one of the nicest demos in the compo...
rulez added on the 2005-07-31 03:34:44 by dipswitch
Very nice, in your face. Timing and aggressive camera angles rock. A definite winner.
Another kickass demo from Portal, what more is there to say really.. attitude, pace, soundtrack, modelling, code is all of the highest order. Hope this one wins.
Crashed not long after the "pierced screen" scene on my hardware, saw the entire thing on asmtv during the night though.

Very nice. My personal favourite in the compo.
very well done, great visuals, great music, but.. oh! an error on the best part (robot djing).. :( Also, looked great on the streaming but on my computer.. It needs to be a little bit more crispy!
Great colormanagement. Black, yellow, red. Works for me and keeps the demo's flow constant. Also neat 3D objects.
Should win. One of the few demos at asm that were not superboring.
nice
the way it should be made.
yeah, I like this style, one of my favourites of this year's asm demo compo.
Only PS 2.0 demo, waiting for DiVX......
great colors. unusual to mix hiphop still with industrial like objects.. nicely done
Looked like your previous demo (which looked like your previous demo (which looked like your previous demo)) but still good anyway (due to the superb modelling work).
Btw, it displays some messages about failed pbuffer release near the end.

really nice one.
Too messy and no direction at all. Sorry, too much of the same,
some nice stuff in here
crashes after some time at line 472 in pBuffer.cpp :)

Lovely mess and beautiful direction. Please make more like this and NOT like ASD (:
yeah, nice demo. but it seems like your code has problems to release the pbuffer ;) (same problem as ile)
waiting for the final. nevertheless, my favourite from the compo. Should have won ;)

A bit flybyish, and the scratch robot was something of an anticlimax.. But with those visuals, music and direction I forgive you ;)
<3
the usual but nice portal process style. the scratch part is awesome and i just love the music.
crashes but still kickass
coool
should've been second 8)
Preety cool textures, models and shadows, but I found it kinda boring. The spherize effect on the screens was fun to see ;)
Not my cup of tea at all. It's a bit flybyish and looked a lot better on the big screen, the music has a nice beat into it but I don't like the scratches at all, and it crashes with a PBuffer release error and I had to kill it with ctrl+alt+del.
hmm...weird. I have yet to see it crash. I've run it several times on my P4 machine and it always runs fine.
P4 3.2, i875P chipset, 6600GT and 1gb ram.
P4 3.2, i875P chipset, 6600GT and 1gb ram.
My favourite from the demo compo
Crashed in the middle on my home PC too. After a bugfix, this will still be a killer demo, although this looked a bit better on big screen... ;)
should have won! i want to watch it over and over again. awesome soundtrack and cool visuals.
Nice!
But i noticed some bad aliasing and strangely poor color resolution for textures, resulting in flat tinted zones looking like non dithered 8bit textures ;)
Maybe it's my laptops card (mobility radeon 9700).
I guess the aliasing comes from the fact you dont give us possibility to select a more appropriate resolution... My laptops native is 1280x800 so if you force a 640x480 i guess i know why it looked so poor aliasingwise;)
Anyway, lets also forget the pBuffer release problem that pops modal error dialog during the whole end of the demo (coz it only kills the end;)
All in all, it's got style, it's got work, and it's got coolness;) Thumb up !

Marvellous beat and rhythm, quite nice sync, too little of the robot scenes.
lovely stuff. Great direction, some of the robots really ruled. And i really liked that lofi look, it made it look more real (although i think AA would be a positive thing).
Really good looking on the big screen, with some fantastic modelling... But I am still waiting for a robot-less Portal Process demo...
direction/artwork/models ruled. i dig that robot-stuff very much. great big-beaty soundtrack.
btw: it still runs on my gf4 (a little jerky sometimes but still watchable)

best in teh compo.
uhmm great. cool as hell. models, tune, textures, and a FUCKING great camcontrol!!
Total ownage and supershaking music.
Cool models, cool direction, cool music. What more is there to say? Ruled the big scrizzle fo shizzle, my nizzle.
where are the video? thanx
Outstanding!!! I didn't expect it to run on my GeforceTI card, but it runs perfectly and looks fantastic!
With this and Iconoclast, the quality of demos has been raised. Good work!!

