took me too long to downscale the screenie so you beat me to it :P
Well it looks astonishing and is another very nice example why 8k rulez (as do you).

the water noise is a bit too pointy and the detuned lead sounds hurt my ears but nevertheless a nice 4k!

Great rendering, very nice geometry (sphere tracing and distance fields still, right?). Impressive amount of detail, haven't checked how the performance is yet :). Quite uneventful though, I was mostly waiting for it to just to end after the first minute. Quite bad music. I don't really mind GM that much but the song itself is no good, at all.

Great, solid prod!

Music is not my taste either, but I guess it is well made and this is what you feel.

Great rendering quality. Music is very difficult to listen to.

Alright! I like the look even though it leans a bit too much towards the teal-orange school of color grading :) The water is pretty nice, but the animation might have been a bit too fast.

Kudos for not going with off-the-shelf 4klang synth tekno.

Looks great but directionwise doesn't have the same appeal as Atrium :)

excellent intro with superb eff's and nice synth music
rulez added on the 2015-09-07 16:19:11 by unity1 unity1
I actually didn't think the music was painful.

Although what makes this is how it's color-graded. So what if it's a bit of a teal-orange - it looks good.

Good snare sound, but too agressive for the visuals and everything else about the music is just ugly.

Very nice visuals, but it gets boring very quickly, and the camera flies way too fast. Why hurry so much.

A lot to like here, and a lot to dislike.

music does not work/fit for me. it sounds too happy (maybe childish) with those high notes compared to the visuals. overall a weak thumbs up because it looks nice and has 8k.

KK you can always get yourself a musician and spend the new gained productive time on some even more awesome visuals instead =).
but if you really want to do it yourself this might be a good place to start?

KK:
IMHO melody is fine, however, some instruments are a bit strange (especially high-pitch thing near the end) and it feels out of tune (not sure why, some freq.based delay effect / too much freq.modulation?). Maybe it's easy to fix actually?
added on the 2015-09-07 21:54:25 by tomkh tomkh
To me the melody was not fine at all. It felt a little bit random and chaotic. The sounds were ugly and sometimes even out of tune. How is that even possible? And it didn't support the visuals very well.

Just make it sound nicer next time. How to make music suck less? Select a different musician, or a different audience, or something. I don't know. Or just do your own thing if you like it, and don't care about pouet comment crap.

KK:
practice..but that is not true always..
theres a big amount of luck also.
drop the melody and do arps in few chords..coders love that shit..

essentials:
chords
arps
baseline

add drums later. and keep em simple. nothing tells as fast as too much drum progression without other progression that you suck.

general midi is great way to learn how to make music.
with synths and plugins you can be blinded by nice sounds..

wysiwtf: Well, going 4klang is the last thing I'd want to do, especially knowing that I can write competing synth myself. Looks like I should boost priority of actually writing one to 11/10.

tomkh: Maybe some gm.dls sampler don't report correct tunning.

yzi: Getting different musician (than me) would probably work and I'd really like some coop some time, but being aspiring musician (in addition to being a coder) it's also a matter of self-improvement. And as beauty is in the eye (ear) of the beholder, opinions of the beholders themselves should probably somehow matter. ;)

1in10: Arps are always a safe bet. I did that three times (at least), but the melody is what is hardest to do.
added on the 2015-09-07 22:55:53 by KK KK
Maybe just try to have less elements and less stuff going on at the same time in the music next time. GM has not been explored too much in bigger intros.

Melody is important. Any catchy leading element that the listener can sing/rap/whistle/beatbox can be a melody, it doesn't have to have pitches necessarily.

Try to copy a song or a melody you like, or some parts of it. Leave something out, and change something. See what comes out, most probably it won't resemble the original very much.

ALLien Senses - Quantum Chaos (2007) [60fps]
Quantum Flame - 4k intro by KK/DMA
..both had melody
Quantum Core - 4k intro by KK/DMA

..all had progression that had a drop(arps and beat off) in a 2 minute track..
dont do drops on 2 minute tracks..
it gives you more length but doesn't work..
easily at least..

yeah..you are on the right track. only opinion that matters is your own.

