Hugi #38 was published in June 2014. This issue marked the end of an era, as there was no successor.

I personally worked on Hugi for more than 18 years. It was a lot of fun, but it was also very exhausting to make sure that I got new graphics and music for each issue, as well as enough content to make the publication of a new issue worthwhile. Basically, I still enjoyed it, but in the last few years, working on Hugi somehow felt more and more "artificial" and "obsessive" to me. I forced myself to develop new ideas for articles and to research them, even if the topics didn't really interest me.

It's a shame that there's no active diskmag in the PC scene, but I think the weekly videos from psenough make up for it.

There is a major flaw to every win32 diskmag I know of and that is its engine. Don't get me wrong, there was lot's of code that went into some of the engines over the years but none of them focused on the matter at hand and that is making the text more readable, making the diskmag easier to browse, etc. Also some diskmags changed engines for no apparent reason (zine comes to mind), instead of keeping some sort of consistency.

The first is true, the latter is not entirely true. The reason for this being, there is no executable file, there are no (afaik) interview and no coding articles. psenough is doing a very nice job giving us a summary of the past weeks of demoscene productions. But there are lots of things missing in relation to diskmags. But they are two completely different mediums.

Diskmags would probably work better now if issues focused around a particular exclusive article and had the contents, artwork and music fit that context. In a similar way to what Vandalism News has done with some of it's issues in the past, having a coherent thread across the whole thing. As a modern example look at Digital Eclipse's 'making of' series, where the form factor really benefits how the material is presented. There's a reason for the contents to be in a packaged form.

Short-form 'what I think of modern demos' writing has much more of a place on pouet at this point, because you can't really spark much discourse when a release schedule is maybe 2-3 issues a year.

I loved this diskmag. Hugi really gave me many pleasant hours immersed in demospirit :)

Hugi also inspired me to create my diskmag. Although I didn’t make it through more than 4 issues :) So, I can imagine what a lot of work it is.

Let me just add a short remark. Originally Hugi was intended to be a platform for its readers. Indeed, we received a lot of contributions from our readers at the beginning. This changed after the year 2000. The number of articles submitted by the readers declined very much. I don't really know why this happened - but the year 2000 was also the year when pouet.net opened, so maybe the two events are related.

The last few issues of Hugi were mostly created by the editorial staff. But that wasn't what Hugi was originally meant to be.

I think anybody trying to make a diskmag these days would face similar problems.
