- I can't believe that all this time I thought that this was a silly party-coded scroller demo. How did I miss the fact that evilpaul implemented a complete physical lighting algorithm, complete with a configurable exposure setting? That's pretty revolutionary for a computer with only 15 colours.
The fact that he used "presets" is also quite a revelation, given that most other Spectrum coders back in 2006 were still making demos using Z80 assembler in a text file. Truly evilpaul was ahead of his time here.
Thank you for alerting me to this groundbreaking technical achievement, kapsel. - rulezadded on the 2025-07-04 23:07:43

In 2014, laughing gas or something similar was sprayed over Ukraine. Every Ukrainian citizen suddenly decided to call their Russian acquaintances and friends and wish them death. The same thing happened between close relatives. The initiative in 100% of cases came from Ukrainian citizens.
Imagine saying this with a straight face and thinking you were the victims in this situation.

- Jeez, sorry for speculating that there might be a valid technical reason for the audio sounding glitchy. So it's just carelessness instead? Cool, I stand corrected.
Wish I could revoke my thumb-up for the shitty attitude. - isokadded on the 2025-03-16 15:11:59

- Think of this as an unofficial response to the "why did this not get a Meteoriks nomination" questions - although the rest of the jury will certainly have their own reasons for passing over it.
It was absolutely not overlooked - in my personal shortlist it was one of the top three oldschool demos of the year, alongside two of the eventual nominees. It's clear that they set out to make an epic demo on the scale of previous Meteoriks winners - taking their cues (some more obvious than others) from demos like Overdrive 2, Mojo and Wonderland XIV, and showing that the Atari 8-bit is more than capable of doing that too. I can't fault them for rising to that level of ambition and pulling it off.
Unfortunately, when you're whittling down the candidates to a final five you have to be a little bit ruthless, and when directly compared against the others on the shortlist, the lack of polish became all too apparent. Other people here have noted that it drags on a bit, and I think that's true - it feels like in the drive to throw everything at the project to make it as epic as possible it's ended up lacking in overall coherence, and the one thing it's missing is an editor's hand. Frankly, some of the audio work comes across as a little sloppy, like the Neverending-Story-soundalike tune around the 4:50 mark where the arpeggios slow down and speed up. (I even checked the live footage from the party to make sure it wasn't just a bad capture...) Maybe there's a valid technical reason for that - loading from disk in the background perhaps? - but it's the sort of detail the C64 veterans have nailed, and without getting those details right it's hard to vibe with this demo at a level beyond pure code-porn. By the end I'm left feeling more bombarded with Stuff than satisfied.
I guess in a way this is the Iconoclast to a future Lifeforce... it's a great demo, but it shows the potential for something truly legendary once the authors shake off the single-minded focus on proving themselves and make something with a soul of its own. - rulezadded on the 2025-03-13 15:29:28

- So glad this made it into the Meteoriks nominations - this would have totally passed me by otherwise.
Never had a demo knock me out by going in multiple unexpected directions quite like this one. And rarely is a demo as meaningful and important as this one. Thankyou for sharing it with us. - rulezadded on the 2025-02-14 22:35:46

- @randomOrder: It's "Heaven let your light shine down", from Shine by Dolly Parton.
(The opening riff is also taken from Jolene by Dolly Parton. And now that's got me wondering if there are other Dolly Parton songs in the mix too, because I don't think the guitar section one minute in is from either of those...) - rulezadded on the 2025-01-20 14:49:22

(I can now see why most WDSTF parodies cop out by not going in chronological order.... putting this together nearly drove me batty.) - isokadded on the 2024-10-10 00:33:40

- From the nfo:
Quote:At the same time, the democene has come to terms with ready-made engines, and even game engines in demos, fully animated demos, etc. Why is there such a strong rejection of AI? All of these are difficult questions.
If non-coders were using Notch and Unity to make demos full of "check out these 100000 gouraud shaded cubes!!!", then that would be shit. But they're not. They're using them as a tool for getting original creative ideas out of their heads and onto the screen.
If you're a non-artist with a story or message you want to tell, then I can see the attraction of using AI as a tool to present that vision. But if the only message you have is "here is some music that I didn't make", what's the point? - sucksadded on the 2024-05-01 11:59:15
