Boaha, rocking shit!!!

ATI Radeon 8500, Win2000, latest drivers: "checking d3dcaps is for lamers", and then just a white screen with the music.
KEWLERS SUCKS
Doesn't run, probably TNT2 is the reason.
I love the sync, the pace and the arrogance. Very cool!
And I'm really loving this growing vocoder trend!

it blew my mind.
would you believe this demo is created by a fifteen year old? The scene is alive!

*sigh*
I'd really like to see this, but:
"checking d3dcaps is for lamers"
and then:
"failed to initialize Direct3D9"
Oh well, there's plenty others that work.

its o - d - d in your motherfscking face! thom; what? others that work on your computer? thats the first time.. ;))
Not as bad as I feared :)
the colorscheme suck! :) maybe that's because i'm colorblind?
didn't deserve to win.
didn't deserve to win.
goodie good good
doesn't work with my Radeon8500 (black screen w/the music), but seems to work with 9700pro and 9500.
odd leverer bra varer! heia odd.

Ooooh. I am speechless :)
nice
Woha! This was suprising, esp from ODD ;D
Nice work!!!
Nice work!!!
kicked plenty of ass on the big screen =) superb music wich pushed me down in my chair for a long time. Cool vocoder effect. Very cool graphics and style. demo of the year so for for me!

damn, now I have to install windoze again :-(
Nice music! Definitly the best demo from TG this year.
I don't care what others say.
The music, bad ass attitude and the TV make this demo rock :D

way better than expected from odd :)

WOW! Respect! =D
this demo is odd. the music (that could be much better without the vocoder) somehow doesn't match the rather boring visuals.
arrogance rules!
rp: the music *better* without the vocoder? you need to listen to more wutam and j-break :) miamistyle forever!

First odd prod I've watched. What could of turned out to be a Variform wannabe ended up being quite fantastic. Great work, and the music is rocking in your motherf**king face!!!! :)
Demo with attitude! The vocoder works brilliantly here, although I hope we're reaching the end of the vocoder-in-demos-hype that I've felt we're seeing since "planet potion" (if you quote some earlier demo/intro using vocoder, you're lame. Yes, it's been used before, but it's gone a bit too far imho :) Vaipon: be sure to catch the rest of ODDs productions. They rock.
BEST-DEMO-EVAIR
Someone should make an avi out of it so non-windows users and those with the ATI cards can watch it.

I enjoyed this very much.
nice music and fitting effects (except for that tunnel part).
lyrics were a bit cheesy, but then again prolly on purpose.

Won't run with a Gforce 4 TI 4200
Good music and sync, gfx are a bit on the dull side and the 1st 3d scene is at 1-2 fps for me (GF3) (some OGL fallback?)
duh, it's d3d, dont know why it would go down to 1 fps, then, didnt seem to be much on the screen
Very groovy soundtrack, i especially digged the lyrics.. effects were somewhat on the weak side in relation to the soundtrack, tho. not enough attitude there... Still rather good shit.
This was amazing!! Nice to see that they "stole" a bit from variform and made it really good and interesting + added lots of other really nice parts! The song was f**kin great, loved the lyrics!
Is the coder of all this 15?? Oh, I feel old and tired :(

excellent!
Love it.
arrogant, didnt really grab me at all.
it really rocks! kicks all prejudices about ODD!
Fix here
Made it run on my GF2, might help some others with problems aswell.
All in all I still like Variform better... and I doubt those are really 640 metaballs :)
(that many metaballs would probably just give one big deformed blob, no more actual balls visible)

very good for a TG democompo in 2000 + *
I remember some years ago when even Fadeout could win the tg democompo 2 years in a row =) (fadeout rules)
this one was kickass!

