Roller coaster of effects for a very obscure platform. I enjoyed it!

what-the-hell-is-that ? :D

cute design overall, massive thumb up for having such a nice display with a Z80 behind, for bringing another unknown computer to light and, haha, for doing some soldering to enable h/v interrupts!

Wow, rare platform and really cool demo in itself.

When we used this computer in school the graphics were really crap compared to this display of effects!

This is how I like my 8-bit demos, nice good looking effects, solid design and graphics work, reasonable pace, no scrollers. Music wasn't really something to write home about but did its thing well enough. Perhaps a personal favorite from the compo.

@baudsurfer: What do you mean "recycled"?

It's the first demo on this particular machine, which means the creators probably spent most of their time actually trying to get something that works at all, so yes it's probably not going to be 100% original "in your face" never seen before effects.

As far as I'm concerned it was awesome (except that the roller coaster part was a tad wayyyyyyy too long :D)

I've been tinkering with the Tiki on and off for over 4 years, but sometimes months of not doing anything. All the tools needed were made from scratch, except for the compiler/assembler (I'm using SDCC). I wrote a linker with some nifty features, serial transfer program to easily test code and write disk images and an almost cycle-exact emulator (I used publicly available Z80 and AY emulator code though).

The demo uses a custom trackloader which is capable of loading from the disk while playing music. Considering that you have to poll the disk controller constantly and a new byte appears about every 130th cycle, this was not easy.

It has been very fun doing something like this completely from scratch and I am considering doing a complete writeup some day. I've also started writing ideas for the next demo. :)

Excellent stuff! :-) Just tested on real hardware here at home, after a minor hiccup with the HxC floppy emulator it ran very smooth. :-)

A lot of fun; I have not-so-fond memories of the Tiki, and it's nice to see people pushing it. All the classical effects, but well done—the last part is a bit long, of course.

Sorry for the ghosting during the compo playback. We'll do better next time :-)

Excellent! Never heard of this machine, great demo with cool effects and ace music, awesome!
rulez added on the 2016-07-17 21:44:27 by StingRay StingRay
This was utterly and totally amazing! The platform itself has a special place in the hearts of the techy kids of the 80s and early 90s in Norway. Last part overstayed its welcome a bit, but that's really my only criticism, and it's a tiny one. :)

I feel I should also point out that this is a demo-demo, with demo buildups, scene cuts and sync how it should be. Bonus points for not packing it full of scrollers. :)
rulez added on the 2016-07-17 22:49:43 by gloom gloom
No clue about the HW, but the demo looks very good for a first demo on an 8 bit platform. Well done.

oldschool.
Baudsurfer: Stop disliking.
rulez added on the 2016-07-18 00:11:23 by Flashira Flashira
@gloom @frog: Yes, the last part is probably a bit too long. I blame it on a looming deadline. The process of tuning the track so it fiits the music is a bit time consuming. As for scrollers, it was actually left out after we were unable to make it fit with the flow of the demo. Response did make a bit longer tune on my request, but it didn't work well at all.

Congratulation for:

1-First TIKI-100 demo!
2-Breaking both TIKI-100 emul and MESS emulators! Neither can run this demo!
rulez added on the 2016-07-18 02:31:02 by ramon ramon
@ramon: you need neon's emulator to be able to run the demo since it's (for obvious reasons :-P) the only one that emulates the vsync/hsync mod. Also think it's the only one that properly emulates updating the vertical scroll register and palette, at least last time I checked MESS did neither of these correctly.

@neon: so, any chance for a public release of the emulator now? :-)

Nice demo. I appreciate that you paid attention to transitions and sync!
