CUBES!
rulez added on the 2007-08-12 19:28:32 by BoyC
huuuiiiiiijjjuuuuiiuuuui! CUBES! BOXES!
it might not be a rehash of debris but the inspiration seems to be there ;) (which is good)
my only complaint would be that the atmosphere was great but could've been even edgier. (i might be comparing a bit too much to debris here...)

Okay-ish.
Interesting.....
"even with optimizations we do, this ends up using a lot of batches" - I thought you were using instancing.
Ok, but nothing that really sets new standards ;)
Great atmosphere in this one - I think we need more demos in b/w! The scenes with the dark shapes emerging from the lake gave me the creeps!
After reading the readme I feared for the worst, performance wise. But it runs great in 1024x768 4xFSAA... Good job, really enjoyed it!
Btw: Handing in Rob is Jarig as "Debris 2" was a nice touch :-)

really ambivalent about this one - i like the music the effects and the gfx but it feels so unfinished i cannot thumb it :( sorry
Oh my, that's some huge bunch of cubes at some parts. Maybe i oughta start using instancing too... :)
And the concept is great.
And the concept is great.
The code is great as expected, the music has it's moments, but the overall direction is the worst I've seen for a long time!!
Not too keen on the greyscale look either, but that's my personal taste. I won't thumb it down until I see the final though.

O_o--b
nice idea
Pretty good in fact.
neat.
good compo filler. looks really ugly at 1920x1200 in some scenes. pig.
I get the same error as xernobyl. AMD64, 1 gig, x600 (yes it's crappy..)
I really liked it on the stream though.
I really liked it on the stream though.
Looks a bit like screens/scenes/ideas re-cycled from Debris, but then again, doesn't look bad at all.
So i'll be waiting for the final version.
So i'll be waiting for the final version.
top notch
ryg, oh.. I forgot texture lookup in VS was 3.0+ only :)
hmm. effort. but seriously...
kwl
this is the first prod with lots of photos that i really like. mainly because the cubes fit really good in many of the scenes - you can actually believe that they're there. awesome. and... i love cubes :)
great atmosphere, great style and cool effect, but the sound effects are sometimes extremely painful for my ears.
Ergebnisorientierte aufwandsoptimierung.
Innovative and hypnotic :) Can't wait for the final. Also, good music that perfectly fits the purpose IMHO.
was nice, but felt a bit empty and missing a few essential things.
too much recycling guys. you can create new things if you really want :)
Nah, probably gives a much better impression on a bigscreen then on a monitor. Too much scanned shit.
where's the action? :(
the cubes look surprisingly "in the picture" actually. The soundtrack was nice and I dig the flowing boxes effects. One downer for me is that they seem a bit hyperactive or something.
The mountain lake scenery has a massively cool touch. I totally dig it. Some of the photos however looked a bit out of place compared to this, and the cheapo blur effect stuttering was downgrading it also in my perception. But some of the effects are that majestic and the music has that heavy atmosphere... Wow!
During the first seconds I was like "oh no, again one of those pseudo-artsy demos" then it turned out to be totally addictive and had this weird atmosphere. Really good stuff.
Ryg: the number of cubes on screen seems quite huge, do you mind sharing that coderporn information? ;)

I quite liked it, apart from the annoying blurs/distortion tricks.
keops: Afaik it's 192k cubes - 64k visible cubes drawn three times ("normal", reflection, shadowmap).
Liked it. Flows quite well at 1920x1200.
Wow! First it has a nice atmosphere.
Then, maybe not much effects than cubes but cubes the polygon pusher!!!
Then I just like it.

I beg you: invest some time into a final. I already love it as party release, but there is so much potential in the concept. The music already fits very well.
Maybe you could reduce the number of images (just the mountain theme?) and find more ways to threat the flock as a single character.
If you find a way to polish this one without losing it's original style, it could be a real peace of art. Where debris might lose its impact with evolving graphics hardware, demos like Chimera or Energia get better and better. You have a chance here, please take it... :)

kb_: damn, you were not far from having almost as many cubes as actual pixels on screen, you sick bastards :)
first scenes were awesome! (first cube scene: WOW!!!) but then it got worse :( too bad. music scared me ;)
made me all antsy and excited during the compo stream. still am. can't wait for a final, as it all looks so very promising ... other than that: what pixtur said
The people demand more cubes! Could have needed some better camera-poses to make the cubes look a bit more mighty, tho...
try to reduce the Blurr in that Final-!!!
...the Greetings-Part made me rethink the whole...roxx.!
...so here´s my Thumb even without a FINAL Version.!

