How will you celebrate 11/9 ?

category: general [glöplog]
Crest: no, we killed Alliende. Or at least got people to kill him. Because it's of course worse to have a communist popularly elected than a dictator who'll sell the country to US businesses.
Wade: Actually, dissenters do get a voice, but since we're not Rupert "Scandal Scandal" Murdoch or some moneybag like him we don't control much. If you ever go to the northeast US, try to find a WAMC public radio repeater... there are something like 13 now, broadcasting to all of New York, Western Massachusettes, Connecticut, Vermont... All supported by listener donations because the New York State government hates them. Then tell me we don't get a voice.

Crusader: Well, I saw this good documantary on arte tv. Probably the most precise one about the Chile military coup since a long time. According to it Allende was only surrounded by his friends in the last hours. Finally he sent the most of them outside the presidential palace after an agreement with the military leaders. He knew that he was lost and killed himself by shooting in his head with a machine gun, only a very close friend saw this...

is it really that interesting who held the gun which killed Allende? its not like he killed himself because of depression

I know that true sceners don't judge a scener by what country they're from, but by their character.
Correction from discussion just now:

True sceners don't judge.
Yes, well just stop it with the 'yay killing Americans' part, ecause that's mean.

Yeah but there is a world of difference between judging someones work. and make fun of people who tragically died. Im not saying that it is more or less important than other meaningless deaths around the world. But it's still meaningless deaths noless, and those people's memory should be respected.
I have lost good freinds in the combat with Usa over this matter, but is grown enough to know that it has little to do with americans, and everything to do with ther American administration.
Wake up children, 50% of the US population do not trust the administration further than they could throw it. The next 25% are unsure, but loyal to those who yeld power and the rest are the ones that propaganda actually works on. Then i could go further and say..well because of that i dislike trailertrash who blindly follow the leader...but hey...i have those in my own country aswell, so ill start hating them first. how about that!

9/11 is a rather confusing subject.

First, it's a major victory by the anti-American terrorist forces. You can be happy about it; and actually it can be adored as a wartime effort. (As, if you don't know, WW3 is just being fought.) Certainly it's worth remembering along with, for example, the German victory at Sedan, the triumph of the D-Day, or the retake of the Falklands. It's just a different warfare, in a war where everybody are soldiers.

But on the other side, you can say it's a horrible attack, with many innocent victims. This is also true.

Crusader: I am glad to hear that these dissenters are getting a voice and that there are people willing to listen and fund their rights to speak, but these people aren't given much exposure outside of the US, and that's unfortunate.

What we get instead are Hollywood blockbusters that glamorise revenge, machismo and promote gun culture, and chat shows like Jerry Springer that portray America as a nation of retards.

Sadly this is all we are permitted to see of American culture, and so - with a lack of alternatives - this is generally how we tend to perceive the American people. Of course, any intelligent person would realise this is just mainstream trash exported for financial gain: sex, scandal & violence = $$$ + £££ + Euros etc etc.

There isn't any doubt that the US has millions of intelligent individuals each with a mind of his/her own, but such people are either repressed by the corporate world or drowned out by the mainstream media, and are rarely seen or heard of outside of the US.

It is a very sorry situation, but it seems the powers of America would rather have other nations perceive their people according to movie or chat show stereotypes - as inbred hicks or gun-toting illiterates - than a nation of free thinkers.

Its nice to see so many europeans loving November 9th. USA sucks, but its still the best place in the world. I just went to Evoke in Germany and went all over Europe too and it was nice, but I don't see living there ever. If you don't get it, you never will...

If it takes a massive alien invasion with weapons of astronomical destructive power to make the human race stop fighting for peanuts and live peacefully, then that's what I'll pray for.

just a bit of editing: what mot said. (and george jr. needs to leave office before he, and the rest of the business-puppies in the white house, destroys the rest of the world).

only a few days are left, time for some statistics:
Poll shows 30pc of Americans unsure 9/11 year

Quote:
But when asked what year, 30 per cent could not give a correct answer.

Of that group, six per cent gave an earlier year, eight per cent gave a later year, and 16 per cent admitted they had no idea whatsoever.

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd - 48 per cent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 per cent were older than 65, the poll shows.

The wonderful world of percentage strikes again.
30 = 6+8+16
So 16 percent of 30 percent are actually more than 48 percent of 30 percent. WTF!?!
Thats right as I can see .. so. ..
Its a natural tendence for some people not accepting this facts... WtF!???

You've got to remember, the average person doesn't remember things that aren't important to them. Over here, we just talk about September 11th, and everyone knows exactly what they're referring to: the terrorist attacks. You don't need to specify the year, or the event in question. Sooner or later people forget.

Heck, I have to confess that I had to look up the date Pearl Harbor was attacked, bringing the US into World War II (December 7, 1941) and I have no idea what day it was that John F. Kennedy was shot (November 22, 1963)

Heck, most people over here are still miffed that the astronomical community decided that Pluto's not a planet- as if we magically changed something about Pluto itself.

Btw, it might be the right time to mention that even Chile had it's 9/11, on September 11, 1973. Guess who had a major role there. Terrorists won. :/