Fabulous! Great humour aswell.
yae!
Scali: newsflash! It IS one big deformed blob :) I talked to tr0ndersODD, the main coder, a few weeks back, and apparently it actually is 640 metaballs on screen. Just try it yourself, to see what it looks like ;)
make insulting demos is for lamers ! but I like arrogant sceners ;)
It's ok, the syncro is nice, but it's missing memorable scenes. But next one should be the good one, I hope ;)

To get the cool music without running the demo every time, rename the .dat file to .zip and unpack it.
If someone has said this further up, I am sorry, but I was too lazy to read it. =)

renaming it to .rar makes more sense, actually. since it's a .rar-file and all... sucky demo.
Haha, sorry. I use Total Commander, so whatever pack format I rename it to, it unpacks it.
Kusma: Are you insane? Tr0ndersODD is the best coder on the scene today! ;-p

A lot of nice design and sync, and the soundtrack is very cool. Even though the effects are somewhat medium, it deserved 1st place no doubt! Looking forward to their next release =)
great! love the music :D
not bad, but not particularly good either.
Kewlers guys, here come your children.
is ok
dixan: it's good to see someone doing variform-style effects if there really is demand for stuff like that, 'cause we as stated before, decided not to continue on that line of design.
BetongApe: I did try it myself, and there's no way you can get 640 metaballs looking like that. Theirs is more like 64.
640 looks like a blob with the occasional dent sticking through it. This one has balls rather than just dents... That just doesn't work.
I can make you some example programs if you don't believe me... Or make them yourself... With 640 balls I was unable to find any threshold value to get anywhere near ball-shaped things. The field function just isn't ball-shaped anymore, too much 'noise' :)

Heh, rather amusing.
in this demo there's not one single part that would look nice.
the first half tries to appear cool by being a variform ripoff, the second half is just ugly.
the only positive thing to mention is the music, but this alone cannot make a good demo.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF BLOBS?
Sorry about that.
Sorry about that.
tr0ndersODD actually showed me the metaball-code (I was sceptical my self), and it actually IS 640 indevidual animated balls. He did on the other hand use a lot of well known tricks in order to get it as fast and clear. The demo still sucks, though.

Hahahaha!!! Really nice demo...
Surely the only one worth the effort watching the demo-compo of the gathering'03...
A bit sad to see that there haven't been more well-made entries to TG this year!
Hope that this won't break TG's neck in future...as I surely like the event itself! And it would be sad to see it going down cause of low-quali releases...
But back to the demo here:
It reminded me of the 'elitegroup - we are very good' - motto!! ;-))
Pretty mean with the vocoder-vocals and its text!! ;-)
But therefore kinda funny as well.
Effects weren't that bad..although it reminded a bit to the kewlers demo of course.
Anyways it was done quite well and the music fits to the whole demos style.
So for me it surely deserves the 'thumg up' here! :-)
Keep it up, guys!

kusma: I can show you my code with 64 balls and 640 balls, and I can assure you, the 64 balls looks much closer than the 640...
Unless they want to show me the code and prove that it's 640 balls, I see no reason to believe them.
Also I don't think it matters much.
64 metaballs or 640 metaballs, it's all very boring and useless.

i'm always amused to see how scali succeeds in starting the most senseless discussions available on the web and besides that, proving not to know who "the odd guys" are ;-)
i saw tr0nders coding this demo at breakpoint like an hour before the compo at tg
Okay then, I've made 2 examples.
Download examples here.
Decide for yourself which one you believe is closer to the Odd-one.
I used a 48^3 grid, dunno what size Odd used.. Not higher anyway, I think, and lower would make the 640 balls look even less good.
I may be a lamer, and I may not know (or care) who the Odd-guys are, but I don't have to lie about the number of metaballs in some demo.

the rule goes:
the more metaballs your demo has, the better demo it is
the more metaballs your demo has, the better demo it is
both you guys' metaballs are fucking ugly (come on scali, do better than this if you're trying to outperform someone..)
it's a well-known fact that tpb and dxm (according to stefan) own the most optimized and well-looking implementations of the overused effect.

