Our little pre xmas present

A Pet 4032 demo "No Pets Allowed)

This demo features a new video mode for the Pet...
Unforunately there is no plattform selectable so it's a wild thing...

For those not having the real machine, you can try Vice emulator with the proper settings (4032, 32 kb ram) or else you
will get a message if you start the demo that you need a Pet 4032.
Go to the settings menu and select Pet settings. There select the machine to use >4032<

The demo also supports a Sid card. You can select the music at startup. To enable the Sid emulation in Vice:
Go to settings menu -> Cartridge settings and enable Sid emulation.

Things to download:

-binaries
Sources for the video mode (explanation how it works is included too)
and the music replayer are attached to the zip.
http://ultrafex.de/npa/no_pets_allowed.zip

-Video capture from Vice. Unfortunately we don't know someone with a 50Hz Pet.
If someone can capture it would be great.
http://ultrafex.de/npa/no_pets_allowed.avi

-Youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUguF1TnJk
better watch the avi...;)

-Video capture of one effect running on a real machine
http://ultrafex.de/npa/twister.MOV

Important
This demo works only on a Pet 4032 with >50Hz< !

i got co workers screaming to shut down the noise.
i think thats a good sign, plus its an exotic platform.
i dont really now shit about the PET so i cant really judge this technically, but im sure its quite awesome :)

I so cannot judge the effort but the source code looks freaking sick to me and world's firsts are world's firsts! I really enjoyed the demo, the orb logo with the plasma even was fecking gorgeous!

Well that is just awesome. The ultimate PET demo. I love the glitchy quality of the screenmode and the effects were top notch. Even the music was bearably good.

I'd really like to see this on the real HW.
rulez added on the 2010-12-15 15:59:39 by visy visy
Finally some proper hardware banging on PET! I guess this is the first PET demo that abuses the CRTC registers to some extent, right?

I'd like to know whether this demo uses raster tricks for anything? (See CPC demos for some possible applications of raster sync on the CRTC)
rulez added on the 2010-12-15 16:09:20 by viznut/pwp viznut/pwp
Can't really stand the music. :) Rest is very good though, only the twister is a bit too static for my liking. Anyway, cool Petmo. :)
rulez added on the 2010-12-15 16:13:18 by StingRay StingRay
viznut indeed ... the entire mode works by changing the video regs...
yep since i don't have a pet i used winape(cpc emu) to check if it works...

i did some stuff with rasters but no rasters are used yet... unforunately i'm not sure if the emulator does it correctly... the screen position is not emulated correctly in vice :/

but you can do more with the video chip... for example overscan is no problem...

Fucking neat ... finally a PET demo that doesn't suck :)
PET soundtrack is quite annoying, but I guess that's due to the nature of the hardware ... and this remotely resembles music, which makes up for it :) Awesome.

This has to be a new leading contender for "demo you'd most like to take back in time to when the machine was first released, and nonchalantly load up at whatever trade show it was launched at, just to fuck with people's heads".

Pfftt... damn newschoolers doing demos for the PET-4032, that machine was released in 1980, that's like YESTERDAY or something. Real coders target the PET-2001, 1977 vintage machine...

:P

Just kidding ofcourse, this is an amazing piece of work! New video mode kicks ass, and great to see an array of classic effects in it. Also good use of PETSCII in the parts running in normal text-mode.
4-mat is one crazy man to be able to get something that actually sounds like music out of the built-in piezo!
Best PET-demo EVAH!

Since I had the privilege of being "in-the-loop" so to speak, I knew this demo was coming, didn't expect it so soon though.
You could have kept it under wraps and made a strong bet for the wild compo prize in just about any compo, but instead we get it as an early Christmas present - thank you guys!

Watch this with the headphones off the ears, and your ears buried in concrete. Only joking, that was doing the best with limited possibilities.

Otherwise it kicks hard!

i did a new version of the demo...

i already hoped or better guessed the demo seems to work on 60hz us pets...

rob c. tested this on a 60hz us pet and it worked fine. so i've decided to release a version with removed hz check...

well the 60hz Pets have the same line frequency only the vbl frequency is different. it seems the us pet monitors are tolerant enough to display the demo.

if you want to use this on your 60hz Pet do so but at your own risk !
find the new version here: http://orb-demo.net/files/no_pets_allowed_nohz_check.zip

i found a video (click [video running on realhw] at the link list) on the net which shows the demo running on a real machine...
unforunately it also shows a small bug at the beginning and end of the demo...
seems setting the screen position via the crtc produces this behavoir...
anyway...

this is quite cool to see the demo running on real hw ... also shows how good the vice emulation is ...

I'm trying to run the Demo on my German CBM 4032.
It goes as far as the welcome screen, but doesn't move on from there.
What could be the problem?
added on the 2019-04-04 21:11:30 by naujoks naujoks
hm hard to say...you tried to select a the music driver by pressing (so far i remember) 1 or 2?
added on the 2019-04-08 07:16:16 by ultra ultra
I just bought a CBM 4032-32N (50 Hz) and tested this. The first screen shows ok for the lower portion of the screen and the top portion is filled with green colour. When the scene changes there's a blank screen and the music gets really slow for a couple of seconds. Some scenes show like they were XORed with a checkerboard pattern. After about a half a minute the screen goes blank again and the music goes really slow for about a minute. After that the cathode ray gets centered and I had to turn off the power to not damage the screen. https://www.icloud.com/photos/#0XueFiSLSGdJY-b1nqSH1zH2A

i already knew about the top filled stuff at the beginning. that happens when move the screen. also seeable on the video on top to where it is running on real hardware...
but never saw that xored stuff... seems there are revisions of the 4032 where it do not work. i'm sorry for you.
