interesting, your process seems pretty spaced out
It is!
I only get 20-30 minutes of focus time every few evenings to work on my prods. This time there was several breaks a 1-3 due to school events, family holidays/visits, preparation for conference talks ( where I usually LIVE code a little demo in 20-30 minutes ), ...
Doing early tests helps to find perf. and technical issues.
In the case of VOLTRA, I could have drawn actual characters with a glow in realtime... except for Firefox which is 4x slower at that than the other browsers so I filed a bug on Bugzilla and look for a workaround that was fast and compact: Built a list of fill patterns with each character incl. its glow. Building a sprite sheet took more space, and I thought doing a sprite sheet and blit'ing blocks of the frame buffers manually would be also take more space ... but it would allow to change the colors on the fly.
Another thing I fiddled with was the possibility to add audio filters to the speech synthesis but again this resulted in a discussion with some devs working on the browser and that's not possible :\
