You had me right from the start but then you had me again when the rain started.

Does well what it was set out to do. It's a success. Perhaps what impressed me the most was the typeface at the end :D

The motion-blurred rain and thunder sounds were a nice touch, but to be honest, this intro didn't do much for me. I think maybe the music is unfitting, and the scene in the screenshot could've used some 3D panning of the city.

pc4k competition washed away.... like tears in the rain

what phoenix says, but my thumb goes up for the sake of the lightning sound

Nice looking landscape

Good: The intro starts nice, with the city looking moody, for the 15 seconds or so...

Bad: ...but then the lead instruments start and they sound bad. And the city lights up like a Christmas tree and starts looking pretty bad too. And the ground flashing white looks odd, and then it starts flashing even more to make it look even more odd.

Confusing: I'm not sure if the technomancer is a reference to the 2016 computer game, 1998 Gurps campaign, a way to avoid copyright strikes from William Gibson, or just a random sounding cool-sounding cyberpunk word tackled on to it. Are we supposed to be watching a thunderstorm of magical origins? That one camera feels like POV from someone falling or perhaps a building is collapsing, but there's no other explanation? Maybe I shouldn't read too much into it, but this going with the more realistic style / cinematic style, it hinted it has a story to tell and I at least didn't get it.

grats for the win :) well-deserved. Good to see your prods reach a wider audience!

Nice amount of atmosphere compressed into such a tight package! Loved it!

It was kind of a mixed bag in terms of quality but still really great overall and the logotype at the end is excellent.

Thumb up for the view and rain and what the hell with the sound. Just use single dark note, or bright note, dependidng of the thing, but these horrible try outs, pls.

Building such a mood and atmosphere in 4k is definitely something. The fact that it runs on GNU/Linux is doubly interesting to me. Beyond being able to finally run a cool intro natively on my PC, it also means you made the effort to create your own tooling instead of using all the same tech everyone else is using to make windows intros.

Dies with an "Illegal instruction" message here. From dmesg:

I'm on an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X...

Oh, I guess that's at the end of the intro, judging by the youtube video...

Really great mood but terrible music by today standards.
rulez added on the 2025-08-07 10:32:59 by hfr hfr
@kusma: Yeah, right now the intro ends by running into an illegal instruction after playing the music, which is a nasty size optimization we do sometimes. We will probably do a "final" version where it properly quits when we find the time.
absolutely great 4K spoiled by the cheap-sounding instruments imho.

Nice Bladerunner reference. The city could do with a bit more irregularity, but great visuals and very nice camera and light choices!

The intro is extremely impressive, but considering the following:

  • You're not using the standard file dropping approach.
  • It's an ELF32 but the machine seems t is set to amd64.
  • I'm not seeing any ELF header blocks asking for libGL.so or anything.

...I'm most interested in how exactly did you do this.

Also, the typeface was cool, but also makes me think it must have cost so many bytes...

Really good solid atmosphere from beginning into the end! Worthy winner 8)
rulez added on the 2025-08-12 18:18:42 by deepr deepr
@Trillkk: We are using our own linker called cold.
It's basically a crinkler clone for linux. The elf it creates has a broken header, because we're putting some code in parts of the header not needed for our purpose. It is an ELF64, just the metadata field which specifies this is set to ELF32 because that field is ignored by the linux kernel anyway. It uses the e_machine field, which is set correctly.

We are loading the libraries by loading and running the ld runtime part ourselves and then intercepting it and hacky stuff like that.

We will release our linker at some point, but there are still some TODOs left that we want to finish before.

Also, I just tested it, removing the typeface makes the executable around 150 bytes smaller right now.