The soundtrack blew me away, awesome...
nice some scene design.
nice model.
nice music.
some glow fx was cool.
anyway good work.

crazy stuff with cool music. ironically titled "dont stop" it "did stop" between all scenes, however once you get your head around that it`s a very high quality production.
svok, the color banding feature is REALLY ugly. please remove it NOW :)
good stuff. started producing errormessages about failing to release some buffer though.
could it be that you are using a sample that also fatboy slim used in one song (didn't remember which one) on the 'on the floor at the butique'-album?!
or am i just mad?
or am i just mad?
damn, i wish you would make more effects in your demos, but i have to say that this time the roboot actually did something :)
Music is not very variated. Huge objects are impressive. To bad demo crashed at my p4 3,2ghz 1gb ram x700
/pp/portalsummer/src/base/pbuffer.cpp:472Pbuffer::release failed
just after the object which comes after those walls with graffiti on them.

yay. rocks.
vow!!!! very cool design and impressive music. This is the classic underground scene. ;) Good job!
the music<3
The demo with the style.
for the first half of this demo i really loved it. felt very fresh (even tho it's the same engine as before :)) - maybe the nice models/movements and the music did it, and the rendering looked really good. unfortunately as it went on it seemed to lose steam, the music got repetitive, so did the visuals, and the models seemed to get worse.
still, its like half a very very good demo. =)
still, its like half a very very good demo. =)
The best demo from this years Assembly, the only one that made me go "wow, now this is cool!".
Nice models/animations, and in some of the parts in the middle the rendering gets a certain quality that makes it look very "movie-like", I don't know if it is just because it is blurred just the proper amount or what, but it looks great.
The only small minus I can see is that the scratching robots movements doesn't seem to synch with the music.

You have to love the models, give me video! :D
the music is absolutely kickass!!
Yeah, it crashes on my other machine with the ATI card. Runs fine on my main PC that has the NVidia 6600GT.
but yes, this demo rocks. Aggressive cameras and music... the models are awesome and I like the part where the robot smacks the camera. Nice touch. :)

nice 3d-motion..
I quite liked the lo-fi effect, and I was enjoying it for a good few minutes, but in the end it started complaining about not being able to release the p-buffer (WinXP, cat5.7, radeon9500).
seems to crash at the same position on geforce4ti as it does on radeon9600, just that the messagebox doesn't appear...
however, cool demo if fixed.
however, cool demo if fixed.
at last music i love! :) cool mood
Lovely shit. My favourite from the compo.
gloom: oops :)
Absolutly *rulez*.
Cool objects/scenes,
even better post-processing effects,
and each scene is timed just right to not get boring :)
Kudos!

greble
I thumb this up but it's a weak one. Modelling and stuff is all great, even stunnig but.. I find it quite boring. It's more like an engine test than real demo to me.. or something ;)
I've noticed this in allmost every Portal Process production this far... still waiting for your great blow. You got the tools, use them god dammit! ;)

superious greeble usage. nice anyway but a bit difficult to enjoy at home because i don't have enough ram.
Some great parts and robot movements. :)
Not bad!
Doesn't crash anymore with the ATI fix, but runs about 0.5-5fps for 99% of the time. Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, I doubt it should be THIS slow :)
Great shadows, great shaders, great design. kinda slow @ gt6600, but i still love it!
great
rocks hardly
You guys rule!
the fix just makes it slow (probably 3 fps most of the time) on radeon9600xt 256mb.
Love the shadows!
I really like this one.
Really fresh & unusual 3d objects.
IMO atleast 100x better than the asm2005 winner.

HEY! vidcap!
Works fine now, x600pro. But I still wish the demo was better :)
except black strip in the top of the screen during whole demo all works fine
While I'm not a fan of the big beat scratchy voice sample stuff, it is used well here, and I would have been severely dissapointed if the robot didn't scratch along, too bad it's not really synched, that would have been perfect, but at least you tried...
This is compeltely about design, which it has in spades, well executed. Good jpb.

i would like to see this demo which looks good from the first impression until the ATI crash... Watching the demo with the ATI-fix is impossible. runs at 5fps.
Is a new ATI-fix in the pipeline?
Is a new ATI-fix in the pipeline?
all right! I've sent You a mail with explanation of shadowmapping bug on X cards:)
Just tested that temp_atifix. Now it works very smooth on my athlon 850mhz+9600pro.
just wondering...
do you use shadow maps in the ati version (looks somewhat less precise) and shadow-volumes for nvidia?
if so, what's the problem with volumes on ati?

