AAhh.. Its always nice to see some demos with concept on amiga. This is a reallly cool one too. Whats that lowpass filter, it seems rather fast.. Do you use the bitplanes or do you just use chunkymode in few colours or something?

The woman in the screenshot moving to the beat was the best part for me.
rulez added on the 2004-06-02 13:10:27 by loaderror loaderror
The demo runs in a chunky mode with 256 shades of grey (not that we used any shades most of the time ;). The demo did turn out surprisingly fast for some parts, especially considering it's full C.

What compiler do you use on amiga? gcc or something else? I heard some rumours that gcc generates good 68K code, but Ive never tried to fiddle much around with it..
added on the 2004-06-03 01:50:17 by loaderror loaderror
loaderror: It's Sas/C for now. I've heard its approximately as good as GCC on 68k and was much easier to install. It has the usual tools such as make bundled so you don't have to go back to stone age ;v)
added on the 2004-06-03 08:08:35 by Marq Marq
Hmm.. I should get that then. Come to think of it I use both sas-make and sas-link now, so maybe I should get the compiler aswell and save myself some time in teh futare.

Ok, there are versions for pretty much every obscure OS out there, but how about porting it to a platform that people actually USE? ;)

Solaris and MorphOS are the latest ports available. Windows users are most welcome to watch the avi or try the dos version ;v)
(ok, there is a port underway but it needs further testing and is not any great priority)

What about a GBA port? Might not be impossible...
added on the 2004-07-16 13:15:43 by dairos dairos
Dairy: nothing's impossible, but this is a tough one. Uses quite a lot memory and some filters are CPU intensive. My guess is that GBA doesn't have the necessary juice. The source is available so anyone willing can give it a try...

I just watched on the gamepark and it is SO killer on that platform compared to the osX version I watched earlier. Maybe it's the way the greys work on the gp32 screen... all I know is it is just KILLER on gp32.
these mega-multi-platform demos are weak

respect that you managed it to port it to so many platforms, but the demo itself is not so good...

rootstyle: In my opinion your reasoning sounds plain stupid. Feel free to thumb down our other prods as well, since they are almost all multiplatform. Yessir, closed source Windows-only demos is something we desperately need.

The synced head was nice, but overall this reminds me too much of contemporary video art. I always feel ripped off after watching contemporary video art - not a big fan of weird for the sake of weird.

The feedback concering the credits of these prods is something that has bothered me for a while, so I'll reflect upon them here. Look at the comments here: Chrysler and Yellow Rose of Texas are being called "the best Fit prods ever", Marq "the best coder in Finland", people sending him emails saying he has "an eye for design". On the other hand, the folk I meet suppose I only wrote the music for Yellow Rose of Texas... To clarify things, I will write the correct credits for these two prods.

Chrysler: All the effects minus one, video clips, design and music sync by Neckfreak. Music by Roz. System programming and additional effects (cogs, a filter) by Marq. Moving average filter routine by Yzi. Overlay effect with scrollers by Pete.

Yellow Rose of Texas. Effect, design, music sync and music by Neckfreak. System programming and soft-synth by Marq.

The bottom line: artistically speaking these haven't been too much of collaborations, but instead solo prods of mine or Bandwagon, if you prefer (Yellow Rose entirely, Chrysler mostly). Marq has been an excellent system programmer and I'll give him credit for that, but it is also true that I worked my ass off being a "contemporary video artist" and trying the concepts for my effects at several VJ'ing gigs. I admit this more or less unjust division of work wasn't preplanned, but instead I took over the projects that wouldn't have been finished had I not done so (this especially applies to Chrysler). Still, people seem to enjoy the end results. Surely it may be I'm a lousy designer and Yellow Rose and Chrysler happened purely by accident, but still, they are accidents of mine and I deserve the credit at least for that :)

It's interesting, but i don't rate it so high.
The most important aspect is the really cool multiplatform availability.
Nice to watch, anyway.

Very little fame we have and still difficulties dividing it... To complete the credits most of the boring porting, packaging and bug fixing has been done by me -- not really the kind of responsibility anyone wants ;v)

Was pretty nice, the music was cool, as well as the filters... but feels like it could use some more work. Still, thumb up for the weird atmosphere and maximum portability.

Really a surprising show. I like this black & white style which dominates the whole time. The (ab)used video material was taken from from a movie out of the 50s, which gives the demo a very special atmosphere. Wow, four coders worked on this demo, quite a lot. I enjoyed the music from Roz of Rno most. Have a look at it, very good and unusual demoscene art.
