return of the joker.

More platforms need to be involved in this war.

Thumb up for a big rotzooom.
Maybe it's youtube, maybe it's math,
but it does not look smooth animation.

I'm sure this is super technical and all, but uhh.. it's also quite janky and ugly IMO...

Technical, smooth and Nice !
That’s what I love !

It wouldn't be a rotozoomer challenge without some ai generated joker taken from facebook! Has there been a single rotozoomer challenge demo that has been watchable yet?

Thanks everyone.

Yes, ATARI won :)

Please hold on as I'm working on the Final, and making sure it works on real hardware.

minebrandon: Thanks man.

You know that I usually publish my prods myself, nice and clean, right? I did hold off from publishing the prod as I'm juggling family, work and trying to get the final version out.

But thanks for shitting on it, and on other prods from that series at the same time.

Around the rotozoom craze, I did search for some images that could work well in fairly low resolution and rotated, but lost track of the sources. I did have some doubt about this one but it worked so well and as it became clear that I could pull off this prod, I didn't feel that it would be fair to ask an artist out of blue for a picture with little time.

The Rotozoomer challenge prods are not for everyone, but yeah, I do think they are more than watchable and enjoyable. Just like size coding, there is a certain appeal to pushing the limits on fixed hardware.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing your next prod sir.

Congrats guys! 7004 blocks seems like a big achievement for Atari but if I'm not mistaken, I think in Grizzlybear/Damones there are 64x128 = 8192 blocks of 4x2.

No. The resolution is nice, but it's unwatchable. Comparing it to the Amiga's 12-bit chunky modes is cheeky.

^____^

Rhino: Thanks! Are you sure Grizzly Bear was 4x2 all the way? I thought it was either 4x4 or doing 4x2 and skipping the odd scanline/block to get some motion blur.

Antony/DTA: The whole demoscene is cheeky :)
Grizzly Bear by Damones was the first to use a cheeky pattern, and countless Amiga prods use some even/odd blocks/pattern and no one bats an eye.
added on the 2026-05-31 19:21:03 by p01 p01
I think it's actually 8x1, but the pattern makes it look like 4x2. In any case, 8192 blocks but @britelite can clear this up for us. It also seems to make more accurate calculations, as can be seen in the zoom.
added on the 2026-05-31 20:11:59 by Rhino Rhino
Definitely 8x1 but alternating to make 4x2
added on the 2026-06-01 01:48:37 by p01 p01
Thumbs up for the prod as it both zooms AND rotates which is always nice!

You're absolutely right, I did cheat a bit and only calculate either odd or even scanlines per frame. So it displays 8192 blocks but only calculates half of them per frame.

I could have easily displayed more with a less accurate zoomer, but I do love a zoomer that doesn't turn into a mess when zooming close so I made the precision a higher priority than the amount of blocks :)

Technically it's really impressive. Cool music too.
Visually it looks a bit messy and the scrolltext is quite hard to read.
On my STE I'm also getting an all-green Joker with a row of glitchy pixels in the middle of the screen for the first 15 seconds (the part that's black on the video).

@britelite Thanks!
So p01 was right, and his Joker is the rotozoom with the most blocks so far. Congrats!
added on the 2026-06-03 01:17:29 by Rhino Rhino
That doesn't run on my real STE (4Mb) :-( No problem with other demos, I'm so disappointed :-/
britelite: Thanks. Agreed. The zoom and precison in Grizzly Bear are way cool!

Atari friends: Please bare with me for a few more days. I picked up a VGA monitor that supports 50Hz display, and the ACSI2STM Mini Hard Disk + DIN→VGA adapter I ordered are in transit. I hope nothing gets stuck in customs and they arrive on time for some week end debugging.

With these I will be able to hook up my good'ole Atari STe and figure which part of the code to move 1-2 NOP left or right for MAXIMUM JOKER to work on real hardware.

I really like the screen due to its somewhat rough vibe and sound. Great work!
And I am sure nobody is in a hurry, p01! Thanks for the effort.
