• sagacity: there IS dx9 installed. since d3d9.dll is an import and not dynamically loaded, it shouldn't even throw a messagebox in that case. well. it should, but it would say that it needs dx9.

• ok, new drivers converted the messagebox to an "Error loading texture" one.
  When you code for a stuff that is only in, let's say, 10% of PC's, then make it run on that 10% goddamit.