a little bit too boring for me
CUBES
Nice atmosphere! It was a surprise, I though this wouldn't run in my cheap hardware but it does :)
Cool effect. At times, the photos looked like just a backdrop behind the cube effect though (they didn't appear to be the environment).. and I was detached from it by the time it got to the end. I probably would have preferred cubes flying in 3D scenes (though that would probably require more art and time, which were noted as limited resources).
could have been a real killer
slideshow with cubes, blur and distortion? come one dudes... this is not farbrausch!
Rulez for the Tyler-Durdenish subliminals in the beginning of the show... ;)
the shapes made by the particles were quite nice, and the design was terrible. i got a bit more irritated every time the screen blurred.
framerate goes through the floor in some places on my gf7900 with p4 3.6 (4xaa, 1024x768), usually when the cubes get somewhere near the camera.
buut, you have to admire the info file for making something pretty standard (shaderconstant instancing) sound amazing and brand new, and like you just invented it. :D
anyway, seeing as we're talking about rendering shitloads of cubes.. dont know if you do this already, but have you tried a) using a cubemap to regenerate the facenormals in ps and then not using degenerate vertices (that'll cut your vertex pipeline work down to a fraction of what it is now), and b) sorting the cubes front to back to help out the pixel pipeline - that many polys with aa on will generate a massive number of pixels otherwise. im using both methods here, and it really helps things out.

neue kubismus!111
A++++, really liked it and would watch again.
btw, with some not-so-strange resolution, fullscreen or not, with fsaa or not, i get a start.cpp:3001 error. otherwise works well
Almost feared it would be a new malpasset, but fortunately it was not.
good stuff.
doesn't start here on a Win2k Mob. Radeon x600/64 MB , 1 GB RAM.
too much annoying blur and not good enough show off of the effects, which is a shame since this had quite some potential as the first lake scene shows.
... what blur?
My problem was the 'sharpen' issue, causing some scenes to look like the background was disconnected. Probably not sharpen but it looks like it to my eye. My eyes suck though.
I'd like to see a final IF you guys wanna work on it more, I know some of you spent a TON of time on it. If not hey, it's cool enough (tho I definately prefer Ber0's entry.)

Same error as xernobyl, will wait for final :)
Athlon 3200+, 1gig, 9800XT, XP SP2 etc

the screenshot looks awesome but the demo itself is rather dull. the blurring does get really annoying after a few minutes.
Jezus, that blur is horrible! The effects look good though.
I will wait for the final.
I will wait for the final.
UP
the cubes look devastating good in some parts. It's bad that it's not finished. The beginning is really nice but the mood is dropping minute after minute.
I'll thumb it up when I see the final.

at first i thought there must come something cool, but then *yawn, yawn*
therefore!:
therefore!:
could you please kkapture it ?
256, we're working on a final (yes, really :), I'll create the obligatory xvid and youtube versions as soon as the final is out.
Fucking aye, on of the best demos of this summer.
Great mood.
Also annoyded by too much blurring. Apart from that, cool styly.
interesting.
at the party I found this overrated and lame but after having rewatched it in a sober state I must say that the atmosphere it creates is splendid. just be a little bit more sensible with that blur when doing the final please :)

yup, the "powerfulness" induced by the number of swarming cube is awesome!
i like it... ;) music is a bit odd... but somehow it fits ;)
Awful design, but I like it anyway!
Please make the final version run on my x740x 1gb ram 3,2ghz P4 thanx.. I also get this error:
Fatal Error
---------------------------
DirectX error 8876086c occured in ..\_start.cpp:3238

p.s. What I saw on the stream and the screenshot here does remind me of The Matrix ;-)
Technically good. Lacks something though, and the blurring was a bit irritating.
Thumb up for the greetings part.
Different.
alle daumen hoch.
this has exactly everything, that it needs. exactly my cup of tea, thx fr

the postpro-effects appear to be a little too "random", and the whole demo lacks dramatic composition imho. the cube-effect is really pretty, though.
i like atmosphere and sound-design of the music (wayfinder: i found 2 bassdrums that are a little "offsynch", can i keep them? ;)

i just died under tons of boring cubes, but the paradise is full of colors...
Look's great (maybe Matrix style) .. and performs alot smoother than debris did with me!
Only prob -> I had to run it while DEBUGGING, STACKMODIFING it, what happend ???!!
hint to the coders ! if you gonna take it
Yes and the "start.cpp" bug came from a texture sized 2144x1488 .. to big for some graphics cards X800

some nice things, but the pictures and the music just doesn't work with the rest .. seems misplaced to me
What xernobyl, rmeth, magic and a lot of other sceners said - get me a final fix that will run on my crappy gfx card, or get me a kkapture.
Impressive, those cubes are amazing and feat great inside the photos. Another nice b&w demo (now I think to point blank)
Its different and has partly a good atmosphere.
But those b/w photos and many parts are boring and somehow disappointing.
The style itsself is not executed well enough imho.