4SVOK ok, maybe it is not a PS 2.0 only prod, but is still do not work here, this give me a message "ARB_shadow not supported". This message give me your previous demo Meet the biots too. I have a Hercules Radeon 9100. (same as Radeon 8500)
Music gets a bit boring after some time. Impressive rendering! Reminded me of Kasparov somehow... Works ok here on a Radeon9700Mobility with the ATI-fix.
Great demo. I just love the music and design. Video anywhere?
best in compo IMO
really really liked this demo in the compo. nice models, music and flow.
ati fix works fine on my r9600pro, catalyst 5.5 (yeah, i should probably update, but i don't care right now).
whatever you're exactly doing in terms of postprocessing, it seems to cost you several bits of color resolution. some scenes looked like there was only about 5 bits/component left.

where is the video already?
Maybe i am mistaken but i have seen many parts of this demo in a flash intro in the flashkit site... bite me the link...
\o/ A very nice production. :) Great models, great soundtrack, and a great overall look.
Very nice models, the shadows add a good realism.
saw it second time just a minute ago on the big screen at buenzli. this one actually does rock quite a big time! good stuff (tm)
i want my own set of ppechnics!
well 18mb is kinda huge, but for me the best demo of asm05 :)
teh best.
+ Has a great look to it. Nice postprocessing
+ Consistent glowing yellow colours all the way.
+ Not a single touch of Nehe in here.
+ The cameras and the look of the lower right scene.
+ The dj-robot and the grafitti-robot(upper right) looked like proper goasnekker robots.
+ Hiphop robot concept
+ Shadows
+ Ace music
+ Cool tags
- Some of the robots are a bit plugin-ish,
- Some of the scenes are a bit empty (black backgrounds are killing the scene in some parts here where maybe a few more particles or other action could have saved the scene again).
- Asm was one week to early.
Even if this is Portal Process umpth robot demo I still think they should make some more of them just to get every single thing right :) It is bloody great as it is, but had a chance of becoming ultimate if just a few more weeks was spent on it.

forgot thumbage
this should have been second place! ROCKZ!
Kicks ass! Everything fits perfectly
Style with good execution, nice ideas & very good soundtrack.
A little bit long & repetitive though and I didn't like the 2d artwork (looked somewhat unpolished)

.
simply awesome - best prod this year (so far).
although my radeon9700pro is yelling for a proper fix without a black bar at the top.

bar!!! r9800pro - same story
yeah!this is cool shit!
wtf, havent told this one rulez major ass yet. i suck.
this rulez major ass.
this rulez major ass.
best prod of the year imo! Excellent design, style and at least a bit of creativity. A bit long ; since the smurfing fenwick is the best fucking idea it should have ended just after it.
Just to say this reminds me the pump up the volume clip by maars in early 90's, on some parts.
The vector streetdance is just a fucking great idea.
The vector streetdance is just a fucking great idea.
Good one.
Video please, this one's incredibly slow on my comp, and yes, I have Nvidia.
Very cool. Unique!
FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINAL plz :)
This rocks so fucking hard. One of the few demos I liked this year. Auf die Fresse!
any chance of a divX version yet?
crashes? something like buffer release at some line 472 failing? is that usual?
the rest is awesome, tho.
the rest is awesome, tho.
rox.
runs absolutly fine with ati fix, 20+fps all the time on 9600xt, catalyst 5.9. final would be better, tho. but i take it like all the other broken final promises.

Crash here. X600 XT.
Kickass anyway. Like Fake Elektronik Lightshow, but this one looks way better.

more robots!
This seemed very good, though the crashing on ATI and that ultimate greed for memory made me feel this was hurried. Music was, as many have said, a good tribute to the now almost dead big-beat-sound.
This was really great!
still wont work on x800 pro.. any fixes planned? :/
Graphics are great, music fits perfectly. I can watch this over and over again.
finally managed to get a video by adding evil tweaks to kkapture
Brilliant stuff
INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i like it,, the kolor, handytex, the performing mechnicGuy, sophisticated anims etc,,but i just expect coming ppdemos someday that without any robots, coz demos are more than cool deforming modellings:p
killer demo
great 3D
great 3D
Machines of madness v2.0.
Fucking rocks!!! PPechnics!!! :D
hellfire, you are my fucking hero, thanks!
i like this.
@ hellfire.
just a slideshow on my x800xl, please DO fix it! :)
good one
=)
reference quality demo
sogar
I will never understand those people who give thumbs down just because of a platform choice.
How about trying to appreciate the actual work of sceners, which is what Pouet is about (among other things), instead of throwing shit at people because they use a technology you don't like or you don't understand?
I thought Pouet was about demoscene productions, not commercial products reviews...