top stuff. But remember, the last person who said 640 of something is enough for eveybody... was wrong, Bwoy was he wrong.
Sure, try to flame me for trying to make my metaball-routine look like the one in this demo. It was not about the visual quality.
And try to throw it on performance?
This was not about performance.
And no, all metaballs in my code are the same size, nice try.
So there are three flames, none of which have anything to do with the discussion at hand.
plek: I could make the balls look like your demos aswell... That's no problem at all, you tend to use a very low amount of balls, and then very large (about 5?)... That way you need no optimization, and even with a low gridsize (32^3? :)) it will look very good... You can run that stuff at very high framerates even with the most naive implementation... Big deal.
Anyway, rather lame to try and flame the 'lamer' about all sorts of non-related issues when he proves you're wrong.
Try again.

you took it serious, what did you expect? :)
Great tune...more Stephen Hawking raps, please. The effects are all pretty boring except the controversial blobs. A textured tunnel? Blah. I imagine the tune, text sync, and code eating bit carried the production on the big screen.
(and both examples quit after changing screenmode :)
int amount_of_blobs = 640;
and as a general opinion on this thread: pfffft :D
and as a general opinion on this thread: pfffft :D
scali: nonsense. note that those blobs (10 in tpb-02, equally sized, 46x46x46), ran *fast* (and thats more than 60 fps yes) on a p2-300, including lots of other shit happening. this is indeed no more than normal, but certainly not naive.
anyway, your 640 balls implementation runs slower than the one in the odd demo. so guess who's wrong ;)
still i don't see any excuse for making blobs that look like pure shit ;-)
anyway, your 640 balls implementation runs slower than the one in the odd demo. so guess who's wrong ;)

plek: I never said that your implementation WAS naive... I just said that the stuff you did was not exactly cutting-edge... (and you have to admit that a p2-300 is not exactly cutting-edge either).
And 'anyway' I never claimed my implementation would be faster than the odd demo... besides, my entire point was that they don't HAVE 640 balls. Also, they never said how big their grid was... Mine was 48^3 as I said... It's not hard to be faster with a smaller grid size anyway.
Therefore I can not see how I can be 'wrong', as I never made any claims about speed, and it's hard to compare when not knowing the exact gridsize of both implementations...
Also, I never meant for the blobs to look good... I spent exactly 5 minutes on making the example programs, and I could care less about how they look... I never made any claims about that anyway. The only claim I made was that 640 balls look like shit, which they do. So you've just proven my point then.
The entire point is that you can see that 640 balls create such a noisy field that it's impossible that it can look the way that it does in this demo... There are just too many energy sources influencing such a small area...
Which anyone with half a clue would realize even before I actually made the example programs anyway.
So grow the f*ck up please and leave me alone, instead of trying to flame me on unrelated issues, and acting like a 3-year old.

You can use a different energy-function, but that still won't make the code fast enough (regardless of all the flames about my code, I for myself know that it is a reasonably decent implementation speed-wise, and while one can probably come up with a considerably faster implementation, getting 3-4x the framerate as my code is simply impossible).
By the way, when are you going to mention the gridsize you used? That is vital information in this discussion you know. Need to hide something?
Also, then there's the point of WHY?
Why would you use 640 balls with a tweaked/replaced energy-function, if the end result is more like what you'd get with 64 balls and a different energy-function?
1) The 64 balls version will always run faster than the 640 balls version (hey you could even add some extra balls!)
2) Nobody can verify that there actually are 640 balls anyway, so if it looks the same, who cares.
I'd go for the faster implementation, if both give the same result. And I think any sane coder would do the same.
Bye now.

Oh, and if you really want to convince me, you can always send me the source.
brilliant!
lovely discussion :)
Gee, I hadn't thought of that!
I never visited Paul Bourke's wonderful page!
Mind you, this means that you don't actually HAVE 640 balls, you realize ofcourse, 'dummy', since the bounding box eliminates them (probably many).
So my point still holds... You can do the same with much less balls...
Also I still haven't heard about that gridsize...
And you're not going to explain, let alone send the source are you?
You sir, are full of shit. Bye now.

