills and that's never a bad sign. awesome piece of poetry cynic and the gang
niubân!
http://www.offworld.com/2009/03/linger-in-shadows-devs-among-s.html mentioned this demo!
Great music and effects
yes.
Great music, great ambient, thumb!
Very atmospheric and colorfull. Worthy winner!
Nice demo, great tune.
But I can't see the ribbon at all with my Radeon 4870 (tried Catalyst 9.3 and 9.4) on WinXP SP3. I have tested many configs with and without ATI Tray Tools but nothing worked.
Any ideas out there would be appreciated. Thanks.

Still gives me goosebumps every time i watch this gem.
The music, visuals, colors, direction.. it all fits together so well and really creates a digital piece of art with tons of soul.
I love it. :)

Malcom: I believe you just need wait for a driver fix. Most still demos seem to dislike ati ;I
Oh, and a thumb up
Very nice and chill!
Like it. Balanced visuals, excellent soundtrack and well directed.
great demo and very very good music) listening to it on my mp3-player among beautiful instrumental and classical music (= thnx a lot!
Feeling in this prod is awesome, though the music is cheesy :)
has the power.
tru
Magnificient.

I almost cry every time I watch this work, I want to thank the still members involved with it, cause it is extremely rare to feel emotions other than "whoa this effect rules" while watching a demo.
<3
simply beautiful! I want my still fan card!
very great music and graphics
no idea i could ive missed this until now.
its basically still-style reference.

that sentence should actually read sth like 'no idea how i could have missed this until now.'
So inspiring!
Very st(y|il)lish, and a great direction.
It's unfortunate it doesn't work on my ATI 4550 powered machine (main ribbon absent, and a coupl of effects broken).

I can't believe I didn't comment on this before! Definitely one the best demo soundtracks ever, and a brilliantly immersive demo to match it.
rather elegant :u
i only got this working well using wine on ubuntu - due to problems with ATI graphics cards, despite some great masterpiece of arts!
DEMO-RIBBONS!
Best use of ribbons of all time, a true masterpiece ! How could I forget to thumb this one up ?
Extremely boring..
The not ending ribbon sucks.
Would be a thumb up if 64K.

Such a beauty!
great!
Brilliant music with lovely visuals, awesome atmosphere and great sync. One of my all-time favorites.

a great example on why concept is important.
or why concept is boring.
the concept here I think was, "we have 3 routines and a song, let's combine them into one scene that we stretch out for the duration of the song". I guess that's just not my cup of murky ribbon soup.
seaweed ftw.
Good.
rulez, I expected more sync tho
transcendant
