This was a very nice surprise for us all, I think. Totally awesome, if not to be nominated as "demo of the year"?(!) <3<3

OK. I'm in IRIS, but since I had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of this demo, I am going to thumb up anyway.

I am so happy Dr. Doom is getting the recognition he deserves for being an awesome coder, and I'm so proud of what my fellow groupmembers have created. I'm also so proud we beat TBL ;-)

I AM SO FUCKING PISSED OFF I COULDN'T MAKE IT TO BP TO SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN.

Holy shit.

This one is a great demo. Really. I love it. Unfortuately it's clear that only Ephidrena's unusual style, and because people expected more from TBL made it to win, because it has nothing really extra in it. But still it's a deserved victory with a very nice stuff.
rulez added on the 2006-04-19 14:45:25 by Charlie Charlie
The download link has been changed to point to a finished version of the demo that runs with 25mb of RAM and is more compatible with UAE.

Also, an .avi will be available around this weekend. Sorry that it can't be sooner, it's the BP organizers who're doing this from native Amiga HW, we don't have the HW for it.

Oh, and since I wasn't involved in this production, yadda, yadda, I am also going to thumb it up, because I honestly think it was the best demo released. Hopefully we will get even stronger competition next year, and then we'll see what happens :)

Greets to all we met at BP - it was a great party!

iris did a good job on this one, but it still leaves me kinda empty. I guess chicks and catchy music don't make a good demo for me anymore, and some of the animation work is overly ambitious (resulting in bad walkcycles etc. much the same problem that I see in loonies & scarab demos).

Thumb up and massive respect for the graphics. The PC scene could learn something from this as they're all totally lacking in the graphics department.

Thumbs up for the music and the animation of the doll.

However, the demo is really just typical of what we've come to see in all amiga demos...just chunky, low pologon 3d fly bys juddering along. That's no insult to Doom but if all you're doing is fly bys, why not choose hardware that can handle them?

It must also be real frustrating for Amiga owners when they have more compatability problems than PC owners running Winuae!

Sorry to rant, but this demo is a very good display of talent! After the eurochart and this demo, I'm a Doom groupie!

Quote:

juddering along

Actually, this demo is very fast and smooth on real hardware.

Quote:

Actually, it runs nicely on most real Amigas, only a few people are experiencing problems.

Let's be honest : being that it _requires_ 060/50, it won't even start on most real Amigas...
Parapete: Hmm, I think almost 95% of the remaining Amiga Sceners have 060/50 machines. ;)
added on the 2006-04-24 13:38:17 by StingRay StingRay
Actually, some people reported it ran OK on their 040... dunno how they managed it ;-)

I guess I meant most people with an 060, which is most people still in the Amiga scene. Considering the compo machine was an 060 based Amiga, I don't think its unreasonable to write for that platform.

rulez added on the 2006-04-24 19:35:17 by Cosmocat Cosmocat
If you have trouble getting the demo to work on UAE, just try to increase frameskip in the UAE settings. That did the trick for me. :)

Yes! For the first time I really cheered an iRiS demo! Dr. Doom: you have amazing skills, and I know you want to show it off! I hope to see you on the top rank next year in a really hard compo (if TBL manage to do the graphics, and eph manage to kick the music ;) )

Shane: Low-poly is relative, you know. ;)

I'm not proud of the use of 3D. Having no 3D graphician available I had to do all that myself in 3DS, which I've never even tried before. Animation is HARD, i tell you. In the end I think it's not completely out of taste, but I'll do better next time.

The code is another matter. It's not "just" a fly-by. It's extremely high-poly in Amiga terms, considering the framerate, and although the rendering is straightforward perspective texturemapping, it uses a lot of novel techniques for data management, which is why it's fast.

About the UAE problems: yeah, try to adjust frameskip etc. UAE will have to match 060 speed constantly which apparently it sometimes can't. Also, if you get flickering, I don't care. I spent so many hours trying to work out why it does that in UAE sometimes. In the end I had to conclude that UAE's raster simulation is fucked up. I already made a lot of sacrifices because of UAE's faulty FPU emulation, and I'm fed up. If nothing helps, watch the video capture.

For real Amiga problems, I can only repeat that it's an 060 demo. I'm sorry and I might release an 040 version with reduced music quality etc., but I'd also much rather focus on the next demo.

If it won't run on your 060, try a clean boot without all kinds of junk like oxypatcher etc., installed. Just setpatch.

I'd thumb myself up (why, for the bubbles, of course) but ultimately Ephidrena should've won.

Doom: I confess I just wanna see you on the PC scene where you can show the full potential of your skills and not be held back by Amiga limitations!
Shane: go away! Doom shows his talents on the Amiga and it's fine that way!

Hah, Doom will never go PC - He'd rather die, or just leave the Amiga scene dishonourably.

Just so you know. ;)

Really nice stuff. Great graphics, tune was good, and there's obviously some really good code in there. Only downside for me was that it somehow didn't fit together enough to make a great overall package.. it lacked something, but I don't know what.

I really wish i still had an amiga capable of running things like this.. maybe i'll look out for an 060 card for my a1200 some time.

the most enjoyable amiga prod from the compo imho. also shows that 2d screens are not dead. the 3d accuracy is not as high as tbl's engine in some areas.. but anyway, the naked chick was pretty fluent, cool stuff. also, this demo feels solid and well-produced.

Heh. THANK YOU. There ARE 2D effects in Kilofix. Also shitloads of 2D graphics.

Anyway, even a straightforward 3D flyby is really tricky stuff on the Amiga. All software rendering, you know.
added on the 2006-05-15 23:58:26 by doomdoom doomdoom
Doom is correct, you can't compare 3D done on a Classic Amiga with the 3D done on a PC. The level of knowledge required to program a s/w 3D engine on an Amiga would practically fry the brains of your average PC 3D coder who uses DX or the OpenGL APIs. lol.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this demo Doom, well done! I think you're also the only good coder I've come across who's also a good pixel artist...that's a rare talent-combo there ;) We're all used to seeing coders who are cool at music (Laxity/Desert Dream for example) but coder-art usually leaves a lot to be desired! :) You seem to be highly skilled at both.

One of those demos no matter how many times you see it, nothing sticks to your mind. Nothing of interest for me effects or content-wise in general, and scores quite low for me as far as audiovisuals go.
