too bad pouet don't allow more than two groups.

oh, and this demo wouldn't have existed without walter kluge

Not quite as good as the winner, but still, a nice effort. The whole "software engine" idea is a bit above my head. Hello, how about using the available hardware for nice, smooth effects like in xenon?

...yeah, right. Great demo!

this is very 90s - even the music :-D

some of the samples from the music sounds familiar, i just can't place it (in particular the music with the sphereblob and greetings).
this is a good demo.
but the end comes a bit too abrupt i think.
still a rulez tho.

macaw: indeed some parts of the music finds dejavuish.. no idea how tho ;/

the demo is ok, nothing new, but then again who would expect anything *new* from a software demo ;-)

i voted to many thumbs up the last days on pouet so i guess i can return and thumb this one once my quota is ok again .. need to find some bad prods.. go on razor hurry up release some more!

Indeed, this looks so '97, the huge pixels were hard on my eyes...

but it's nicely designed, it has good artwork, the 3d engine seems solid and the music rocks!

LOL stefan :-)

This was pretty decent. Software, seen-before stuff, but nicely put together. Ran at good framerates too.

I like framerates.

Framerates like me.

macaw&stefan: yeah i agree.. the music was awfully familiar at some parts.. maybe from some old byterapers or doomsday demo? hm, never mind.

Great demo tho, thumbs up.
rulez added on the 2002-10-17 04:52:13 by a_lee_n a_lee_n
I wholeheartedly second the opinion about the smart use of typography. The rest was more like "let's throw in everything we have and then synch and blur and have fun". Well, such are most of the 90's classic, so I won't complain.. 8)

didn't want to run in fullscreen mode. crashed after about a minute in windowed mode.. (200MHz MMX, voodoo3, win98)
What i managed to see/hear was quite cool anyways.

I don't know, I definitely HAD speed problems on my Athlon 1GHz here, 320x240 software engines just aren't supposed to run in under 30fps nowadays, sorry.

And I also had that deja-vu feeling... I think those sound effets at the beginning reminded me of Dune's SuperTV soundtrack or something

Anyway, an ok demo. To seen before and much too 1998 to give it a "rulez", but solid anyway.
added on the 2002-10-17 11:29:32 by kb_ kb_
great design, music, graphics... but get a decent coder! THIS IS LOOKS LIKE A DEMO FROM 5 YEARS AGO AND IT DOESN'T RUN 1 KAZILLION FPS ON MY P3/450 !! WHAT DID YOU WRITE THOSE POLYROUTINES WITH? BUTTER? SHAME SHAME !
added on the 2002-10-17 11:38:15 by Inopia Inopia
i guess it's some bug, maybe in the ddraw code. since my p3-866 server seems to pull it over 60fps at all times.
added on the 2002-10-17 12:12:53 by superplek superplek
Actually this one reminds me a lot of some certain Haujobb intros done back in -99. :) Fun to watch for once, could've been a chart hit 3-4 years ago. Now it doesn't seem that interesting anymore.

Pretty cool demo. Amenbeat in the music gives it even more 90s feeling :)
rulez added on the 2002-10-17 16:51:34 by teel teel
nothing really fancy, but not offensively crap either. :)

slow radial blur though, I'm sure Inopia has a thing or two to say about that.
added on the 2002-10-17 16:53:35 by sagacity sagacity
okay, first of all... this demo has been reported to run nice at ~500 mhz. There might be some bugs making it run slow on some computers, not that I can think of any good reasons, except that I didnt spend a lot of time optimizing the polyfillers, and some of the scenes also contain a lot of hidden faces (the motionblur-room, ie).

Second of all, I run the radialblur twice to get a smoother look, and since both passes are subpixelaccurate, it requres a lot of memory-access. (but, hey, most people have >500 mhz, and decent RAM (my laptop has ram slow as hell, and that was the machine it was coded at)) This demo was also a real hurry-job.

kb: this demo i a HELL lot faster than sleepless (at least at both my machines), and it even contains MORE than just a 3dengine, so shut it.

My next software-demo will proabebly run at a higher resolution, though.
added on the 2002-10-17 17:21:49 by kusma kusma
okay demo. synch and music was the best.
nice sync and nice music.
and cool blur effect.
good one!!!
rulez added on the 2002-10-17 18:10:40 by got got
kusma: "so shut it" ? I didn't code the Sleepless engine, nor did I ever compare your demo to sleepless. Next time if you try to flame around, please not as cheap, thanks.

sucks on my Win98/AMD/GF4200 and page faults after 1 minute ....

Everything looks and sounds like it was recycled from a collection of demos from the mid 90s.

The thumb down is for the chunky gfx display.

my flames are better than kusmas (tm) (r) (c) 2002.
Crashed midway through, and scaled my desktop wallpaper to 320x240! I guess that's a cool demo trick. :)

phoenix: yes, it's the magic forgetting-to-delete-the-windowclass-trick. pretty neat, huh?

Btw, I would like to get some more info from you guys who experienced crashes, i would like to get a chance to fix it :P
added on the 2002-10-18 02:28:31 by kusma kusma
I like it alot, great 90s feeling (and not necessary the usual, overrated "oldschool" thang). In a way, the low resolution has a lot of appeal to me. Nice gfx btw =)

well done kusma and folks! A great demo that absolutely should have won at Norvegia.
but, i've seen better prods from you earlier :).

Latest directx: check (unless you count dx9 beta as "latest")

Latest drivers: no check (using 22.50 on a GF2.. a newer 2x driver might help me, but a 3x driver probably won't and I'm not sure a 4x one will even work)

Win2000: definitely no check. Win98 here.

I don't quite remember the exact part it ended on, will have to watch it again at home for that.

The soft effects are very nicely done and run smooth. Nice design. I am not sure if it crashed in the middle in an image coming showing up from the radiul blur, or it was the end of the demo. I will test it home, I don't trust this computer here :P

Great stuff. Probably the excess demo I like the most. It has that 90s feeling. Except for that prestekrage. What the hell is that prestekrage doing in there? Id rather have Walter Kluge rotating on all three axises than a prestekrage.

It smells like software, yes it is ! The tune is not original for a penny but I like it anyway, upgrade your sounds bank :). Cool blur effects everywhere, specially when cross fading it to a picture. Don't really like the end though, nothign compared to the pretty dark effects of the beginning.
