The 13-ball looks a bit odd to me (not enough room for sub-surface scattering, maybe?), and the entire thing is rather cliché. But still, nicely done; I love the bokeh.

nice shader. but the writer is the most stupid thing i've seen. i've slow hardware how am i supposed to render that out while trying to do other things? that thing allocates the frontbuffer and glitches af. heard offscreen somewhere before? next time deliver a standard full hd screenshot already with it. ;)

I have just upgraded the release archive with a 1080p screenshot.

Considering the tech: The image is generated using path tracing on the GPU. For the numbers, a texture is generated using a windows font. The scene is trivial and only made from spheres, positioned and rotated procedurally (I spent a few hours tracking down the proper seeds though). For shading, I use a combination of lambertian and a phong BSDFs with a physically not so accurate fresnel term :) For lighting, I use a procedural environment map, which is actually quite inefficient due to not using any kind of importance sampling (many rays hitting pitch black). The most "advanced" part is probably the simulation of the camera lens, which is done by tracing rays from the sensor through multiple spherical elements made from different materials (IOR) and different apertures. Using this lens system naturally results in a quite realistic DOF. The resulting image is then treated with a combination of gamma/exposure correction, desaturation, channel independent contrast and a hint of additional vignetting.

There is much room for improvements, but due to lack of time and spending the last few hours before the deadline tracking down a compiler bug in the NVidia GLSL compiler I was not able to go any further.