"failed to create rendertarget-texture"
i think the idea he tries to state is that the bounding ... does not eliminate them as in cull them out of the grid, but you could implement a way to cull them while calculating an energy value for a certain point on your path. could be done pretty simple and fast.
Yes, from the little info that he has given so far, I was able to guess that he uses an energy function such as the one presented by Paul Bourke, which drops to 0 for enery source that are 'too far away'...
So what you can do is this:
Divide your grid up in sectors... For each sector, create a list of 'possible energy sources' by discarding those whose value drops to 0 in that sector.
Now as you evaluate the grid in each point, you only have to evaluate the sources in the list of the current sector.
This ofcourse means that having 640 balls is pretty much impossible. The way this thing is tweaked, it probably discards more sources than it actually uses in general. The effect is about the same as ..say.. 64 balls?
Am I right here? Or am I completely off?

Scali..i dont know if your off or not. But you sure are tripping over this one. what is the big deal? why be so anal about it? From what i have seen, you seem to prove you point. But...why?
tr0nders...no altso poeple who want to help others get started and people who wants to prove their case. I fail to see how any of those two makes you lame?!
Okay, if I am off, please tell me the right solution then... That's the least you can do, if you don't want to release your sourcecode (why not?)...
Also, 40x40x40 is such a low gridsize... Even plek uses more on his PII-300 :)
iblis: I hate being flamed and insulted for no good reason at all.
I mean, I don't care whether there really are 640 balls or not... I only made the statement that it didn't look like there were 640 balls. I also gave an explanation why I thought so. And then some people found it necessary to insult me etc... So I tried to visualise my explanation... And I get flamed even more.
So, if I'm wrong, don't flame me, prove it. I have not seen any proof yet. Have you?

nice
I rather thought the demo consisted of merely overdone effects. Metaballs were cool a long time ago. The fact that you have 640 of them (or not, I personally think it looks more like 20 or something, and they're ugly too) doesn't take away the fact that it's an overused effect. The vocoder thing in the music drove me nuts, and the 3d was ugly and using some textures from nVidia's texture pack it seems.
Oh yeah, and the "we are leet, the rest are lamers" attitude sucked too :)

i totally agree with scali
visually, i think it would have been better to put 20 balls, but subdivide a lot more

Comparing this to Variform is like comparing Bronix to Michael Jackson.
it keeps surprising me how scali loves to ventilate his common knowledge.
Damn,. I still can't run this!
P.S. Yeah, Scali rulez!!! I think he should do a demo now with all that knowledge :)

You jealous, plek? Sounds like it anyway.
Anyway, I am probably biased, but that 'proof' program doesn't seem to change much after the first few seconds...
I wonder if anyone else agrees with me on that.
If it really keeps adding balls all the time, I can only wonder why neither the speed nor the appearance seem to be affected much, if at all (I would say more balls == more overhead == less performance. I would also say more balls == more energy == more volume... Since it appears that you don't adjust the threshold while adding the balls, I can't understand how the volume doesn't grow at all, and in fact actually appears to shrink at times). And I guess that even the coder himself has to agree that at no point in time it actually LOOKS like there's anywhere near 640 balls on screen.
If there really are 640 balls in there, I wonder why the hell you bothered, since the appearance is not affected (the field function must just 'saturate' and nullify all balls added after about... 100?), and the appearance in general is not exactly good.

optimus just said it all ;-)
And why should I make a demo? To prove myself? I have nothing to prove.
Besides, I would most likely not put metaballs in a demo, because they are the most boring thing you can possibly do with Marching Cubes, and have been done to death already. And if I did, I would try to make them look good, rather than having ugly slow metaballs on screen and printing '640' over them.
Anyway, demomaking is not for me. And I don't pretend that it is either, so I don't see why I would have anything to prove.