love the industrial whatever feeling
i second 505. maybe a bit boring, but still nice to watch and to listen
good
very good
Nice !
I also get the already mentioned DirectX error.
I guess nobody has mentioned this so far. ;)

Some scenes kill this old video card (gf5 series), have to watch it at home. But the music rules massively, and the demo looks great too.
thumb up for the credits part.
Just saw the youtube video: <3
I can't run it on my computer :(
I can't run it on my computer :(
great execution. here's the extra thumb for the excellent soundtrack:
too static, I don't understand this dark ambient style at all.
same error here like melw, but it's a nice demo
oh btw., 9800pro/WinXP SP2 here
not my cup of tea, quite cool ambiance but a bit boring.
dx error. WinXP SP2, Radeon 9700 Mobility.
The particle-thing reminds me on Debris in a way, but fortnately not copy-like. The music kicks ass, I love these industrial techno beats :)
Too bad it wouldn't run on my computer, the video rocked my bottom!
what src + melwyn said. Great soundtrack!
scary
boring, they can do much better.
This wasn't good as previous ones. :(
Nice idea.
what was this supposed to be? did debris break into a photo album??
First I saw this I wasn't sure. Now I just watched it on a large monitor and a decent sound system.
Rocks!
Rocks!
damn this demo is phat as hell!
i could appreciate the tech but the demo didnt' resonate with me.
not the best demo around, but some nice scenes (especially credits part is sooooo cool!)
++ great use of cubes and images

b/w artistry
stylish ... my head is full of 3d objects now ... :)
I totally dig this style.
For the atmosphere, music, and being unconventional.
doesnt work. see xernobyls error message.
p4m centrino, ati x700, winxp.
This seems to be an issue with ATi cards (see other comments)...
Was nice on the bigscreen though -> thumb

Big textures no problem.
And I like the beginning, good start is half done, I guess you guys step forward for this demo because the ending is normal apparently. I rule it 50%.

man, you can do a lot better.
this is shit.

excellent direction
oink oink.
Wasn't this supposed to get a final? wink, wink... :)
A bit apocalyptic - great!
Also, can I find an MP3 of the soundtrack somewhere? I've searched a bit but no luck so far. I love wf's work in this prod. :)
Nice idea and good music.
But the blurring effect is too violent and mechanical (i found it unconfortable to watch).

Really cool effect! I like those blurs, but that's just me :) The music is nice too.
wow, I completely missed this production. But now I fell in love with it. Looks outright splendid. Actually I think the combination of photo and realtime effects should be tried out more often. Good examples like this prove that some really great stuff can be done. Respect. And thanks for the greeting. o/
Looks like I missed it too. Apart from being way too long for the content, I like it! Would've been far more effective if it was half the length though. Very fitting soundtrack.
another one in the "missed this" camp here..
Great audio (fist very well), good visuals. Video still needed!
looked pretty awesome on the bigscreen, and as to be expected not as great at home on my monitor, but a great experience none the less, and a forgotten thumb from me finally :)
lack of content.
schwarzweißrausch
nice to see different stuff - by that I mean style. Everything fits nicely and its fascinating to watch.
Great cubes. I'm not sure about the particle system thing, but some constellations looked massive.
completely missed that one..
scary and apocalyptic. the tune is able to supports that.
id love to watch it in realtime!

A nice experiment, although loses a bit of its dynamics towards the end
huh, where is my thumb? this is one my favourite farbrausch demos!
pure hate
Too spooky, long and I didn't like the music.
But the photomanipulation worked very well!

I like the concept but, meh.
Music and overall concept are interesting, but it is really nothing special, so piggy.

Nice concept, not bad.
lotta cubes.. cool prod.. fr..
Not a keeper
Wow, that quite a lot of cubes...
Design could have been better, and like some mentioned, the blur was really annoying at moments. Nice mood still, and nice use of images in a demo.

A very memorable demo.
Awesome style and thumping basslines.

Wow, that was great. Cool music!
Nice track there. Nice black/white demo, I really like the style.
Excellent
Entschuldigen Sie, Herr Ober, aber ich habe da einen Würfel in meiner Suppe.
how could I have missed this?! The best FR-demo of them all! Superb stuff. In every way!
interesting
watched it in realtime finally \o/

Quite nice
When Farbrausch goes B&W. This awesomeness.
i really like the idea but i can't spin this in anyway to make it look good

Pretty cool.
i must confess that i robbed 4 bars of the track of your demo ...
