I've been researching adjusting the HSYNC signal on Sharp MZ-800 for a good while, spending a lot of time trying to understand signal generation. I was going to show this off at a party with a proper demo with me hoping that I could spend more time to stabilize the picture better and cross check compatibility with other monitors and RGBI. No known emulator currently handles Horizontal Sync or the CKSW bit correctly. I still have research to do in this area, and it's going to take me weeks or months of hand craft work to do this. The picture isn't fully rock solid but I have avenues to solidify it more.

Sorry if this doesn't work on your monitor, I've only tested this on composite and a shitty upscaler(av2hdmi). A proper demo needs better testing and stabilizing the hsync.
I am sure I still have ways to improve this but like said I just had to rush something out.

I always wanted an achievement in breaking emulators similar to what Horner and friends did on IBM PC. It was a big item on my bucket list.

AI bros make me fuckin' sick. I'm so sorry you had to release this "ahead of schedule" because those rapists don't take "no" for an answer.

tldr I discussed the hsync finding on Sharp MZ discord.
someone started to implement hsync in their emulator project that they are working on with claude, feeding what I said and I had to rush out something before claude. I should have kept my mouth shut.

thing is, I should've just kept it a secret, but my ego wanted to tell about it, but it's really cool that you can somewhat horizontally scroll on a system that has bitplane graphics and a slow z80.

I'll publish my findings soon on scenegit so at least kept away from most llms

Congrats on the technical achievements so far, and thanks for sharing that cautionary tale.

Is there a video? In any case, thumbs up for the technical innovation.

Well I'm glad you got a world's first atleast! These kind of actual innovations are almost better to release separately, demos are judged differently

the image tearing effect is fantastic 😏

Very nice work. It's unfortunate that these days it's really best to keep your work completely secret right until the moment that you can make a big reveal at a demoparty. Any random nobody can copy and paste directly into Claude without a second's thought and ruin the fun.

i don't know much about sharp mz, but thumbs up for the technical achievement, for doing real handcraft, and condolences for the shitty behaviour of ai bros.

for the technical achievement.

and at a time like this, its best that you could've kept that to yourself until like its time or have better find someone (or some people) trustworthy of your research. sorry you had to go through with those ai-bro losers.
rulez added on the 2026-10-22 23:29:16 by Brittle Brittle
wow that was awesome, sad it ended up rushed because of shitty claudesnipers :/

to be honest it's not even about LLMs (they do drastically reduce the time for copying the stuff and lower the barrier - but that's another topic) but rather about the people that like to ruin the challenge by ripping other's ideas off (as with the recent donut shader incident at the demoscene Discord) - at least the emu author could have asked you if you happen to work on something special and hold the feature off to not ruin the surprise :/

also what brittle said

You can sabotage AI feeding by posting some deliberately incorrect data.

Congrats for doing actual smart work

situation has been solved in a way that I am satisfied with. tl;dr I just want to publish stuff first if I've put human hours into it and it's new.

im wary of even posting a rendered pic these days, fearing the next week a derivative will be a cover for a game on itch ...

i found newgrounds to be a fresh place ... sadly no total a.i. ban demoscene site yet , maybe time to go back to IRC and trade no a.i. demos as contraband :)

i come here for people who put their soul into showing off their mad skills and lately its been somewhat disappointing indeed. Even if this isn't visually impressive enough to get me into a flashback acid mode, i think it's super awesome because of the mind that did it and what it stands for ... time for everyone to go into the tunnels and weld that steel door shut while Arnie tries to claw his way in.

I often get misunderstood, i dont want cro-magnons who never put anything online to not use a.i. . Im good with humanity normalizing itself to the point where theres no fringe and evolution stops. I never liked humans in the first place, look what they did to my life.

What id like is to have that thing not forcefully shoved up my rear as it invades my last temples , unlike humans, my species gets very bad allergic reactions to having something forcefully shoved up an orifice that's essentially one-way traffic.

THIS is a demo !

Cool tech! The Claude chasers are a bit like The Vulture from Brooklyn 99 :)

Cool!

GenAI really messes with the fun and craft in a lot of creative hobbies. But hey, in these fast-paced times, who wants to have fun?

Fuckings to LLM frontrunners.
rulez added on the 2026-10-23 10:04:25 by Sesse Sesse
Absolutely beautiful effect, honestly now that you've made sure you're first I think you could still make a demo with it and get tons of praise for it. I have seen probably not any Sharp MZ demos compared to the Amstrad CPC or Plus/4, and this shows it can keep up 100%.

(as with the recent donut shader incident at the demoscene Discord)

I haven't been in there for three months, what is that incident?

Awesome!

Fuckings to LLM slop tourists, all of 'em toddlers with a gun

Btw isn’t it curious how almost no-one who gleefully thumbed up last week’s slop isn’t commenting on this prod?

Sorry you had to rush to release this, but happy to see you beat the slop bros. Good work!

Maybe because this one requires special knowledge? I like it but I don't have any clue about the groundbreaking technology behind it.

Oh, thumb.
rulez added on the 2026-10-23 19:58:05 by gaspode gaspode
In this thread the somewhat sucking thing is that even though there's no post saying that the emu author character was a clueless red pilled "lolz i fixed your work with AI" jerk, people automatically seem to label them as such.

But maybe nobody means that, they just generally wave their angry fists towards general "AI bros" and "rapists" <s>:-D</s>
didn't expect AI drama here :/
what gaspode said, congrats for the technical achievement
rulez added on the 2026-10-24 11:33:16 by wullon wullon
Thumb up for the technical achievement.

I am just wonder, was it their own emulator, so if they realize that "oh I can improve it by implementing that hsync" don't the have the right to fix it, whether it's Claude or not? Unless his whole emulator is a Claude creation, but if he was the legitimate creator of the emulator before AI and now he kinda uses the tools?

However I like the absurd in these moments of the answer being NO. Like, if AI does something really useful but demoralizes creative communities, then maybe NO is ok to me.

As one of the 'and friends' that's cool to read. :) Looks awesome. Well played and congrats!

I'd still love to see a more fleshed out effect/demo if you manage to fine-tune this. (Now if only PC/CGA allowed such precise hsync control...)

Tried it on the real hardware with an rgbtohdmi. The black and blue squares moves as in your youtube capture. The cat is completely still. The screen goes all black every second or so. Still, totally awesome!

interesting I also have real hardware and I do get a swing! This is why I needed more time for testing :) most likely what happens is that your upscaler might not like the constantly moving odd horizontal lengths!

ended up reading upon it real quick, my understanding is that RBGtoHDMI has an averaging linelock, meaning that it doesn't behave like a CRT or an older LCD. I may be wrong but this at a quick glance how I understand it.
added on the 2026-10-26 21:01:12 by MuffinHop MuffinHop
Yes, I'm sure that it has something to do with the RBGtoHDMI. Unfortunately I have no CRT or old monitor to test with.
