micksam7: it should work without problems.
I actually doubt that it would run correctly on an NTSC machines, as they have quite a bit less cycles available in the non-display area.

Sdw: yes, You're right, it loses synchro on the bottom of the screen on Timex Sinclair 1000 but still the errors are not very visible and it still looks OK. Especially that ZX81/TS users will be happy to have any new demo at all, heheh. :)

Actually, it looks rather excellent on a timex 1000 :) A few errors here and there, but only at the end of each effect, it also runs about half the speed but still is more than watchable.

Hi SDW, this is absolutely nice. How the heck did you do this. I remember my ZX 81 (I soldered it together myself - also the reason why it died years later ;-) could read charset data only from the ROM, but also the CPU was involved somehow. Seems you managed to override what the CPU does. Great job!

JAC: You're correct that on the ZX81 the CPU is responsible for outputting the gfx aswell, meaning that as soon as you have something onscreen, the CPU is occupied by that, so once you have gfx on the screen, the only available CPU time is in the blank area below and above the screen.
You're also correct that the ZX81 can only display ROM (unless you solder in some mods = cheating). But by selecting the right ROM area, and overriding the video-output routine with your own code that fetches a new char every rasterline routine you can get a 256x192 pixels pseudo-hires mode. That has been known since the early days of the ZX81.
However, trying to update 32x192 bytes every frame when the only free cpu time is in the border is not doable of course.
The new invention (wohoo, I always wanted to do a world-first!) in this demo is that with some more trickery I get a mode where I can pick from predefined 256x1 pixels lines, and thus only need to update 192 bytes per frame to get these effects running full framerate.
