Winden: I did the same effect exactly 2 years ago, i used rotating 2d grids with holes and placed the cubes on them randomly (i also used the same trick to make a 3d chessboard in a 4k intro).

I mean, each grid have a hole in it's center and their x/y positions are relative to their z one, the closer to 0 the z is, the smaller the x/y are.

It was a simple algorithm (it should be in 1k world), just create cubes at random x/y/z position and don't draw any cube at x>-2 or x<2.
