Demos voted by coders?

category: general [glöplog]
like 95 % of demoparty voters are doom or cs players. How about coders only voting booths, where THE coders vote?

For example it is easy way to win next assembly 2006 pc demo section.
Techno music -> big objects -> good camera with good synch.

5 000 euros for your grp. Or how much they pay for the winner.

Robots,shadows,music, and a precalculated camera.

You'll win.

Coders-only voting booth? Hmm...

"Old effects. I coded something similar one year ago but didn't bother releasing it. This demo is lame because they ripped off my ideas."

"There are too many pictures in this demo, and not enough 3d scenes. Remove the 2d stuff and make the fly-by last at least twice as long. As for now this demo is crap."

"The music should sound more like Scooter. Lack of 4/4 power makes this demo suck. Also they should make it look more modern with cool truetype fonts instead of lame pixeled fonts."

"This demo can render level data from [new game]. No stupid logos and no boring pictures. It also has bloom! This demo rules!! P.S Amiga suxx, wtf no shaders lol"

You can't trust coder taste.

next up: only let politicians vote in public elections!

the problem with selecting a specific group of people to vote for a demo is that it will probably only be valuable to them, to satisfy as many people as possible, you will have to represent as many people as you can.

the real problem is friends voting for eachother or some kind of local antiheroes like metalvotze at bp05 :-)

and caradhraz, you have an excellent point.

At least it could be interesting to get votes by coders, votes by musicians, votes by gfx, ... And of course the sum of all votes are what bring victory like in political election. That's why a demo which wins is a demo which please the most people.

Allas this is also why displaying legos / girls and movies stars brings more votes that anything else: people and this include sceners are conditionned to buy / vote / taste by advertisement, if you get advantage of that you win: state of the art / Space balles , legomania / Doomsday, ... And yes this can be really annoying for coders who have spend hours to do a technical show only real expert can understand while they are beaten by a fucking lame media thing...

and that's called 'public voting' and has a lot of people bitching...

Can anyone remind me why parties switched from having a jury vote to doing public votes? I guess it's more fun with a public vote, but I always found it a bit unfair.

I guess this topic has been discussed 1000 times, so please feel free to just ignore this post or link the relevant thread. I am not trying to engage in a long discussion.

I just looked at the assembly'04 results

1st obsoleet
2nd planet risk
3rd moped
4th come clean
5th we cell

I feel so sorry for kewlers. I think the public votes screwed them good at that party.

yea, because an almost entirely sceners audience sure has a lot more voting ability than a gamer audience. bp2004, anyone?

anyway, we have the scene.org awards, that's jury-based voting. (and loads of people hate those results, too.)

smash: bp2004 was a 'scener' audience vs a 'german' audience :D

People are never fucking happy about results, if there are not one or two releases standing out to win (what happens most of the time anyway) the results will always be borked. It's the law of voting!

And why, exactly, is it desirable to satisfy as many people as possible? Britney Spears is probably perfect in that regard.

I've badly explained myself: it's great or at least could be interesting to get statistics to know who have voted for what. Of course vote should and IMHO must remain secret till the vote has been done but for demomakers that can be interesting to know what type of voters vote for what. But I'm sure coders with their analytical mind have yet understood that if an audience is made of "lamers" aka non really techy aware ppl then a girl dancing show will provide far far far more votes than anything else (and in this very special case, the demo can also be great technicaly speaking). On another kind of party, where the audience is full of scene addicts and coders minded ppl, it's obvious that a technical show will have far far far better chance to get votes.

The trick is to be good / excellent on both parts so this please everybody and get vote whatever may happen. But it's harder.

Whatever I believe also in truly hidden vote: this way demomakers don't make things for getting votes but instead focus on their show whatever ppl can think about it and this is true art and freedom in art making.

You are awfully fond of coders, aren't you ep? Maybe 1993 is a better year for you then, back then coders where still of importance. These days they are no more than drones spitting out code as the designers, graphicians and musicians see fit!

DANCE MY CODE MONKEYS! DANCE!!!!

okkie: hey, coders are designers these days! or designers are coders. or whatever.

besides, it's not like there are more than a handful of actual active graphicians around, is it? :)
coders rule! (or coderdesigners. or designercoders. or whatever.)
added on the 2006-07-03 15:24:22 by smash smash
if coders will ever become superfluous, demoscene will melt into the mainstream of the cg community. the interesting point about demos is that they are coded. (perhaps it's also a reason for the lack of graphicians, since only a few of them find this at least remotely interesting?:)

I belong to the people you would classify as "doom or cs players", but I really do enjoy a well-coded demo with cool procedural generation or morphing, for example the shark fin slicing the box geometry in Iconoclast or the clouds in Death and Taxes. I was also blown away by H7's tracer (especially when I consider that I myself fail to write even a simple triangle filler). There lots of great examples of great code too numerous to list here, but all good routines are pretty much worthless if you don't pay attention to visual and aural appeal.
