KK you've done a stunning job translating the soundtrack, lots of little details I picked out. Was really curious how this would sound when I heard about it and was pleasntly suprised. Great work. The demo is also rather bloody good :D

very well done. but it gets a bit repetitive in the end as the original had more lasery sync details and camera cuts to keep the visuals interesting ;)

Nice work on the music, and especially the "tunnel"-like scene is really good looking!

Minor issue is that linecount seems to be off sometimes, my TV did some rolling at a couple of places.

@djh0ffman:
This demo actually STARTED with a track.
I wondered how the intro "pings" on your track would sound on the VCS if the echo was done the standard tracker way (pack echo with Cxx's on single channel).
And then it occured that by some weird chance you play almost only the notes that can be played on the TIA chip (with errors within reasonable margins).
You can even mix it with the original track and it will sound quite right together (but the final version might have slightly different tempo).
Are you using VCS for your daily work, or what? :D

And having soundtrack port (at least the beginning) like this, I couldn't just resist to make a full demo. :)

I still wish I had more time for polishing the soundtrack, because in the end I still had 1kB of space for the audio and one free virtual channel (my VST/player has 4 of them) in the main part - quite an opportunity to add even more details. :)

@glafouk: My VST (and the replayer for that matter) has 4 virtual channels. Every time a primary channel plays at volume 0, the corresponding secondary channel kicks in. Carefully engineer your drums (3-frame kick, 1-frame hats, etc.) and it will sound just like a slight side-chaining.

@Sdw: Yes, the demo drops proper sync from time to time, but I didn't have time to fix that at the party.

Really surprised me at the party. Props for doing a "demake" that was actually entertaining, it's more miss than a hit with that. While a lot of similar fx has been done over the years, to me this felt like a true next milestone since 2012/13 when it comes to design/music/fx.

I think that there has been tons of cool stuff over the years of course.
While this easily lands in personal top3, I still have to point out that the design is not original so I guess there is still something to aim for :)
rulez added on the 2016-11-14 20:20:55 by oasiz oasiz
The code doesn't push any boundaries but is solid, and the music is a great remix. What's outstanding however is that the demo inherits the dynamic pace and flow of the original, and as a result we have a "modern" demo style on an 8-bit machine - which is just lovely. :)

Nice usage of VCS capabilities to emulate original effects, like the lasers.

Looks like YouTube will downconvert to 30 FPS anything that's not at least 720p, which mostly destroyed the laser effect (I animate two sets separately and switch them really fast).
Here is a link to the more proper capture.

However! I would cut one minute out between 2:07 to 3:07, it's getting pretty repetitive at this point. But to be fair, even this extended minute is kind of true to original, as it was also a little bit repetitive/boring ;)

@JTZ: Cxx is a ProTracker command for setting the note volume (where xx = 00..40, hexadecimal).
You start writing the pattern just with main notes as in example <A>. C40 means note here plays at full volume.
Then you simulate the first echo by placing quiter notes (example <B>) at fixed offset (2 steps, in this case), wherever possible.
Note at step 06 didn't get the echo, because a new note is masking it, but it's OK.
Remember to carry your echo onto the next pattern.
Then you repeat that again by adding the third echo bounce (as in example <C>), wherever possible.
If the echo delay & note sequence doesn't mask too much each other, you'll get a nice sounding echo effect that doesn't consume any extra channels. :)

Code: <A> <B> <C> 00 C40 C40 C40 01 --- --- --- 02 --- C18 C18 03 C40 C40 C40 04 --- --- C0C 05 --- C18 C18 06 C40 C40 C40 07 --- --- C0C 08 C40 C40 C40 09 --- --- --- 0A --- C18 C18 0B C40 C40 C40 0C --- --- C0C 0D --- C18 C18 0E C40 C40 C40 0F --- --- C0C

Definitely misses a lot of low end in the sound department, but I don't have too much negative to say other than that. Probably the most interesting 2600 demo after the wamma/trilobit stuff, though the ROM on this is almost an order of magnitude larger. Still while it's remake instead of codeporn this at least actually carries a solid concept. Far too rarely seen on the VCS, despite being shown possible about ten years ago already.

KK, is there some interactivity hidden in the demo? I noticed that you sometimes read SWCHA before the dancing silhouette animation.
added on the 2017-05-05 13:15:38 by JTZ JTZ
@JTZ: Not really. It's just a leftover from a development version, which initializes variable holding current joy state to later test when it's moved. But it's the only leftover (just checked) and doesn't affect anything later on. In the development version I used joys (actually keys on emulator) to edit 2 byte values controlling the effect variation. Naturally, in final version they are controlled by playing of the demo.

But I'm really amused by "I noticed" on your part! Nice find, and I'm really curious how you noticed that. :)

I am always interested into the code, and while looking for the occasional sync loss, I stumbled over the SWCHA access.
