a bit different than previous sunflower demos again. very modern production. the music is cool, i love saxophone samples :)
runs a bit slow though

a cool demo, less 'sunflowerish' in style than their usual stuff. very well deserves that 4th place that taat somehow managed to get up to.

the music is certainly lovely work, great feeling. electronic filteredness made warm with sax. i want the album.

but the fx, they have a nice feel and colour but it gets somehow "messy".. just too much stuff blended together, nothing "to the foreground".
in wonder, it worked, there was always some focus, even if it was constantly changing. here there is rarely focus, and so it at times just looks like a huge mass of coloured lines. to me this is going too far on the idea of "style".

but sometimes, when it does work, its of course fabulous.

strange, the zip file is 16 Mb but in the archive it is another different demo!
i dont understand why another prod is put as bonus in the same zip file...

about energia : humm, classic new design technoid, not excellent, just classic and average
no excitation, no new emotions, just another good demo, nothing new
zone: the two demos in one archive was a mistake by the orgas i think

a great production with unique colors and a lot of action. i really like the transitions. a superb contrast to all these boring effect1-cut-effect2 demos.
ah. and the music is simply wonderful.

Yeh, it's nice.... still.... this demo has some nice bits, some really awful ones, and well.... We have seen the very same thing from them the last two years now. Different graphicians and color palettes don't hide that. The dog called Sunflower didn't learn any new tricks for a long time.

Tesla's a better ride. Period.
added on the 2001-08-29 02:07:23 by Shifter Shifter
i think tesla was dumb.

and I'm really surprised by the number of times i played energia so far since I didn't really got into it at assembly. The music is amazing, the layerwork gives a profusion of visual stimuli to watch, and the code is actually very very good. (man, it works on my crappy g200 ... that's a feat) Overall it may feel a bit too sunflowerish but I think the color scheme and effect selection has matured even more. I really like how wojtek married those 3d objects and abstract lines.

These new Sunflower prods are just so... empty. Meaningless. They leave no feelings or thoughts.

blah, like demos are made for evoking emotions in anyone. i wouldn't get the message anyway. i see it more as 'senseless' art, meaning that it's not made for any higher purpose except viewing pleasure, like all good art should be. i'm not really interested in the artists feelings mostly.
added on the 2001-09-08 01:38:07 by robotriot robotriot
when ppl start mumbling about 'feelings' and 'thoughts' in relation to demos i just see a spinning flat shaded cube in front of me with some pathetic poetry on top that tries to be sooo deep.

fuck pretentious wannabe 'art' shit. i just want some good proper headfuck to keep me entertained.

for me, good demos are sequences of metaphors. most of the time very obscure, or unintentional. i think there is beauty in energia's ones even if i can only guess their meaning.
added on the 2001-09-08 13:49:13 by _-_-__ _-_-__
I didn't mean that demos should be art movies or poems. Most of those wannabe-deep demos are rather lame and ridiculous. But still, a product of art should leave the watcher thinking even something. Something other than "Hmm, finally it ended, should I watch tv or play games?" Otherwise you can just look at the writings of a milk carton.

Maybe this prod meant something to somebody. It just didn't for me. Sunflower really should stop repeating itself and raping people's 3D cards. Some of their older demos were great.

I'm probably going to get lots of flames.

Man, I haven't seen a demo run this slow since I tried Kasparov on my C64. Is it the coding, or is it my computer...? Considering how other productions run on my computer, I'd have to guess it's the coding.

VERY pleasant watch.
nice to see the crankshaft (yolk!) remix of rinneradio: helsinki (yup, sax-samples)
used somewhere, and to good effect. reeks of lack of time, but everyone runs out of time someday.

yes, there's a lot on the screen. no, i didn't even realize i wasn't seeing all of it with old displaydrivers.

Energia is cool! Great music,
great textures, this is never getting boring I must say. Some good old CNCD&TBL guys
have been delivered their work here. To my surprise there was also a quite average demo by TDT inside
the archive, maybe that explains the size? ;-)))
rulez added on the 2002-02-09 21:12:48 by ghandy ghandy
These kind of demos are indeed raping our 3d cards! :)
You can't even see the effects,. but perhaps I missed something here?

Something just about 15MBs. I open the folder with graphics and check the images to encounter unoptimized things. I usually do this! :)
There are BMPs and TGAs, big ones uncompressed,. this is crazy! I just downloaded pictview and tried to compress them in an unlosable format, like GIF (I don't see any PNG to try there too..) ,. and they have gone from 12MB to 1,5 MB!!! So many datas, can easilly compressed, why not do that, a big group like Sunflower?