thumbs up for the arrogancy ;) I believe two hairy balls should be enough for everyone.
btw, why being so arrogant (on this page, not in the demo) when it really seems that you just have cut/paste the tunnel code from romka's opengl tutorials...
this is d3d though, dear guardian. and besides that, i don't think the person who coded this would have to do that :)
plek: i know this is d3d
i also say that the tunnel part REALLY looks like the romka's opengl tunnels tutorials: same shape, same "jumps" in the catmull-rom spline interpolation when travelling near junctions
so, maybe he did it himself, which i hope he did, maybe did he grabbed the tutorial and the rendering code could have been changed to use d3d
one again, the demo looks nice, but there is nothing fantastic in it, that's why i think there is no need to be so arrogant...
plus, the metaballs' discussion doesn't clearly exhibit that the coder has understood the points mentionned by scali on what's going on when rendering implicit surfaces with marching cubes (more balls, more volumes, scalar field cut out and so ...)
finally thumb up to compensate previous thumb down, only because you trust the person who coded this :)
that's my point of view
i also say that the tunnel part REALLY looks like the romka's opengl tunnels tutorials: same shape, same "jumps" in the catmull-rom spline interpolation when travelling near junctions
so, maybe he did it himself, which i hope he did, maybe did he grabbed the tutorial and the rendering code could have been changed to use d3d
one again, the demo looks nice, but there is nothing fantastic in it, that's why i think there is no need to be so arrogant...
plus, the metaballs' discussion doesn't clearly exhibit that the coder has understood the points mentionned by scali on what's going on when rendering implicit surfaces with marching cubes (more balls, more volumes, scalar field cut out and so ...)
finally thumb up to compensate previous thumb down, only because you trust the person who coded this :)
that's my point of view
Scali asked me to post the following, and i'm a nice guy so i will:
i posted above that neither of his example blobs work, and later it turned out to be due to my shit PC which supports no SSE.
there.

tr0ndersODD, the romka's site is not online anymore :/
it was http://romka.demonews.com if i can remember correctly.
Paul Bourke turned some of the tunnels tuts to opengl stereographics if i can also remember correctly.
Maybe there are 640 balls in your code, although your example did not convinced me. Put 640 balls on the screen with a very small radius, they grow the radius to make them all blend, and we could all say that we saw 640 of them.
Concerning what i'm capable of or not on metaballs, i perfectly know all tricks involved in marching cubes' optimization: surface tracking, caching, vertex sharing, field function that drops down to zero, lists of primitives that influence each cell, etc
I gave an url on #coders, it showed 64 metaballs on a 64x64x64 grid.
I don't want to spread it more, since I want to keep my effect for a demo, but I can mail you the .zip if you want

The fix made it run finally. It's fucking brilliant and funny parody of that kewler demo, simply amazing! Hey,. the same exactly problem goes with unlimited blobs and scali parody,. when I will be able to watch these? Is there something I can do manually for that lamer 3d caps or something??? Agh..
yeah. watched this in the Hotel Kurva with the norwegians. i have a hazy memory that this was quite ok.
I can't remember this one in detail, but I remember liking it. Anyway, it deserves a thumbup just for the catchy tune.
bitching and selfvoting sucks...

well done, good sound, perfect synchro, fine metaballs ... what can i see... stay like this and better ;-)
great synchro, a good fist part, but the tunnel part is missing something to be a very brilliant demo

arrogance is bliss.
i didn't like it. bad gfx, design and music too.
this is one of my favorite recent demos, and goes in my list of all-time favorites.
just rocks!
it's smooth, energetic and music is perfect.

for some (like me) who can't catch some parts of the lyrics (thanks to Sir Garbagetruck ... :)):

a couple of flaws in the lyrics, correct version follows:
back once again in control of the bass
it's o d d in you motherfucking face
we're the scene messiah and here's the revelation:
2003 odd world domination
we're back (+back with delays)
mad props out to deux ex machina

I think "building up pretension" is more appropriate. :)

I think it's: while l f odd is building up the attention.
Also, sounds like all other crews consist only of lamers is something with real lamers in the end. All other crews consist of real lamers maybe?
Also, I think we should not really care ;)

Oh, and of course drop the "the" in front of attention.

Really Impressiv - Great Demo and ultimate Beat-filled-agressive-soundtrack - Rules :)
:D Very nice!
Hardly nothing new, BUT. Nice progressive Soundtrack which pushes the Demo straight forward. The agressive lyrics fit the demo very well. Go on ODD.!
Marry Me Odd!
You guys should really listen to lug00ber when it comes to the lyrics. I wan't a karaoke-version!