I feel you, man ;-)
Composing good melody is very hard. I personally recommend listening to classical pieces and/or reading about "motive development", there are books / lots of resources about it. Although I'm probably better in theory than in practice :D

Philip Glass - The Photographer ( HQ)

..mainly arps..drops are more like 70s drops..with more material..not the void..

tomkh..theory is just that..theory..
what you should be looking is charged progressions..
some call em hooks..
some call em sigils..magic..propaganda..
same thing.
when doing music one should understand the importance of the link to the subconscious..

example..
charged words(hooks):
war
slave
nigger
hate
love
freedom
money
excellent
..etc..

chaos is your friend in art.

Not sure about that snare-sync to the object, feels like it reacts with a delay / latency.

Music felt like you fattened up the sound by lots of detuning, but went overboard with the detuning. Lost interest in the song and just focused on the visuals after a while.
added on the 2015-09-08 10:03:32 by distance distance
distance: Yeah, the problems with sync came to late to fix. I used simple PlaySound+timeGetTime which so far didn't make any problems, but this time smehow it varied from machine to machine a lot. Time to move to waveOut... and definitely a new synth for next prods.
added on the 2015-09-08 11:03:28 by KK KK
Visual side of things is impressive. I don't think the music is bad, it's just way below the average. Using GM standard won my sympathy, 'cos I spent some years producing MIDI audio for Java games and I'm perfectly aware of its constraints. Don't wanna sound harsh now, but I'm afraid asking people what's wrong with your music is simply not enough. Ofc the sincere feedback is valuable. But you have to FEEL the difference between good and bad music by yourself first. And it's clear to me that you don't feel it yet.
rulez added on the 2015-09-08 11:10:25 by jazzcat jazzcat
jazzcat: I didn't say that I think this music is good. In fact I felt it was so rushed I was even considering backing out of the compo for this very reason until Argasek told me it was ok (it was late in the party so he could have simply be drunk ;) ).

My personal opinion of this piece is that melody is barely okish, synth is crap, sounds would need a lot of polish and whole piece could really use some extra layer or two and better layout. I'm asking people for opinions because it's much more valuable input than "music sucks". That much I already knew from the start. ;)
added on the 2015-09-08 11:23:33 by KK KK
Why are you asking for ideas for improvement if you yourself think it sucks. First make something you think doesn't suck and then ask.
added on the 2015-09-08 11:35:15 by yzi yzi
What Gargaj said.

As for music feedback, I feel there are mainly two things wrong with it:
1. The orchestration is too thin to be really enjoyable. This is a common problem in 4k music.
2. The style is way off. Something slow and majestic would have suited the visuals much better.
added on the 2015-09-08 11:50:27 by Blueberry Blueberry
yzi: People are going to voice opinions anyway, so why not some meaningful ones. As for the last sentence: impossible. For everything I make I could come up with at least 10 reasons why it still sucks.

The music with it's xylophone lead sound turns this more into some technical display instead of an atmospheric experience. Notheless I can't thumb this down.
Nothing wrong with the synth, it sounds good and the visuals look good too. If instead of that melody you went with a more soundscape-ish approach, slow leads, lots of pads and just some hints of a melody here and there the music would have matched the visuals better. All in all an awesome job, keep it up :)

The visuals are 4x too fast. It's a shame, this could be epic.

Imagine the columns growing much slower with a bit camera shake and rumbles/debris/smoke, etc

Also the fractal thing in the second half could have looked terrific with the shader of the water, ... or maybe trying something "inception-ish".

Also it reminded me a lot of Sunr4y

KK: indeed I said it was OK, but I also pointed out at least two things I didn't like: melody (i.e. too dull, not going outside an octave) and lack of dynamics/punch. Who was drunk then, huh? ;)

Awesome rendering!
Like others said, making it slower, culminating with the central blob, would have filled more time without being boring (toward the end it tends on dragging a bit).
Continue working on your synth, much more valuable to learn to write synth than to learn using klang IMO (your older stuff sounded great btw). Also, relating to GM.DLS, IIRC the samples don't all have the same base note, so you might have to retune by hand.

Awesome! Top visual quality, nice geometry development and pacing. Music is ok, but sounds a little too much like early Amiga MODs to my ears. Paths seem a little linear sometimes, but nice overall.
