- Likeable.

demo's will be larger than their capture
*demos
Also, that statement is only true in 1080p, and not in, say, 4k - which you can run the same demo in. - isokadded on the 2023-08-07 18:08:12
- demo Windows Still 93 by Divine Stylers & Style
- This is levels of awful I never thought was possible, in almost a hilarious way. There's just... so much, from using ChatGPT to produce "my first OpenGL tutorial", to the framerate, to the colors, the 10 minute length, to the fact that this tripe was made by groups called Divine STYLERS and STYLE and had credits for "art direction"... It's frankly impressively bad.

- demo Windows The Legend of Sisyphus by Andromeda Software Development [web]

Unfortunately crashes here about two thirds or so into the loading process (Radeon RX570).
"Worked" here on an RX580, but it definitely didn't look like it was supposed to and the music kept stuttering - which also happened on my NVIDIA PC where it looked correct.
I don't know.
There's a lot - A LOT - to love here: it is a compositing masterpiece and it definitely feels like one of those pieces where there's barely any demoscene influence detectable on it, and instead feels like a modern music video produced by a forward-thinking creative studio with a ton of resources - to have this made by a handful of people for a demo compo (i.e. running realtime) is both impressive and hopeful. ("Old guard" argument notwithstanding.)
But then the more it flashes the more my eyes get tired of it, and there's that midsection where it's basically the same content for a solid 3 minutes both visually and aurally, and it just feels like someone either ran out of ideas, or was perhaps too overconfident to trim it...? (And mind you, all those shots are fantastically composed - but it becomes an exercise in permutation rather than something progressing the experience.) And then out of nowhere a tunnel, because you can't get rid of ALL the demoscene cliches, apparently :(
Like, don't get me wrong, if this (and Mechasm - a demo that is, entertainingly, the diametric opposite of this) is the future of demos, sign me the fuck up - but kings are meant to be measured with the scale of kings, and to reach perfection it could've massively benefited from at the very least an editing pass. - rulezadded on the 2023-08-05 22:55:30

- It does precalc a lot when already in Linux.

- demo Nintendo 64 Supersensory Investigation "Point Borealis" by Macau Exports
- I always wondered what kind of imagery witch house would pair with - this isn't what I was expecting, but I think that's a good thing, cos my ideas were way less interesting than this.

- demo Windows Focused by Gaspode
- I don't know. It's very clean and very focused, but save the (excellent) scene from the screenshot, it feels more like a Wikipedia article of perspective tricks rather than something that uses that concept as a starting point that does something interesting with it. (Superliminal had the same problem tbh.)
The cube scene was a lot more like it, but then just as I was getting ready for the big wave of cool interesting content it ended :(
Like, make no mistake, it's still cool, but it was also 80% predictable. - rulezadded on the 2023-07-30 21:46:54

- Hoo boi, you really wanted to make this one memorable to the PC compo orga, did you :) "Sure, let's put an illegal character in the filename, that'll show-- wait what do you mean 'USB Soundcard'?"
Seriously though, I love the intro, it's the weird pitchbendy unsettling audio that sells it for me. - rulezadded on the 2023-07-30 21:39:53
- demo Windows KAMAMAMACHEN by The Solaris Agency [web]
- This is the proverbial clowncar that crashed into a goldmine - it's awful, but it puts so much effort so confidently into being awful that you can't help to admire it. My favorite part is easily the bottle rolling back and forth in the boat.

- demo Windows Malum by Bitbendaz
- So after a bit of hex-editing, I finally got this (and the previous 3-4 demos) to run - hugs Stalvik :)
I'm bound to agree with cce, but at the same time I think this demo made me understand Bitbendaz a Bitbetter (hur hur), and I think it's best to view their work as "themed", rather than "genre work": they don't do The Thing, they use The Thing as set dressing for the classic demostyle - it's not "horror", it's "horror demo"; it's not "disco", it's "disco demo". It's like the difference between a horror film and a horror themed techno event or a horror themed birthday party: in the former case, the horror is the point - in the latter, the horror is just changing the flavor slightly, but it's never the core of the experience. (In this sense, Umbra was something of an outlier - that was proper genre work.)
There's pros and cons to this approach: it's always safe since it relies on the "demostyle" backbone to not stray away too much from what the audience expects, but of course you could also criticize it for that since it just cherry picks some of the things and never fully commits.
In this particular case, the craftsmanship on the audiovisual side was well done enough that it worked for me, at least. - rulezadded on the 2023-07-09 21:47:29
