- Trivialfursuit: Sir, I've been involved in the demoscene for almost 20 years, and made several trips abroad to parties with demos. I've spent collective weeks sleeping on floors and watching productions on big screens. I've spoken to MANY people who are willing to listen to how a demo is made, what makes the producers tick and where this whole thing we call "demoscene" is going to. I like to engage in heated conversations and exchange harmless insults with guys like Smash. I personally wish I knew how other creators think, what references do they use and so on.
I've tried to be honest with my popular culture references, my weaknesses as a coder and designer and my wish-lists for the future of the demoscene and ASD. Of course, I've also been supportive of my work and fellow group members. I've used this forum since it was created 10 years ago and continue to do so to give insight into our work and the spirit of our collaboration. Most people rather enjoy that.
I don't have to be apologetic, of all people, to you (a newcomer that has already made 6-7 idiotic comments about things you clearly have no clue about) about my stance and work, but you find me on a good day. - isokadded on the 2011-08-08 16:36:09

- Hi all,
First of all thanks for all the comments, positive and negative; and thanks for all the votes too!
"Spin" started as an experimental demo, back in January 2011. The purpose was:
1) To make a demo with peculiar rendering (particles or lines or something else) that would embrace the nothingness of the background.
2) To make a demo that is one camera take.
3) To use, somehow, the Kinect depth camera.
4) To finish the whole thing in less than 2 weeks.
5) To go to Assembly or Evoke with it and aim for top-3.
I started and finished with the visuals in early April (working on it alongside Butterfly effect). The demo was augmented with that particle explosion effect, which worked quite well with the lines. The original name that I gave it was "The evolution of human locomotion", but when Amusic wrote the soundtrack we stuck with "Spin", which is more suitable. Do read the lyrics to find out what it is about, then check how they match with the visuals. "Through the door" - "Colourful nightmares" - "spinning in a shell"; I don't recall another demo that words *mean* something.
I will talk about technology in another post, but for now I say: wow! how bizarre that the 20th Assembly demo compo is won by a glitchy demo! when did that happen before? Starstruck maybe? Yet, Starstruck has large sections with normal rendering. Spin was a big gamble because nobody knew how well it would go with the crowd: yellow lines against black background? winning the compo?! yeah that'll be the day. The day has come, we're evolving!!
I love it \o/

- h20: i don't think we're particularly strict with criticism of other people's work on pouet. I give one thumb down for every 20 thumb up and rules and generally try to be positive. I will comment heavily on the work of people I know personally too. Being strict with our prods is something I don't mind. Some times it helps.

- pixtur: thanks for your nice comments. My explanation about the particle nature of things may be out of place indeed; I'm only carried away by the technology behind it (where each particle does have a mind of its own). Nice that you notice the shadows created by the heightfield effect; what is interesting is that not all of the demo is in 2.5D and there are parts where there is a mixture of the two (2.5D and 3D). For example, the part with the water and the city - the city is 2.5D but the water is full 3D. Notice how the sky scrappers "bent" as they move upwards: this is because they are constructed through their depth map (as seen from above), which is non linear. Similarly, the leaves and butterfly are bent too - it's not easy to notice but they do.
Speaking of butterflies, I too agree that they can be kitch. This reminds me of a conversation I once had with Chaos, just after watching Planet Risk on the big screen at Assembly 2004. He said:
- Ya, zat demo vas VANTAAZTIC! But ven the hands catch the buttervlies it vas AAWFULL!
haha :-). - isokadded on the 2011-08-01 23:00:59

- Hi all,
Some very interesting comments here; comments on pouet after a release are my favourite bits. I'll try and answer some:
* Surely, by now, you must all understand that *all* groups make various kinds of productions - sometimes we go for the "kill" (if the stakes are high, like at Assembly or Breakpoint) and sometimes for the fun, to experiment or to support a smaller party. The butterfly effect falls into the second category. We had a chat with amusic back in April, when he composed the music (which I found not suitable for a demo of a bigger scope) and said that if I can make some visuals for it in 4-5 days then we'd have a demo for Euskal. And so it happened. As such this is, technically, a very important milestone for us since it is always the case of music being written after (or alongside) the visuals.
* The fairlight connection: as I've mentioned before, a "particle system" is something way more complicated than dots on screen. What you see in this demo is *not* a particle system but some gl_Points running over vertex shader functions (a novel approach, for me at least). It has nothing to do with the more complex stuff from Fairlight and the concept was taken from 2.5D heightfield presentations which, as far as I know, are as old as Unreal by FC if not older (surely older). There can be no "fake" or "cheap" particle effects (or any effect) in the demoscene: as long as it's realtime and looks good, it's good. There is little point debating who steals whom and whether this is cheap or dirty: I like to steal other people's ideas (and some times improve them) but I'll do it for the very best: plastic, mfx, fairlight etc. Similarly, I enjoy the influences of my group on other groups. This is how the demoscene, painting, photography etc. works.
* The music: It's not for everyone, sure. On a personal level I also enjoy the version of Amusic singing, as it conveys more anxiety: it is as if the singer is exposed to the "truth" of the lyrics. His voice is more humane. The difference between Dylan singing his songs and some other guy (anyone is better at singing, in the traditional sense, than Dylan) doing a nice cover. I mostly prefer the first version.
However, the female voice sounded surprisingly clear on the party speakers and, for some strange reason, stays with you after repeated hearings. I'm not in a position to judge the technical intricacies of mastering and mixing and whether it could have improved with more work there.
* The lyrics: I speak this language for many years, yet I find it almost impossible to judge a poem written in English. It comes more naturally (and I do enjoy poetry) in Greek. English will always be a second language to me, and as such it is fairly distant even if I use it more often than Greek. I believe the same thing happens to you, dear reader of this forum that you're probably NOT from England. It is probably very hard to write lyrics in a second language, and even harder (I believe) to judge them. So, are they corny or not? I think not, they convey a simple message on first level and then a second - which is the one that links it with the demo. That is usually hard, yet it works quite well here, because the visuals are fairly easy going and so it is easy to concentrate more on what is being said.
Maybe we must start experimenting in our exotic language - last time we did we got a scene .org award eh Amusic?
