Wade: I gave up on loading those 6000 pictures fairly quickly, so I didn't actually see these horrible CP images that everyone's talking about. I do know that the world is fucked up in this way, but to be a little frank, I couldn't care less if you want your weak stomach to be everyone else's problem. Or in other words, if you want to punish people for doing terrible things (including hotlinking to CP), then go ahead, but don't expect too much sympathy coming your way on account of your own fragile psyche. You're not the victim here. I think that's sort of how you need to view the "lighthearted reactions".

And yes, Jaylady's outburst is pretty ridiculous and quite worthy of flippant responses.

For future reference there's an account setting that disables images in the BBS. There's also a disclaimer that should make it obvious you can't assume the BBS is SFW. Plus there are admins who obviously care and take an active interest in what goes on here, meaning there is no way those images wouldn't have been removed as soon as anyone noticed what they were.

psionice: I know Pouet seems to attract a few too many users who really belong on 4chan or rotten.com or whatever. But it's been discussed a number of times already, and I can't remember any good solutions being proposed. You might even say that the BBS seems to be doing exactly what it was meant to do: it keeps the trolls occupied so they leave the comment pages alone.

On a side note it's funny to note how, apparently, in the UK you get punished for reporting child pornography to the police. Where exactly is your incentive to help if all you get is the police coming around and confiscating your stuff?

Same situation in Germany - reporting a CP site to the police is a surefire way to get all your computers confiscated and charges pressed against yourself. The site in question remains unharmed, of course.

Also, reporting pouet for some random user's forum activity is exactly the same thing as punishing an ISP for the behaviour of some of its customers, which I think we agree is a very stupid thing. I wouldn't call being disturbed by child pornography and murder having a "weak stomach" or "fragile psyche". It's about being able to empathise with the victims and their pain and feeling some emotional reaction over it.

That's modern UK law for you. It's very rare they hand out prison sentences to paedophiles these days and if they do, they're given access to gym facilities, games consoles, DVDs and are kept in protective custody. If something's not to their liking they can sue for inhuman conditions and leave prison with a cash bonus.

You'll serve more time in a UK prison for tax evasion, software piracy or benefit fraud than you will for molesting children. My theory is that the judges and politicians are just protecting their own interests.

Yep, I definitely believe so. When parliament polled to lower the age of gay consent to 16, there was an overwhelming majority in favour. I'm sure if they could lower it even further they would (not that age of consent stops them).

Sir: The reporting Pouet thing was discussed more on Bitfellas. Let's just say I knew nothing about the IWF and probably gave them more credit than they deserve, thinking some intelligent investigators might be able to follow the links from Pouet to the source of the images.

However, someone has since looked over the host link and found child porn STILL on there several days after the IWF report. Either they are very slow to act or they just don't follow the leads.

:) Wade, you should see (should have seen ..?) the discussion in germany about the CP issue. our government wants to (wanted to ..?) solve the problem by putting up "stop signs" in form of falsified DNS records. The fundamental intention is right, like yours (fsck CP !) but it was not more than "blinder aktivismus" (sry, does that translate to "blind activism" ?) since the ppl *really* responsible for creating, hosting and sharing CP were left unharmed. CP drama probably served well as another one of those political instruments, I guess..

Good to see you admitted your mistake, now let's get over it and pray that pouet mods/admins will always react to this as quickly as they (Gargaj) did.

Wade. Do not assume the police smart. They are not. They are many, which can account for the rare occasions where something resembling intelligent patterns can be observed with them. The police has 3 main requirements here in denmark

1.You have to be authoritarian on steroids
2.dumb enough that you are hard to cheat (thats dumb!)
3.from jutland

hermes: it's not so simple as just shutting down some site I think.. that site might be in some other country, with all the bureaucratic shit involved it could take a long time to get it shut down if at all. They should certainly be going after the site and the people behind it of course, but it's not likely to be easy or fast.

While the world's slowest police chase happens, it's a good idea to block access to the site I think. Stop people getting the images while it's still there (such a block could have prevented some eyecancer here too :)