oops, this was for http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=26574 of course, that will teach me to Pouet early in the morning :)
credible!
rulez of course!
always nice
This one is fantastic... Soundtrack and Visuals Rocks :) Nice Robots ;)
the rendering is amazing ! very very very nice demo
I love the look, and the music is absolutely excellent!
Feeling bad for having forgoten to comment on that one. Visuals, music, robots, my geek spirit is happy.
Mad props to ma robotic friendz!
strange that I havent commented this yet. one of mye very favorites! the music and the visuals simply rules!
I love the way the robots walk. They look like they're dancing to the awesome tune.
This is fucking awesome. I should have thumbed it ages ago. Mmmm. lovely!
+1
Great show! :)
One of my all-time favorites - That bottom-right scene in the screenie up there is my favorite from the demo.
I love your style !
Not my favorite one, but there is some great visuals.
And the scratcherbot! :D
And the scratcherbot! :D
Not my favourite style but too good for not giving it a thumb anyway!
Some nice 3d and direction in here! Unfortunately i missed the last few scenes on my Radeon HD2350 :(
So cool !
I love thats 'A day in a life'-like glitched/abstract models!
and works in linux =)
and works in linux =)
great demo, loved the transformer-like robots and the music.
Now I have hw to watch this in realtime. Good show, good modelling and neat synchro, perfectly fitting music
!
!!
Cool demo.
killer ! sorry for late-voting...dunno why !
Awesome. looking gewd, sounding kewl.
But is this 16bit? The textures look a bit strange sometimes. Also, I get a black screen at the end of the demo... some scenes work, then a black screen again...

awesome.
holy fucking shit
Rules.
dj-robot ftw
That's what I call "style" !
a true CLASSIC.
hmm, something is missing eventhough everything in the demo is quite good
that's some dope shit, nice models and rendering, love the soundtrack :)
Im still impresed about FAST volume shadows routine in this demo. It runs on an old pc with full framrate.
Cool!
Never stop scratching the bullet table
Nice gfx and music.
It's a DEMO.
dope!
Scratching Robots rule
still addictive!
still a top demo today. I miss portal process.
Wow this still looks excellent even today, for the most part. Really smart move to blur some of the scenes since it hides aliasing and other little annoyances. Same thing with the posterizing. Little things like this are what help immensely to make a demo not feel dated even after ten years, take a hint.
The first half is the real deal here though. The segment at 1:23 has some truly excellent angles that put the geometry into nice looking compositions that work particularly well with the harsh lighting. The part after this has some of the best camera direction I've ever seen in the scope of the scene. It's disortienting but all of the angles and ideas with the paths just work. I especially love the ones that are directly oriented with the object so that it's effectively just the environment that rotates!
The latter half is a bit of a mess though. The scenes just don't look quite as good and don't carry nearly as dynamic editing. I also find the camera paths that just stop mid air before the cut annoying. It's not exactly bad but nowhere near the quality of the first half.
Still, the first half of the demo is still quite possibly the best shit the scene has ever produced in this style. I'd even say it's quite competitive with some similar professional works.

Still very good.
Very nice indeed, great modeling and graphics and good soundtrack.
Great stuff, although it loses a bit of steam during the second half.
late thumb! superstylish prod
for me the audio and the visual didn't mix well but thumbs up for the song anyway
nice!
I miss those
@nytrik: same here. the music alone and wonderful gfx deserves additional thumb :)
Long time no watch. Still love it
Hah, I just watched this earlier this week! Has aged quite well in my opinion, good stuff.
This still rules yes. Cool UG scenes and fitting music, maybe one of best from gloom!
such a great demo
the broken glass effect & the robot scratching the LPs killed me :D nice
My micro mechanism thanks you!
