the type of tune that makes me still love cracktros!

(irokos: thanks for the future hosting ;)

Well I have to disagree with you there Zest, personally finding the tune quite horrible.

In fact I think the whole intro is quite horrible.

It looks like a qbasic demo or something. And that's the only good thing about it.

i liked the tune.....but i wanted to skip the intro way too fast by clicking left mouse button.

means: yes i felt like i felt 19 years ago, but
in 89 that intro wouldnt be rated positive either.

you guys can do better. so please do.
Thank you in advance.

nostalgic cracktro, it's well done. But still no thumb
Thumb up for every cracktro these days.... thumb down for people uploading them to the pouet zoo.

alpha1: pouet is to be an exhaustive database of scene executable productions ; just don't take its dumb thumb system too seriously.

Zest: You know what kind of "thumbdown" actions are happening here if you upload a prod like this ... so why dont you just visit the other intro related site which name I dont want to mention here to upload your stuff?
added on the 2008-10-17 12:10:14 by aLpHa oNe aLpHa oNe
cracktros are a non-shameful part of the scene and thus of pouet, despise some negative opinions around.

and could it be that cracktros that don't suck out loud might actually get more positive feedback...

Yeah, let's delete all the crack intros from the db *sigh*... If the intro is lousy, it will get thumb downs. If it's good, it will get thumb ups (check certain crack intros coded by Hitchhikr f.e.). As simple as that.

Talking about graphical effects... crackintros never came close to actual demos in the 90's, so why do they have to now? The Amiga also had more power then a simple sinescroll would need but still we all loved 'em back then and nobody complained about it, sayin "Ooooh, I could code that scroll on C64, what a lame code for 68000!". A crackintro is not a demo, easy as that, it carries a little message and does not need any hardcore effects. And if it does, its okay, and if its only a black screen with a text, its also okay (not for this platform here of course). Hitchhikr's or Keops "intros" are for sure a 'must see' but their coding talent may not become the standard for a cracktro coder nowadays, otherwise we will have to wait until groups like Farbrausch start to code cracktros and I can't imagine that this will ever happen.

i havent seen the intro, but i can imagine how it looks.

while discussing the why's that go into the making of a cracktro like this, please consider the following: When looking at the screenshot, you see the classical elements of an early amiga intro: the sine scroller, the starfield, the wireframe 3d. Notice that all these things were shaped by the hardware requirements of the amiga (or similar).

So every time I see such a production on a PC, I can't help but asking "WHHYYYYyyyy!???". The difference between introcoders now and then is among other things that now they seem to be lost in a jungle of design choices and they go back and copy design that were dictated more or less by the need to show off hardware from the 80s. And I say "design choices" because it is obvious that they are not trying to show off technical capabilities anymore.

If you think of it this way, it all seems very unnatural.

guys pls go on with your really interesting thinking about cracktros (for once!) in the http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=5734 instead of these comments :)

Ahh oldskool!
rulez added on the 2008-10-17 16:16:53 by Emod Emod
Hyde, i think there is quite a bit more to it than just that easy answer of yours.

The pirate scene seem a little lost these days from my point of view. Those groups who find time to include cracktros, are some of the same people that used to be really active in the good old days with C64 and Amiga's.

It's a quite simple to turn to your past and roots, because it was at those times you really had fun. Just look at demo groups like Rebels, Brainstorm and TRSI. Quite a few of their productions

looks and feel the same. Basicially it's the same routines, ideas and graphic styles. Why revive those groups, when you got nothing really excellent to offer?

Just take a look at Kefrens, Polka Brothers, Scoopex and some other groups, why rebuild these groups? Well the answer is quite simple, because the guys behind these groups remember the good times they used to have and for the most people, that's why they return back to the scene.

Which again makes you wonder why the same people don't build a new group? I presume you can answer that question yourself.

I agree that the cracktros of today, could use a facelift, but then again many demos could need the same. Just because we write 2008, then things wont necessarily have to be better than the past.
rulez added on the 2008-10-17 17:34:10 by Enzymer Enzymer
enzymer: the thing is, some of the guys who made cracktros back in the late 80s/ early 90s did bring something new to the table, they had ideas about design and so on. some of those guys had talent, and wouldnt be seen dead pulling out the same thing 20 years later.
thats the problem with nostalgia - when it simply copies the superficial look and sound, but completely loses the spirit and the point of the originals.
added on the 2008-10-17 18:58:10 by smash smash
True to a certain point, but back then we had tons of bad cracktros too.

Another point is that doing Melon Dezign style today, just don't cut it.

The big question is, can and will someone help the crack groups of today, so we can get the "cracktro" of all times?

Which leads to more questions, do we really need to see cracktros being reinvented or can they be reinvented?

What about the demoscene?

I mean, after the first ribbon demos, then it got so mass over used, so much that it bored me to death.

Talk about innovation in the cracktro areas, when the most innovative in the demoscene these days, is size and engine optimation.
added on the 2008-10-17 19:48:19 by Enzymer Enzymer
Enzymer: the problem (to my eyes) is that cracktros did innovate in the 2000s, for example some 3d-accelerated Class ones were pretty nice, and then hitch did bring a shiny newskool+oldschool mix flavor, but now it seems to be only about nostalgic remakes...
added on the 2008-10-17 20:15:34 by Zest Zest
whoever still fancies doing cracktros these days should just get a fucking clue that this pseudo-retro crap only makes them (plus whatever crackgroup they release for) look bad rather than whatever they possibly intended with the initiative ...

Feels very much like a cracktro from the late 80's. It makes me feel happy even thought it dosn't keep todas standards. I would give it a piggy but I can't 'cos it makes me happy.
rulez added on the 2008-10-17 21:15:59 by Frost Frost
Enzymer: Sure, I know what you mean, and you do of course answer my (rethorical) question. My point was to put pseudo-retro intros like this in a bad light by pointing out the backwardness of the whole business.

Btw, you could make the same argument for the 1k or 4k-intros out there today: Before, there was a good reason for making small sized demos and intros: bootblock intros _had to_ fit the bootblock and making a demo with filesize greater than two floppies meant that the poor swappers had to double their expenses.

So why copy the old style of making size restricted prods when there is no limit left? I am saying this to compare two (unnatural) categories of demos that have survived to this day. The difference between the two is that the latter category has seen exceptional innovation and growth, while the cractro category has not. Like Smash says, they should be ashamed!

The intersection of "friends living in Oslo" and "people talented in the art of demomaking" is a small set in my case :)
