The fact that I knew that others in the audience were witnessing the same thing on this huge projection screen before us made it feel more like an exhibition piece than a compo entry.
whole heartedly agree. this is a brilliant point and i think i was trying to communicate something similar myself, but was unable to find myself to this exact sentiment. perhaps actually being in the audience would've instilled the feeling more consciously into me, alas… - isokadded on the 2025-04-25 23:20:48
- demo Windows WALKMAN by Altair
- you will Live, Laugh and Love, and you will enjoy it
classic Altair, sweet stuff. excellent soundtrack with a wonderful blend of styles. i like the arc that it forms in terms of various moods, and how well the direction follows in its footsteps. a great example of letting the music take the lead, and then having it and the visuals walk hand in hand. - rulezadded on the 2025-04-24 14:54:34

- Best production at the party, probably the best 4k intro this decade so far, and also quite certainly the best audio in a 4k intro ever. Actually no, in fact, this is one of the best soundtracks to anything to have ever come out of the scene.
Once again, there's something to be said about sincerity and vulnerability in putting out something like this. Something that comes from deep within you, something personal, something about you. Watching this makes me feel wistful, even heartbroken, longing for something, for a piece missing somewhere within. But at the same time there's ambiguity whether filling that void is even worthwhile; a conflict and a friction akin to desire or intimacy itself. It's cautiously violent, but turned inwards, towards the self.
This is not long at all. If anything 8 minutes feels constricting, a limitation only imposed by the conventions and rules of the compo system. I could've sat in a state of sensory deprivation for over an hour, sinking deeper and deeper into this. Not to draw a banal comparison, but this is very close to experiencing an Autechre concert, being stationary for an extended period in a state of minimal external stimuli. Of course at a party you give up your agency to pick and choose the exact details of what when and how to experience something, but for works of artistic sincerity I'm hopeful that most would ultimately feel rewarded for the experience. Some clearly did, while others not so much.
I've for a long time tried to campaign for productions to push the limits of duration, breaking away from being just easily consumable pieces of entertainment generally packaged to around 5 minutes or less. Ultimately I'm relieved at the reception seen here, despite the disappointingly low placement in the final results. I feel optimistic that perhaps finally this new leaf might be turning in our silly little sub-culture.
Maybe I said too much already. The demo itself is the speaking, and that's what we all should be here to appreciate. Thank you for trusting me with the preview version of this. Ultimately seeing it in context was even more satisfactory, however.
Genuine masterpiece. - rulezadded on the 2025-04-23 14:51:13
- demo Amiga AGA entropy chamber by Logicoma [web]
- speaking of a "dream team"…
exactly how i would've imagined Logicoma to translate onto "nuskool" amiga. relatively simple and to the point, but it doesn't need to be anything more than that. i love how clean it looks, from technical pov with antialiasing and everything (supersampling you say??), as well as the design and presentation, not to mention the music.
funnily enough this also is probably the closest visual counterpart i've seen to the initial concept of absolute territory that was floating in my head… - rulezadded on the 2025-04-23 01:17:16

- looks like shit regardless of the technique. one might still be inclined to commend the effort even if the end result is vile and ill conceived, but obviously not in this case.
sad case of certain people who insist on using this as a hobbyhorse for campaigning on promotion of this excrement and the tools used to hallucinate it. if you like it for what it is, fair enough, whatever. but smugly provocating other artists and then shielding yourself behind "whatever happened to politeness" is rather transparent and offensive.
about the demo itself intending to be provocative, i fail to see in what meaningful way exactly. the only underlying message here as seemingly confirmed by the proponents is just about "having a good time", which is not exactly profound or something to feel provoked about. Variform 2 is about the burden of a legacy and what comes with carrying it; a cathartic burst of frustration towards an audience waiting to be spoon fed. what's important though that it doesn't purport itself as Good in the traditional sense, which is why it works in a subversive sense.
this demo on the other hand doesn't have any sort of self-awareness like that. the only divisive aspect (other than whether you even like the visual presentation to begin with) is breaking the social contract regarding tools and techniques used. there's no sort of sentiment or counter-sentiment regarding the topic that people are actually reacting negatively to, but just a slurry of vapid schlock. if you don't actually make a point about breaking that contract one way or the other then you don't qualify as satire. meaningless.
but honestly even that's just "whatever", bad demos come and go, and this wouldn't merit any sort of a second thought were it not for the inexplicable defense of the tools that some are coming to. - sucksadded on the 2025-04-22 18:04:06
- demo Nintendo 64 Real-time tech demo "Castello" by Macau Exports
- Sadly audio seemed to have played back in mono in at least the stream, possibly on location as well, and as I didn't have time to ensure any kind of mono compatibility it sounded quite messy… The capture above (the same one shown in the compo) has the audio playing properly though.

- 4k procedural graphics Windows Heritages
- easily the entry most deserving of winning, high marks all across. just won't fall into the trap of trying to recreate the same entry over and over :)

- demo Nintendo 64 Springy Break by MARMOT
- really surprised about the placement, thought this was top5 material for sure… it's rough around the edges of course, but that's also part of the charm. lots of clever ideas and overall a well executed consistent theme. always glad to see someone explore unconventional styles that they're passionate about :)