It says "failed to create rendertarget-texture" on my GeForce FX5900.
what, I didn't give this mad props? Sheet.
The excellent music and interesting design make this demo work despite rather average visuals. That also includes the 640 blobs, which simply do not look good.
Anyway, it is the overall impression that counts, so:

At the instant I've just heard a "different" maybe original version of the sound track on an internet radio in a mix, the main lyric was "This is the Sound of Underground". I don't understand what happened with that soundtrack :)
I can't watch:
"checking d3dcaps is for lamers"
"failed to create rendertarget-texture"
and then exit...
Hardware:
p4 2.8Ghz + 1Gb RAM + gFX 5200
Can you fix it? :(

As far as I can remember, it was a worthy winner :)

i'm pretty sure the lyrics are:
Miami is the home of the motherfuckin' bass,
Detroit motor city is always in the place,
Germany can't you see is where it all began,
Kraftwerk and Bambaata had a master plan,

From 'Frisco Bay to the U.K. electro pounds the ground,
B-boys prepare for battle 'cause

Cool music, the visuals are not very surprising although they are well synch'ed. Definitely, worth the download... :)
great attitude
i have no words for this
Not voted? Why? This is what we call "the holy shit". ;)
pretty cool. somehow this really kicks ass tho it is partly quite plain but with attitude. music is a remix of some commerical tune? anyway really kicks ass.. and yeah looks inspired by kewlers :) but kewleres style is kewl so :) *thumbs up*

mc vocODD ^_^
watched it again today, and its actually even better than i remembered!
The funny aggression makes it. That and the amusing metaball discussion in the comments, of course. (I assume the joke is that just like with BOBs, after a point the number of objects doesn't really matter because it doesn't look particularly good, and the contest just becomes about the number itself)
Rulez :)
Somehow this didn't hit me at all. And people compare it to Variform??
the best demo i've seen in past three days:)
music rulez!!
music rulez!!
Lost thumb.. uh, well this has the attidude. Track takes all the credit I'd say..
i took a screenshot and then counted the balls from it and there were actually only 639 of them!! :(
lithis: did you count also your balls ?-D 641 MEGABALLS !!!!1111
önssi: hmm you're right, that makes sense.. and it would also explain why scali doesn't see as many balls as everyone else!
kewl!
You say its the same group that makes "two step left two step right" demos? Can't believe.
@Gargaj: spot on, you rule!
rocks
music is an instant classic.
Error failed to create rendertarget-texture
well it never worked here on my computers but I have seen it at Inercia and it kicks
Has some weak and some really cool parts, and the music really rocks.

some ugly gfx, but apart from that it totally rulez
excelent song, average visuals
first part resembles kewlers' maliform and in the end gets a bit bored
the rest meets year 2000
some effects are really old and bring nothing new.

no thumb yet? hm. really ugly colors but a fucking great track and good flow. and an extra just for the bass.
oh yes!
No vote?! Demo is fairly good, not amazing, but the tune rocks so hard it's instant thumb up on that alone :)
i like it
coder's raw design, but nice demo after all :)
Not bad. :)
Tries to be variform so much yet it fails so miserably. Beginning is kinda cool but I hate the parts involving 3d flyby. The vocoders aren't my taste either, though the music is otherwise decent.
Cool demo! :)
yep

Yes.
O D D in your mutherfuckin face!!
Thumbs for the music alone.
massive tune.
like the attitude. doesn't make it on the visual side tho..track rocks!
Shit, I never gave this a thumb? For shame!
The Bomfunk MC's tune is cool :)

I need to yell because of these lyrics
What still works perfectly for me is the cut from "we eat your code raw" to the guy munching a burger.
quite nice
Entertaining
Catchy and juicy! Always keep coming back to this and its funny vibes. It just flows so smoothly through the whole show.
Missed thumb for the nice and already classic tune and vocoder, otherwise too 2Ks PC
Nice discovery (after years)
needs more blobs!
one of my favorites, great soundtrack! what's up with the credits "not to ephidrena"? (maybe better not ask but I presume there is a story there?)