I do it very often. HD and Inet are so big and fast for people with big PCs,. so it happens. This PC world is killing us,.. Anyways...
I just find it crazy..
added on the 2002-02-09 22:36:44 by Optimus Optimus
Er, Optimus, that's NOT Energia you're talking about, but the TDT demo which was accidentially included by the ASM organizers during packaging...

Oh yeah! What has a banana image to do with a sunflower demo?! ;P

Sorry Sunflower..

But I find it crazy,. I compressed Energia and it's 5,6MB Zipped file! I wrongly download 10MBs more just because of the ASM organizers mistakes!!! Ugh! Arggghhhh!!!

Anyways, crazy and phunny =)

Anybody will correct the mistake on the ftp I guess? I don't want to download 10 more useless MB for a wellknown demo..

I like this. After Wonder and Tesla, another multilayer killer from Sunflower. Keep it comin' fellahs!

(About the soundtrack: being a saxplayer, I kinda find the samples a little too rough to fit well to the rest, but it's gorgeous nonetheless.)

Thumbzz UP!!!

Above all else, this medium is one of technique and aesthetics. If you want some meaning, go become a philosopher. :) Watching this makes me more happy than many recent demos, I think it is the most well-formed example of Art in the demnoscene. When explaining what the scene is to arty friends, I always show this first, and they get it, giving comparisons to painting and composition etc. Gah. Enough - I should talk less

To sum up my and other peoples thoughts on this - This is definitely a mood demo. If you're right mood for it you'll just love it - if not, you might find it boring and repeatitive.

I see 'Energia' as a nice step towards more fluid and music video alike designing in demos. We're not in 1995 anymore when it was enough to show a torus on screen. We have 3d acceleration and more possibilities to accomplish almost whatever you can think of. Still I found it a shame most of the modern demos are in the same pit together with -95 torus demos.

Of course way of representing multiplex content may be "boring alpha layer crap" for you if it's also too complex for you to comprehend. Just try again on some other mood and then you'll perhaps like it. It's not all about understanding everything.

Thus one of the definite highlights from Asm2k1 (together with Gerbera). And yes, it's actually too complex for me to comprehend as well. :)

Sunflower style is quite weird and abstract. And has a lot of translucency and uncomprehensible stuff, so I usually can't remember how a Sunflower demo looks like. Usually I don't grab it and don't like it. However I think that it's so weird and diferrent. Sunflower demos are to demos, what progressive rock is to rock. I think..

Still. But thumbs up for the music,. yes that saxophone sound and the feeling starting to rule. I am hearing to the MP3 right now!

This is one of those demos you should watch a few times while really trying to look at what is happening on the screen.
Energia has a nice flow, very abstract and interesting objects and one of the best tunes I ever heard in a demo.
By the way, who said that this is art? I do not actually get why some people voted it down because of that reason.
Argueing whether a demo is art or not does not really make sense since everyone has his own definition of art.
In any case, for me this is fun to watch and this would be a good candidate for "coup de coeur" as it is somewhat different from other demos.

To be honest I always thought the visuals were horrible and the synching amazingly amateurish (and we're talking about a Sunflower demo here!). All those artifacts make my eyes bleed, just a couple of clever effects are the only exception.
On the other hand the tune is brilliant, the sax sends chills down my spine every time I watch this. Thumbs up for that.

Boring ugly flashing layer stuff. Wouldn't watch it a 2nd time. Don't like the music either.

It's ok, soft music with a undefined shape moving against a soft background. Average but relaxing. I'll give a thumbs up anyway.

One of my favourite demos ever. It's wonderful to put this on a big screen, and just stare at - try not to focus on individual details, just let it suck you in...
rulez added on the 2008-03-07 22:13:25 by nagato^ nagato^
due to the high level of detail it totally rocks on my 24inch widescreen monitor. looks really extremley nice, this demo really hasn't suffered by it's age.

Must admit I didn't quite get it the first time I watched it. But then I started coming back to this prod every once in a while and finally understood that this demo is very very special in its approach to the abstract form .

I never liked it, back in time and now also, not my style perhaps. I better liked last two Pulse demos in CNCD climax to achieve psychodelic effects than this, actually.

As said before the mood can be a key factor to this demo. After several runs I got the matching one, and saw a place where energy is born. Now I love it.
