An old unfinished demo project with ripped music I decided to release. I was supposed to make an intro out of it, but I'll probably never be motivated enough so here you go :)
Of all the things I've ever coded, I think this is my favourite.
added on the 2004-09-29 13:51:53 by Preacher Preacher
It doesn't look bad, with faster music and some more dynamic it can be a nice Demo or intro. The idea is cool :)
added on the 2004-09-29 14:05:54 by wickedz wickedz
beautiful stuff you got there... since it wasn't released at any party, i won't blame about ripped music.
rulez added on the 2004-09-29 14:22:14 by shadez shadez
switches resolution, gives me a blank screen for half a sec, and exits (does return to proper resolution). too bad, i'd like to see this. i've a winxp pro laptop with intel centrino 1.4ghz, intel extreme graphics ii (sucky) adapter. sounds like some incompatibility in the startup code. do you errorcheck? maybe it's my lack of hwvp?

Nice rendering and powerfull scenes. Would have give it a thumb without ripped trax for sure. Well done!

i think it aint't that bad. only think i can't manage to comprehend is why you write in the nfo that you're ashamed of the code and general unfinished stuff, but release it anyway..
added on the 2004-09-29 15:33:14 by madMixx madMixx
This really impressed me. The music suits the scenes perfectly and it al looks great although it's only cubes.
Somehow the CPU usage is kinda high. It runs nice on my notebook with fast CPU and slow GPU, but on my PC with slow CPU and fast GPU it's like a slideshow.
rulez added on the 2004-09-29 15:34:09 by 0xtob 0xtob
Ok stuff, but nothing that cool. Some cubes strangely disappears suddenly in the "light"-scene. Otherwise would be a piggie, but have to thumb down ripping.

Looks nice, isn't too artsy. And having watched demos since '89 I sort of a have a soft spot for cubes.. Shame about the ripped music though, especially with such ear-piercingly bad vocals.

i like it - finally some creative usage of very basic opengl

such cubic art is eye orgasm!

instant coup de coeur!
rulez added on the 2004-09-29 16:13:17 by Zest Zest
Skrebbel, so far it's worked on all computers I've tried it on. I'd blame the intel extreme graphics adapter.. but of course it could be our code as well, the demoengine used is over a year old and really buggy. But porting it to the new, better one would basically mean rewriting the effects as well, as the API is different nowadays and I really don't feel like doing that any time soon.

0xtob, the reason it's so slow is that it all rotations, lighting etc is done with software. Most of this was coded before I learned proper OpenGL and it shows.. but again, a total rewrite would take time and motivation I don't have.

And yeah, I apologize again for using ripped music. One of the main reasons this wasn't released at a party was the fact that I think the music fits the demo so well.. I know few scene musicians, and none of them could probably produce anything like this. If you're able and willing to work with us in the future, drop me an e-mail :-)

nice demo, especially the music is great!

The glow looks cool too and nice idea to build everything with cubes. Perhaps a name like cubemaniac would have fit better :P

visuals looks (and are) unfinished, scenes are good, texts and thema sucks, some good ideas and renderings.
btw music have potential and textures are not good for this kind of scenes.

brilliant...
i mean... this is fucking awesome... i'm stunned...

Really cool-looking, and great atmosphere, even though the latter is probably more because of the music than anything else.
added on the 2004-09-30 13:11:47 by sagacity sagacity
the music is what creates the atmosphere, no doubt about it. the rest is pretty good actually, but it doesn't really go anywhere after the "light"-part, which is a shame.

Very clever and sensitive, good abstract scenes, nice abstract design of eight scenes of life.

Ripping music sux, but VNV Nation track fit to the overall feeling of demo...
rulez added on the 2004-10-06 19:53:38 by Trauma Zero Trauma Zero
Good demo. But near plane cutting the cube (omg) and ripped music make it piggy.
added on the 2004-10-09 15:14:05 by jimmi jimmi
so well pulled of, even though i dislike ripping this demo needs the vnv nation tune to become what it is, imo a timeless masterpiece, will be one of my favorite demos for a long long long time.
rulez added on the 2004-10-11 22:04:12 by bzz bzz
Some really great visual ideas!

But...

Ripped music that doesn't fit and kinda sucks. Don't know why everyone's so hyped about MIDI strings that sound like default Windows GM sounds mixed with a guy who can't sing and has a *horrible* voice.

Or maybe I've just visited one too many opera productions in my life.
Wow, this is really great! I can't believe it's unfinished. Traction <3

Cubes+Glow and ripped music which just run side-by-side at best.
added on the 2013-03-15 04:06:18 by T$ T$
Oh hey, this one is by far the most creative way of using cubes only I've seen so far. Really loved the billboard effect at 'birth', and left a bit puzzled what 'life' tries to show me - my guess is that my finished ideas inspire others?

Soundtrack isn't my cup of tea somehow, but it really sets the mood - as it's a unfinished demo I understand the usage of commercial music, while waiting for the actual musician to deliver something as moody.

Very cool one!
rulez added on the 2013-05-25 14:48:51 by mog mog
It was never meant to be released in this form, I was just toying around with the primitive glow filter that I came up with but then decided to put it up on Pouet on a particularly beautiful and cold autumn day (I still remember it for some reason, I put it up on Pouet and took a long two hour's walk by the seaside after that). The lyrics in the song somehow became relevant during the process and then I just decided to release it as is and not wait for a suitable soundtrack

The 'life' was meant to be a sort of a transformation. I had an idea of a sequel where it would pick up on that, but it never materialized. In retrospect I think the cubes should've turned into wireframes again, to make a loop.
